Seeing my house in Italy for the first time

- Does the house in Italy I bought online exist? It's time to fly there and find out. Fingers crossed! In this video I take you on the journey of flying all the way to Italy from Australia via Singapore and arriving in Salento, Puglia Italy.
Driving through the historic town of Galatina for the first time and seeing all the beautiful architecture I had only partially seen on Google. Then it's, drop the bags at the BnB and go find my Italian house.
Finally I get to see my Italian house that I bought online. I'm excited and nervous all at once. I can't believe I purchased a house in Italy without ever seeing it until now and I can't wait to share it with you. It's even more amazing than I expected.
Join me for the first walk through of my Italian villa in the picturesque Salento region of Italy and see the surprise room we didn't know existed. The high ceilings, the big kitchen and so much more. This one is a longer video but there was so much to share.
Discover why we have decided to call my new Italian home Casa Mengoli and then find out how you can become part of the Casa Mengoli Renovations Crew. casamengoli.com/
It's a fun idea I've come up with where you can join in with the renovations but without having to pick up a hammer or a paintbrush or get dust in your hair.
Please share in the comments below the ideas you have for Casa Mengoli. Which is your favourite room. What colour would you paint the exterior? How would you renovate the yellow room? Should we put a loft in the big grand white living room? I want to hear your ideas and if you want to become part of the Casa Mengoli Renovations Crew then click here for all the details: casamengoli.com/renovations-crew
Also, here's the link to our fantastic property finder who made it all possible for me to buy my house in Italy: Davide Mengoli from Salento with Love salentowithlove.com/
We were inspired to buy a house in Italy by watching Davide's UA-cam channel here: / @salentowithlove3314

Thanks so much for watching my channel and if you have any questions about the process of buying property in Italy as a foreigner (Australian, UK, American, or New Zealander) please ask in the comments below.
I'm happy to help anyone else who has a similar dream to own a house in Italy to make that dream a reality. Life's too short not to travel and live where it makes your heart sing.
Thanks again and ciao ciao.

FYI, it's not just Italy that you move with your kitchen. It is very common in Germany also. Good luck with the house, I suggest you take a few days to get the know the house before you make any plans. More important learn your area before you start digging into the walls. Know where the wood mills are, where all the hardware stores are etc... Have fun! (edit) I forgot to tell you to make sure you open your windows daily for 20-30 min. European homes require you to "air out" to help keep the mold away.
Latin America as well
Hi Trevor, thanks for watching my channel and contributing valuable comments. I didn't know it was the same in Germany with kitchens. I wonder where else in Europe too. Good idea, yes, to spend time actually in the house to get a feel for what might work best as well as finding all the places to buy what we need. It's going to be quite an adventure. Mold is a problem and I have been speaking to an architect and builder to understand the different solutions long term but airing the house seems to be the most important thing. Thanks again.
I would change as little as possible…this house has really good bones. What a score for c. $110,000 AU!!!The bottom floor could, potentially, be a self-contained apartment. I would paint everything white, to highlight your furniture and personal belongings. Apart from that I think it would look classy and bright. I would definitely not paint he walls in a colour. The original tile floors should definitely stay. They may not be original, but I also love the wall tiles in the kitchen! And in mum’s room I would keep the bathroom where it is…..maybe just a bit of a revamp! I have looked at many many homes for sale in Italy, over the last few years, and I do believe you really scored with this one. Can’t wait to see how you proceed….
Thank you for watching my video and sharing such good advice. The house does have good bones for sure. Classy and bright is what I am wanting too so white will definitely feature a lot I think. I'm going to look around for some old second hand cementine (? spelling) tiles and see what can be done to save the ones already there. You say you've looked at lots of Italian houses...are you wanting to get one too? Or just curious and love Italian property? Thanks again for your comments.
I am southern italian, and it warms my heart that you got a house there, you were meant for this house 💗💗💗
Awwww I can't tell you how much it means to me for you to say that as a southern Italian. Thank you so much 💕
I agree! 😊👍
The house was set that way it is for a reason.
