Well in Season 1 Shadis commended how good he was with the ODM gear (and his maneuvering was in the first OP too hahaha) but yeah I agree it's one of those things that's overshadowed.
@Mika I think what the comment tried to say was despite being not talented or raised like a warrior like Ackerman's or the shifters they're just a regular guy who's a veteran of the ODM
The fact that manages to become the new Squad Levi , and then becoming one of the only Scout veterans left after the retake of Shiganshina prove how good of a soldier he is in comparison to the others that .. yk .. didnt make it.

What makes him tragic is that he doesn't have a tragic backstory, no shite parents no dead parents, a loving mother and a lovely home, but he left it to be something big. A hero!
@ushnikmitra the world wasn't Jean's enemy. Yeah, most of the popular opinion agreed with the genocide of paradis island, but that's not much worse than most of paradis wanting the world genocide. At that point, it wasn't paradis vs the world, it was Jean fighting to safe as many inocent lifes as he can. Jean has never fought for what it's better for him, he always fights for what he thinks is right. If he had supported a global genocide, THAT would be out of character.
It was what happened to Marco that ended up being his tragic backstory that gave him the motivation. A friend who saw the best in him and made him believe in himself and his abilities. Jean was a fantastically written character.
I genuinely believe if he had not met Marco, Jean wouldn’t have grown and changed as a person. He made a big impact on him. He wanted to be better for Marco
True. Had it not been for Marco, Jean likely would have remained an immature, self-serving jerk. But Marco was the first person to see through his tough guy act and call him on it, to see who he was at his core. Even when Jean talked trash, Marco knew it was coming from a good, very "human" place. Marco saw the real Jean, the one that even Jean didn't know was there. People often say that Marco shouldn't have been killed off, that there was no real purpose, but by him being gone, Jean was allowed to grow as a person and work towards and serve something bigger than himself.
I love how 3 seasons later, Jean is still talking about those ashes not forgiving him. It's one of those that hit you in the chest when you read it (or hear it).
That little self coping mechanism he has of covering his ears when he's overwhelmed with the world is as adorable as it is heart-wrenching. I love him sm :(
It's cute and sad asf not gonna lie. That scene when he is telling himself to ignore Hange and pretend to not have heard anything followed by him joining the alliance is... God I love this character so much
Jean is the strongest yet the most underrated character ever. I can write a whole essay about jean. Also he is one of the most relatable characters of the show. *spoiler* in the last season when we see him in the forest, hiding and dreaming about the life he want we actually saw the weak side of the jean and how this mess effects him. This soldier life ruins him but he keeps fighting, after that scene we saw him coming back and making the right decisions. He is fighting with the titans and his devils at the same time
The one man who don’t want to fight but end up fighting for everyone. The one man who was trying to be a dickhead at first turn out to be have a golden heart
People didn’t like Jean in season 1?! I liked him by the time the Trost thing ended. He’s a reluctant hero, which is very relatable. Even when he gave Eren shit for not transforming against Annie, he wasn’t being mean - he was being honest about how he also believed in Eren and wanted him to come through.
Agree with marco. What makes jean a good leader is because he’s not the strongest or present himself to be one. He relates to everybody’s fear and weakness. Best character development, his inner beliefs and moral has been tested so many times yet he always sides with humanity. He always shows himself as someone selfish but ends up making sefless decisions every single time.
The fact that Jean is one of the few characters with no a tragic past/backstory but still manage to become a freakin badass. Make me like him even more.
He is !! People might call him ' beta , omega ' etc bs , but Jean is realistic, a friend like no other , reasonably brave, and just cautious enough, as well as very intelligent and responsible. Jean is the type of person we should aspire to be , not Eren .
There is one more scene in AOT with Jean that I really like. It's when there was a fight with Annie inside the city, and the police saw a titan that close for the first time. And while running to the fight scene ready to fight, Jean looked at the military police guys standing shocked on the building roofs and said something like how silly of him it had been wishing to join those guys. He acted so cool comparing to them back then.
jean is actually the best character in aot for me, he really cares about the little things that happen to people around him, remember when armin get harassed? he is the one who comforts armin, the way he apologize to gabi when he accidentally kicked her, we all know he loves mikasa but he respects her loves for eren a lot, jean boy is the bestest boy 😔 i don't know why some of people still hate him :(
Jean's character development is truly one of a kind. S1 I considered him really selfish and arrogant and didn't like him. But now he's one of my favourite fictional characters of all time
Erwin and Jean are my absolute favorites. They're basic humans but still on par with the Ackermans and even the shifters. Jean's character development is one of the best on the show, if not the best. Love him sm
They are my favorites too They keep fighting even if everything seems to be lost They both have their dreams but they are ready to sacrifice their dreams if necessary Both of them also value people's lives. Jean said that he didn't want any unnecessary sacrifices and hesitated to shoot Falco in S4. Erwin felt really bad every time he had to sacrifice his soldiers for the victory and he himself admitted that
It seems like the biggest theme for his character is responsibility. He first joined for selfish goals but then soon realized that he has the power to save others and chooses to accept the call to lead his comrades away from death.
How did I forget that he kissed the hand that held the ashes, it's reminiscent to how christians kiss their rosaries in important situations or even when they go out for the day, it's Jean's personal prayer
I hope the anime keeps Connie's line about they ending up saving the world because of Jean. True, I bet none of them would've joined the Survey Corps without Jean's example
He's one of my favorite characters alongside Erwin and Levi, at first for being a comic relief and later as a boy maturing into battleforged man. I'm so glad Jean Boy survived until the end of the series T___T
I think people don't think about it much, but Jean and Conny are neither Ackermans nor Shifters, just "normal" humans, but they are still the greatest soldiers in the world, the ones who survived and stopped the rumbling .
Jean is actually my favorite character. He sympathizes with people and situations just like marco said. Whenever there is need he always steps in as leader. He can handle the things very well. He cares and vibes with all of the commarades
You forgot to include the scene where Jean suppose to leave for the interior and Jean seing other MP scared of titan realized he made the right choice of joining the scout.
He had the best character development, i remeber in season 1 when he wanted to join the police inside the fence so he doesn't fight any titans and now look at him, one of the best fighters out there

