Talbot should have started over Fleury in the playoffs he played better than him all year. It was just because fleury is friends with the Minnesota GM and he is playing favorites and it bit Minnesota in the butt. It’s always funny seeing someone play favorites and it screws them over lol.

@Darius Richardson Bro preds are not contenders. one goalie does not equal 19 players especially in playoffs. He has been one of the best goalies in the league for past 2 seasons.
I’m my opinion Vejmelka’s a very underrated goaltender. He’s a good goalie, he really is, but the team in front of him is horrendous. So I’d probably put Vejmelka in at least average. I’d also put Saros in Elite, my opinion. I really loved this though, great video! ❤️
Demko is great, he’s got enough time proving that I feel. I’d probably have a category called unproven for all the goalies who are not necessarily below average but they havent got the chance yet - ie comrie.
he'd have gone in the average tier. allen was always a head case when given the reins in st louis. in montreal, we suck, so we don't need him to be good. we're clearly rebuilding, so there are no expectations, which is rare for a habs goalie. although i would like him to play well enough to have trade value at the deadline.
Why only 2 in the elite category? I think Saros, Demko, and Sorokin are all elite. What I would do is add another tier that is the "Superstar" tier, where Vasi and Shesty would fit by themselves.
@Darius Richardson I guess I place less value on the word "elite". I consider elite to be the 2nd best tier. To me, a superstar goalie would be what you described, while elite would be just below that.
Nice vid, my personal changes would be: Jarry +1 (has been top 10 in league stats last 2 years) Sorokin: +1 (amazing goalie on an eh team) Saros: +1 (hardest working goalie in nhl and absolute superstar) Husso: -1 (tiny sample size and has eh underlying numbers) Elvis: -1 ( small sample size) The tiers probably could’ve been different because you really shouldn’t have more people above average then average and below yet I also don’t see the good tier being changed too much. So a good nhl starter I guess really is just average which goes to show how much goaltending talent there is.
It’s judged over a 3 year period which allows for more above average than below. Think about all the goalies who have gotten a shot over the last 3 years, but are currently in the minors.
I'm just going to say this right now: I have a soft spot for Francouz even though he plays for a team I hate (Wild fan). When I played Goalie I was the only Goalie my age in the Minnesota Hockey District to be a Right Catch Goalie, Francouz is a fellow Right Catch Goalie.
I'd put Vejmelka in average maybe even good imo. Yes he got lit up few times but he was consistently keeping them in the games. That Yotes defense was just awful and theyd lose lot more games if not for him
Aside from their defense, you know why the Islanders had so much success from 2019-2021? Goaltending. More specifically, a goaltending tandem, with two good at least goalies. 2019 Lehner (Jennings, Masterton winner, Vezina nominee) and Greiss (underrated with us) stole game after game. 2020, enter Semyon Varlamov. He was great. Two of the greatest games of his life in Games 5 and 6 vs. Tampa. Add in a Game 7 SO for Griess too. And then there’s 2021. It took a bit for Ilya to get acclimated to the NHL, but once he did, expectations were met. He shut down Pittsburgh in Round 1, and Varlamov almost led them to the finals.
I think you did a great job with the list, especially agree with the adjustments u made on the fly, however I would move Husso and Talbot down to average as I don't think they are quite on the same level as the other guys in that tier
Markstrom should definitely be in elite. He was a Vezina finalist, and was lights out all season and in the first round against Dallas. I may be biased, but he truly deserves to be up there
Either people are too liberal with the term elite or we need a tier above elite like HOF because no way Markstrom should be in the same category as the two in elite
No way Gibson is a AVERAGE goalie, and you ranked Francouz, Talbot and Merzlikins above him??? All 3 of those goalies are average and didn’t even start for their team for the last 3 years!!! Last year Gibson literally had a rookie by the name of Jamie Drysdale as his best defensemen 💀💀💀 I would also move Carter Hart to average because his best defensmen this year was Ramsus Ristolainen who isn’t even a top 4 d man in my eyes, Other than that all good…
The problem with attempting to rank goalies in tiers like this is that a lot of them are wildly inconsistent. Andersen, Campbell, Bobrovski, and others swing from great to flat out bad. Campbell for example was elite for the first 5 months with the Leafs, and then was nearly unplayable for a stretch of 3-4 months. He literally went from having the best numbers across the board of any starter, to having close to the worst. Goalie Bob; will we get Vezina Bob, or $10M backup Bob? Who knows, he's been both great and terrible in the last few seasons. The thing that makes guys like Shesterkin and Vasilevski elite is that they are consistently great, and that is incredibly hard to find in a goalie.
Finally someone saying Campbell is good and not below average bro, man’s been paying attention, also just personally I would’ve put Fleury in great but awesome tier list nonetheless

