- My weekly NHL Tier List is here and today I will be looking at every single starting goalie and ranking them with this tier list. These rankings will be based on both this season and their careers so far. Make sure you comment other tier list ideas you would like to see in the future. Samuel Montembeault is currently Montreal’s #1 goalie, before Cayden Primeau and Jake Allen (in that order). Habs have been trying to get rid of Allen all season long, to no avail.

Edit: He just got traded for barely anything, finally. 😂
They have split the net, yes Monty is technically the starter now but to start the season it was wide open to both guys.

Alex Lyon is our starter. Ville Husso is our 3rd goalie.
Yes he is but Husso is the plan for the future. The Wings will want to try and help him so he can get back in net at his best.
Husso is not coming back as a starter in Detroit, Lalonde has straight up said that the net is Lyons and he’s earned it.

They have goalies coming up in the next two seasons in the minors and college.

Love the Devin Levi shoutout, but I think 6k has that job in Buffalo right now and he’s been surprisingly holding that team together. Levi is down in ahl and has been for a while
Yeah I realize that. Levi should be the starter within a year or two though so I’m excited to see him grow into that role
The way UPL has played lately Levi won't have an easy task ahead of him. Remeber that UPL is also rather young (24) and has only played ~80games in NHL.
That’s what I’m saying! He’s been playing lights out for 24 and he has no good defense in front of him right now. Just a really solid tender so far. I think it’s going to be a battle between him and Levi if this keeps up

I feel like if you want to have a hockey channel you should at least know who’s the starting goalie on each NHL team. Jake Allen is not and has never really been “the starter” in Montreal.
Jarry has been a consistent top 10 goalie and might be top 5 this season, that's elite
Charlie Lindgren has been an absolute stud and has had top tier stats in the league for a while. To ignore him for the caps backup is crazy 😭

The Rangers have been good even with Shesty playing poorly. The team will only get better with his game being at a high level again.
There are a couple games that really sunk Ersson’s save percentage this year. Other than those few he’s been really terrific this year for the Flyers with many fans feeling he was better than Hart the whole season. I would put him in “Fringe Starter” for now, since it’s such a small sample size, but expect to move him up in a year’s time
I actually agree. I don’t want to make any quick judgements in his first real season. I see a lot there with the kid and I’m excited to watch him the rest of the year

Montembault is the starter in Montreal not Allen.
Yes I know, Allen was listed as the "starter" to start the season and like the other guys on this list (Vejmelka, Grubauer, Kuemper) I just kept it the way it was.

No hate, Binnington is a fine goalie, nothing special. Otter has way more upside at this point.

Monty is more of a starter then Allen especially now he plays more games that’s what u consider the starter

Thing with Jarry this year is that the defense isn’t that bad(or hasn’t been until just recently). If the penguins had any semblance of a good offense, they’d be happily in a playoff spot. Especially if they’d have converted any of those powerplay opportunities in the beginning of the season

Fringe starter right now. I think he is capable of more, I just think it’s so hard to be a consistent starting goalie in todays NHL so I would like to see him do it a bit longer but I’m impressed so far

Sam (Ersson) is in his rookie season. For a rookie he is the best rookie goalie in the league. No questions higher than Peter. Disrespectful
Binnington is a fringe starter? He’s stop ten in GSAx this year. He’s been great this year. Above league average per every metric. This just tells me you’ve only watched his meltdowns on twitter, not him actually playing goal.

I was gonna say a lot, but many commenters already took u to school so I’ll just say this: The only active nhl starter with 2 Vezinas, who helped his team win the President’s trophy and break a 26 yr playoff win drought 2 yrs ago, then followed it up by helping that same team to become Eastern Conference Champs, has now followed it up again by helping his team to #1 in the NHL AGAIN with 21 games to go with the 2nd best sv% and GAA in the league……….yah, that guy can start for my club anytime he wants. But sure, you’re right, there are absolutely 13 other goalies in the league who are better than him, definitely, 100%. Guess I said a lot anyway.