You dont understand why, because you never lived there. People would try and try and finally would settle the way you found the house.
It was meant to work with zero electricity, not for heating nor for cooling, neither for illumination, and that's important considering the forecoming regulations of 2030 on electricity consumption.
For example the height of the ceilings is studied for optimal air circulation during the hot season (may to october) and for the hot air to go up and call for fresh air to go down, at people's level.
The stones in the terrace are local stones and are perfectly grouted with waterproof new product, only the frame because they breath.
To coat the entire surface of the stones will lead to molding inside.
Everything is how it is out of wisdom and learning from past mistakes for hundreds of years. Congratulations for your amazing home.
Hi Giulia and thank you for watching my video and providing such valuable insight. It's true, the house itself is fantastically cool in the summer and I have an immense respect for the way it has been built. Although I haven't lived in that area of Italy I have lived in several other European countries and I am wanting to learn all there is to know about allowing the stones to breath as they have been designed to. I didn't know about the star vault ceilings design and the air flow so thank you for sharing that knowledge. I genuinely appreciate it. And yes, we are already looking into alternative energy sources due to the upcoming regulations and I love that Italy is so committed to renewable energy. Unfortunately, there are limitations because we are in the historic centre but hopefully we can find a balance between working with the buildings design and the requirements. Thank you again for your advice. I am open to anything more you wish to share.
The black mold is the only downside. Enjoy! I love that you bought your grandfather’s house. What a find!😊
Welcome to Italy!! I live further north in Emilia Romagna but absolutely adore the Salento. I would keep things as similar to the original features as possible. Maybe visit other renovated historic houses in Galatina and the area to do sonething similar. I wouldn't make a lot of changes initially until you've spent some time there. Just make it livable and take it from there.
Hi Christine, I love that you live in Emilia Romagna. Thank you for watching my video and taking the time to comment. I agree with you 100% about living in it first and I am wanting to keep things as original as possible. I want to learn more about the historic workmanship that goes into these old buildings and hire people to help that have that craftmanship passed down through the generations. Thanks again for watching and for your valuable advice. I hope I can do this house the justice she deserves.
My goodness, the house is amazing and definitely larger than I had anticipated. You'll make it stunning, no doubt!
Thanks for checking it out and yes she 🏡 is bigger than what I anticipated too LOL Lots of work to do and so much potential. Hoping I can do her justice.
Oh my word, that is a phenomenal building. I love all the different levels.
The first thing that shouted at me was to keep the tiles and incorporate them into the floor. Restore the doors that can be kept. I’m not one for exposing all of the ceilings, I love the clean white look and I recently saw a Sicilian renovation which used plaster that contained Sicilian marble powder. It looks stunning. I’ve subscribed and will be checking out your crew offer. Thank you and excited to see and share your journey x
Excellent investment .... Salento is becoming one of the most touristic places in Europe. With a well done renovation, the house will acquire a lot of value. The roof is beautiful and you can even put a small inflatable pool on it!!!
Thank you Fabio and yes Salento seems to be becoming more popular and it's easy to see why. With its beautiful beaches, incredible architecture, and the kindness of the southern Italians. Hopefully I can do the house justice and great idea for the rooftop pool...have you been talking to my husband?LoL That's the first thing he said he wants to do. Just need to check with an architect to ensure the roof can hold it. Such exciting times ahead. Thank you for watching my channel.
I hope you get all your plans approved by the engineer and the town council as well. The house is gorgeous!!!
Thank you JaGilo. Yes, that is the first step. We need to get the plans drawn up and submitted for approval. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly and they approve all the ideas. Keep watching the channel to see how that goes.

Exposed stone is ALWAYS better, wherever you can! It’s a beautiful place, you are so blessed!
Thank you so much for your compliments about the house and for watching my video Rhonda. You are right, I absolutely love exposed stone and that's part of the reason for wanting an old historic house in the first place so I agree with you and will be exposing the stone wherever I can. Hopefully it's possible.
