I think Crusaders had a splinter faction that became Black Knights then another splinter faction from that became Dragon Knights. Also I wondered about ForestMen and WolfPack , saw a few CMFs that were Dark Green Forest Men but had a Wolfpack Insignia. Also glad to see a Wolfpack member is back in the new Castle town set
Awesome episode, your videos are perfect for learning about vintage sets! I was really intrigued by the magazines and photos you showed during the video, how do you find them, and what are they?
My personal opinion as to why the Black Knights and Dragon Masters have the same long shield with swapped colors and why there are the 2 instances of the Dragon Masters using Black Knight shields is that the Dragon Masters are a splinter group which broke off from the Black Knights. Why could be many reasons, but I tend to think it involves the factional view of using magic and dragons as weapons. It would also explain why the Dragon Master torsos have a blue and red color scheme matching the Black Knights more than their own shields.
@@BrickingUpBrad as a kid I always used to think that Majisto was using his magic on Black knights, making them become Dragon Masters. Also the same thing with Fright knights - the witch turned green dragon to black dragon for fighting against the Lion knights. My theory explained why few sets (6037,6087) had green dragons with red wings instead of black/orange wings - those weren't tamed by magic yet. Something like this been used in Warcraft game in early 90th (first or second part, can't remember) when sorcerer could turn army of opponents into allies
This is my lore: Considering Royal Knights castle looks kinda similar to the Black Knights one - my guess is that Royal Knights had conquered Black Knights. The castle was damaged during the siedge and was rebuilt. So some Black Knights joined the King's army (as thir lan now belongs to the King), others may have joind the Dragon Masters. Also Royal Knights could conquer the Wolf Hideout and rebuild it into the Draw bridge. Some Royal Knight guards have that black moustache faces that Wolfmen had, so maybe even Wolfmen were hired by the King... Then the Royal Knights defeated the Dragon Masters and during the final sidge Majest casted some powerful spell that wen out of controll and destroyed the Dragon castle together with the rock it was build on. Later the Fright Knights arrived in the Dragon Masters area. Their army was consisted of the suviving Dragon Masters, and that's why they have similar looking helmets and some similar faces.
I saw it as the black knights turning into a knightly order after the death of thier monarch. With the large amounts of ships assumed they were located by the coast. That thier kingdom fell into decline after the many wars, and the effect of the chaos resulted in the rise of a new king from the royal knights house hold. That there were a religious split in the black knights where the majority sailed away, but a small core created the dragon knights. With one of those knights one day uniting the kingdom under the royal lion. Only for him to face a rebellion from a vassal in the rocky mountins…
@@BrickingUpBrad was playing with lego castle at the tail end of the black knights run. so as i was playing with them, disney was on in the back ground. watched way to much gummi bears. Might sound silly, but one of the part of the lore of the show is that the majority of the gummis sailed west to escape the humans. leaving thier cities and inventions half-complete. think west rome 1-2 hundred years after the fall of rome. Black knights having the biggest fleet, it was only natrual for my child brain to assume they traveld west for glory/adventure or somthing other. The lack of siege weapons in the royal knights, dragon knights and freight nights line, could be a result of the sudden lack of sieges. The hugh black knight army was simply not there. So some castles fell into disrepair, with only a few big once standing. Basil, for example, is a vassal to the royals, in my world, but he doesn't seem to have that large of an army. even his keep is almost deserted. fast forward a generation or two, and Cedric's gang of bull knights is only 3 men strong. Far from the huge armies from the late 80s. The kingdom, has simply been depopulated.
Given the Black Knight, who led the Black Falcons in the Knight's Castle, is the exact same figure (cas175 on Bricklink) who appears in both the 1988 joust and the Black Monarch's Castle, but not the Black Falcon's Fortress, plus the note of "he went mad," it can be presumed that the Black Knights are a splinter faction of the Black Falcons following this madness. This likely weakened the Black Falcons, who began to appear less and less, until we finally see their last appearance as two soldiers (who, notably, have grey legs, while all other Black Falcons consistently have black) who have defected to join the Black Knights (now under a different ruler since the death of the Black Knight/Monarch).
