I'm like her in the way I identify as bisexual. I don't really care about gender, I just want someone who loves me, is committed, and makes life worth while.
I'm bisexual and I recognise that there are more than 2 genders. But I stick with bisexual because if I say I'm pansexual people would either not know what that is or laugh at me, I don't know if I'm attracted to non-binaries, I mean, there aren't a lot of them out there and have you seen the bisexual flag? I love it. The pansexual flag looks like colours you'd see on a piñata, too bright for me.
I'm a bisexual Androgyne, which confuses people until I explain it further. :P it took me decades to figure out my gender identity, considering it's not an outspoken one and I personally hadn't heard of it till I did some Google searching on the subject. For me, gender means nothing when it comes to love. I fall for personality, not what's between someone's legs. You could call me pansexual, but like Tania stated, bisexual can also mean the attraction to other genders on the spectrum. Pisexual sounds like a fun term to use, though. :)
Thanks! ^^ For me, it was trying to find ANY info at all. Androgynes aren't as "popular" as those who are androgynous. I had to make a couple of obscure google searches before I found anything finite and even then it was very little. Still, it was nice to have answers, even though I wasn't really looking for them. :P Trustworthy info is usually found in places where people of any given particular gender are, either online or offline. Looking at forums, vids, and websites created by people who "get it" was the biggest help to me. :)
My bisexuality has just as yours made me much more open minded and as you stated in the beginning I define my sexuality as an attraktion to a spektrum of genders, although I'm not gender blind which is why I do not define myself as pansexual.
By removing the labels I put on myself and the ones around me, I was able to pretty much see the beauty in everyone. People weren't just, men, women, gay, lesbian, bi, straight, trans, non-binary, black, white, asian, latino, tall, short, ugly, pretty, smart, dumb, muslim, christian, bouddhiste, atheist, vegan, vegetarian, feminist, young, old, skinny, fat...they were just people and it turns out, I like people... a lot and that includes myself.
Bravo Bravo! awesome talk. I very much agree with what she is saying. Gender identity is diverse, and we need to be accepting and respect that there are more than 2 flavors of gender. I m beginning to identify as Bi. For me it is about what is on the inside that counts. I want to love someone with a good heart and a good personality, no matter what their biological sex and gender identity.
That was a wonderful talk, Tania! I am in my fifties and just the last 5 years have come to realize that I am transgender, ftm. During that period I have been paying so much attention to gender and the way men and women act and the social differences. It really opened my eyes to alot. I had to do alot of soul-searching to see if I was really just afraid to be more myself and be butch. But the body dysphoria is very strong so I have figured out that I am trans. On a selfish note, it is so heartwarming to have it affirmed that there are lots of people who are fluid in their attractions, so maybe someone will be attracted to me, lol. I think our society is really opening up and tearing down all those confined ideas about what a man or woman should be. Thankfully!!! And thanks to you for this great contribution! I really enjoyed it, you really said alot, made me think a little more broadly. It was eloquent and with humor, always have to have some fun!
bronson mcdonald look I don't know you and we may never crosspppaths but I'm proud of you for discovering and embracing who you are.keep being yourself. I'm sure you'll find someone. Best wishes to you.
Tania Israel is a pioneer on this topic. She has an outstanding research and service record to back up her expansive thinking. And she is ever the optimist. Thank you, TEDxUCLA team, for capturing Professor Israel's smart talk so well.
I'm bisexual and had this very issue. I solved it by using a different (and becoming more popular) definition of bisexuality: attraction to more than one gender. "More than one" means it doesn't limit in terms of understanding that gender is varied and complex. As this definition has grown in popularity, it means that pretty much all non-mono sexualities are included under the bi umbrella- pan and omnisexual, for example. This solution fits me well.
I really loved this talked and after watching it I just want to say that we need to talk about this topics in Mexico at University. Dr. Israel you inspired me, keep on it C:
There are times when getting lost in all the labels can be counterproductive. In my humble opinion simply saying I'm a human I love who I love and all the details really don't matter all that much. Variety is one of the spices of life.