Make the first room to enter, with all the little arches at the ceiling, a welcoming area with a sofa and chairs and a little (espresso) table. Then you can sit there with the door open in the nice weather and wave at the people who walk by and they can come in that room and sit with you. That is what I would do. It would make you very popular in your community with your Italian neighbors. 😉👍 And when the weather is colder, or when you want privacy it can be a private room to do computer work, read or just relax. I would put good framed art prints on the walls.
What a wonderful idea! I LOVE it! And such a great way to meet and connect with our neighbours who have already proven to be so kind and helpful. Thank you Ciao Bella for your fantastic suggestion xo
@@BuyingahouseinItaly My pleasure. 😘 Baci.
Congratulations!!! My heart is so happy for both of you! I have been checking and double checking your channel thinking I missed something, but what a nice surprise to see this today during my lunch hour. I LOVE the house....it is a beauty!
Thank you for watching and caring! It took me a long time to get this video out due to other commitments so it means a lot to me that you enjoyed it so much. 🤗
You have a beautiful home, it's better then most I've seen on here, congratulations! So exciting! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!
This house is absolutely stunning!!! If it was my home I would restore it to what it would have looked like 150 years ago or even 200 years ago. But for sure you should make those beautiful ceilings a main feature!! I love your beautiful home!!
Cheers
Thank you so much Kristi for watching and commenting with such positivity. Really appreciate it and yes, those ceilings are just gorgeous. My goal is to find a balance between restoring the history and having modern comforts. Wish me luck 😀
@@BuyingahouseinItaly
I wish you the best of luck and I am excited to see what you all do with it!! Your description of keeping with its historical significance and balancing that with modern conveniences sounds perfect!!
Cheers
Congrats guys. With David's help and experience, you will eventually have a splendid casa. Can't wait to watch your progress take place.
Thanks so much Louis and yes, a lot of the success we have seen in other renovations comes down to Davide's expertise. We are so blessed to have him on our team.
I’m in love with Italy including salento and Sicily I hope to buy a quirky old apartment in an old town with a beautiful square and a church too
I love medieval architecture and art yaaay for you both from vernon bc canada fyi lots of Aussies here too
It's hard not to fall in love with Italy right?! I look forward to when you can achieve your dream and get your property and yes, us Aussies tend to travel to far off lands a lot. I will do my best to share more on the architecture of the region in my videos. Thank you for watching my channel Heather.
Bellissima casa! Congratulazioni!!
Congratulations, you are living my dream! I would be completely overwhelmed but it looks like you have everything under control. Can’t wait to see the finished product!
Thanks Marilyn. I love that it looks like I have everything under control. In truth, I feel a bit like a duck on water. Calm on top but underneath my little legs are paddling like crazy LOL I hope you enjoy watching the journey of the conversion. And I hope one day you can make your dream come true too.
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉!! The house is gorgeous!! I love the candid moments that you captured in the car and walking around Galatina. The bells ringing were music perfection. I will check out your website soon! P.s. your hat and dress you wore during the house tour are breathtakingly beautiful.
We return to Galatina in 7 weeks. Our hearts ache to be back and look oh so forward to catching up!
Thank you so much 💜 I intend to try and capture more candid moments in the journey. You are so kind with your compliments 🙏 and you described it perfectly...my heart aches to be back in Galatina too and can't wait to see you both xo
Amazing story and footage. Love your place... Watching from South Africa. You guys are blessed!
Ohhh Tegan, what a dream!!! 😍🥰
Stunning, the house the history the area. Lots of natural light in the rooms and the high vaulted ceilings will keep it airy and cool. The possibilities are exciting and endless. I saw lots of exotic coloured potted plants in the courtyard and on the roof terraces with outside dining/lounge areas [I could go on forever]. I can't wait to see how the reno's go. From Liverpool UK.
Thank you so much for watching my channel Sindy and I do love your vision of lots of coloured potted plants for the courtyard and the roof terrace ideas are flowing for me too. Please feel free to share any other thoughts (so yes please do go on 😀 ) and hopefully I can do Casa Mengoli justice.
Under the Tuscan sun, is one of my all time favourite movies..I'm sure you've seen it.
