How do you get your wrists so “bouncy” when you set? The motion is very smooth when you set it up. Does that kind of thing just get better as you practice?
Thank you for making your videos very well explained! It has helped me out so much! I've been trying to practise these drills, but am having trouble with the low rhythm drill. When I try to just use my wrists, I can't seem to control the ball to go straight up. It feels like one wrist is stronger than the other in terms of wrist flick which results in the ball spinning and a bit of sideways offset. I suppose it's a little difficult to explain, but if you could give some pointers for fixing this that'd be great!
For me when I was just getting started my trainer told me to set against the wall and it helped me a lot. If ya wondering if I'm here just wanna see if I can learn more about setting.
When u aim a set to the hitter, make sure your hands stay in the air frozen after setting the ball to that point that way it won’t go any other way or something
omg same, my sets aren't straight lmao; they can't go straight, or vertically ㅠㅠ it's either the ball does a light spin and goes behind or beside me ㅠㅠ
Thank you Coach Donny for your videos. Have you created a video re: a technique for serve receive, or spike that is approaching at shoulders/head-height? A demo and your thoughts would be appreciated.
Hi coach Donny, First of all thank you for posting such great videos. We are using your videos as training material for our middle school indoor/outdoor volleyball team here in Asia. Were just on our first year of competting. My question is how "high" should a setter sets the ball in an open ball? or different instance. Can please post a video on this. Thanks in advance and more power to you and your channel.
Your video was excellent, coach. It helped me a lot. Hopefully you better make a subtitle for your next videos so some non-native english speaker also learn easier! Thanks for your time Donny!
@@ElevateYourselfOfficial they should have actually replied, so that the people who speak their language would better understand what you are saying coach Donny. And I’m trying out for my school team in a month. I watched your other tryouts video, but I think I need some work on my sets. I think Amy wrists aren’t as springy as my jump, but can I make it into a team even if I have average sets but a great spike??
You’re probably hitting the ball with the palm of your hand. Maybe try catching a volleyball like you would a set and see if the ball is touching your palm.
I was always told “soft in hard out”. When you first touch the ball you sort of catch it for about 0.01 of a second with your fingertips. This is the soft part. Then you use your arms, legs and wrists together to push the ball. Also make sure you are sort of pushing your shoulder blades together. This helps to get the correct arm positioning
Coach Donny, really appreciate your videos! I appreciate that you're trying to help players quicken up their sets with these drills, but I was hoping you might be able to delve into it a bit further? I've heard Courtney Thompson speaking about working on a "fast finish" in a coach your brains out episode, but unfortunately didn't go into any details. I'm playing setter for an indoor club team for the first time after 10yrs of injury. I was formally a beach player, so have received feedback that my deep dish may be getting close to a carry, hence looking for advice to fix it up 👍 I'd really appreciate any further assistance you could give!
Donny, would you be able to make a video tutorial on how to set the ball when the pass isn't perfect? Like when the ball is passed or received and as a result the ball is far away from the setter. How would you adjust yourself/ position yourself to set a hittable ball for the hitters?
I am really enjoying your videos and the information is well explained. I have one question on setting that has to do with your triangle square theory: I have been taught that you need to keep your hands in the shape of the ball at all times and to avoid the over extension (your square portion) as it can result in a inconsistent "flat" ball. I have been told to keep this form you push your hands out from the base of your hands so that when finished your palms will face the direction of the ball. Do you know this theory and if so how does it compare to your theory? Thanks!
I did some testing, and as it is with humans being so different, and I having longer than average fingers, I can't wrap all my fingers around, even when setting high, I'm only able to use 3 fingers from each hand. When I do use more than 3 from each hand, it seems that my fingers completely wrap around the ball, grabbing it instead of bouncing it. But less fingers, less power, less accuracy. So what I did to solve this was specific finger training excersises + setters ball and wrist stretching. Still working on getting enough power without using the elbows. Even if the height of the recieve affects my setting power, the higher the receive, the more force I can return via the setting. And this may sound stupid, but much like rubber. Edit: Also at first, as expected, the less fingers used, the more stress on those specific joints, but for me that dissapeared the more strength training I did.