House of the Dragon has added some nice new potential context as to why the Black Knights and Dragon Masters were enemies with the same sigil on their shield, just in different colors. And frankly I’m still TB all the way. 😁
Black knights are literally crusaders and black falcons mixed except for their torsos, black knights dont have their faction logo on the torsos, and also black knights have the best lego castle torsos ever! there are over 6-7 torsos on one faction different with black falcons and crusaders their main torso is the one with the faction logo but the black knights are unique which why black knights is my most favorite faction EVER and i would never change my mind!
Beautiful video! And an interesting thing to mention in 12:02 actually... You can see some Black Falcon soldiers standing around the black knight! That begs the question of whether that was a mistake from Lego, or a hint that maybe the black falcons joined (or got conquered by) the black knights. I always liked the Black Knights, but I agree with you about how sad it is that they never got unique torso prints!
I agree with your top point I noticed that to! The real reason is they came with the sea serpent and when Lego does a video about some sets they use all the figs in them to advertise it better. But it does back up my point!
Um, actually... the original Knight's Castle 6073 had a small dungeon. That was my first Lego set as a kid. It didn't have the grated door like the later sets, but it indeed had a dungeon.
While not my #1 favorite faction, imo they were the strongest and coolest portrayed by LEGO. I always imagined the dragon masters as a breakoff faction of the Black Knights, which is what led to their demise. Still, the Black Knights were iconic and one of my all time top 5 factions
Personally the Black Knights and Crusaders are the only Lego Castle factions I've ever liked as much as the Wolfpack and Forestmen/Dark Forestmen. I didn't see the Black Knights, Crusaders, and Royal Knights as separate factions, but more like a realistic medieval military where you've got a mix of salaried soldiers, mercenaries, and proper noble knights. I like the old breastplate and scale armor prints, how simple they were and how universal they were to these various factions with their lack of insignia, I see that as just "That's how armor looks on a Lego minifigure" not "this is the uniform of a specific military" the way the lion and crossed axe crests were for the Crusaders, the dragon crest for the Black Knights, the falcon for the Black Falcons, and so on. As for "never getting a king minifigure", I'd say it's more than likely that the most elaborately bedecked knight of the big castle is in fact the king of the Black Knights, the Black Monarch himself, wearing his full battle harness rather than his ceremonial garb for attending feasts, tournaments, and parades. I didn't have any lore for my Lego castles back in 1989-1998 (around the time I subscribed to Lego Magazine and Fright Knights and Knights Kingdom started coming out) so I made up my own. I had a Black Falcon archer with the short brown hair of a Townsperson, the young Sir David who was a junior member of the order of Knights of Cuckawhack. The Ghost of Castle Cuckawhack cursed all its residents to say _"Cuckawhack Cuckawhack Cucka-Whack-Whack-Whack"_ , which can be staved off by drinking water. Their most evil nemeses were the Dark Lord, simply named Dark Lord (an all-black minifigure with a black head from a ghost and a black bullet helm) and the Dark Druid (a Wolfpack torso, black ghost head, and princess hat). As well as, of course, fighting ghosts, skeletons, pirates, dragons, and any action figures or stuffed animals I had at hand at the time.
Odd that never occurred to you that the lady from the Knight's Challenge could've been The Black Monarch. The stand has the flags of the Black Knights, so it's not a stretch to assume she's part of that faction, not the Crusaders. I guess that would mean she's dead or has a pet ghost.
Really appreciate all the research! Great job! Is there any official lore surrounding the original Crown faction from the Yellow castle or any of the three visiting knights? I remember the CMF Series 13 Classic King's description says he has "fourteen brave and loyal knights", and "they have constructed a fine golden castle", but sadly have to build their own horses. Do they appear anywhere else? I know the Chevron shield and Shamrock shield show up in the new castle. I bought TWO, but have no place at all to build it right now. 😱 Of course, prior to the '90 helmet visor you mentioned, we had the original '78 Yellow Castle visor. As you know, that only appeared in 4 sets, the castle, the tournament, and 2 minifig packs. The white visor and grey visor were only ever available in the Yellow Castle, making them relatively rare! I always thought they discontinued them because they were so fragile, which seems to be the reason they redesigned the helmet. How does everyone feel about the old visors? I think the new ones actually look more robust, but the older ones seem more elegant. I usually imagine they are more expensive and only the wealthy or noble might have them. I've seen them listed for anywhere from $5 to $50 on BL, so I guess that checks out! GREAT VIDEO! Really enjoy the longer format. Hope the comments help the algorithm!
