A better way to do this would be to boil your water and then add the KNO3 to it. You will get a higher saturation rate since hot water can hold more dissolved KNO3. When you are done, don't throw out the leftover solution, heat it back up to boiling, and then pour about 50% by volume of isopropyl alcohol into the solution, and it will cause the crystals to crash out. Then pour the whole solution through another filter and leave in the sun to dry. You will be left with all of the KNO3 that was left in solution. The powder left over, will be more pure than what you started with.

The paper is probably not being significantly nitrated in the strict chemistry sense, as in converting cellulose to nitrocellulose. That requires addition of an acid to convert potassium nitrate into nitric acid. What's actually going on here is simply impregnating the paper with potassium nitrate which then acts as an oxidizer to burn the unmodified celluose molecules... which is almost certainly preferable for making cartridges. Nitrocellulose flash paper tends to be more fragile than the paper it's made from, but this way you get the benefits of burning up all the paper without weakening it, in addition to a much more simple (and safer!) process. Pretty cool!

Agent VX right, he’s just costing the paper with a nitrates solvent and drying it onto it. I’ve done this before when I was recrystallizing kno3 to purify it and filtering it through coffee filters. The filters burn nicely and completely.

When I was a boy growing up in the late 70's it seemed we always had easy access to all things that can be mixed to go boom. We liked making booms and other than an occasional larger than normal boom within the city limits of our tiny town requiring our lone policeman to inquire that everyone still had all their body parts no one paid much attention to it. Now we would be put on terrorist lists and jailed. Sad times we live in.

Just a recommendation for anyone trying to do this if you can't find a stump remover that doesn't have a bunch of additives try going to the canning section in the grocery store or your Pharmacy and look for what's called saltpeter saltpeter is always at least in my experience 100% potassium nitrate and can also be used for canning things. Also much cleaner and safer. Than stump remover.

I buy Potassium Nitrate pellets add them to boiling water until the water quits taking /dissolving the pellets. I then let the whole mess cool then strain it to remove undissolved pellets, I use this residue to make another batch of solution adding pellets as long as the solution will dissolve more. I use quart canning jars to store the solution and then soak the paper as usual. I use old tracked computer printing paper, it is substantial enough to wrap the cartridges, and burns almost as well as flash paper and is just as good actually better as heavier coffee filter paper is while burning more completely. Duda Deisel is a good source for the Potassium Nitrate, the pellets they sell are almost pure. Even less expensive is finding a farmer who uses Potassium Nitrate for fertilizer, a farmer with a large operation often buys in multiple Dump Truck loads, some will even give a polite person several pounds. Learning to be polite pays off well, I once was given a full 5 gallon bucket full in return for information as to how to make the paper cartridges. For a reloader, 5 gallons of pellets should last for years. Finding the old obsolete tracked printer output paper is getting more difficult. Thin Onion Skin paper will work almost as well; go to a stationery store and look for the thinnest onionskin paper you can find, Staples is also a good place to look for the paper. Good luck with the process, experimentation and trial and error with. the paper was necessary for me. A friend has found a source for TEA BAG paper that has never given a misfire and has proven to be substantial enough to work with. Patience and experience will teach you how to make these cartridges, Videos like this good one provide a good place to start. Happy loading and shooting! I've followed the directions of the Video, it is effective and a good place to start, but practice and adaptability will give improved results.

I did the same thing for making combustible cartridge for a percussion Sharps Carbine. To make sure my cartridges were robust I used some scrap cotton sheets, cut to 8.5 inches by 11 inches . Once the sheets had soaked up the super saturated mix. I hung them out to dry in the shower and once dry I put them in a plastic container used for leftovers. It was then used to make into cartridges for the Sharps. Good presentation, they'll help a bunch of people out.

Try (36g) potassium nitrate, mixed with (24g) of standard granulated sugar, or a 3 part to 2 part ratio, mix it together in a container by shaking, heat a pan with about 1/3 cup water( or enough to dissolve the amount you have made), bring to a boil, add in your mixed composition, continue boiling until almost all water is boiled away and solution becomes a frothy like consistency, add in your paper or some string if you wanna make some slow burn fuse, let the material soak up the composition, let dry, and you have some pretty decent burning paper/fuse.

I also use all natural “Raw” cigarette papers. Thinner, just as strong, and when nitrated burns really well and ignites with a homemade primer a lot better, I also dry my papers in a dehydrator.

I’ve tried this a few times, and tested the resulting cartridges. I eventually decided that the small difference in leftover paper bits in the chambers wasn’t worth the extra time and effort of nitrating the paper. One test was to fire 100 un-treated perm paper cartridges from the same gun in one shooting session. I figure that if I can get off 100 shots without the little leftover paper bits becoming a problem, then nitrating provides no actual benefit to the shooting and gun cleaning process. And sure enough, that is what I found. Using perm papers, I haven’t nitrated my paper in years and years. There is some leftover paper in the chambers, of course, but it’s never caused a problem, and so what’s the big deal?
So let’s see your 100-shot tests, people!
By the time you’ve made and fired 100 nitrated and another 100 non-nitrated cartridges you’ll definitely be feeling the difference in the processing between the two. Ask me how I know.
Your mileage will vary according to the specific paper you’re using, and if you like spending the extra time and money to make your nitrated cartridges, then OK, but if you want to save time by skipping that process, then it is entirely doable by selecting a different paper. Just keep in mind that a little bit of leftover paper shards in your chambers are not necessarily going to be any sort of problem whatsoever.