Actually Chrisula Under The Tuscan Sun is what inspired me to want to buy a house in Italy in the first place. It's been a dream of mine since the first time I saw that movie, I just never knew how I was going to make it a reality. I have to pinch myself now just to make sure it's all real 💕
Yes but there is one small detail! Tuscany is 700 km from Puglia! And the two regions are very different!!! 👍😉
welcome in italy, i wish the best for you!
you hit the the jackpot with this wonderful home! congratz!
Thanks so much Vivi. I agree that this house was an amazing find and I'm so grateful to be the owner of her. I appreciate you watching my video and hope you enjoy watching the journey of her conversion.
Congratulations to you both! I've been following your journey for a bit. It's such a beautiful
town and the house is wonderful. I like your ideas a lot. You can even rent mums room out to tourists when she's not around for a little extra income
if you wanted to in the future
Thanks so much Roberta for following our journey. I can't wait to share more of Galatina and also the surrounding little towns too. Mum's room has actually already had guests and in the future that's a great idea to rent it out for some extra income to help with the cost of the renovations.
❤🎉 Can not wait to go on this journey with you and your husband…. Busting to see the next video. Love Kristine from Sydney.✌️
Well, i love it the ceiling is so high and then there are these rooftops. I whish you just the best inspiration and support
Thank you Mario for your encouragement and support. We love the high star vault ceilings too. They are so very beautiful.
What an amazing thing to do!!!!!! Best of luck in your new home!!!
Thank you for your kind words and for watching my channel Rudolph.
Enjoyed the beginning of your Italian adventure renovation. Will stop by regularly to see how everything is moving along! Beautiful place and lovely start!
Thank you Kathryn for watching and commenting. I look forward to you dropping by to see how the renovation is going.
I love all the ceilings painted with a warm vanilla yellowish paint and wonderful lighting. I would wash all the beautiful stone all around the house to get rid of all meldew and dampness. Decorate with all Beautiful Italian terracota and began an Australian business of some sort. Congratulations!! I believe both of you will have great fun!!! Best of luck on your new acquisition 🌸🌸🌸🌺🌺🌺💐💐💐🌷🌷🌹
Thank you so much Mayra for your spot on suggestions and for watching my channel. It's true, the first thing to address will be the mildew and lighting will make all the difference. It's funny you should suggest an Australian business as I already have quite a few ideas floating around in my head. Thank you again for your good wishes. 💜🙏
What a beautiful town and house ❤Hope to catch up with you in the summer neighbours! 🎉
Thanks Heidi! It is a beautiful town...you should buy a house there LMAO 😆 Can't wait to meet you both this summer! 💜
Your new home is beautiful🌻 so much character...I love the tiles
Thank you Stephanie for your kind words. I love Casa Mengoli so much. And yes, I am now on the hunt for more of those cementine tiles for the other rooms.
Thats a great house, looking forward to see what you do with it,no pressure
Thanks James. I am looking forward to getting started on it and seeing what unfolds. It has such good bones. :) Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the future videos too.
Congratulations. Oh you guts are amazing! I'd love to live in Italy 🇮🇹..enjoy, no doubt you do have a wonderful life. God bless you botha and your new home. Xxx
Thank you so much for watching my channel Chrisula and for your kind words and blessings. I hope you get to live in Italy some day too and for now enjoy our crazy adventure. 💕
YOU GUYS ARE SO LUCKY, GOD BLESS.
Thank you Francisco for your blessing. 🙏
Loved this video !! Greetings from Texas !! I visited Sicily a couple years ago and fell in love. I would love to buy a home there. As far as renovation tips, I'm a history buff, so I would respectfully suggest a great mix of modern heating, cooling, and insulation combined with interior updates that showcase the historical charm. the right crown moulding, paint, wallpaper, carpets/flooring and furniture to transport the guest back in time. Enjoy entertaining guests as the history, and beauty of your home speaks to them without you needing to say a single word !! I must say, I became an instant fan of the rooftop !! I envision a couple round tables and chairs with umbrellas, like in an outdoor cafe. a small bar off to the side with drinks and snacks. Strumming a guitar as the sun begins to set... heaven !!
