As a crocheter for about 6 years I have made over 30 large pieces and only sold one. I always get the “you want what for that?”. But yet it always starts with “I have never seen crochet this beautiful and so well done!”. It is discouraging but I give most of my pieces away because I love the expression on someone’s face when they receive them as a gift! I love it even more when a year later someone will send me a picture of themselves using or wearing the pieces with their eyes full of pride!

As long as you are happy to gift your wonderful makes then thats ok. It's so lovely to see peoples reactions to handmade items and especially receiving photos of those items being used! It's so sad to hear people have previously acted shocked with your price... there's such a lack of understanding and appreciation around handmade. This podcast only scrapes the surface, we could have gone on for hours...

Thank you for continuing this important conversation. I've bought lots of patterns that I may never make because I've wanted to support the designer. I also won't ever develop any of the items I've made into patterns. It's just soooo much work. Very sadly the theft of patterns is very prevalent and it makes me really cross. Even people sharing patterns that they may have bought and made, then pass the pattern to someone else. That makes me mad too. One thing to note, there are machines that make "lace" and when up-tooled to heavier-weighted threads can look a lot like crochet edging. A lot of the trims are made that way. Exploiting workers is yet another huge topic, which takes us to the issue of slavery, which is very disturbing. I have looked at a pattern and when it's converted to Australian dollars, I've thought $15 to $20 is just too much to pay. That's what it costs for a meal for our family.

Completely agree! Theres also so many instances where people will ask openly online for someone to send them a copy of a pattern 🤯which is why raising as much awareness around these topics is so important as I do believe that some people are blissfully unaware of what they've just asked for...
I never knew that about the lace machine, ill definitely look into this, thank you for sharing! RE your last comment that really is a whole new level of concern! 😞

I love love loved this episode. This is a topic that is so so important and needs to be talked about more. Because a lot of people don’t realize 1. What goes into to making a physical product and why it’s important not to shop on the high street, and 2. How much of our personal time goes into blogging and designing and how they’re supporting a person and a business. I feel like it’s not directly their fault for not understanding (the people who are always demanding free, free, free or cheap, cheap, cheap) because they just don’t know. But that’s why it’s so important to have these conversations. Thank you for sharing this! I’ll be sharing this episode with my email list this week! ❤️❤️❤️

I completely agree with your comments, I used to be one of those people I had no idea and would have though wow what a bargain thinking it's been done on a machine. Like the bag I mentioned I'm not sure if that was crochet or knitted, I've also had a midi dress from a HighStreet shop that I got in the sale many year ago that I think might have been crochet! Thank you so much for sharing too! It's definitely the way forward keeping this conversation on going...🙌x

I own a business and sell the finished items from my own crochet designs at fairs and on Etsy. It pains me whenever I see makers undervaluing their work, not only because I want each creator to know and feel their own worth, but also because it isn’t just them that their own undervaluing affects. The reason so many folks can look at a beautiful hand crocheted piece and be appalled by its price is mostly down to the fact that not enough makers value their own work. If we all don’t value our own and other creators work, we can’t possibly expect the public to do so. Collectively as creators we set the bar of expectation and it’s difficult to keep that bar at a reasonable height when so many of us don’t ask for what our work is worth.

This is the first time i have managed to watch one of your podcasts and found it very informative. I had pre-ordered the book a while ago and received it when it came out. I found it very good for someone like me who is not fully converse in crocheting since i am mainly a knitter. But i am slowly learning. Many years ago i used to take orders and knit items for people. Many were instraia patterns and these used to take me a long time to do. Once done i used to charge for the wool and a small charge for making them. But people were never happen with the cost so i just stopped doing them. Even when i was on holiday i came across granny square crocheted tops and they were asking £40 for each one and i thought i could do one a lot cheaper and it would look a lot better than the ones for sale. I always try to support small businesses when i can.

Thanks so much for sharing! I just bought your not on the high street poncho pattern. I did pay for the crochet along but was too busy to watch at the time. I don’t mind paying again. I am so glad you took this subject up! Please do more! Becoming a crocheter has made me even more aware of the people making my clothes and textiles. It is also making me consider more the yarns i use and where they come from. My local yarn shop has actually been getting some ethical and Fair Trade yarns which are beautiful! Now i am a more experienced crocheter and i am a bit better off , i can invest in these! Have to say though…..i had wanted to crochet for years but i could never learn from the books i bought! It was only through your channel that i was able to learn at last! So thanks so much for that! Keep doing what you are doing!