"I searched for a way to reconcile my sexual orientation identity with my views on gender." Oh my gosh, that is basically what the majority of my thoughts have consisted of this past year...Still no answer, only that everything is fluid and everything is natural. Also that there are many sexualities/identities which don't have names and are just somewhere in that fabulous grey area.
I'm so glad she didn't bring up that biphobic pansexual label. Even better than the tongue-in-cheek pisexual add-on is the best definition for bisexual: same and different sexes and genders. Covers the entire wealth of human expression and physicality in one amazing package.
+AnimeLover JJ I thought this same thing at first, but I think pisexuality is more an accepting nature of all expressions of gender, not just people's gender identity. So like a male who's attracted to a female who behaves in a more masculine way is still heterosexual, but they are willing to look past the traditional role of a woman and see beauty in her no matter what she does. Most pansexual people are probably also "pisexual" but it's still kinda different. Like I'd think of pisexuality as a overarching classification of sexualities.
+AnimeLover JJ Thanks for your comment! Many people identify as pansexual to signify attractions to non-binary gender as well as to express their belief that gender is non-binary. I wanted to find a way to talk about the understanding of gender that informs attractions as a distinct construct. Some people view gender as nonbinary but may not be attracted to the full range of gender. So, yes, pansexual is a useful label, but it's not the same thing as pisexual.
I see, so it's more aware of gender role in a since of breaking standards, then choosing from preferred types without having to accept everything across the board like pansexuality?
King David loved Jonathan "above the love of a woman" and there are a few passages which describe the two kissing or 'making out'. It's not any more explicit than that and I read it for what it says, not what 'religious' people' want to interpret it as, or they ignore it altogether for fear.
This is why Pansexuality became a thing. It covers what bisexuality doesnt. We can do away with pansexuality and expand bisexuality. We shouldnt have both.
My first girl crush was female police officer. She kind of looks like Judy Marte but with freckles. I still think she is beautiful, but accept the fact that we can never be.
To me, non-binary is an expression in negative terms for what I'd prefer to hear as "unity consciousness." Although I noticed some discussion of authenticity of expression as a positive value for attraction, I heard more about surface values in this binary world or non-binary world talk.
This is not the first Tedx Talk on bisexuality. This was published in July 2015, whereas at least one other talk "Bi the way, we exist" was published in February 2015. And I feel like there are more.
Yes, you're right. Viet Vu did a great TED Talk on bisexuality that was posted in February 2015. I did mine in May 2015 (and it was posted in July). When I started preparing for my talk, his was not posted, and I didn't see it until after I had done mine. I promise everything else in the talk is accurate, though : )
What a fantastic, engaging, provocative and enigmatic presentation! Much respect and admiration, and congratulations... One unexpected conclusion left by this clever & brilliant trailblazing talk (along with many talks about related themes) is that the English language (and I would contend that indeed most if not all human languages) is glaringly ill-equipped to properly facilitate such a topic. It suffers a great word-deficit in terms of: gender and its vastly varied expression; sex- the currently quite polarized duality instead of the lovely 'spectrum' of the biology and anatomy of our genitals and sexual organs; and sexuality- and the attractions that drive our sexual behavior, activities, desires and ideals. Sadly, in my opinion the unique and creative term: πsexual (while clearly not the same as pansexual as many commenters assert) is ambiguous & unclear probably because it conains the word sexual when what you're referring to is gender perspective. We definitely need a larger, more accurate & specific lexicon and vocabulary in English to describe, express & discuss the colorful, nuanced world of human psychology & behavior particularly in regards to gender, atraction & sexuality. But this is no simple or small matter! In addition to coining such terms, they must be accepted and put into use by the population- which must follow introduction to & education of the new terms. Anyway, I love this video. Thank you so much for this delightful & insightful presentation Tania!
Wait, can I clarify coz I'm a bit unsure. Bisexual: sexual attraction to two genders, not necessarily male and female. Can be a combination of any two genders among numerous gender identities. Pansexual: sexual attraction to all genders Polysexual: sexual attraction to more than one gender Did I get that right? If not, someone pls correct me thanks.