Hi Mark. Thanks for all the great videos you make and all the information you share with us curious souls out here, it is very much appreciated.
I’ve just recently done this with another powdered product available a few months ago, used distilled water though. Brought two four cups to a boil in a pot, put it in a large sealer jar and stirred it while adding the stump remover until it no longer was dissolving. Created a super solution which I use on the coffee filters. Some crystals of potassium nitrate formed on the bottom, so I know there is more than enough suspended in the water.
I keep the sealer jar in a cool dry place in my workroom and haven’t had a problem with slime forming in the water, maybe due to using the distilled water?

Thanks John. Yes if you heat the water the solution will hold much more of the potassium Nitrate. But it may also start to precipitate out of solution as the liquid cools if it is over saturated. That is not a big deal, however, it will still work with crystals floating in the solution. Using distilled water will definitely prevent introducing other chemicals, such as lime, chlorine and fluoride into the solution, I'm just not sure how much difference that will make in the long run. helpful hint (from a professional chemist): at room temperature, the potassium nitrate will dissolve in water at about 1:3 by weight (that is, one pound of potassium nitrate to 3 pounds water) - if you heat the water to just under boiling, that ratio goes up to about 5:2 (5 pounds of potassium nitrate to 2 pounds water) - so heat your water before dissolving the powder, you'll get a lot more into solution, and by extension, a lot more impregnated into your coffee filters
helpful question (or suggestion): can you do a demonstration of igniting the paper with a percussion cap? and a side-by-side of nitrated paper vs non-nitrated paper burning?

Potassium Nitrate accelerated the process. Usually we saved some out for making Corned Beef and other things. I wasn'trequired by Duda Deisel ti get a permit, probably because the amounts I ordered were small enough that they're not considered dangerous. I do know that without Saltpeter, Corned Beef is a nasty unappetizing gray color, it takes only a little bit in the brine to preserve the color. Good luck with your cartridge building. I love this! Just did it today. 3 things:
    1. Adding sulfur seems to make the burn faster. Is there a reason not to do this?
    2. Rice paper seems to be a cleaner burn, but harder to handle.
    3. For faster drying, could you make the solution with isopropyl alcohol?

I'd ask a chemist about point 3. It probably would dry faster, but you might be altering the composition of the solution in a way you don't want to.

If you want to make flash paper/ nitrocellulose add sulfuric acid + potassium nitrate or nitric acid, let paper sit over night and rinse with water and let dry. Make sure to have a bucket of water that has been mixed with sodium carbonate "baking soda" if it gets out of control this solution will neutralize the acids. These two acids when mixed will heat up and produce gas so make sure to be under a vent hood with a mask or outside away from anything you care about. UA-cam has a tutorial if you need to watch.

Ok, slight out of the box question on paper cartridges. I'm curious has anyone tried making paper cartridges for a modern inline muzzleloader? I've had several people tell me I should be using loose power instead of pellets. I use the pellets manly out of convenience, but this looks like a good way to have that convenience and use loose power at the same time.

That is always a possibility. I had much more trouble when I used to use clear glue. I sometime still get end caps that stay in the chamber unburnt. It could be a result of using too much glue stick. They would have usd a wheat based paste in the old days. Any paste made with a starch base should burn better than a modern adhesive using polymers or acrylics.

    • @Bert2368
      @Bert2368 4 роки тому

The paper is already very much fuel "rich" for the quantity of nitrate it can be impregnated with. Adding more fuel would not help, but hinder complete combustion of the cartridge-
On top of that, although a couple of things like carbon disulfide or hot toluene WILL dissolve Sulfur but not paper, charcoal doesn't dissolve in much of ANYTHING, let alone any solvent which wouldn't also destroy the paper.

Does this seem like a decent way to make them?

Try A: Using the hottest water you can, with the maximum ammount of nitrate it will hold in solution for impregnating your filter paper, and-
B: Try misting the papers you withdraw wet from the hot solution with some alcohol from a spray bottle, which will cause the nitrate to crash out of solution in place, rather than dripping away in the excess water draining off the paper. Your papers will also dry a bit faster due to some water having been displaced by the alcohol. You could use denatured ethanol sold in the paint area of a hardware store, or even 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol, don't use methanol (toxicity issues).
If you do try this, weigh some samples of your papers produced with alternate methods and see just how much weight per square inch of retained nitrate different methods of impregnation get you. Because, it's not science unless you take notes, kids!
