    We the former 11 Sqn Ground crew and 2 of our Pilots the then Boss Wg Cdr Jarron and Flt lt Ian Black the now author of the Lightning books, which can be found through Firestreak publications. Met up after 35 yrs at RAF Coningsby and went to the now 11 Sqn for a reunion on 7th Sept 2023. It was a step back in time for all of us who served on the Last of The Lightnings Sqn X1 as we would call it. It is great to see your video of our final months at Binbrook. For anyone interested there is a Lightning at Binbrook still, which is being restored and is open to the public, the Old Lightning Ground Crew are still very active in trying to keep a bit of our British Aviation history alive, so if you are in the Binbrook area at the weekend pop over and have a look and if it is open please show your support for this amazing Aircraft.

    Fantastic. This brings back so many great memories for me. Spent some of the best days of my life at crash gate 3. I was always up there. Push biked up from Grimsby/Cleethorpes. Thanks for sharing.

      Yes crash gate 3 was a good place to go.
      Also plenty of other friendly spotters there.to chat with.
      And get the local Lightning gossip there. Pre internet., or magazines, out of date by the time they were published.
      The Lightning Association, & Lightning Preservation Group evolved from there.To carry on the Lighning interest.
      After Binbrook closed we tried Leeming once. as a replacement. Did`nt bother again.
      We had Church Fenton locally. But not a lot there unless there was a Passing Out Parade on.

      Love these type of comments. Funny how when this was filmed the Lightning was outdated as all hell.

      Plenty more to come. Only tried a couple of Lightning videos at first. But the aviation & military videos were not as popular as my local videos.
      But they are picking up well now

    In answer to the question asked, I believe the pilot sits on the left and the WSO on the right where the pave tack screen is

    This son of a bitch could go supersonic from takeoff " VERTICALLY", sometimes a pilot has an exceedingly MOTHER OF ALL "WHEEZES" and gets paid for the privilege to!!!!, for the record RAF BINBROOK formed part of the UK's "LINCOLNSHIRE BERMUDA TRIANGLE OF AIRFIELDS within the vicinity of my home namely RAF SCAMPTON (2.5M from my home) and RAF WADDINGTON 6 miles of my home, and sometimes myself a" HARRY POTTER " could name a aircraft before I could say" mummy and daddy "..... it's been an absolute pleasure and joy watching and listening to all of the many aircraft from these airfields since the 1960's...... and yes life's a bitch and I married and divorced one to😂😂 guess that makes me rather fortunate to for the right reasons 😉👍

    Did the lightning have a decent radar, could a decent antenna fit inside the intake cone?

    • @251hanomag
      @251hanomag  Рік тому +1

      Yes it did ..You can see it on the old A1 Lightning video. Around 2.30 minutes in. ua-cam.com/video/16leVowX1aw/v-deo.html

      @@251hanomag Interestingly the AIRPASS radar was the most advanced airborne intercept radar for a long time. It was the first mono pulse radar that could direction find the target without conical scan and multiple pulses. This gave it a sharp beam and resistance to jamming techniques that try to break lock by spoofing the returns of the conical scan. The diameter of the aerial seems around 60cm or less. It also featured the worlds first head up display.
