While this is an older video, I refer to it every time I tear down and reassembly the hot end on my Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus with the Micro Swiss all metal hot end. The only downside, and it really is a small issue, is the music gets a bit on my nerves after watching this video countless of times. Thanks so much for the clear and helpful instructions.
I just did this upgrade on my Wanhao last week. I, like you, was surprised at the ease of installation. Huge difference when it comes to change filaments and overall print quality. Great Job Joel! #highfive
Thank you for this video. I watched it a couple times to make sure I didn't install something incorrectly when I came across issues during my installation of the Micro Swiss all metal hot end. I purchased a Micro Swiss all metal hot end and installed it on my printer. I had an issue with the nozzle not extruding very well, and after testing I identified that there was something wrong with the Nozzle I received. I contact Micro Swiss and they sent me a replacement at no charge. I installed the new nozzle last night and it works perfect. Their support was quick and curious. So much so that I also purchased the Machined Lever for the extruder. I'd highly recommend this mod to anyone. Reduced ABS print by 15c, and can print PETG @ 250c with no issues. (I was not compensated to post this review, I liked their customer service so much I felt I needed to tell anyone/every who would listen).
Two years late to the party, but have a refurbished i3 clone heading my way this weekend, along with the MS parts installed here. While it may not be everyone's style, really love the way you go through this in realtime - helps clearly illustrate the process.
I just got the all metal hot end on your recommendation. Followed your awesome tutorial and it solved all my printer problems. Thanks a whole bunch mate!!!
A suggestion to Micro Swiss since I'm sure they are watching: I bought your all metal hot end several months back as the result of a Google search (FIRST link on a search of "Micro Swiss Wanhao"), but did t see the new block. I suggest adding a link to the block from the two piece product page since that is how a lot of people will get to your page. I have now ordered the new block and Joel's awesome video made the sale.
Joel, thank you for this. I got the new kit for Christmas and was worried about installing it. Your video was exactly what I needed. It went perfectly. Thanks!
I did this upgrade on mine. It preforms so much better now. I use an oilier for PLA with a very small amount of olive oil to season the Micro Swiss All Metal Hot End. Thanks to @The_Hot_End for that tip. Thanks Joel, for all the great videos and 3D Printing info. #highfive
Thanks, Joel. Good Video! This is an absolutely necessary upgrade if you want to print PETG or ABS. My print speed for PETG went from max 10mm/s to 30+
Day 1: Great video Joel I had this playing in the background whilst replacing the PTFE tube in my stock hot end. Only thing I forgot was to place the spare PTFE tube that came with my dup I3 in the assembly but I realized it the moment I screwed it back together. So it was time to open it back up again and place the tube in it but low and behold I dropped the PTFE tube and it seems to have vanished to a other dimension. Excuse me whilst I go on a hunt to find my tube back and let me get back to you once I do find it. Day 40898 ish: I am starting to loose track of the days which with this inter dimensional traveling I've been doing is even a wonder I have still some sense of time. I have still not found any trace of the PTFE tube and I am starting to loose hope but I can not loose hope after all I've done I can't just give up now, I will find it and I will reunite it with my printer but most important I WILL PRINT AGAIN!!!! FOR GLORY FOR THE NERD!
This video was a great help for me. Just had a problem with trying to get a filament to load. This instruction provided me with the right information to help solve the problem on my Wanhao 13 (2nd generation) turned out that a small section of filament had broken and the ‘cleaning wire’ had forced it too far down and caused a blockage inside the feeder.
I purchased and installed the Machined Lever and Extruder at the same time! GREAT vid!! I used your vid to install since my All Metal Hotend did NOT come with ANY instructions whatsoever! Grrr. Anyway, awesome vids! Thank you!!
New subscriber here! My friend Greg won your contest for the Wanhou i3 and suggested I watch your videos and those for the i3. Can't wait to purchase one of these later this year and look forward to all of your great videos!
Has that not been done? Let me see if something is already out there... Ah found something. Here is an article by Matterhackers. Let me know if this answers any questions you have: www.matterhackers.com/articles/top-reasons-to-upgrade-to-an-all-metal-hotend
3D Printing Nerd thanks for a fast response. I subbed. And thanks for the article. I just got into 3dp in the last week and I'm trying soak in every little bit of info I can. So thanks again!
Another reason not mentioned in that article is faster printing speeds. The stock hotend can't reliably keep up with print speeds higher than 60 mm/s, you start hearing the stepper clicking because the plastic can't be melted and extruded fast enough.
It's freaking AWESOME videos like this that I decided to back you on Patreon. I don't have a Wanhao Duplicator i3, but I love learning all things 3D printing, as most of this knowledge will only make me better at printing money... err, printing things to sell, yea, that's it ;-)
