It's deeper than just horror though. Metroid Prime was...chilling, at times, and so is Super Metroid. To me, that's the real feeling Metroid should come with. Chills and awe.

With how much emphasis they put to show Samus' eyes and powerless she is on this new planet, I really hope they add a quick level or a full blown side quest where you play in her Zero Suit, like in Zero Mission, to really hammer in the theme of dread

With Ridley gone for good, it's time for the giant lizard to make a comeback after being put on the sidelines for so long. After all, he was one of the original bosses in Metroid.

Nintendo, this is the way. Definitely a day one purchase. Let Metroid thrive alongside the Marios and Zeldas. This is looking more and more amazing, and Samus deserves to be up there with the biggest IPs.

@@Marcus-Does-Piano Not just that. Metroid always sold poorly. Breath of the Wild alone outsold the entire Metroid series. Of the 35 years it has existed, it spent 19 of them on hiatus. If even a series as niche as Metroid can actually become a success on the Switch, then Nintendo might be willing to give their other "forgotten" series a chance.

@@NuiYabuko the series would've been shelved and that's mainly because Metroid genuinely doesn't sell well in Japan. The majority of the Metroid fans are in the west which explains why the sales for the series had been lackluster though.
Don’t forget Prime 4 is in the works. That could come out next year and it’s been in development for nearly 5
This is the Metroid game we’ve needed for a long time. Finally going past the story of Fusion, a planet that isn’t SR388 and exploration that doesn’t have limited ability options. In the Trilogy and Other M, the screw attack and space jump had limited jumps anyway. I see this as an absolute win!
fusion was my first metroid and this was my exact thoughts fusion with way more exploration im in.

I was a little too young to understand how to play that game but thankfully I've kept it with me throughout the years and let me just say that Nintendo needs to stop making cashgrab Mario games and focus on other important IPs such as this one.

I havent played a single metroid game. This game looks amazing! Action, adventure, suspense, horror. The being chased by crazy robots that skulk around really fast is what's selling me. 😃

Can't beat Metroid 3D on the Wii. Yes, you heard me right, the Wii. It's by far the best Metroid game. And Resident Evil 4 on the Wii is the best iteration of that game too!
My first Metroid game was Fusion. I could never beat the final boss. I'm a noob. I love Prime for the music especially, but aliens don't exist. SPACE THEREFORE ALIENS is as dumb as RAINBOWS THEREFORE LEPRECHAUNS.
Insane alien believers actually argue that the more evidence of absence of aliens there is (more empty space), the more likely aliens exist. Since when is more of a failure more of a success?
Don’t play Metroid Prime or it’s sequels until playing dread and super Metroid(zero mission if you can find it). Metroid Prime is one of the top 10 greatest games ever made, and it’ll spoil you. Despite being for the Super Nintendo, super Metroid holds up to this day. It’s wild how many SNES games can claim that. Oh and play Metroid Prime in order(prime, echoes, corruption) the story will make more sense.

Nintendo waited so long that Indie devs were like “Fine, I’ll do it myself,” and Nintendo finally took notice and wants its throne back.

It's not too surprising since the Chozo DID invent Mother Brain, so seeing similar things to it on a Chozo planet makes sense.

By the sheer number of comments of people who have never played Metroid and want to play this, I think we'll see the greatest sale records ever for a Metroid game.

Here's hoping, Metroid is a criminally underrated game series. I dunno if this new entry will have the cult success Hollow Knight did recently, but if it even has half I think we'll be on track for more fantastic games in the future.
I hope so, 2d metroid games are underrated (especially compared to the prime series. I get people like those (i cant understand why but thats just me) but i really hoped that more metroid love would be given to the 2d games)

Imagine being a small developer studio and pitching a fusion remake to Nintendo. Only to have them tell you to make a NEW entry to one of the best Nintendo franchises ever. And then killing it! Mercury Steam really went full ultra on this.