Thanks Arthur for watching my video! Oh my goodness you have painted such a beautiful picture with your words and suggestions. That's the exact look and feel I am wanting to create for our guests. And your rooftop suggestion is brilliant! I can see it now. I truly hope I can do the building and your suggestions justice in my choices as the renovation unfolds. I will be asking opinions all the way through and would value your input so I hope you will keep on watching.
Exciting! ❤
Thank you 🙏💕 Exciting and nerve racking at the same time LOL
Congratulations, I love your new casa. You have lots of room.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting Debra. There sure is a lot of room (and a lot of work to be done too LOL) now it's time to work out what to do with each one.
Hurray yah ohmygoodness thank you for sharing. :)
And thank you again for caring and for watching my videos. I really appreciate it.

Thank you so much for saying so Lachlan. I think there is so much potential.
What a great place! Beautiful and huge! Congratulations!
Thank you Maria for your kind words and for watching my video. It really is such a beautiful town. A hidden gem if you ever get the opportunity to visit Salento.
@@BuyingahouseinItaly I'll try to go there someday. Italy has so many beautiful places.
Congratulations! Have fun ❤️😀
Thank you for watching Cindy and for your encouragement. Much appreciated 💜
So charming! Before major changes live in it…see how it feels etc.nice size kitchen! Enjoy
Thanks for watching my video Maura and your advice. I agree, I want to get a feel for the house before implementing any changes. Almost like letting the house talk to me if that doesn't sound too woo woo LOL
I think putting the bathroom in Mom's room in the back and her bed area by the street will make it very noisy for sleeping (unless there is very little vehicle traffic).
Hi Linda and thanks for watching my video. That's a good point you have made as there is a street outside and while it isn't super busy, there is still traffic. Also there are the church bells to consider too. We will have double glazed windows which will help. But it's definitely something to consider. Thanks for your contribution. I appreciate it.
I love the staircase and the high ceiling s
Wow. Congratulations. It’s beautiful. Can’t wait to see what you do with it.
You can offer stay work cations for people in the trades who can donate their labor and knowledge. Free skilled tradesmen. What fun no it could be. Need a vetting process though.
Thank you so much Liz for such a fantastic idea. To be honest I hadn't even thought of doing that. It's brilliant and yes, a vetting process would be needed for sure. I also want to do a lot of the work myself along side trades people with knowledge and experience so that I can learn new skills. Thanks again for your suggestion.
You are so kind to share your journey with us. We hope to be your neighbors one day soon. It’s a dream to live in Puglia. Grazie da Texas
Hi Katerina, thank you for your kind words and for watching my video. Please let me know how you go with fulfilling your dream of living in Puglia. Can't wait to have a gorgeous Texan as a neighbour (my aunty married a Texan so I have cousins in San Antonio and Houston).
@@BuyingahouseinItaly non vedo l’ora di arrivare e abitare in Italia! We can’t wait to live in beautiful Italy.
Congratulations! Your next step is learning Italian while you speak with the tradesmen! Love the home! 👍❤️
Tegan, your house is wonderful. I have to say that you walk around it as if you were an Italian woman who was born in this house. I moved to Italy over 10 years ago and chose northern Tuscany. But the more I see villages in Puglia, the more I think I would love to live there. I recently sold my village stone house, so we shall see what transpires. I wish you and your husband much joy in your Italian villa. God bless you.
Thank you so much Ciao Bella for your kind words. As someone who has lived in Italy for the past ten years that truly is a beautiful compliment you gave me. Best of luck with your next venture and maybe we will end up as neighbours. Salento, Puglia is such a gorgeous region.
Much better to live in Tuscany than in Puglia, for many reasons, I bought in Puglia just because was cheaper at the time.
I like it. Its a great size. that last one was tiny. Seems in relatively good shape structurally I'm so jealous. but i'm living vicariously through a number of y tubers in Tally. I'm 75 and it seems a bit late to move to another country where I don't speak the language and start a similar project. However I do live in a house in Houston Tx, that was built in 1917 and we have completely redone it. over a 47 year long period.but good luck with yours I look forward to following you.