Another great podcast , love this series . Very interesting topic this one . I am very small scale , I make my own patterns in both Amigurumi and blankets etc but probably only charge to cover my materials because I sell quite locally and I don't live in a very prosperous area and would hate to feel like I was overcharging people here . Sometimes it's a very fine line . I resigned myself years ago to the fact that I would never be able to charge fully for my time and designs as people where I live would just not be able to buy things from me . Its a difficult area , not one that will be sorted easily ....but I keep telling myself that at the end of the day , I love what I do and it keeps me sane ....if I can cover my costs then that's a bonus xxx

I mean if it makes you happy to not make a profit or gift the items then thats not for me to judge but if you are wanting your crochet to be an earner please don't feel you can't charge accordingly and look at selling at craft fares out of your area or online. Facebook have made changes so you can sell products and not forgetting Etsy x

Thank you for this podcast. I wish everyone buying/selling crochet items; could hear this conversation! What makes things difficult for me, as a seller; is when you get people(shops/private sellers)of crochet/amigurumi items;pricing their items, sO very low; causing clients to expect everybody to do the same.

I've really enjoyed this podcast and have watched a few of your other podcasts, which are brilliant so thank you for putting them together. I'm a crocheter of 6 years and have made lots of different items, many of which I've gifted over the years. I then started to dip my toe in the water and designed and wrote a couple of patterns, which I now sell on Etsy, although I have to say that it took me a very long time to decide how much to charge for the patterns, as I started to feel the "imposter syndrome" coming on and thought that people wouldn't want to buy the patterns, as they could get them for free on another platform, but then I gave myself a talking to and decided to take the plunge. After all we've all had to start somewhere! I've also listed handmade pieces in my shop and really struggled with my pricing so decided not to list any other items for now, as it is just too stressful. I recently finished a very large blanket, which I worked on, amongst other things, as well as working full time, which took me almost 6 months to make. It was then gifted to my niece, as a "house warming" present. I posted about it quite a bit on my Instagram account and someone asked if I was doing a "giveaway" on Insta for it - I very politely answered that it was being "gifted" to a family member. I keep telling myself that there is enough room in the world for everyone to be a creative and sell their designs/makes but I do still feel pressured to offer things for free occasionally, as so many other people do the same xx

I am a crochet hobbyist and just make items for family, but I make soap to sell. The regular theme with the soap, and my husband's trade business, is effusive praise at the quality and how good their skin feels, then statements they can get the same cheaper elsewhere. When I check out the "elsewhere", the maker is unqualified, does not charge minimum wage for their labour, and the product is nowhere near the same quality of oils, or they are buying a product that is not soap in the supermarket. Crochet is experiencing a similar issue of underpaying the producer and products that are not crochet. With patterns, if I want the pattern then I am willing to pay for it. I have a digital pattern subscription which perfectly suits that need.

I crochet as a hobby. I love to make things for family. I have been asked on numerous occasions to make things for people. I did it a couple of times for friends of my family and charged for the yarn, and even then I felt they paid grudgingly. I now refuse, as people are unwilling to pay the actual cost of an item. Usually with the response ' how much?!!!'. Many people do not realise that crochet cannot be reproduced with a machine as knitting can. I didn't previously pay for patterns and would make items provided free via UA-cam etc. I am now fortunate enough to be able to afford patterns, and even though quite a few are supported by videos, I still purchase the pattern.
As a side note I also sew and make garments. I have been asked to make items usually with the comment 'it won't take long I'm sure you can just run one up '. I think it reflects the fact that society today are ignorant to the fact that handmade items take time and care to produce.
Also if you are a young parent of children I'm sure they want to be 'on trend' for themselves and their family and so with limited funds, the cheaper high street stores are their only option. Thank you for a thought provoking pod cast x

I thin people assume we crochet for happiness therefore don't mind requesting things for free when we have so much yarn etc when the reality is far from that. Yes we crochet for lots of different reasons, enjoyment, mindfulness, a creative outlet but it doesn't mean we want to spend hours, days and weeks on someone for free. Sorry you've experienced this and I'm happy to read you now refuse. It really does take the fun out of crochet when the pressure to create for free is put on you! I think theres a general ignorance across the creative industry with the term 'can you just...' thrown around, so frustrating! Thank you for sharing your experience! x

So much time and hard work goes into crochet and even when people say 'can you make me one of those!' is super cheeky because cost and money aside it's peoples time for absolutely nothing! I completely agree with this conversation I feel hurt every time I see fast fashion crochet I just hate to think of the sweat shops that are probably being used to do so and most importantly the people that are not getting a fair wage.
I personally struggle with pricing my amigurumi correctly as I want to make sure I’m being paid enough for my work and getting enough for my materials but I don’t want to charge so much that it turns people away for example I just made 4 amigurumi otters with custom outfits and embroidered enitials and I charged £80 total but after spending £40 just to get the materials I wondered if I charged enough but equally so I wouldn’t have wanted to go much higher in fear of scaring customers away. What are your thoughts on this?