@@gavinfoote_Music_Surf Originally, yes, then Sakamoto said "Actually, Metroid 2 is in more need of a remake than that one.", so they remade Return of Samus instead, which Sakamoto used to see if they were good enough to finally make Dread. Evidently, they passed the test.
Before that they were tasked with remaking Metroid 2. And did better than Nintendo could ever dream to!

Having just finished Metroid 2: Samus Returns, I cannot wait to see what they bring to the big screen using the mechanics perfected on the small screen. Samus Returns was amazing and I loved it. This looks fantastic.

I was searching through to see if someone else pointed this out. We're _finally_ post-Fusion. It's always really, really bothered me that every game since then was a prequel. I mean, if Nintendo didn't want to go forward with Samus' new look, they shouldn't have done it in the first place, no matter how great the game was. It looks like the visuals settled on a compromise because those shoulders are just too iconic, but I'll take it.
@@delcox8165 its not that they didnt want to, sakamoto who is one of the creators of metroid just couldn’t do what he wanted for dread with the hardware at the time, thats why its on switch now after 15 years of it being rumoured
@@meta9492 Seems like a canned excuse; what sort of things? We've had 360° aiming and all sorts of stuff since the Gamecube, it just didn't look this pretty.
@@delcox8165 Dread is about facing an enemy that forces you to run from, which happens to be the EMMI. The EMMI is designed to be the ultimate hunter against Samus, so the AI has to be peak level, meaning that it cannot have an exploitable AI like the SA-X or the Space Pirates from Zero Mission.
@@delcox8165 The thing is that a lot of developers gave up on releasing AAA 2d titles on consoles for a while. Believe it or not, Symphony of the night bombed big time, which is bonkers considering how well that game is.
So 2D was pushed to Handhelds, and the hardware on handhelds wasn't up to Sakamoto's liking for dread. Mainly I think the E.M.M.I AI was the culprit.
Luckily, indies saved the 2d scene and hopefully Nintendo shows these big AAA companies how to market and sell a 2D title with a AAA budget.

I'm an old school NES kid. The original was amazingly mindblowing. Literal game changer. I'm so stoked for this game I took the Monday and Tuesday after release so I can play 4 days straight.
I feel like even the phrase "game changer" is an understatement. That game invented one of the most popular sub-genres.
Cant wait to play it. Is gonna be awesome.
The sad part will be... you'll likely only need the 2 days to play and beat it. It'll prolly be beatable in the same time Samus Returns was... under 9 hours on a first exploratory run. Now, if we ever get the next Metroid Prime... Yeah, that's probably a 4 day event provided it ain't like Metroid Prime 3.

The gameplay description made me realize this trailer isn't for me or anyone else very familiar with the series. We're kinda taking for granted that we already know what to expect but there's younger people who haven't played any of these games. This was for them, and that's okay. More Metroid fans means more people I can get hype with later on as we get a new game every 10 years.
I got stuck in Metroid 2 as a kid because I had no idea what the formula was and it was too much to ask to remember obstructions when I had other games set on a linear path. After learning more about how it works through videos and trying out more games, reaching the cycle of powering up and uncovering more has me hooked, so maybe that initial barrier is what has held the series back for a lot of people? The current marketing seems like a very good idea
I found super metroid to hard but recently played it on the switch still hard but got futher than i did still cant complete it!

Play fusion and zero mission to get an idea what you are in for
The trailer may mention a lot of stuff that people who know the series already expect/know about, but the new stuff it DOES mention looks awesome (EMMIs, hinting towards a greater threat beyond what we know, etc.) The darker tone of the trailer is also pretty cool (That EMMI animation was brutal). Overall, super excited for this game, and glad that it might introduce more people to the series!
I love how Mercury Steam succeeds at making Samus look badass, like at 3:05 where she doesn't even flinch by Kraid or the mini cutscenes or her animations. It just keep getting better and better. Also Speed Booster + Shinespark is back!

This game seems to catch the atmosphere of Super Metroid and improves it with these hunting sequences. It looks very polished and beautiful. Can't wait.