Coach Donny, you are wonderfull, your explanations and demonstrations are very clear. Thank you so much for this! Would you use the low rythm technique for a quick (1) attack?
If I set it to myself, it’s just fine, but when I’m playing with others, my hands are poorly distanced and it falls on my face or spins like crazy or my timing is off, yielding the same result. What do you think is the issue?
Consistency on hand and finger placement? My first thought at least. When you're setting to yourself, you're conscious of stopping the spin and direction, and when you're setting to others you're really only thinking of getting the ball there and not how. That and combination with setting to yourself isn't the same as setting to others, it requires a larger array of motor skills. One example, you're setting to yourself, standing on one place. You practice that and get good at that. You go to practice, and you have to move, you can do that, you have to set, you can do that. But the synchronization is not there for both of these actions. Try having players bump or throw the ball in different spots, and you setting back to them. This is all speculation though, I can't say for sure because I don't know you though xD
This video is about three years old, sorry if you have already made this video or if this was in this video (it probably was) but could you maybe do “tips to make your set quiter”? Haha iidk! But thanks sm!! This video itself helped tons!!
Can you make a video on the different heights to set the volleyball ball? Like for outside hitters, middle and back row... that is what I am a little unsure of.
when you say "all your fingers" you mean pinkies should be contacting the ball as well? also, do you "pinch" your thumb and index finger together during the follow through?
Just wandering is it best to set the ball off the net for your hitters? or a few more feet to ensure the hitters dont touch the net during their swing?
So I've been setting with only my thumb, index and middle fingers. I was wondering if which is better or more accurate. Saw this video and made me really want to change the way I set . But I want to know from you if it changes anything.
Does the toss have to be silent and have no spin? I always end up hitting the ball. Also I try doin the self-toss practice, I just can't keep the ball between hands and it keeps going behind me 😓
Donny, i'm 16, 5'10 without shoes, and 135 pounds, so obviously I need to build a base of strength, but my question is, will my vert decrease as a result of increase of weight ?
When hitting the ball does it need to be silent?..my volleyball coach keep saying try not to make a noise while touch the ball..but it always sounds like a Nuke when I hit it...
Victor Oliveira not exactly, but it’s better when it’s quiet usually you won’t be called for a lift or double touch. It’s better to have a soft clean touch to maximize accuracy and timing
can you please make a video about hand positioning when setting the ball please thank you.. im just using only 3 fingers which is thumb, index and middle finger.. i just wanna know if im positioning the ball right.. i dont know if i should use all my fingers to set the ball
Hi tryouts for the volleyball team is very soon and last year I was the teams setter, but over the summer my sets have become lazy and I've been practicing everyday. My question is how do I make the ball not spin so much and get it to target easily. Thanks!

This is my first year playing volleyball too so I have no experience at all can you give me some tips and suggestions please?
You gotta do pushups, but instead of using your palms, use your fingertips. But if you cant do finger pushups start by either repeatedly landing your fingertips on a wall while you lean towards it, or just practice setting with a basketball
I know I am major late on this video but I have try outs today for school volleyball and my coach said we dont have to know how to set yet but I still have a question. When I set all my fingerprints contact the ball it just does not go anywhere. Why is that?
How can I work on setting softer like you do in your low rhythm drill? I set with my fingerprints but it's always kind of hard and makes a louder *pat* sound and I can't seem to "give" with the ball. I've tried setting against a wall closely to work on wrist action and throwing and catching the ball to myself, but nothing seems to help me improve.
Absorb more of the ball. The pat sound is because the ball is hitting your fingers while your arms are stretched and locked. So keep your elbows tucked and close to your face before you release.
i rly liked this video, I've been attempting to set but I always got the timing wrong and all the power from the ball hits one section of my fingers and I end up getting a bad finger :(
I am probably the worst setter out there so if anyone has any tips please lmk! i literally can not bend my wrists or get all my fingers on the ball and i either double everything or it doesn’t go anywhere near where it needs to! help!
