Fun fact One of the requirements to join the British army during the hay day of paper cartridges was that you had to have at least two teeth that met in your mouth for biting the tail off of the cartridge and yes I will admit that biting off the tail of a paper cartridge is in fact one of the funner parts of shooting a flintlock.
Considering the fact that, in a major battle, you’ll fire several shots and a little powder is unavoidably in the mouth. I can imagine the, ah, digestive issues related.
Been using paper revolver cartridges for over 20 years. Coffee filters, nitrated and formed by compression molds into tubes...then dried and filled. No wrap like my musket or rifle rounds. I use the waxed paper packages that hold 6 rounds and 10 caps, which tear open like a cigarette pack using a thread. I make those too, and two packs fit in my Union officers cartridge small pouch (box) on my belt.
Congrats on the 100K. This episode could not have come at a better time as I am revisiting C&B guns after a very long hiatus from them. Thanks kindly, Santee !

Well done on the 100,000 subscribers. 100,000 down and only 900,000 to go. When I was at school we all used fountain pens so we had to use cartridge paper to remove any excess ink from writing and so fourth. That's when I discovered the origins of cartridge paper. Of course ours was not treated with potassium nitrate. We had enough problems with inky fingers and blots in the school books without the cartridge paper catching fire.
You're correct about the nitrated paper. Soaking paper in a potassium nitrate solution will make it more flammable- the paper fibers get coated with the nitrate, which acts as an oxidizing agent. It should be noted this is different from flash paper: Genuine flash paper is soaked in nitric acid which changes the actual chemistry of the paper into nitrocelluouse. Nitrated paper is still paper, while flash paper is really a thin sheet of explosive celluoid.