Thanks for the tutorial. I was able to install a all metal hotend in my Maker Select 2, and a hardened tool steel nozzle for abrasives, by watching this video.
Great video, I've ordered the Micro Swiss for my Balco 3D printer, when it arrives, I'll be sure to use this video as a step by step to helping me install it.
Good vid man, I installed my all metal kit about 6 weeks ago and all is working now... Interesting to note, I used to have the same issue as you when changing filament in that it was likely to jam when removing the current filament resulting in the need to dismantle it to clear out the remaining filament before feeding the new filament in. This has not been the case following the all metal upgrade, filaments now pull out easily without any jamming, blockages or excessive use of the tools to dismantle and clear out... #highfive..
From watching this video it would be cool to see more Wanhao i3 prints. It's a pretty good printer for the price and would be cool to see what you could do with it.
I've only had the full metal hotend for a couple of days, it's about the best upgrade you can get for the Wanhao i3 - my prints are so much better. This is one of the best tutorial videos for this upgrade (there are a few) bottoming out the throat tightly and heating the nozzle before fully tightening it is very important - it's been missed out in a few videos that I've seen. Another thing worthy of a mention is that you should adjust your retraction settings after the install - I've set mine at .75. Failure to do so can result in a blocked hotend.
wow, interesting video bro. Your method to check to see if the extruder works is what I was looking for to test my extruder. I always had to print something to see if it did its job. I have an E3D v6 on my Robo3D. I am thinking of building my own 3D printer from scratch.
Very good video pushed me to do this mod. Please tell people to be careful with the thermal barrier tube. Mine broke when i was trying to install the fan back!
I'd love to see the same thing done with the flashforge dual extruder. I have a monoprice knockoff and have been thinking of doing this with it. Love the video.
Excellent coverage! I have a MakerSelect (WanHao clone from monoprice) and I think it could use this upgrade. I will be printing in all ABS (fume enclosure is coming soon) and I was wondering how your i3 is doing with ABS as far as the extruder? I noticed in the video that the temperature fluctuation BEFORE it was installed was larger than after you installed it. Does the temperature stay steadier after the upgrade? I love pizza, too, and high five!!
Once you break tension on a screw, instead of using the top of the screwdriver, wrench, key etc... pinch the shaft between finger tips and spin it from there. Much easier & faster.
Hey Joel. Liked-Subscribed-Notified. What extruder/heated end would you recommend for upgrade today? The nozzles in the original I3 get clogged easily and are expensive to replace. Thanks for your help and your station.
First time I watched this was about 3 years ago when I fitted this to my Wanhao i3 Plus, back today as I needed to strip and clean a block but couldn't remember how to put it back together correctly, Thanks Joel. Proper job my friend. i3 Back up and running :D
I bought the upgrades for my Flashforge Creator Pro last month and I've been chicken to fit them so far because it involves taking the entire carriage apart, this makes me feel a little more confident. Don't suppose Micro-Swiss fancy upgrading your Creator hot-ends for you?
Thanks for the video. What's the benefit upgrading to the all metal hotend? Is that currently the best extruder upgrade? Sorry I'm new to this. Just bought the Monoprice maker select plus.
VERY timely video. I am going to run this video as I install one on mine. Or, let's see, driving time from your state to mine...you could be here by Tues afternoon. hahahaha :) [Digital Swiss high five]
Great video I am still on my first roll of PLA with mine and trying to figure out what I want to upgrade first. You might have already answered this but what will using a smaller nozzle diameter do for print quality? Will it allow you to print smaller details and thinner walls? Keep up the great videos! High five!
It comes with a wear resistant nozzle that is made of a zinc alloy, it will last longer then a brass nozzle, but if that's not good enough for $20 microswiss has a hardened steel nozzle that works with the kit.
This may be a stupid question, but - should you remove the filament before removing the nozzle/PTFE liner? The Micro Swiss instructions don't say, and you apparently left it in. I did so too, but I noticed some weird black gunk outside the PTFE liner and a weird smell (kind of like herbs or grass?). I'm now quite sure it was burnt PLA that I'm smelling - did PLA leak into the heater block and get burned when I started to remove the PTFE liner? Or maybe there was a gap all the time, but only now it could get out?...
Hi Joel, had any time to play with the new Micro Swiss hot end you installed? Wondering what your thoughts on it are, if you have? Interested in print quality and potential speed increases (as it's marketed as better heat transfer which should lead to faster print speeds)... Anyhow, great channel! Keep it up! Cheers!