Joey Daccord slander not even being included despite being the clear cut #1 guy is honestly insulting. Man didnt grind away in the AHL and out-play Driedger and Gru just to be ignored like a nobody.
I said he was the starter, but when we are looking at starter contracts and numbers I think its worth talking about Grubauer more considering the money that was invested. Daccord has played half a season so far lets not act like he is Carey Price just yet.
Vasy isn't the issue. His defense has been these past 2 years
Yea i would definitely say Lindgren is Washingtons starter, id say hes somwhere on the edge of fringe starter to soild starter, especially if he finishes this year out on s strong note
Blackwood should be beside Skinner and I personally would put Binnington in the Fringe starter other than that looks good.
Woll is the Leafs starting goalie, and deserves to be in the solid starter tier.

Dude is top 10 in is Goals Saved Above Expected while facing the 5th most Expected Goals in the league. Bad defense and a lot of games hurting him(as well as his well earned reputation of being a shit disturber)

i think people view gibson with rose tinted goggles and like to make excuses because he's on anaheim, and nobody wants to accept the reality of it all.
the truth is: a big reason why the ducks have been bad is *because* of john gibson... not the other way around.
for the last 5 seasons now, gibson has been in the bottom tier of the league for GSAX amongst goaltenders who played at the very least 20 games... he's giving up too many easy chances. this year, he's somewhere in the middle, which is definitely an improvement, but last year he was in the bottom 10... the year before that, bottom 3.
the ducks have struggled because their goaltending hasn't been good the last few seasons.
@@derps8690 Well, your truth is really just an opinion. The Ducks have struggled because when they decided to go into a full blown rebuild a few years ago, they traded away a large portion of their higher end defensemen. They have had so many breakdowns in the defensive zone the past three years I can understand why Gibson seems openly frustrated at times. Those breakdowns weren't every now and then, they were/are constant, especially last year. Right now, the Ducks have a young core that needs to grow and mature at the NHL level, which they will. If Gibson was two years younger, he would be kept long term. They only reason he should be moved is by the time the Ducks will be seriously competing again he will be 33 or 34. A team that needs quality goal tending now with good, veteran blue liners would benefit from having Gibson on their team. That may be an opinion as well, but one that more would probably agree with than not. For this to happen the Ducks will have to retain decent chunk of change. At least one mil a year for the remainder of the term. Gibson is still a quality starter in the NHL and has the potential to be significantly more on the right team.

you seem to misunderstand... GSAX is a stat that specifically measures goaltending. not defense, not offense, not overall team play... it's strictly on how the goalie plays. it takes defensive breakdowns and high quality shots into account when judging, so if the issue truly was the ducks breaking down defensively, it would reflect by him having a decent GSAX... *but he doesn't.* his GSAX has been terrible the last few seasons. it's a major reason why the ducks haven't been able to even improve slightly in their rebuild.
dostal was on the exact same team gibson was last season, and his GSAX was significantly better. same with OEE, and same with stolarz. gibson was the only one with a significantly bad GSAX.
he is a huge reason they aren't doing well. he's playing a lot better this year for sure, but it's too little to late for him now in anaheim.
@@derps8690 I do understand GSAX but I have to put everything into play. Put a great goalie on a lousy team his GSAX will most likely take a hit. Put a lousy goalie on a great team and his GSAX will improve...most likely. I still think Gibson would excel on a strong team that has most of the pieces to seriously compete. I think he would add to it not just keep pace. Anaheim fans love Gibson but by the time the Ducks are at a level to compete seriously Gibson will be 33, maybe 34. The time table doesn't work. It is time to move him and I think he would agree. There are also more than a few teams kicking the tiers on him. Even if he can't get to an elite level again he can still be better than most available goalies. GM's know that. Odds are the Ducks move him this summer.

Idk vasi has been not good, those stats aren’t decent, he’s been overrated for a large part of his career, Tampa has had an amazing defence for a long time, and now that victor hedman isn’t that good anymore and sergachev being out along with a couple other factors this is what vasi is closer to realistically
That's not why. People forget Vasy had a serious back surgery to start the season. It will take some time for him to get his rhythm back but come playoff time he should be ready to go.
@@jimmyhockey I’m somewhere between hating him and not, to me he’s an insanely athletic goalie but in that sense it makes him just a better version of what Matt Murray was for the penguins, and in that same way he’s just like Martin brodeur, he’s played in behind an amazing team for the brunt of his career, and when the team starts going downhill, and heavily on defence no less, he struggles bad, his stats will get better but I think we’ve seen the best of vasilevskiy and some dark times are coming for him