Hi, congrats to your family! Well deserved!!! I was wondering when we can expect an update on the renovations? Thank you! :)
Congratulations, the house is stunning and the town is very nice, I can't wait to see the progress of the restoration work.
Thank you so much Lorenzo. I have fallen in love with both the house and the town and even more so, the people. I hope you enjoy the progress videos as they unfold.
Enough space for family of 5 or 6
Very true John. Which is lucky because I have 8 brothers and sisters.
Bought and paid for house u didnt even know existed ur one lucky people lots people have being conned out of their money at same type thing
Unfortunately that's true Martin. In this day and age there are lots of scams. 😢 It's a matter of finding a reputable company to deal with. Like in most things. There's always good and bad. Thankfully we found Salento with Love and this gave us the good luck and great experience. I always advise, doing your own due diligence before anything financial.
Super!! Ciao👋👋
Fantastic! Congrats!
Thanks so much for the encouragement and for watching my video.
The house is just lovely, esp.after all of the renovations.
Thanks Lulu for watching and for your kind words. I hope after the renovations she will be even more beautiful.

Thanks so much Clifford. I appreciate the support and you watching my channel.
Thanks for choosing Salento! From a new subscriber in Martignano (we are really close)!
It is very beautiful 😊 congratulations 🎉
Thank you so much Jane for watching and your kind words.
Nice.. I'm glad you had a livable space.. I would ask for the oldest pictures of the home from the family. I would try and restore it as it began 🙏
Definitely expose the stones 😍
I agree. It would be a crime not to expose the stones I think. Thanks for watching my video.

Hi Tegan! This video is so nice! I hope to meet you sooner or later in Galatina. I’m going to be there in September if not earlier. My regards to Clark😊 Br, Tiina almost your neighbour in Galatina😊

Beautiful! Good luck with the journey ❤
Thank you Sagi for watching my channel. I think it is going to take quite a bit of luck to pull this off.
@@BuyingahouseinItaly maybe 1 euro home with some renovations
@@Sagi56668 The one euro homes are a great opportunity. Have you watched my video on why I didn't buy one? They are usually (not all) in very quiet towns and require a lot of renovation. If you're ok with that then go for it.
@@BuyingahouseinItaly I’ll have a look ❤️
It is super cute!, You will need to get the walls sanded, treated against mold, primed and painted. But please try to expose some of the Lecce stones hidden behind the wall and ceiling plaster. It may get expensive to expose it all but try to capture some pieces throughout. Its a wonderful hidden bonus the homes in Salento have and gives you peak of Salento's history. For me, it was too expensive so I was only able to expose some over the fireplace but hopefully you can achieve more. Good Luck neighbor!! :)
Well done.
Thanks so much :)
omg how exiting. !
Thanks Valerie. Exciting and overwhelming all at the same time LOL 😀
Congratulation, such a nice house, here in Ostuni the prices are 4 times higher than in Galatina, not sure why maybe we are closer to the airport, I met 7 years ago an Australian lady that bought a house in Ceglie Messapica online. Yes, Singapore Airport is very nice.
Hi the house is beautiful. You have a lot of work ahead however, it’s very nice has a lot of potential. On the yellow room I suggest that you wash the walls it might have a Fresco. It’s a painting that they used to do on the walls back in the days in Italy. If you’ve ever watched under the Tuscan Sun, Francis Mays found a fresco on her wall. Wouldn’t it be cool if you would find one. Let me know if you find it. Good luck.
Your home is absolutely beautiful, just the kind of house I'd love to buy for myself. The courtyard as you enter is perfect for a table and chair set up with pretty potted trees and plants. The church bells are audible but not loud which is a beautiful reminder that you're in italy. You have so many surprise rooms, what an extraordinary home. I've followed you to see the upcoming renovations. Did you find the house or Davido M? Watching all the way from Southern Africa.