@@KM-ye3ij Not 100% guaranteed given the series’ sales history, but I do believe you’re right. Especially since it’s on such a successful system like the Switch, and the marketing push has been pretty strong by Nintendo. Plus, the game looks very good and polished! It might bring in some crossover casual gamers for the holiday season, but I’m not sure how many people will hold out for Metroid Prime 4, since those gamers might prefer the 3D Metroid, you know?
I’d be shocked if it didn’t do a million by end of holidays, and 3 to 5 million after a year! Life-time sales, I’m hoping for at least 5 million!

In the first trailer, I expressed my skepticism regarding E.M.M.I rehashing the SA-X, but all of these new upgrades and enemies like a CHOZO WARRIOR and META KRAID made me instantly eat my words.
The quality of this game increases every time I see it.
I seriously can't take it anymore!!!! I'm EXTREMELY excited to play this game, because I've never heard about Dread until this year. I've played every game in the series, but I never heard about this game ever, so this is all new to me

Just been playing through Super Metroid for the first time. This series is so great, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to play 2D Metroid games. Don’t get me wrong Prime was great but man alive this series is so awesome! And Dread looks amazing, can’t wait!

Metroid + 2.5D = perfection.
I still prefer sprite art, personally, but this is pretty decent 2.5D. I've seen a lot worse.
The hype just doesn't stop with this game. I love that new ice E.M.M.I that froze that enemy and shattered it. Also the updated Super Metroid music gave me chills I hope that's an in game OST and not just for the trailer. Now if I can just get my hands on that Special Edition.

Not the same studio, though. This is MercurySteam, not Retro. The latter is working on Metroid Prime 4. That said, Dread sure seems great and buying it is a no-brainer.
Never really got into Metroid, but between the options of this and being able to download the Prime Trilogy for Wii U, I think that’s about to change.
It's best to start off by playing Metroid Prime and Super Metroid right next to each other (either order, honestly), just to understand the core idea of Metroid's Metroidvania style and how that translated well into 3D. From there, anything goes.

I'd recommend Fusion and Zero Mission as well since you have the Wii U. Dread's story takes place right after Fusion so I think at least Fusion would be a good game to play before Dread.
I remember trying fusion on the 3DS as an early teen, but it didn’t hold my interest back then. I get the feeling that’s gonna change, though.
Don’t forget to buy and play Fusion. It’s a short game, but it is directly linked to dread, since Dread is Fusions sequel

I mean Valve let verified Steam account holders reserve a copy of the Steam Deck for the first like 3 days after announcement. Nintendo could easily have done the same. Or at least address this issue to the fans at all, instead of just pretending they don't know scalpers got them all.
Never played a metroid game before but this looks dope.
Highly recommend the prime series dipped into some horror and had great gameplay.
There were a few jump scares in Super Metroid as well. I'd highly recommend you give that one a look if you like the 2D aspect of this trailer. It was a fantastic title!

@@Ryskay With Switch Online you can play Super Metroid right now with SNES Online but I can't speak for the Prime games (only ever played the 2d series)

3. The green one. It can follow Samus through tight spaces

5. The cyan one. It appears to move slower, but it’s scanner freezes you as it gets closer

Purple could chase her underwater. They seem to give Samus some abilities. Could be the slide or cross bomb for green, speed booster for yellow, ice missiles for cyan, gravity suit for purple...

The first 2-D Metroid game to go HD.
Breath of the Wild introduced Zelda to many new people, making new fans when it launched. I hope a similar effect happens with Dread.

There’s tons of new people trying Metroid because of Dread and the game isn’t even out. … streamers, UA-cam comments, Twitter etc…. 2 old Metroid games became the 1&2 top sellers on the Wii U and physical copies of SR sold out on Amazon as new people hunt for ways to try Metroid in anticipation .
Will it sell like BOTW … no but it has definitely brought a ton of attention to Metroid and tons of new people trying a 20 year old game and loving it. Like BOTW it will most likely be the best seller of the franchise.

Welcome to the club...the metroid series is awesome..also the SNES Super Metroid still holds up today
get your self an emulator and play metroid fusion, it was the finale game(story based, until dread was announced) of the franchise. Really good, but pretty easy for a metroid 2d platformer game.
