I came here from your wonderful strings comparison article - I usually use Dominants and as I need a new set, I decided to see what the word on the street is these days with other strings...I think I'll stick with my regular Dominants (I like the Peter Infeld ones, too), but the article was really helpful, and I'm going to share it and this video with my students. Thank you!

Wow, thanks for the kind words! I’m currently playing Peter Infelds as well and fell in love with them for the first two months. I’m curious how they will develop now.

@@valentin_a. Oooo now you have me leaning towards trying the Infelds out now! My violin is a little lighter bodied than I'd like, so I compensate with rich strings...I found Obligatos a little dull for my violin but perhaps I shall order the Peter Infeld strings and give them a whirl! Really, I just want to justify buying a second, darker, mournful violin 😂
Like someone commented, the audio is compressed a little but it's easier to hear the differences on my studio monitors, and so I let it play without watching and pressed Pause when I especially liked the tone.
There was another set near the end that I liked, but I must listen again, because I forgot to look and see what they were 😂
      Thanks again x

The preprations gone into ensuring consistent test environment is incredible! Still I can't tell which one is best 😂

Very nice, thanks! I’m also not sure which one is best (for me); currently I’m a fan of the new Thomastik Dynamo that I reviewed here: bit.ly/3lhs85D

For string coting over 100 bones, the evah perazzi with a gold E, they sure sound like 8.99 srtrings they put on the student instruments for 8th graders.

Pretty sure youtube compresses the audio. You'd struggle to tell the difference.

I too struggle to tell the difference between these strings.

I can hear no variation in sound in each one of the tests.
In my opinion, you used the same set of strings in all the video :)

I can certainly hear variation in sound: some recordings seem less out of tune than others 🙂
But I agree that the differences among strings are subtle; I think to hear them one needs good headphones and a bit of experience in string comparisons. I usually tend to think that differences among strings are less important for the audience than they are for the player.

@@valentin_a. I can hear the normal variations among different executions. Nothing else.
The point is that if the real difference in the sound that is given by changing all of these sets is this that i hear, there would be no reason to do it, because they all would play the same :D

Either your headphone or speakers are really crappy, or your ears are. I absolutely hear a difference.

I can hear many interpretations of the same incipit.
Now, it's obvious that there is a minumum differences, in execution. It's quite normal.
But i hear 12 different execution, in different times, with the same violin and strings.
I learnt with time, though, that the average classical violinist is quite dumb and it's very easy to fool him around, with instruments and accessories that cost an unproportionated amount.
      It's life.... :)