+Elizabeth Lim Polysexual is attraction to many genders (more than two), Bisexual is attraction to more than one gender (any two). But personally i don't understand why people put gender in words that don't mention anything about genderitself. The word is BI-SEXUAL - two sexes, so a bisexual is a person who is attracted to two (both) sexes, that is all. Not gender, gender and sex are different.
+Georgie Georgiev The "sex" part of bisexual isn't based on sex. Sexuality is what gender you are physically attracted to. Some bi people do like the 2 binaries, but some don't. Some are like me and have an attraction to anyone of any gender, but I identify as bi and not pan as a personal choice.
Thanks for asking! Here are my thoughts...Many people identify as pansexual to signify attractions to non-binary gender as well as to express their belief that gender is non-binary. I wanted to find a way to talk about the understanding of gender that informs attractions as a distinct construct. Some people view gender as nonbinary but may not be attracted to the full range of gender. So, pansexual is a useful label, but it's not the same thing as pisexual.
and I think often masculine/feminine is more important to people than actual, um dangly things at times. Not to bring pron into it but it probably doesn't lie what people actually think about
She lost me past the bisexual.. we can be a man and have what is considered feminine traits. Doesn't mean we have to label ourselves different from a man it just means people should stop being so judgemental.
Loved the talk! Just one thing about the the bisexual pi-sexual: isn't that what is generally called pansexual? But I get she wants to add an extra clause, so you can say something like heterosexual pi-sexual.
Nathan Van der Auwera Thanks for watching and for your comment. Yes, I did want to distinguish between people's attractions (bisexual or pansexual) and their understanding of gender that informs their attractions (pisexual).
Tania Israel Except that "bisexual" is actually defined by the bisexual community as "attraction to the same and other genders" not just the binary genders of men and women. The idea that bisexual means "attraction to only two genders" is obsolete.
J Wa True, many people who identify as bisexual don't define their attractions in a binary way (although some do), but this critique of bisexuality remains. In a recent study, I found that bisexual and pansexual people had similarly positive attitudes toward transgender people, providing additional evidence that bisexual people do not view gender as binary.
+Matthew Davenport "for some reason they know my mind better than I do and many of them have hardly ever spoken to me or sometimes NEVER even spoken to me." "I would love a world where we didn't have to be given labels and could just love who we love and be who we are" I find labels only hold any power when you are the one giving them to yourself. They help define who you are, and communicate that to other people. I'm a polyamorous, transsexual lesbian. That's just three of them. I find it better to not give a damn about what anyone tries to tell you you are, especially when they have never even spoken to you. It's annoying, yes. I think people need to stop that, yes. But I don't let their labels of me affect my life. It's their problem how they see me. A quote by Anthony Hopkins: "It's none of my business what others say of me and think of me. I am what I am and I do what I do." Hope that made any sense.
wait, so is what I understand correct? So pansexuality is being attracted to all genders. Ive openly identified as bisexual for over a year now. So pi-sexuality is more of accepting that there are more genders than just two? So isn't the sexuality part of the equation the sexual attraction? Im just confused on that aspect, however this is so interesting and eye opening, I'm just trying to have a more clear understanding. So would say that I am attracted to more than two genders, but I am completely aware and accepting to a wide range of genders, but not attracted to that whole wide range, would that mean I would be identifying as a bisexual pisexuality. My main question is how the sexuality aspect comes in to play here. This is really interesting and if my understanding is correct its the term I've been looking for. So this is basically what I understand: pisexuality is accepting all genders and that gender is a wide construct and has unlimited identifications, but also meaning that you can be attracted to more than just two binary genders. Whereas pansexuality mean being sexually attracted to all possible genders. Am I on the right track? Sorry this is all over the place. This is really interesting and eye-opening and I just would like to know if my understanding of this is clear/correct.
Bi doesn't mean there is one. Like hetero doesn't mean there is only one. Bi means they are attracted to the typical man or woman. The beginning word isn't a representation of your views on the number of genders. It's about which ones your attracted to.
I'm a little confused by the whole "More than two genders" thing... There are boys, girls, boys who used to be girls, girls who used to be boys, people who classify as both a boy and a girl, and people who are one gender but classify as the other. Either way it's still just boys and girls, right???
