The moral of the story is pretty spot on, yeah. Makes me sad whenever a kid says that Rudolph is their favorite Christmas song because it's about someone who gains acceptance, when really it's about how horrible people can be unless you're somehow useful to them.
Another thing that started bothering me about the story as I grew older; what the hell did Santa do on snowy nights before Rudolph showed up?
In fairness to Santa, it's only in the special that he's a jackass. In the song, we have no particular reason to believe he knows about the other reindeer bullying Rudolph. Oh, wait, supposedly he sees us when we're sleeping and knows if we're naughty or nice... Now I'm going to be wondering whether that applies to reindeer or only humans.

The other characters apologize to Rudolph BEFORE he becomes useful, though. Everybody reconciles and then there's a song number. The storm arrives after that.

Even if it did it could be argued they became nice for their own motives..the reindeer and santa were jerks in that movie and the reindeer were jerks in the song, the only good ones were his mother and his girlfriend who aren’t even mentioned in the song.

Being different (especially very different) will certainly make life harder, I 100% agree with that and maybe the useful/useless-ness situation applies to how you are viewed by society for things like jobs and how you are monetarily valued but as far as relationships go I don't think thats how it works for a sizable portion of people in the world

Seriously, this special confused me so much as a child. It literally features a place called the "Island of Misfit Toys" where all the physically different and/or broken toys have to live. Not exactly the most uplifting, encouraging implication for a kid with a disability. XD

People often ostracize those who are different or don't conform to society right up until the point they are somehow useful to society. Which is, basically, the (probably unintentional) moral of the story about Rudolph. What wasn't shown is that after their usefulness to society has ended, they are often ostracized again.
Society can be pretty sick and cruel sometimes.

Funny you should mention Balto. Regardless of it's inaccuracies, it's still one of my favorite movies probably because I could, as still sort of do, relate to it given I wasn't a very popular kid in school. Unfortunately, in real life, the pretty girl and society in general almost never sympathizes with the unpopular loner guy and almost always runs off with the big, dumb but pretty jock, contrary to what happened in the movie.

What's really weird is all this computer and internet stuff comes from technologies invented in the 1940s. Hedy Lamarr invented the technology that would lead to WiFi during WWII.

I know it's popular now to talk about how this Christmas special sends the message you sing about in your parody; but while I love Honest Trailers, people who actually think this are missing the point of the RTRNR. The whole point of the story is overcoming adversity, learning to believe in yourself, to forgive, and to admit when you're wrong, and that it's *okay* to be different. Everyone right up to Santa apologizes to Rudolph *before* he's tapped to lead the sleigh. And Rudolph considers it an honor to do it! But you were spot on about Santa... he's a world-class grouch. LOL
Disagree completely. I grew up with this special, and it's incredibly disturbing. Here is Rudolph born with a difference, and Santa's acting like his reindeer parents should be ashamed of themselves for not offing him the minute he was born or at least warning Santa they'd given birth to a defective. Always found it deeply troubling and never felt that the ending made up for it. It's not as if Santa ever acknowledged he was wrong to act that way. At least in the song it's the other reindeer who are being jerks, not Santa.

Yeah, that's actually better than how it goes in the original song.
I watched this show for the first time since I was a kid. I came to the conclusion that Santa was a DICK!!!! The elves are singing their little hearts out and Santa's sitting there bored and angry. He doesn't even compliment them. He just walks out giving them the backward floppy wrist while saying "Yeah. Yeah. Whatever. They suck. Keep trying guys!"
Then he insults Rudolph's parents for giving birth to a freak of nature. His attitude is "Ugh!! Strangle it and try again next year you two!!".
Santa is just a dick.

I honestly like the 1998 animated Rudolph movie so much better. Not only did it have more engaging characters, but Rudolph wasn't actually hated by absolutely everyone just for being different. His dad felt bad for him and said that the nose problem wasn't his fault, Santa helped Rudolph feel better, and he was banned from the reindeer games due to supposedly using his nose's brightness to cheat (though it was a reaction of anger when one of his classmates was taunting him saying the doe he liked only liked Rudolph because she felt sorry for him. Also it has songs that have stuck in my head more than the 1964 stop-motion film.

I actually remember watching the last Rudolph special they mentioned where Rudolph saves the New Year by rescuing a baby that will turn into Father Time with giant ears kidnapped by a giant vulture because the bird will turn into ice and snow. Rudolph saves him with a caveman, a knight, and Benjamin Franklin who ride on a whale to save the baby new year.

Paula Robles I've always hated Rudolph. the story told both through the song and the movie was always, to me, conditioning and brainwashing to teach you that fighting the system is futile and you should just accept that you will never be anything and do as you're told. regardless of how much everyone hates you.

cbs version sucks. they took the audio from we're a couple of misfits and put it to the fame and fortune video so it doesnt even match! you can hear sound skips all the time in the we're a couple of misfits part. it also doesnt have the peppermint scene.

No, I remember when I first watched the movie I wasn't prepared for it and it freaked me out when I was little. From then on, I remember I would always leave the room when I knew the yeti was going to be shown.

I tried to ask Screen Junkies, to make Honest Trailers for the Great Mouse Detective (30 year anniversary) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (20 year anniversary). But sadly their anniversaries have passed and I don't think Screen Junkies is going to make an Honest Trailer for either one.
those movies were never big enough hits but Beauty and the Beast nearly won an Oscar for Best Picture back in the day and brought Disney back from the brink of bankruptcy (along with The Little Mermaid & Aladdin) Without Beauty and the Beast there would be no Star Wars reboot, Pixar or the MCU as we have it today. But I love those movies you mentioned.
Yeah but both movies need more love. The Great Mouse Detective is seriously underrated and could be seen as the prototype Disney movie, that would end up for bringing the Disney Renaissance. And Hunchback is underrated even though it's Disney's darkest/most adult film to date. And I can understand what your saying that they aren't as famed or beloved as the other Disney renaissance films. But I think that Honest Trailers would help bring more publicity to theses underrated movies. Plus think of all the jokes they could make about those movies.

I used to have the official toy set for the movie. Rudolph had a tiny black cap for a shiny red nose that glowed and I'm not sure how I kept it for like 4 years. This movie was my entire childhood during holidays...
