This Budget Shotgun Microphone is Underrated

- When I first tried making a proper youtube video, it was a review of this microphone. This video is a remake showing how far I've come and is also a review for people checking out this microphone as quite frankly the old video wasn't helping anyone.

Glad I found this review. This is the first video I’ve come across where someone knew enough about EQ to make it sound good.
Thanks for mentioning it! Learning the correct tweaks to improve the sound took some time, but I’m glad it works. The most important thing I learned the hard way, is to get the best possible sound quality, you need the mic as close as possible. I’m still super pleased with the system now that I understand more. Cheers
Wow, this video really does show how far you've come. Very professional! 😀
This review has been really helpful but I have one question I’m hoping you can help with?
Does the transmitter that makes the mic wireless affect the audio quality a lot?
I just got this mic and it is plugged directly into my camera (canon 700d) and the audio quality is horrible. It sounds a lot like your first review (lots of white noise and pretty quiet) but I also haven’t tweaked the audio with any programs. Would audacity fix this or do I need extra equipment? Thanks
Sorry to hear about the issues, I’ve had my fair share of frustration over the years. I haven’t noticed any major degradation of quality due to the wireless setup; I don’t have studio headphones, but if the quality was affected enough, I would have noticed by now. I’ve had the mic plugged directly into my cameras for a while, the two biggest factors (especially the ones making my first review the way it was) are distance to subject (I believe for people the recommendation was 6-11 inches or so, which I didn’t do) and also having the mic on its regular mode (I think it’s just on) and not the 150hz mode which is the furthest the switch can be moved. I had this setting chosen originally which really affected the audio, I believe it’s for “extreme weather” or situations where audio quality can be sacrificed but it’s better than nothing. (I haven’t researched this in a while though so please check it out if possible.) I use a cheap xlr to 3.5mm adapter for compatibility, I highly doubt it affects anything. Cheers
Finally! Someone who shot it without phantom power.
Nice wireless setup! I was thinking of getting an old zoom recorder but I think I'll just use this instead.
But before that how's the battery life?
Thanks! It’s pretty good, I’ve got a rechargeable AA in there, and it lasts for quite a while per charge.
I haven’t done a full test so I don’t know the exact amount, but it’s more than enough for the shoots I do, at a few hours at a time.
I believe I’ve left it overnight a few times after forgetting and checked back the following morning to see it still running.
@@TommyHoughton fantastic thank you so much!
It's a really night and day difference between your two reviews. Is it a major difference in post processing or the way you're recording? I'm on the fence about buying this!
My current workflow which I didn't do initially, is having the mic pointed at my face as close as I can, as long as it is out of shot, then I post process the audio in audacity for personal preference. Originally, I had the mic mounted on my camera's cold shoe mount, but eventually I used an extension cable and a boom arm to connect everything, currently, I have it connected to the xvive u5 system (all mounted on a boom arm) for wireless audio as close to the source as possible.TLDR: I have the mic closer to me then before, and I do a little tweaking in audacity. If you can find the mic for a slightly discounted price, I'd definitely recommend getting it. Thanks for watching both reviews, I'm happy to help you in any way that I can! *On a side note, I got worse audio quality initially because I had the mic set to the 150hz filter, rather than the regular setting that I use now.
@@TommyHoughton Right on! Most of the videos I've watched online about the microphone sound terrible. Like people are talking inside a cup, so this was refreshing. I went ahead and ordered one to try on a short film I'm shooting soon. You can officially say you're an influencer!
Thank you so much! I wish you the best of luck with your short film, I would love to hear how everything goes.
@@TommyHoughton will do!
Do you have phasing issues in indoor? And does the raw mic sound sounds thin?
I don’t think I’ve had any phase issues. I don’t believe it sounds thin, but it’s not super loud. To get the sound I want, I tweak it a lot in audacity using compression, normalisation, and noise reduction. I’m not super knowledgeable with audio unfortunately, hope that info helps!
How far away when you when you recorded the audio?
The mic was barely out of frame and pointed at me, so I believe between 6-11 inches, which I heard was recommended. I always try to keep it as close as possible. I don’t remember where it was mounted so I can’t be fully accurate. Hope this helps. Cheers