I would say give yourself an hourly rate (more than minimum wage!) and time how long it took you to make them and add this onto the cost of the materials and then round up the cost and most definitely add on postage and packaging on top. I think sometimes we can all be guilty of marketing ourselves to the wrong client... there are people out there who will pay the right price for handmade items! ♥Just think how much people pay for art, designer bags, jewellery, trainers! The list goes on... so just remember that when it comes to pricing your work 🥰

Wow £3000 to create a pattern, I never realised just how much some things cost, I think this episode of the podcast has been really informative and eye opening!
I have no problem paying for a pattern that I really want to make, I look at it, that you give a lot of patterns for free, so why not support the designer when a pattern is a paid for pattern,, I remember a couple of years ago on Fb, when you brought out the purple and cream blanket, I can’t for the life of me remember what it’s called 🙈 you made a video for the baby size, and the bigger sizes were on a payable PDF,, I bought the pattern, I think if I’m remembering it was only a couple of quid, less than £5,, anyway a woman had purchased it, oh and she wasn’t happy when she realised there was a video and I remember saying to her, that it had 2 other sizes and was only a few pounds and it’s nice to support the designer when you can,, as you give a lot of your patterns for free,,she did apologise when she thought about it and agreed it was a nice thing to support designers when you can, but yes there are a lot of people who expect them all to be free
As for selling my crochet, I don’t do that, this is not only my hobby but it’s also my therapy, I don’t take orders, if I’ve made something that someone likes, I will say, I will make it, but I don’t know how long it will be, because in my mind it has to be perfect and I’ve found that when making for others I get a bit stressed and end up making mistakes and spend more time frogging 😂… Like just now I’m making the patchwork blanket, but I’m just taking it easy as this year I moved house (28th February) and I have had so many problems with the house, that I’ve been constantly stressed, plus I had to move all my yarn to my daughters house because of no room to keep it anywhere and the plaster dust has been terrible, I had to sleep in my living room for 2 months 🤦🏻‍♀️ I just got my bed back in the bedroom 3 weeks ago, I’m still not fully unpacked, and I had the cheek to go buy a new Christmas tree and outside lights for my wheelchair ramp and the inside is still a mess 😂 but I thought I need cheering up 😂
Oh my that was a fair auld rant I had there 🙈 I jump from one thing to another 😂
Nicola, I burst out laugh right at the same time you did, eyeballs on your bits 😂🤣😆 you 2 should do more of these episodes together 😂 I can’t wait to see what the wearable is, in fact, did you not post a picture of you crocheting what looked to me to be like the makings of a cardigan, Sarah-Jayne ? It looked like a baby size right enough as I recognised the shape if that makes sense, it actually made me think of 1 of Kerry-Jane designs 🤔😂
Thanks for the laughter, really enjoyed this episode 🥰💖💖

Yup it's sounds shocking does't it thats why we felt it was so necessary to share... I'm glad you enjoyed the episode Claire! I love your ethos on this... someone else commented saying something similar that they buy the designers patterns just for support even if they don't make the pattern 🥰 The cream and purple blanket is called the fast and easy or switch it up blanket (it comes under both names across UA-cam and the blog)💜 Thank you for sharing your valid option with the lady in question, much appreciated!
I agree re making something with someone, it should be done at your own pace on your terms if it's for free, I use crochet to help relax as it takes my mind literally off everything because if I don't concentrate I loose count and go wrong so I most definitely wouldn't;t want my beautiful hobby to ever become a chore or stressful it defeats the point of this wonderful craft!
When life throws obstacles in your way sprinkle it in glitter!! or a pretty tree with lights on in your case! ✨I hope you manage to get settled in your new home soon!
I hope the patch work blanket helps relax you when you get chance to work on it, its not a quick or easy project but it's such a satisfying one! ♥

People need to understand when you sell stuff....it's a business. Dont come to craft fairs or Etsy or whatever to sell your hobby. It's makers/designers that literally drive the value of crochet down by not charging enough or offering free patterns on UA-cam. I went to a vendor fair with a shawl that was $85. The yarn cost $22. It took me at least 10 hours to make this shawl and I'm a relatively fast crocheter. This means I made about $6 an hour. This is less than what McDonald's worker makes! After I sold the shawl, I heard a KNITTER say to other customers "$85 for a shawl?! That's ridiculous!". This is horrible! Stop under charging and stop shaming people for trying to charge enough to have a sustainable business. A handmade hat does not cost $10. 🙄

But what I don’t like is when I go to make it, the pattern doesn’t make any sense and there’s no way of knowing what the designer had in mind when it was written. There are mistakes and the way it was written is very confusing. I had some that were like that from the beginning of the pattern. I used to sell at craft fairs. It was all family made items which included sewing boxes made by my father and quilts, knitwear and crochet by myself and my mother. It was soul destroying to have items rejected because of the price. We even had people approach us at the end of the fair offering silly money for our items as we were ‘packing up and it would save us having to take it home’. I now crochet for myself or gifts for family and friends. Why o why do people devalue good just because they are hand made?

