You know what's interesting I found that Isayama made Levi said about Jean. In the "Inside Out Interview" for Levi there's a part where Levi says that Jean is the only one capable to replace him. You would think maybe Mikasa since she's strong but she lacks sympathy from what Levi says. She may be strong but leadership is not one of her qualities. Levi says that Jean is very gentle (but also includes this can be bad because he tends to hesitate alot.) which is why he should be the one to replace his leadership position. I find it interesting how Isayama made Levi (the strongest human in AoT) to say that Jean (the character who represents humanity) is more suitable leading because he's more human compared to everyone else. It's such a small symbolism that can be missed.
That actually makes a lot of sense if you think about the return to Shiganshina arc. When everything seemed lost, Jean took command and kept their group alive while Armin tried to devise a plan to win - similarly to how Levi would lead a small unit on the field while Erwin was the big strategy guy. If Armin is Erwin's successor, then Jean is Levi's.
Jean dreaming of a relaxing life, with a son, Mikasa as his wife and being happy. Was so sad watch. That dream didn't changed, but... he knows things will never be the same. Jean, you beautiful steed. You deserve a better world.
Jean doesn't need a personal tragedy to be a great character. He doesn't need a sad backstory to show the depth of his character. He doesn't need to cast aside his humanity to think rationally like Eren, Erwin and Armin. He can not always save everyone, but he only does what he does to protect his friends, suffer for them and find the strength to continue to protect them. He went a long way from a narcissistic dreamer to a selfless realist. Humanity is not a weakness, but a strength of this character. Jean Kirstein... My favorite character! Thank you for this video!
I never understood why Jean was my favorite character in aot. But this video made me realize, he is the most human. Jean isn't the main character, he doesn't have special abilities, he doesn't have a tragic bsckstory, or is the comedic relief. he's just a normal solider with his only defining trait being he's a good leader. But that doesn't mean a normal character can't be entertaining, the development he goes through is incredible and I think he goes about the biggest change in the story aside from Eren
Jean's been my favorite character since the beginning. Everyone has changed throughout the show, but none more than Jean.. He's a living prove that you don't need to be crushed by the cruelty of life to be strong. You don't need a tragedy to be selfless. He's so inspirational and relatable. He always learns from his mistakes! He continues to act rational while remaining a human.
Don’t forget Jean keeps the group together and focused when people are paralyzed by fear, he can come up with a plan on a whim with very little information and keep others alive until someone who’s more capable than him can come up with a working solution. Jean is the one who keeps the group alive when the protagonists are preoccupied doing their own thing. Sometimes he lets his emotions and gets his anger out but only once everyone’s safe, in the heat of battle he’s stoic and makes the best decision available at the time while everyone is paralyzed by fear
he's unironically my favourite character. it's just that transition between wanting to have a quiet, peaceful life and humbly giving that all up, giving your all to a much more dynamic and brave style of living. it's the fact that he's capable of forgiving and understanding where his enemies came from, rejecting his ego for other people's destinies, as literally the only character who didn't have a tough upbringing in his childhood. you captured that crazy amount of character development really well, and I'm really glad I am one of your subscribers (/¯◡ ‿ ◡)/¯ ~ ┻━┻
@@waga7764 not really. everyone had a sort of a tough upbringing and a reason to fight, but jean really only wanted a nice and peaceful life but ended up fighting alongside his friends, who were starting from a much different situation and perspective.
@@waga7764 the other characters in the show all have to fight, their goals are all based on fighting to be reached, they doesn’t have a choice basically. Jean has the choice in the other hand, always did but he always choose to fight by his own free will.
Like everyone else here, I’ve loved Jean and his character development over the whole series. From the very beginning he was a stark contrast to the rest of the main cast, having a normal upbringing and being both idealistic and somewhat cowardly, while his comrades were all selfless and in opposition to his views. But as the story progresses and he sees more and more of the people he has loved and learned to care for die around him he willingly sacrifices his own wants and puts himself on the front lines along his friends, and while everyone else beside him is able to understand each other, no one can truly understand him except for the best friend that he lost. As the whole cast learns more and their world is shaken at the foundations he starts to loose himself once again, longing for the life he could have had if he didn’t sacrifice his own desires, but in the end and at his core he is able to be selfless and put himself out there, every struggle, heartache, and joyful moment he goes through is a perfect representation of humanity, even within such a bleak world. All of this is aided by the (occasionally and more so recently) dramatic and accurate animation alongside Taniyama Kishou san’s masterful voice acting (it probably adds to my love for Jean because Kishou is my favorite voice actor). All of this was reflected in this edit from the portrayal of Jean’s scattered thoughts after the rumbling, his growth from being a trainee to one of the heroes of humanity, and the quite moments with muted music and only dialogue. Thank you do much for making this wonderful edit and I can’t wait to see what else you may put out.
Jean is one of my favorite characters. I think most people like him. He had probably one of the biggest character growths over the show. His growth was slow and steady. It was interesting that you started out in season 4 and kind of went backwards and then blended both the past and more recent stuff. It was very well done and for some reason made me cry a tiny bit. Maybe it was the music or something else, but I loved it! P.S. I loved that ending with everything flickering!