I loved how jean went from a bully towards Armin to trusting him implicitly with his life. Like, to the point where if he doesn't know what he should do, his first instinct is to ask Armin and do whatever Armin suggests. And Armin in turn would die for Jean too. Seeing his best friend Marco die really changed him to his core. Kid went from being the class bully to big bro
He has the best character ark in the series. Even as far as season one when the military police are too afraid to fight the female titan and he's running past them into battle. Gosh, I adore this character!
Jean Kirstein dead ties with Levi as my favorite character. He is a well written character, interesting, engaging and downright gorgeous. Thank you for posting this video. ☺️
I just finished season 1 and he's my favorite already. I love the inner conflict he has all the time that his brain told him to not giving a shit but his heart told him otherwise. And he ended up following his heart. The scene when he told people he's joining survey corpse during the cremation is just so powerful!!!

This young man is not only very human, he was very honest about everything. I never thought that he would become one of my favs.
Loved jean from the moment his reaction after the mikasa cutting her hair thing in s1😂😂 I'm on s4 now still my fav
I like to think Marco protected Jean through all the battles.
For 9 minutes only? FOREVER 💛
It's good to see fellow Jean appreciators in this video ♥️♥️♥️
Jean Kirstein dead ties with Levi as my favorite character. He is a well written character, interesting, engaging and downright gorgeous. Thank you for posting this video. ☺️
His character development *chef’s kiss*
he's the best and he's so underrated
Such pure soul character
I just finished season 1 and he's my favorite already.
I love the inner conflict he has all the time that his brain told him to not giving a shit but his heart told him otherwise.
And he ended up following his heart.
The scene when he told people he's joining survey corpse during the cremation is just so powerful!!!
What should be done... this one sentence is a big part of his charcter development

Titan transformation of Connie and Jean broke me. It was the first time for AoT that I cried. I was really attached to my "nakama"s :,)

"he kissing the hand that held marco's ashes" @3:32
I'm too lazy to double check, but I think he had an issue with the trigger on his gear during the big outbreak that almost got him killed. I always thought he was kissing his gear because he puts a lot more care and maintenance into it after that.
When they zoomed in on the name Buchwald 😂😂 I was thinking the same thing, BUCHWALD? Outta all the names he coulda chose for his horse 💀
God. I love him. I love this video. I love his development. I love his character. I love his humanity. He is the most realistic character of all. From the first episode I said that, from the first second I liked him. Thank you so much that he survived at the very end