Thank you Luci for watching my channel all the way from Southern Africa 🙏 I hope you can do the same one day too. I love your suggestion with the courtyard and agree with you about the church bells. I had found the house online and it was also in the list Davide found for us too. The pics were terrible and we would never have chosen it if Davide from Salento with Love hadn't done a walk through of it for us. His advice was so important to us as he knows the area so well.
@@BuyingahouseinItaly - thank you for your response and I'll be watching with a keen interest on your refurb!! Best of luck and live your best life in Italy!!
Hi congratulations!! I have very high vaulted ceilings so I removed all the wires and top lights (to difficult to change light bulbs) and put smart modern up and down wall white lamps/spots around all the walls about mid way up. Think boutique hotel.
Thanks so much for your fantastic suggestions! I hadn't thought of the difficulty in changing the lightbulbs. And nice up and down wall lights would create such a nice ambiance too. Is your house in Italy too? Puglia?
Lovely
Thanks Amanda. I appreciate you watching my video.
I will definitely watch this series from the beginning. I applaud your audacity.

How's it going! We miss you and the house! Update when you can. Thanks from San Diego!
Beautiful property. If budget permits I would get with a reputable geometry, architect and builder and start getting ideas, estimates and permits. Good luck.
Thank you for your advice Cynthia. We are working with the team from Salento With Love and have started that step. Next step is to discuss all the ideas and work out what we can and can't do. Then apply for the permits. Will need all the luck we can get so thanks for sending some our way.
You are so lucky! With some renovation, you are gonna have a great place in a great place, and totally inexpensive by our western standards. I highly intend to do the same btw. Great investment, even if it isn't meant for that. Congrats and good fortune.
Thank you Marco for watching my video and for your kind words of encouragement. I'm excited to hear you are intending to do the same. In the same Salento area too? It's so very beautiful.
How lovely. How Brave! How full of smiles you are!! Love that you named the house after the previous generations of owners. Just one query, surely the house name is pronounced Men-goh-lee though? (Mengoli). Casa is pronounced as in Cah-zah usually. Unless of course its all pronounced differently down in beautiful Puglia?
Thanks for watching my video Ponkelina and for your help with the pronunciation. Having spent 2 years in Mexico combined with my Australian accent I am messing it up for sure. I appreciate you letting me know so I don't sound like such a twit in the next video LOL thanks again 💜🙏😀
The house is really gourgeous!!
Respect as much as possible the style, few pieces, natural materials. Some rolm ate dark as out thete is so much sun you need to rest in shadow inside the house. It should be fresh inside, isn't?
Thanks for watching my channel Peggy and for commenting. It's so important to me that we respect the history of the building while making it warm, inviting and comfortable too.
Looks like you have a great project!
Thanks so much for saying so Randall. It's a bit overwhelming at this stage as there are so many rooms and so many options but I can't wait to see how she turns out in the end. Thanks for watching my channel.
How unique is the open air court yard as you entered your new home.
When you choose paint make sure it is paint that can "breath".
Thank you Buff Montana for watching my video and for your comment. I'm currently researching all the different things we need to do in order to let the walls breath so your suggestion about the paint is perfect. There's so much to learn about these old historic buildings.
I hope you make it beautiful.
Thank you Camille. I am hoping we can do the house justice too. Thanks for watching.
Hello
Plaese update us with the progress.
I just realized the video is one year ago and the last one
I love your place , it’s big , may I ask the cost $$
I am Australian and looking for a place that I can rent out and I can come over and stay on and of , this is my dream for soooo long ,,, any info would be really appreciated, and can’t wait to see your Reno’s
So so happy for you both 🤗
Amazing property! Looks really clean is that part of Salento with Love offerings?
Hi Dora, thanks for watching my channel and yes it is an amazing property. We were blessed that the previous owner kept a lovely clean house and left it beautiful and clean for us. Having said that, I'm sure Salento with Love would be able to organise that quite easily if you bought a property. I think they offer a service to have your home ready for you to 'move into'. Best to get in touch and ask them.
First time watching a video of yours. Congratulations. Not sure if the two logos are suppose to remain on the screen the entire video. The larger one to the left was very distracting. Good luck on the reno.