hey 3D Printing Nerd, Thank you for this instruction video - no messing about with heat paste and heated installation, eh? I have a question about replacing this hot end. I am replacing my complete heating block, including thermister, cardtridge, kafton lining etc. Just making it a fresh start after many years of printing. Problem I am having: I cannot remover the bottom part of the hot end from the heating block any more (seeing if I can reuse the hot end), it is completely stuck. I will probably end up buying a new swiss hot end, but I wonder if you would have any tips. Greets, Dr. Scarlett
Joel, my Maker Select has been giving me fits lately and I have had to clear the nozzle and PTFE tube several times. Does having the all metal hot end seem to prevent clogs and jams or is there no difference where that is concerned? I usually get clogs when I don't properly remove the old filament from the extruder. So far I have been able to clear the tube and nozzle but am hoping the Micro-Swiss all metal hot end would eliminate much of that. #highfive Norbert
@3D Printing Nerd. Is this hot end really a upgrade form the stock one or just a replacement, also will you be doing a video on the difference between the two 3D prints? Thanks again for the awesome videos.
+Jason King Hey Jason! Thanks for watching! First - yes, this is definitely an upgrade. Having an all metal hot end eliminates the need for a PTFE tube and let's you print hotter, enabling you to print with a greater range of materials. Plus, the kit comes with a played nozzle, so you can print exotic filaments without worrying about the nozzle. I can't do a video about the print quality differences as I had to get this video done quick before my friend came to pick up the printer. I've heard others I trust say the machine prints better and with less hassle, so I believe them. I'll talk to my friend and see if when they get to printing I can see so I can compare.
Did you print any filaments other than PLA and ABS after you changed this? If so, how did it work? Also, thank you for all of your wonderful content. High Five!
It says all-metal hotend, but later says PTFE Insert. So it's not like the Micro Swiss one that doesn't have the PTFE liner and can print to higher temperatures
Picked up a Monoprice Maker Select V2 (which is basically a re-branded version of the Wanhao). Is there a need to pre-heat the extruder when replacing it with a Micro-swiss? I haven't assembled the printer yet so it's basically clean.
hey Joel , great video, its been two months since you did this upgrade , how has it performed? have you done any other upgrades to your Wanhao that have improved its quality ?
Buying this hot-end ruined my wanhao printer. I've never had much success with it. You can manually extrude plastic, but once you start printing it jams and under-extrudes to the point of un-usability. The thought behind a lot of us that have tried this upgrade is that in some cases the cooling block is insufficient. I plan on testing this notion at some point on my other channel, DIY Drawer.
Thanks Joel. Finally bit the bullet and ordered my Micro Swiss all metal hot end (should be here tomorrow), so this will help. For some reason I thought that it came with a new heater block...lol. Glad that is one less thing that I have to change. Also ordered their billeted all metal extruder and am going to change that while replacing the hot end. #highfive Good timing, received the makerbox and tried the HD Glass filament and it gave me one of my worst clogs I've ever had on a hot end (with the stock Wanhao hot end). I've heard that with the Micro Swiss you have to change your retraction settings in S3D, do you know anything about that? Thanks again.
Nice product. Respect for the patience to install it with gopro in the way. What bcan you print with this hot end? Gonna test it with some interesting material now? #highfive
Hey bro do you still have and use this printer? Because I do but I'm having firmware issues so I haven't used it in a while. It'll start to print then start clicking and stop midway. However I have full range of motion because I can extend to the end of every axis and then hit home. What would you suggest I do or how should I go about resolving this issue? How can I get a current or at best the original copy of the firmware?
I'm curious. What heater cartridge is that? I actually broke the stock wires on mine because they were cheap and exposed, while trying to take my nozzle off (to simply clear a jam). I need to buy a new one now.
Loved the video, but I am a complete newbie to 3D printing - what is the reason for upgrading to an all metal extruder - what are the benefits please? Also, this printer is now my first choice for my first 3d printer - do you still rate it? Finally, can I ask what you are using to edit your videos, what's the software?
Hmm I just ordered from them but it looks like i ordered the kit without the cooling block. Is this 100% needed for installation? What am I missing out on?
Hello, I want to ask you something: I have a problem with a printer like this: one little wire of the extruder motor was broken, and the filament doesn't leave anymore. I want to ask you if I can solder it with a soldering iron and tin or that is not correct?. The little wire is one of the four wire of the steper motor connector that you unplug in the minute 1:41 of this video, above the motor. The piece is not separated, so I can not change it. What can i do? Could you help me? I would appreciate your helping very much.
While this is an older video, I refer to it every time I tear down and reassembly the hot end on my Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus with the Micro Swiss all metal hot end.