Jean has the perfect qualities which represent a normal human. Desire of a comfortable life, just wanting to love his life peacefully, no grand plans about saving the world, not even ignorant ideals to stand by. He is the most relatable character as a human. (Erwin's far too brave, Levi's far too skilled, Eren and Reiner are far too headstrong, Bert and Zeke are straight up nihilistic.) - Jean's the one who symbolises the majority, pessimistic, yet still Hopes for a change. Doesen't want to act on his ideals like Eren or Reiner do, but also isn't the one to accept a hellish situation like Bertholdt or Zeke. Love the edit.

Everyone always likes to joke about him being a coward or having a horse face or coming in second to Eren when it comes to Mikasa. But he is such an underrated character. He is a good man. A good man with a kind and good heart. A good heart able to forgive his friends even when those friends betrayed him.

I feel like a proud mom seeing his son finally evolve into a man on S4, he deserves all the love and recognition in this world. He isn't smart like Erwin, Armin & Hange, he isn't as strong as Mikasa & Levi, he's just a normal kid who had a crush on a girl that will never like him and a c0cky j3rk but as the story progress, he became a man, he's a man now. When I saw how he manhandle the group so well, I think Marco is celebrating in heaven, Erwin will proudly say "Thought the kid well!". There's more of Jean's character actually, and I love how he's not pushing himself to Mikasa, he's respectful and know his limits. Coming back to this video every once in a while because it is the best edit I've ever witnessed. Jean was one of my favorite character since his first battle but what really sold him to me was his OVA. It's not even in the manga but I'm certain Isayama participated in that. I know it's a cooking competition with over the top reactions and goofy moments but it does give us an hint about Jean's youth. He was a normal kid, with a very loving mother. He was a funny and energetic child, always ready to play and laugh with his mom, but he grew up as a brat teenager that was embarassed to be seen with her. I saw myself in that unimportant, not-even-canon episode. I realized that I was doing the same thing to my mom, that kept trying to reach out to me and get me to smile just like Jean's mom was. We grow up and we tend to dissociate ourselves from our period of innocence because it seems to be the best way to evolve. The story of AOT is nontheless reminding us to remember. To remember what our ancestors did, to remember what our parents did, but also to remember everything that we've done to this point. The transition from the voices of his childhood to the shots of his nightmare at 1:20 is the perfect symbol of that. I'm going to remember this and AOT for the rest of my life and I'm looking up to Jean as a model.
This made me so emotional. Jean is my favorite character in Attack on Titan, and I really feel like people don’t understand who he is and what he stands for, his values, what he’s sacrificed and given to others. He cares about others and he’s selfless, but he has that abrasive attitude as a barrier so that people don’t see his weak side. He’s brave when he needs to be, especially for others sake. He’s such an incredible character, I love him so much.

Jean has always been one of my favorite characters but I haven’t been able to put my finger on why other than he is “human.” I think this video perfectly describes the brilliant nature of his personality and actions, it’s sad to see so many people discard him as “just a side character,” brilliant job as always Akut. At first, I thought he was going to be that annoying generic side character in anime but oh boy, I ended up loving him the most (and levi) and being able to relate to his character.

I think you deserve way more views and likes. Because this video is a masterpiece. The editing is great and with many different scenes your create short film. You don't use the normal scenes in the video like it was in the anime you make your own scenes and their perfect.
Tbh I feel like Jean is more of a Captain like Levi since he's more in the battle calling orders. There was also a little interview that Isayama wrote (Inside Out Interview)for Levi saying if something were to happen to him Jean would be the one to replace him. One would think it be Mikasa but apparently Levi says she isn't suitable in commanding orders because she lacks sympathy for others.

He's my favourite character in the series too, but I didn't really like this view of him that much. I think he grew to be a very strong character in the series. I am literally in tears as I'm writing this... you did amazing, I think I've just seen one of the best tributes videos ever made to any character.. I think Jean is great and he is great because he is human. And at the same time, his tragedy is that unlike many other characters in aot, he remains human and that brings suffering to him in this inhuman world of titans and wars. :( thank you, I feel lucky I could watch this masterpiece!

imo jean deserved to be the survey corps commander, not armin. armin is a better strategist, but jean is arguably the leader persona.
if they were both in that position together it would almost be like having erwin back.
Tbh I feel like Jean is more of a Captain like Levi since he's more in the battle calling orders.
There was also a little interview that Isayama wrote (Inside Out Interview)for Levi saying if something were to happen to him Jean would be the one to replace him.
One would think it be Mikasa but apparently Levi says she isn't suitable in commanding orders because she lacks sympathy for others.

He's my favourite character in the series too, but I didn't really like this view of him that much. I think he grew to be a very strong character in the series. Or if he's a 'representative of humanity' - humanity is strong. I liked him and his character progression for different reasons. Still, respect for the work put in on this amv!