Cis men are male (gender), cis women are female (gender), trans men are male (gender), trans woman are female (gender), intersex people are male (gender) or female (gender), not both. Neuroscience determines that gender is primarily related to brain structure, of which there are two typical structures, a male one and a female one. So yes, there are only two genders.
I'm sexually attracted to specific facial features and not to the body. The problem - if the person somehow happens to change that specific feature (e.g. haircut or beard) my attraction can completely vanish. So, I guess I'm "featuresexual" :D
+Ama Pietrzak Thanks for your comment. Pansexual can represent attractions to non-binary gender as well as belief that gender is non-binary. I wanted to find a way of distinguishing these aspects by finding a way of talking about only the understanding of gender that informs attractions.
+Ama Pietrzak I did find in a recent study that people who identify as bisexual and people who identify as pansexual have similarly positive attitudes toward gender non-binary people.
+Tania Israel I can personally identify as either(pun completly intended ;p). To me love is love both on the physical and/or emotional level. regardless of what gender that person is or identifys as or doesn't.
See, I disagree with the fact that bisexual implies that there are only two genders, because that would mean pansexuals would not exist to us... I feel like bisexual implies an attraction to both the far left and far right of the gender spectrum, unlike pansexual which encompasses a vast majority or the entirety of the spectrum. That doesn't mean a bisexual person can't be attracted to say transgender individuals or non-binary individuals.
This video represents everything wrong with modern social justice. It is moreso disciseing apolegtics and rhetoric as education, than actually helping anything. These movements in Canada, and Europe have lead to infringements on freedom of speech. I would invite those who disagree to, instead of becoming mad over a diverging opion, to instead why you beileve I am wrong. All I ask is you present an argument that is not entirely based upon emotion.
Why is it so hard to find a decent topic on bisexuality without this "social justice" nonsense. I hoped that because this was a TED Talks video it would be one, but I was disappointed...
As a 'bi 'sexual, I have been confused about my identity for a while, and not being able to talk to anyone without being told on e of the numerous stereotypes listed in this video, I enjoyed watching. Our world is full of sexual injustice (as well as many other injustices) so to be able to hear someone go against these negatives in such a large and successful way was great for me to see. Thank you Dr. Israel!
mr anonymous Yeah well that's good for you, because pretty much 99% of videos concerning bisexuality come from the "social justice types" that I don't want anything to do with, nor do i want to hear their nonsense. As a bisexual I practically can't find interesting or informative videos on the topic without that drivel.
She says "this is the first TED talk about bisexuality".... right under the video is another recomended one... a TED talk on a guy coming out as bisexual. LOOOOOOL. First one, my ass!!!
+coffe8300 Thanks for your comment!
Following queer theory, I see the terms [sex, gender, desire]. From Wiki: "Pansexuality, or omnisexuality, is the sexual, romantic or emotional attraction (*desire?) towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity." How would you describe your pisexuality in those terms? It seems pisexuality is not a desire but just stating the acceptance of multiple gender identites?
I'm like her in the way I identify as bisexual. I don't really care about gender, I just want someone who loves me, is committed, and makes life worth while.
Thank you for posting on this topic. As someone who is bisexual, it is very refreshing to find this video.
same :)

it's totally okay to call yourself bi bc bisexuality can exist beyond the gender binary! also yes, the bi flag is fantastic
Thats great news
Thank you, Professor Israel. This was an incredible TEDx conversation! I'm proud to be part of your community!
Awesome to see an another academic who is bi and open about discussing it! Great job Dr Isreal!
when she said woman with short hair that doesn't wear make up and me so happy! that's me!
No one says women should wear makeup, or that they are expected to. I’m a guy and I wear makeup. Now that’s less accepted.

There are times when getting lost in all the labels can be counterproductive. In my humble opinion simply saying I'm a human I love who I love and all the details really don't matter all that much. Variety is one of the spices of life.
This had nothing to do with bisexuality, it was all about gender
it's called bisexuality "and beyond"
As a non-binary, panromantic, asexual person this made my day like seriously so happy this was made
"I searched for a way to reconcile my sexual orientation identity with my views on gender." Not to mention its heavily implied Jesus and John the Baptist were a couple.