Appreciate the love for the video! So yes in the lion knights castle (amazing set highly recommend building it!) does contain some lore for the yellow castle. I talk about it in my Easter egg video for that set! You are right about the visors I should have mentioned that but completely slipped my mind. I had a lot of information for this one😅😂 But I do agree there is positives to both!
At some point I plan on doing a video about the era of yellow castle to fright knights and how the lore goes I just want to do the 4 factions I haven’t done yet!
@@BrickingUpBrad No rush at all! I appreciate all the effort that goes into these, and this feels like a good release pace. I'll be glad to see it though!
maybe the dragon masters were once apart off the black knights but didn't like their rules and ideals so they seperated and aided majisto in his quests and became the dragon masters, and an enemy off the black knights
This was my favorite faction as a kid. It was also the last faction to be introduced before Lego went crazy with all of the fantasy stuff. Eventually I plan to build a new Black Knights castle on the scale of the Lion Knight's Castle from last year.
I always found the black knights strange as to why they used dragons as their insignia. I think they should have used a different bird or forest creature that wasn’t a falcon
iamgine if a new CMF castle series was launched and the secret character (kind of like the highwayman was a "secret") was the white plumed knight remade and even came with a horse and new barding! ugh. my wallet just fell out of my pocket thinking about it.
I heard that the Dark Forest sets were an America-only release, and the sets had that ramshackle hodge-podge assembly from whatever bits they had on hand to them. So, maybe that explains those sets. They think we Americans are dumb. But, that doesn't explain the Royal Knights.
Dark forest sold in Europe in some stores. But wasn’t in the magazines over there. Lego was trying something new in Lego castle, With all those factions.
@@BrickingUpBrad Regardless, I had picked up the smallest set, and looking at the collection, small as it was, didn't impress my high-school sensibilities at the time.
Acording to my reaserch the black knights are a brake away faction from the black Falcons after the black falcon leader Sir richerd black or the black Knight died
Dragon Masters helmets and armor are clearly of Asian inspiration. The Lion King knights are clearly a successor to the Crusaders. Also, it echoes History. The Royal Knights are from stabilized Western Royal dominions, after the crusades and colonization of the Middle East (the desertic landscapes of some of the magazine scenes) and came into contact with the Chinese Empire expansion to the West (from the Mongols but with wizards added to it) The Black Knights were the most stylish knights in LEGO verse, their castle was amongst my all time favorite sets with its 13th Century architecture. (note that the Dragon Masters aka, Asians came just after and the Mongol hordes came from the 14th Century on, so that fits with my theory). The earlier medieval collections must have depicted 11th and 12th centuries all right, times of the first crusades, Richard the Lion Heart and Robin Hood...
Bro, it's called heater shield and kite shield, and they were actual designs from middle ages. Heater shields were primarily used by armored knights who didn't need as much protection, they were smaller and lighter, easier to move. Kite shield was mostly used by infantry, it was long enough to protect your foot.
I know there is a real name for them but I was using brick link names so people could find them easier if they wanted to look them up to buy them or something!
Honestly I thought of that for the black knight. I don’t know for sure but there is definitely some things that connect there. One working theory I had was the black knight became the black monarch. But didn’t have a lot of proof to back it up when making this vid!
LEGO bring us back knights in black! :)))) 2 yeras ago in BLDP Polish Lego fan name Sleepless Night created a fantastic project of new Black Knight's Castle. What a shame that Lego didn't go for it :(
Listening to this as I'm going through the perhaps most annoying process, cleaning off the dust off lego pieces 😅 God the black knights castle does look quite ugly and out of place nowadays, especially next to the newly released castle for the 90s anniversary, considered selling it on several occasions.
I could definitely see that. Something like majisto coming to recruit the black knights and a small army of them braking off to join him.
I had to laugh at 2:15 I’m watching this as I’m hanging shelves for legos
This is my lore:
Considering Royal Knights castle looks kinda similar to the Black Knights one - my guess is that Royal Knights had conquered Black Knights.
