I'll never forget seeing The Who perform this song in Vancouver, BC, Canada in the early 80s. During the song, a fan somehow managed to get onto the stage. Pete Townsend waved the security guards away and let the fan approach him. The fan shook Pete's hand, turned to the crowd, put his arms in the air in celebration and jumped into the arms of the crowd. The crowd (myself included) went WILD!! Great song!! I failed a Geography test to win this album from a radio station lol.
Awesome Tanya! You may not be able to locate North America on a map if your life depended on it, but it's worth it because You saw one hell of a show! 🍻
He was so good, just listen to him on this track, constantly up and down the fretboard and he played like that all the time. Definatley one of the best.
Entwistle's hand always reminded me of a Tarantula the way his fingers moved. And L K-O is right about the Toronto 82 version. You can hear Entwistle's bass growling throughout the whole song. He said he played at maximum treble and maximum volume. Best bass player I've ever heard or seen.

I still think Pete's best intro guitar lead was Toronto, December 1982. He never repeats the same riff, which is one of the things that, in my opinion, makes him one of the best lead guitarists of all time. His reputation as a guitarist was built on rhythm guitar, but he was able to go wild on lead guitar, beyond the norms of other so called lead guitarists.
You are right, it took four months of thorough investigation before he was cleared and that should be the end of it. Unfortunately there are vigilante types out there with a lynch mob mentality, who because the verdict didn't go the way they felt it ought to will continue to accuse despite a fair trial held in a court of law. If these people had their way they would have probably gone round to his house with torches and pitchforks, then hung him from the nearest tree without a trial.

And try as I might I could not hear a 2nd guitar part, nor see any real playing motions from Roger. Might have been better off with a tambourine perhaps, the backup singers instrument
Roger was the singer & lead guitarist in the Detours, a band that also featured John Entwistle. John recruited his friend Pete to play banjo & guitar…and eventually the Detours morphed into The Who. Roger’s guitar part in Eminence Front is dead simple, but don’t imagine he can’t play.
I saw this tour in 1982 at the Pontiac Siverdome in Michigan. I am going on May 5 to see them again. My best friend of 30 years was also at the same show but we did not know each other at the time. We met through our wives. Now we want to see one of the greatest rock bands of all time one more time.

The Who have been a part of me since 1976 - my first live gig was, and this is the best gig EVER. This iS a TRUE MY STORY. ABOUT 100 true WHO Fans and Supporters were chosen, picked-up at Hyde Park Corner, and taken, very nervously to Shepperton Studios at Elstree, then owned by The Who. During the 1-hour coach journey, we were told that the band had to record 3 songs for the film, The Kids Are Alright. As this was exciting, most of us had no idea how it set up, we didn't care. Thought there would be many more people. When we got there, there were people only from our coach, the place would be able accommodate about 200 people, at most. There were professional video-recording cameras, approx. 10 strategically placed around the studio/'arena'. Then The Who came on, Pete didn't look happy AT ALL. Anyway, they played 'Who Are You', snf and was NOT good. And off they went. The song was recorded. They came back, Pete now very cheesed-off, recorded it and then Pete had enough of this, he pointed the cameraman, saying "We are here for them, NOT YOU. What followed was truly amazing, excellent, and 'mind-blowing' - they were now at the peak, with Pete turning up the volume to maximum. WE WERE RIGHT IN FRONT, COULD TOUCH THE STAGE, AND THE BAND WERE AT BEST ONLY ABOUT 15-20 FEET (NOT YARDS, METRES, ETC. AND VERY NERVOUS!! THEY PLAYED FOR AT LEAST 2-HOURS, KEITH WAS AT HIS BEST, ROGER AND JOHN WERE AT THEIR BEST - AND PETE WAS IN A VERY SPECIAL PLACE, AND FOR US, AMAZING DOES NOT DESCRIBE HIS MOOD. And Rabbit 🐰 was there as his usual best, and there was another lady percussionist, and was brilliant. They started-off with Substitute, and went ahead continuously for about 2 hours. No breaks. IT WAS THE BEST THE WHO GIG I HAD THE PRIVILEDGE TO BE THERE - SO FEW OF US, 'HYPNOTISED' (as in Won't FOOLED AGAIN). UNFORTUNATELY, IT HAD TO CONCLUDE AT SOME POINT. They went off with our clapping, whistles, etc., and came back to record Magic Bus, and best ever live Won't Get Fooled Again, the lasers surrounding Roger, BUT at ending, just before Roger's fabulous and very special Rock ending after Rabbit had completed his piano/keyboard bit of the song (2-3 SECONDS, AT BEST), SOME IDIOT from the council had noticed a BIT OF ONE OF THE LASERS HAD, AT A VERY LOW, INSIGNIFICANT (IMHO) LEVEL, AND INSISTED THAT THE LASERS ARE COMPLETELY SWITCHED OFF - SAID HE HAD TOLD MANAGEMENT OF THE LAW, ETC., THERE WAS NO CHOICE - OFF THEY WENT. The last laugh was with The Who - it was A PERFECT RECORDING of Won't Get Fooled Again, as those of you who have seen the film will confirm. Pete had climbed on to the massive speakers, and as Roger started his special 'scream', Pete jumped off, slid across the stage, while still playing the guitar perfectly. But it had to come up the end, Keith kicked his drums 'out of his way' and all of them came together 'TO THANK US' - we were deafened, elated, and we had to find a loo. To my surprise and 'shock', Roger came in, stood next to me for a pee - it took me a few minutes to get started!! Left speechless, he completed before me, he had said, 'Hi' and I acknowledged it, complimented the whole gig, and thanked him for "an excellent experience" - NO OTHER WORDS CAME INTO, BY NOW NUMB, BRAIN - HOW EMBARRASSING! IN CONCLUSION, THE EXPERIENCE WAS FANTASTIC. HAVE BEEN A MEGA PART OF MY LIFE, ALBEIT VERY POSITIVELY AND VERY SIGNIFICANTLY TO ME, BUT I HAVE ONE REGRET, THEY WILL NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH!! 🤣