+bogie21 I LOVE Micro Swiss. Great company with awesome people!
Thank you, I would have loved to have seen a comparison print between stock and the micro swiss :)

+Brian Popilek Yay, glad you like that! That was from an old workplace where I was in charge of the videos :)
Just got mine installed on my Monoprice Maker Select! So far, so good. I think the trickiest part of the install was getting screws back in!
New subscriber here! My friend Greg won your contest for the Wanhou i3 and suggested I watch your videos and those for the i3. Can't wait to purchase one of these later this year and look forward to all of your great videos!
I wish someone would do a review telling us why we need this hot end rather than how to install it only.

That was a nice how to video.it reminded me of the tv show "How It's Made" lol! keep up the great work and videos.high five
Thank you Joel as always informative but not boring now I just have to wait for it to arrive...
Great video, I've ordered the Micro Swiss for my Balco 3D printer, when it arrives, I'll be sure to use this video as a step by step to helping me install it.
Thanks! I upgraded my old Wanhao now! Great intstruction!
This helped me take mine apart to find a blockage. Thank you for the video!

Thanks to your video, I too upgraded my Maker Select to the Micro Swiss hot end. Thanks for the video.
+Felipe Acevedo Welcome! Glad you found it useful. Happy printing! #highfive
Just upgraded my hot end. Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy. Great video.
From watching this video it would be cool to see more Wanhao i3 prints. It's a pretty good printer for the price and would be cool to see what you could do with it.
your videos getting better and better every upload. High Five!!!!!!
+Imagination Creations Thank you!!! I'm doing my best to up the quality and I'm very thankful you noticed!
Thanks for the awesome tutorial, just followed along and got a nice new all metal hot end in my Maker Select Plus.
Worked really well. This should be great for nylon prints.
Great clip as always Joel! Thanks for sharing!
joel, thank you for this video, i just switched to the all metal hotend.
The gopro video looks better than your regular camera. Nice work.
+Chris Thank you!
I've only had the full metal hotend for a couple of days, it's about the best upgrade you can get for the Wanhao i3 - my prints are so much better.

Failure to do so can result in a blocked hotend.
May i ask, in what ways does the all metal hot end improve the general print quality please. Thanks.
ditto, what's the purpose of this upgrade?
dingalsbe. you guys don't have google?
I was really hoping there would be some sort of comparison/explanation at the end of the video and there was not..
+dingalsbe explanation of what?
wow, interesting video bro. Your method to check to see if the extruder works is what I was looking for to test my extruder. I always had to print something to see if it did its job. I have an E3D v6 on my Robo3D. I am thinking of building my own 3D printer from scratch.
This video was great and helped me out immensely, I appreciate the step by step tutorial!
Hi-5 to you for this tutorial.Just fitted it in around 15 mins and seems to be working very well. :-)
Excellent video Joe as always
+Andy Podmore Thanks for the kind words!
I love this thing! I am printing a boat hitch, and a jetski next.WanHaoooo!
Thanks for the t00ts! Worked like a champ!
Yeah? Awesome!
Very good video pushed me to do this mod. Please tell people to be careful with the thermal barrier tube. Mine broke when i was trying to install the fan back!
MAN "that thing" LOOKS USEFULL!!!!!
Done that on my Wahnao i3 v1 and it is a Workhorse now NONSTOP :-))
I'd love to see the same thing done with the flashforge dual extruder. I have a monoprice knockoff and have been thinking of doing this with it. Love the video.
+Kenzie LaMar I would love to see that as well. I'll see what I can do :)
Very smart design. Also great video thanks!
Would love to see you update this printer with the E3D Titan Aero or even a BTT 32 bit board install.
I gotta do this!
I did this mod on my Flashforge Creator Pro. Micro Swiss makes one for the FFCP. Works great on PETG. :)
Awesome... must do this in the future!
+Richard Lee You should, you can get hotter without a PTFE tube!
I guess that you can also use this for the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus. If so I'll buy one since I getting my Plus next month.
Just installed it on a Plus model. same way as this. just remember to turn of the machine before you unplug the Stepper.
Also recently received my Plus. Wondering how you like the results with the upgraded hot end kit?
yeh its good (: but did get some nice results from the stock one too.
I,m having problems fitting the screw at 10:40,I own a cocoon create Australian Aldi printer, walking away and looking again at it in the morning.
Great video Joel!
+3DPrintingEverything Thank you!