Thanks for watching my video. There is only supposed to be one logo. Not even sure why I need a logo but I read somewhere it was a good idea. I am learning as I go and am very new to UA-cam and video creation. I will take on board what you have said and make it smaller in the future videos as you are right, it's not the most important thing to be seen. Thank you for your feedback. Much appreciated.
@@BuyingahouseinItaly Yes, I saw a large logo in the upper left and a smaller one in the lower right. I thought it was just my browser at first. Most youtubers I watch have the small one in the lower right and it’s not a problem. The one on yours in the upper left of the screen obscured you while you were talking and some of the things you were showing. I am looking forward to your videos! Good luck and have fun!
Congrats! Love to come along for the ride. If don’t mind me asking what is your budget for this project?
Thank you and I hope you enjoy the journey as we renovate. We have been advised to budget for the same amount already spent on buying the house to bring it to the level I dream of. So that is 65k euro but we are hoping that by doing as much as we can ourselves it will either ensure we don't go over budget (which I hear happens a lot) or bring the spend down a bit. It will be done slowly too so we can evaluate as we go. Thanks for watching my channel and commenting.
Great video and journey. I wonder if there are "other" costs that one should be aware of beside property taxes, utilities an the normal stuff, for example the property seems to be a whole building on its own, or is it connected to other apartments- if is there a strata or HOA and associated fees? Thanks
Loved watching your vidoe . A suggestion for the airing out of your home speak to your estate agent till you get to know your neighbour’s and you hire a person to air out your house while you aren’t there. You pay for the service. You would not want to get mould on your walls and linen . The linen and any light fixture shades get mould very quickly in a damp area. It has to do with the stone walls that are built in houses over a 100 year old. The have been built with rocks and lime stone or mortar and no vapour barrier. If you renovate the old houses certain parts in Italy require you to dig up the floor and water proof the area and to instal insulation . The architect will be able to advise you what the town by laws are with regards to the building and renovating a property. The builders over Italy are booked up months ahead of time and sometimes don’t get to the work that they have booked for that month. If you get a reliable building crew you have won the lotto. An important tip if you disagree with your builder they walk off the building site and you won’t see them again even if they aren’t finished. Best to get a fluent architect that lives and speaks Italian to get everything done as per the approved plans by you and the town council. Hope that this helps you.
Wow thank you Charmaine for your very important and valuable advice! It sounds like you have plenty of experience with old Italian homes? We have heard it is difficult to get good tradespeople and that they are busy. We intend to utilise the experience and team that Salento with Love have as they have proven themselves to do such good work on other properties. I also believe we just need to be patient and always respectful. The damp and mould issue I am learning all about and we believe the issue on the top floor is due to the roof needing maintenance and then the bottom floor will need a special airflow system almost like a floating floor to minimise the damp. There's so much to learn and I appreciate your advice. Very helpful. Thank you again 🙏
@@BuyingahouseinItaly it is only a pleasure. My family is from Italy so I love watching new life been brought into these old homes.
Just saw this video and one prior. I was wondering if you have made progress on renovations?
Any updates on the house? Would love to see the transformation.
Hey, great video and a beautiful house. I would have liked to know the price you paid for the property if you wouldnt mind sharing. Thank you!!
Thanks Ellen for your compliments. Always appreciated. I'm happy to share that we paid 65k euro for Casa Mengoli but I believe it was underpriced. I have another video in my series about historic houses in Italy for sale 50k-100k euros. Here's the link in case you'd like to see it ua-cam.com/video/DjkS5-nA9rc/v-deo.html
Maybe you can renovate the upstairs rooms first for yourself, and then the rooms downstairs renovate for visitors or rent out for tourists, so you can have an extra income. 😊
Thank you Ria. I like your idea. Extra income is always nice. I just need to learn how the Italian tax system works now. Thanks for watching my video.
This will be quite a project but area seems very nice.
Thank you Stephen. Yes, it's a little overwhelming how big of a project it is but slowly and step by step we will get there. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Beautiful house, can you show plans, how much did you pay