To those who never saw THE WHO in there prime it's hard to articulate there massive hard punching sound that it was just " electrifying" the video above and most videos cannot capture how loud they were. By the way the "82" tour there sound system was massive.
The one i was lucky to see . Saw many live bands and singers ,,,you named . The best was P Floyd and The Who was right behind . Besides Keith ,, was The Who at his best , never thought Pete could sing so good live
Didn’t have a chance to see them in the early 80’s, but I did see them at Foxboro stadium (now Gillette stafium) in 1989. My sister bought my 2 tickets for graduation. One of the BEST concerts I’ve been too. So much energy they put out. Pete is a savage.
I had just completed army boot camp and my older brother and I drove to Louisville kentucky to see the Who's It's hard tour and now being 58 years old and having seen my share of concerts, I can definitely say that the Who was the best show I've ever seen!
This is what I would argue to be one of the best Rock songs of all time! Two chords, straight beat on the drums, keys doing the same thing just about the whole song, and some of the most colorful guitar work I've ever heard. This song carries two messages for me, the first one being that we all fool each other and ourselves pretending to be one thing or another, we get caught up in the "front" that we "put on". The lyrics explain themselves, really. The second meaning I find in this song, is that we should simply focus on ourselves, not get lost in the "eminence front" but instead get lost in a groovy jam, a hobby, nature, separate yourself from the ropes of society and just be happy. Do it in such a way that you don't forget that you're hiding, do it in a way that you forget you're simply out here living. Maybe the song isn't about girls and fast cars, drugs and drinking, but it is about being present and aware, and that's much more valuable than anything another person could offer you.

an old friend of mine who actually taught me guitar (his name is withheld here to save him the embarrassment )was pretty particular when he praised guitarists ,and said that PT was great on 'live at leeds' ,but didn't have much else good to say .until this single came out .he really praised Townshend's playing on the hit single.
''It's not often when you hear a Who track with Townshend on the vocals. But when he stepped up you knew he was gonna blow you away. The greatest band to come out of West-London no questions asked, and no quarter given. Turn it up People!''
I saw them with this same stage set up at what was one of their MANY farewell tours at Shea stadium....the Clash opened for them that night. it was one of the best shows of my life!!!
Denise Dillon , I am afraid that will happen to me, for my b day I got great speakers, I can turn up the volume really loud ,vibrating bass , glad I don't live3 in an apt,
I went to a The Who's Fairwell to North America concert party and saw the Toronto concert on TV when either cable was just invented or we had to pay for some special service. The show turned out to be the beginning of 34 more years. I think John and Keith's absence helped mend fences between Pete and Roger.
I like pretty much all their songs. I don't know, actually, it's hard to pinpoint just one favorite, they have some pretty good songs, so I'm pretty indecisive about my all-time favorite. Have you listened to Be Lucky yet, btw?