Great video, made me much less nervous about upgrading mine. So thank you.... I will be becoming a patreon
+Chris Browning wow thank you! That's incredible!
Cool vid dude
Thanks a lot, going to do it!
I come back to this video every time I have to swap out a nozzle...always forget!🤷🏻♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤣🤣

Great video, like the format.
What size nozzle did you use and what size would you recommend ?

You might have already answered this but what will using a smaller nozzle diameter do for print quality? Will it allow you to print smaller details and thinner walls? Keep up the great videos! Does the kit come with a hardened nozzle or is it just normal?
It comes with a wear resistant nozzle that is made of a zinc alloy, it will last longer then a brass nozzle, but if that's not good enough for $20 microswiss has a hardened steel nozzle that works with the kit.
This may be a stupid question, but - should you remove the filament before removing the nozzle/PTFE liner? The Micro Swiss instructions don't say, and you apparently left it in.

Is that the Alaskan Way viaduct in the background of your outro? If so, I feel for you for the traffic mess.
Yes it is, and thank you. My goodness, so bad.
I bought this kit off Amazon, and it would not fit the 1.75mm Filament I had. Is there another version for that size?
Hi Joel, had any time to play with the new Micro Swiss hot end you installed? Wondering what your thoughts on it are, if you have? Interested in print quality and potential speed increases (as it's marketed as better heat transfer which should lead to faster print speeds)... Anyhow, great channel! Keep it up! Cheers!
hey 3D Printing Nerd,
Thank you for this instruction video - no messing about with heat paste and heated installation, eh?
I have a question about replacing this hot end. I am replacing my complete heating block, including thermister, cardtridge, kafton lining etc. Just making it a fresh start after many years of printing. Problem I am having: I cannot remover the bottom part of the hot end from the heating block any more (seeing if I can reuse the hot end), it is completely stuck. I will probably end up buying a new swiss hot end, but I wonder if you would have any tips.
Greets, Dr. Scarlett
Before buying a all-metal-hot-end, you need to verify if your printer is not software or power supply limited to selecting a higher temperature.
Test print in order thanks for shearing
+divadonroda5 I would but I don't have the machine anymore! It went to a good friend of mine. Once they start printing with it I'll let you know!

High Five!
It can be great with nylon and other hardcore materials.
The Duplicator i3 V2.1 now has a MK10 all-metal hotend!
Just ordered a V2.1 and no all-metal hotend in the description. Do you have any info?
? but here it says wanhaousa.com/products/duplicator-i3-steel-frame
It says all-metal hotend, but later says PTFE Insert. So it's not like the Micro Swiss one that doesn't have the PTFE liner and can print to higher temperatures
Ah... Well still a great bang for the buck
I might get a wanhao duplicator i3 soon
Picked up a Monoprice Maker Select V2 (which is basically a re-branded version of the Wanhao). Is there a need to pre-heat the extruder when replacing it with a Micro-swiss? I haven't assembled the printer yet so it's basically clean.
hey Joel , great video, its been two months since you did this upgrade , how has it performed? have you done any other upgrades to your Wanhao that have improved its quality ?
+Naduk Kerensky Hey! Right after this upgrade I donated the printer so I don't have it. I HAVE heard its printing well!
I love what you are doing on this chnnel :) Kee the good work ! One question : is this kit good for printing carbon PLA, or phosphorescent PLA ?
+2ma FPV Yep, this kit will take any material you throw at it!
+3D Printing Nerd Even small pieces of tire ? :D
+2ma FPV well, I suppose if they are SUPER DUPER small :)
Witnessed!! Ty just got one
How can I get a current or at best the original copy of the firmware?
diy hint: get a refrigerator magnet and lay it down on your desk or bed to put the the screws on.
+curtisbeef umm... that's a good question. I think what you're getting will work. shoot them an email to be sure but I *think* you'll be okay.
I just finished, I used the lube... it's not in the micro-swiss website instructions either. weird, thanks for the vid
Thanks for watching! #highfive
And for us Aussies it will also work for our re-badged Wanhao the Cocoon Create from aldi. #highfive
+Tim Watterson That's true! #ReturnFIve
Sorry, I mean in the minute 4:41