I'm a boy and I have non-binary personality traits, so I don't really want to label myself as being masculine or feminine. I am just myself.
So proud to have her as a professor at UCSB
I love this women she is very charming, intelligent and funny.

Midnight Rune I think you're correct but some pansexuals say that they don't care about gender
Wonderful
Good video.
I wonder what the speaker's thoughts on pan-sexuality are and if she is aware of it as an orientation.
Not to bring pron into it but it probably doesn't lie what people actually think about
There should be one about pansexuality as well.
this isn't the first, there was another one called "Bi the Way, We Exist" a couple months before this one
+itssaliceee Yes, I had searched, but I didn't discover it until after I did mine. Viet Vu did an awesome job.
+Matthew Davenport "for some reason they know my mind better than I do and many of them have
hardly ever spoken to me or sometimes NEVER even spoken to me." "I would love a world where we didn't have to be given labels and could just love who we love and be who we are"
I find labels only hold any power when you are the one giving them to yourself. I am what I am and I do what I do."
Hope that made any sense.
haha pi is pan, that already exists!
wait, so is what I understand correct?
So what would you call someone who is attracted exclusively to cis women and cis men
Bi doesn't mean there is one. Like hetero doesn't mean there is only one. Bi means they are attracted to the typical man or woman. The beginning word isn't a representation of your views on the number of genders. It's about which ones your attracted to.
Amazing :')
Jesus less than 5 minutes in and I feel attacked for never have kissed or even held hands with a person romantically...
Hmm... asexual?
Why am I just now seeing this
a new way of thingking you inspired me thanks a lot... pisexual..
💙💕💜💕
I came out as 'highsexual' and I don't even get high lol, I guess I didn't have the best self-esteem about it
liking someone regardless of gender is called pansexual (by the way)
“Pisexual”
*pansexual
I guess a synonym of pisexual could be polysexual, meaning attraction to multiple sexes/genders...
Lucien Oh, kk
👌🏼👌🏼
what is Jewish Buddhist?
🙋♀️
I am attracted by pies I think I am piesexual lol gotta come out to my mom
I'm sexually attracted to specific facial features and not to the body. The problem - if the person somehow happens to change that specific feature (e.g. haircut or beard) my attraction can completely vanish. So, I guess I'm "featuresexual" :D
she should research pansexuals because that's basically what she is talking about
+Ama Pietrzak Thanks for your comment.
Matthew Stevens so perfect comment. I want to get it to The top! Everyone should read this.
what's with the sinful topics?
I liked it until she got to the gender part GODDAMNIT ;^(
This video represents everything wrong with modern social justice.
K but pansexuality was already a word right?
What is so great about this? Nothing unique here, have we not been talking about this for the past 40 years!!
Most of the TED Talk was about semantics and gender. The talk was barley about bisexuality at all. Misleading title much!
Israel!
mr anonymous
Yeah well that's good for you, because pretty much 99% of videos concerning bisexuality come from the "social justice types" that I don't want anything to do with, nor do i want to hear their nonsense.
As a bisexual I practically can't find interesting or informative videos on the topic without that drivel.
have you seen the tedx talk of Viet Vu? It's really good. I loved it and I'm bisexual.
Very good , I have felt attracted to male nurses yes , and yes I find a lady with high intelligence a big turn on and a very big attraction
that is a beautiful woman good god
She is pansexual, period.
Bi can also mean (my group of gender and the group of other genders)
She says "this is the first TED talk about bisexuality".... right under the video is another recomended one... a TED talk on a guy coming out as bisexual. LOOOOOOL. First one, my ass!!!
Phoenixe1986 this was the first one. The other video came after
It's not pisexual it's pansexual
+coffe8300 Thanks for your comment! Many people identify as pansexual to signify attractions to non-binary gender as well as to express their belief that gender is non-binary. Following queer theory, I see the terms [sex, gender, desire]. From Wiki: "Pansexuality, or omnisexuality, is the sexual, romantic or emotional attraction (*desire?) towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity."
How would you describe your pisexuality in those terms? It seems pisexuality is not a desire but just stating the acceptance of multiple gender identites?
pisexual