Sounds great. They nailed it. But of course they nailed it. It The Who! Love 'em.
an old friend of mine who actually taught me guitar (his name is withheld here to save him the embarrassment )was pretty particular when he praised guitarists ,and said that PT was great on 'live at leeds' ,but didn't have much else good to say .until this single came out .he really praised Townshend's playing on the hit single.
Pete is the man. Great guitarist AND vocalist.
this is ridiculously amazing quality for a live preformance
''It's not often when you hear a Who track with Townshend on the vocals. But when he stepped up you knew he was gonna blow you away. The greatest band to come out of West-London no questions asked, and no quarter given. Turn it up People!''
Only recently discovered this song , thanks for all the great music.
How interesting to see all these 8 and 9; year old posts and here you are 1 day ago!!!
The bass is just friggen SICK in this live version. It makes me want to put down the Strat and pick up the bass. Too damn cool!
Well that's John Entwistle. Best bass player ever behind Chris Squire
I saw them with this same stage set up at what was one of their MANY farewell tours at Shea stadium....the Clash opened for them that night. it was one of the best shows of my life!!!
One thing I regret in life is not being able to see the original Who live in concert Keith moon was badass....
What a rhythm train the drummer is engineering, and the rest of the train follows, love it
PETE TOWNSEND AND DALTRY. ONE OF THE GREAT ROCK SONGS EVER.
Telecaster is so raw , Pete makes it sing 🎶
Pushing my azz thru the 80s ooh the times . Amazing how much is different now...
very underrated album , way better than face dances . the who are way better than most bands all around , thanks for putting this together .
When your bass tone is so on point you can just play whole notes for half the song and still cover the entire low end.
Had a chance to see these guys at Cobo Hall in 1976 for $6. I was a wimpy kid back then and didn't go.
I was there and wimpy too but I made it....
Entourage renewed my love for the Who I can't believe I stopped listening to them for so long
Wahoo Gonzales That happens sometimes!I also forgot them for a while, and now I discover them for the second time!!
Denise Dillon , I am afraid that will happen to me, for my b day I got great speakers, I can turn up the volume really loud ,vibrating bass , glad I don't live3 in an apt,
Townshend's such a Great guitarist. Perfectly placed notes. No fluff.
I never properly appreciated John Entwistle until now
+Mike Paoli Probably the greatest ever!!...."THUNDER THUMBS"!!
+Mike Paoli Check out The Real Me if you haven't already
+Mike Paoli Check out John's playing on "Join Together" with his Thunderbird bass, killer tone.
+Mike Paoli Check out 5:15. And no it's not sped up, his fingers really do fly.
Most of us listened to Pinball Wizard for decades without knowing it was John hammering out those big notes during the opening.
just 1 of my ALL time WHO favs
I went to a The Who's Fairwell to North America concert party and saw the Toronto concert on TV when either cable was just invented or we had to pay for some special service.
The show turned out to be the beginning of 34 more years.
I think John and Keith's absence helped mend fences between Pete and Roger.
Imo one of three great rock songs
Love this tune truckin music
Badass song. Definitely my favorite Who son!
Is it? Wow...Well do you have any Who daughters?
Rain Storm Nope. What is your favorite Who song?
I like pretty much all their songs. I don't know, actually, it's hard to pinpoint just one favorite, they have some pretty good songs, so I'm pretty indecisive about my all-time favorite. Have you listened to Be Lucky yet, btw?
Rain Storm lol...nieces and aunts too...
Here I am again to get a glimpse on Eminence Front , Again . Out of world !!
The Who sound best on vinyl, love the Who, they earned their elite status.

sufficient to the day, is the evil thereof.
My mom passed in 79 when I was 13 and I saw The Who in 82, I would have rather seen my mom! Let it go man!
Class of 87 NJ...

"Law Abiding Citizen" - the cell lunch scene, and then, the t-bone master killer hahah