I'm so nervous with the Avs' new goalie situation; yes they've acquired a new starter 3 times in the last 11 years in Varlamov, Grubauer then Kuemper, and they all worked out, magnificently tbh. But they didn't seem so risky, Varly was a former 1st rd pick, with great numbers early into his career, Grubauer had great numbers as well 100 games into his career, Kuemper was already 30, but had just recently became a starter, and even he only had 1 season with more than 31 gp. But none of those moves were quite this risky. Georgiev had pretty good numbers b4 this past season on Rangers teams that missed the playoffs. Yeah, the Avs said they want Georgiev to be their starter and Sakic called Francouz a good back-up goaltender, so not sure why Francouz is the starter here...
Murray just had a better season than Campbell so idk why Campbell is two tiers ahead they should both be average, I’d also move hart, Gibson, Bobrovsky and Kuemper up one while moving fleury, Husso, merzlikins, talbot and francouz down one
Otter was great in the flames series but statistically Vasilevskiy has the best series ever played in the sweep vs the panthers. A shutout and the other 3 games with .970 sv% or higher
You should do a video where you rank every teams starting line up (so their first line and first pair) or maybe rank the 1st lines and 1st pairs separately. Wouldn't necessarily be who you think the best team is overall, but best starting lineup would be fun
I'm usually anticipating a cringe-fest on goalie YT rankings. It's a hard position to understand and evaluate and poisoned with personal bias. I have to say this is spot-on IMO. I'm a 54 yo member of the goalie union with a 16 y.o. son in the position. We talk to goalie coaches throughout the week and have been exposed to the most minute details of the position. The Goaltending Journey is not on a road, plane, or train; it's always on a Rollercoaster. Full Stop.
are you going to make videos for each position? (first and second liners instead of starters) if you are coach's and gm's would also be cool to see if you have the time
watch that series against connor mcdavid and the oilers again and tell me Jonathan Quick is only average? he is better than average and likely better than good too.
Kuemper belongs in great and I don’t think it’s debatable, people say his stats were good only because that great AVS defense but he had elite number with terrible Arizona. He is better than Demko , Andersen and Markstrom.
Next time make it so 50% are average or below average and 50% are over makes things clearer. Now that you have more people in above average it makes the rankings look a bit silly
I think Gibsons numbers reflect the ducks in general, they have missed the playoffs the last few years hence his numbers. Keep in mind though, he made the all star game also I've watched him this past yr on TV and in person and he played elite, but the team in front especially defense has been playing terrible. For the first half when the ducks were actually playing well, Gibsons numbers were great as well
You could probably still make the argument that Hellebuyck is still in the elite category the jets as a whole team had a shakey season last season and when the long time coach of the team resigned halfway thru the season it hurt the teams morale.
I love these videos, sometimes I find myself watching baseball ones and I could care less about baseball. I love the explanations and justifications for where players are being placed to be honest, I think these vids are worse when they’re rushed.
I think this looks like a mess not because of how you placed the goalie but more of how you named your categories. If one category is average, it would mean that most goaltender would be inside of it, that's how average works. Maybe it's because it sounds better to qualify someone as good, so you put most of them there, but the reality is that the average will be where most goalies are. Maybe take out the good category to make it become average.
It’s harder than it looks okay?🥲

Murray just had a better season than Campbell so idk why Campbell is two tiers ahead they should both be average, I’d also move hart, Gibson, Bobrovsky and Kuemper up one while moving fleury, Husso, merzlikins, talbot and francouz down one
Otter was great in the flames series but statistically Vasilevskiy has the best series ever played in the sweep vs the panthers. A shutout and the other 3 games with .970 sv% or higher
Georgiev? Pretty sure he’s gonna be at least 1A/1B with francouz on the Avs
Saros elite imo
Did I miss Samsonov's ranking?
Full Stop.
GREAT JOB. I.M.O Demko is great ...and has shown much potential for elite
As someone who lives in montreal, saying price is not elite might end ya up in the hospital around here lol
Hot take.
Demko would be an elite goaltender on a team with defense. "Great" is more than a fair placement.
are you going to make videos for each position? (first and second liners instead of starters) if you are coach's and gm's would also be cool to see if you have the time
Georgiev is expected to be the Avs' starter but I'm happy to see Frankie gettin some respect
Wouldn’t of been upset to see all goalies ranked considering the backups usually get a lot of playing time nowadays
Imo I would make another tier called Franchise with Vasy and Shesty then put Saros, Demko, Sorokin and hmmm maybe Helleybuk in elite.
If based on the last 3 years, demko should straddling great/elite. His numbers are better than most the great category.
As a hawks fan I want lankinen on the lisr
watch that series against connor mcdavid and the oilers again and tell me Jonathan Quick is only average? he is better than average and likely better than good too.
I agree
I could see Petersen taking Quick's place this season
No worries agreed with most thanks
Also as a Leafs fan it’s rough seeing our goaltending talent get worse every season under Dubas.
I agree with most just think a couple goalies should be in elite too 🤝
Kuemper belongs in great and I don’t think it’s debatable, people say his stats were good only because that great AVS defense but he had elite number with terrible Arizona. He is better than Demko , Andersen and Markstrom.
He’s definitely in the great category, I think he’s in a group with those goalies as the fringe top 5 goalies tbh
Alright man fluery is definitely great and has potential to hit the elite tier.
He is older but still looking great guess we’ll see
Demko is great tier. No question. As I typed this you changed it lol. Quickly looking at I'd also definitely move Talbot to average tier
For the first half when the ducks were actually playing well, Gibsons numbers were great as well
So grading goalies really does not do a goaltender justice, put vasy with the worst defensemen and he will be good
I meant to say grading goalies off of their numbers
You could probably still make the argument that Hellebuyck is still in the elite category the jets as a whole team had a shakey season last season and when the long time coach of the team resigned halfway thru the season it hurt the teams morale.
Only time will tell if the jets have broken hellebuycks elite status
I’d put Connor at elite to be honest. One off year (comparatively) doesn’t make him not. He’s been overworked.
The only major changes I would make are putting Hellebuyck and Saros in elite. Otherwise good video.
I love these videos, sometimes I find myself watching baseball ones and I could care less about baseball. I love the explanations and justifications for where players are being placed to be honest, I think these vids are worse when they’re rushed.
Do a teams top duo tier list!
Hart has been a little brutal. The muppets infront of him don't help either
When the 'Average' category has the 2nd least amount of goalies....