Sadly at craft fairs you never know what clientele you are going to get... I'm sorry to hear about your experiences! I can't even being to imagine how deflating that must have been! 😞 It always frustrates me when I hear people saying 'I could just make that myself' and I wonder how many of those people actually try and then realise how difficult it is or remain in their 'ignorant bubble' of not knowing the time, skill, practice, imagination (the list goes on) that actually goes into it! x

People often say I should sell my items I have made, I refuse to as the prices people are prepared to pay are an insult to the time it takes and cost of materials.

I am 10 years old and I tried so many times for the 2nd layer what you call single/double crochet still I am not getting a hang of it it has been around 2 months since I started to learn and I learnt the first layer in just a few minutes but the 2nd layer is just so hard... I tried watching soo many tutorials, but still no improvement

Keep practising, the first stitch I ever tried was the double/single crochet and I struggled to be honest I then moved onto the Granny Square before getting to grips with double crochet and I pretty much mastered it after the second attempt! 🙌So I'd recommend trying another stitch and don't get too wrapped up in trying to perfect the double crochet 😊

I create one offs, silly/weird animals, I don’t follow any pattern. All that said I have no idea how to charge for these things.

I took up crochet Xmas of 2021 after a terrible divorce and wanting to do something rather than stay in bed, now as a man, it is so hard to find appropriate male-styled items, everything I have seen or found is aimed at a lady/woman/female/fenimen,
Hats and Scarfs, always show a woman, not a man, and rather than aiming at one they put unisex, but it's not right, I don't search unisex I search men's patterns or male patterns, this includes clothing as I tailor my self, I have found 100+ for men
have a guess how many for woman? ------- over 10,000,
what little there is of men are from over 50 years ago, and yet they keep designing ladies, look at SEW magazine when was the last time they had a male pattern free with the magazine? I don't know.
back to crochet, yes it is true it's coming back as fast and hard as a hobby, and those who are thrifty will fashion it but it will fall out of fashion again before 2030.
I agree with @TheTigerFoote I used to make bouquets of flowers in crochet in cotton. Hence, it was washable and better than plastic yarns, sold 4 of the 50 I did, gave the rest away most to churches doing special events, a new starter doing wedding planning, and a funeral home for display and then most recently I did the Poppy Appeal. While waiting for donations I was crocheting the poppies and moved over 40 of them, to everyone from students of all ages and the elderly, to nurses, police, and many more professions, I made some purple for animals too. for the 10g of yarn and the 20 minutes it took to make plus the safety pin, next year I will seek reimbursement for the broach attachment/pin part only but donate time and yarn and skill,
I want more for men, and not just the overly flamboyant Tom Daley patterns (yes I'm also a homosexual) but normal standard styles like a basic pattern for socks, a cardigan in say navy with primary navy button not pink and frilly with flowers sown in and a bust but a plain flat man's style. we don't have Darts in our clothing on the bust
taken me 4 years to learn how to make my own patterns without outside help
I came to your page for tutorials on how to crochet and never looked back, I have even started to explore Tunisian crochet for scarfs as it's very quick to whip one out.
I like to buy cakes, and make matching hats and scarfs for family and such,
this leads me to Lion brand, their website had the V stitch fingerless gloves and hats free for the USA but not the UK, but a quick search on Google will reveal the link to the same free document here in the UK it's about being savvy.
I will try and find a copy for free, like TOFT I love their work, Lord is a wonderful designer, but nothing online but one but that one is free anyway, in recent months I have seen a stark decrease in the price of their kits and books. I don't know if this is due to a lack of demand or because they're doing well.
sorry for the long wall of text but as a man, I don't feel represented in crochet and sewing. maybe you can advise on how to find the right patterns/sites/books
    kindest and warmed regards
    leo.

Such a great point Leo! Crochet is a very female oriented craft and business and this needs to change and this has come in in so many conversations here at Bella Coco. Are you on social media? If so please could you leave you handles below if you're happy to do so?

The ones I hate most….the bags labelled ‘crochet’ and it’s clearly macrame. Shamefull and that was a site in the UK. Should be reported to the authorities for incorrect descriptions and just shows the ignorance of their buying department so I will never buy from that company. I make all my own crochet, machine knits and sewn clothing, bags and accessories and all greatfully received by family and friends when gifted 😊

I appreciate a large amount of people are struggling right now and there's a lot of financial frustration and worry but there are also a lot of people who are financially fine. There are people out there who will pay, it's mind over matter and building the confidence to charge your worth xx