That’s some great head cannon!
Great castle knowledge video. 👍👍. Love these factions more after watching your video ⚔️⚔️⚔️
Right! After going into these factions and themes as deep as I do I always have a better appreciation for them!
House of the Dragon has added some nice new potential context as to why the Black Knights and Dragon Masters were enemies with the same sigil on their shield, just in different colors.
And frankly I’m still TB all the way. 😁
8:23 Here’s an idea; what if the DragonMasters broke off from the Dragon/Black Knights, starting a civil war
I'm just curious what the names of all the magazine you referenced because I would really love to read them myself
FINALLY! BEEN WAITING FOR EVA
Great video! Loved it… just subscribed
Welcome to the channel!
Hey Brad excellent video but only the reason for the change set number was the piece count 1584 1988 - 132pieces 6066 1989 - 168pieces
Good to know! I legit was looking everywhere but couldn’t find a thing!
Honestly never saw that set in person and didn’t even realize it had one. It blends in so much.
While not my #1 favorite faction, imo they were the strongest and coolest portrayed by LEGO. I always imagined the dragon masters as a breakoff faction of the Black Knights, which is what led to their demise. Still, the Black Knights were iconic and one of my all time top 5 factions
Oh yeah they we’re definitely a very throng faction! Definitely iconic!
I always imagined they allied with the crusaders/royals against the falcons and halfway throught the dragon knights war before turning on them
Personally the Black Knights and Crusaders are the only Lego Castle factions I've ever liked as much as the Wolfpack and Forestmen/Dark Forestmen.
Great job Brad, loved it
Appreciate it!
Great video! Patiently awaiting Dragon Masters 🤤
Soon hopefully soon🤞
Odd that never occurred to you that the lady from the Knight's Challenge could've been The Black Monarch. The stand has the flags of the Black Knights, so it's not a stretch to assume she's part of that faction, not the Crusaders.
I guess that would mean she's dead or has a pet ghost.
Because the princess figure that is used also showed up in other lion knight sets. But never showed up in any black knight sets.
Of course, prior to the '90 helmet visor you mentioned, we had the original '78 Yellow Castle visor.
I had a lot of information for this one😅😂
But I do agree there is positives to both!
At some point I plan on doing a video about the era of yellow castle to fright knights and how the lore goes I just want to do the 4 factions I haven’t done yet!
@@BrickingUpBrad I'll go back and watch again! Thanks!
WOOOOOOOOO
THR DAY HATH COME
I know you have been anticipating this one😂😂 hope I did them justice!
@@BrickingUpBradyou most certainly did!
This was my favorite faction as a kid. It was also the last faction to be introduced before Lego went crazy with all of the fantasy stuff. Eventually I plan to build a new Black Knights castle on the scale of the Lion Knight's Castle from last year.
Cool do you still have the sets?
I've personally always thought the ghost was the Black Monarch as well. I like the idea of a powerful faction led by a revenant king.
Definitely!
I still have that complete black knight castle and knights, I confirm, one of the best Lego castle
That’s awesome!
I always found the black knights strange as to why they used dragons as their insignia. I think they should have used a different bird or forest creature that wasn’t a falcon
YES TAVERN TALK!!!
TAVERN TALK!!!
iamgine if a new CMF castle series was launched and the secret character (kind of like the highwayman was a "secret") was the white plumed knight remade and even came with a horse and new barding! ugh. my wallet just fell out of my pocket thinking about it.
😂😂😂 honestly I would rather them make a new set with that figure but way more detailed
@@BrickingUpBrad you’re right they should just do both ;)
I heard that the Dark Forest sets were an America-only release, and the sets had that ramshackle hodge-podge assembly from whatever bits they had on hand to them.
I think I have more of these than any other knights as I have a castle for them
Do you have the black ravens or in Lego terms the tournament knight flag?
I got white dragon plumes in a knights weapon and armour parts poly bag, around 93
That’s amazing!
Can you do a tavern talk video about 2013 castle theme lore and history video please 😢😢😢.
Its on the list and a very requested on!
The sew-on patch was to be ordered if you were a member of the LEGO-club.
Source: I own 4 of them haha :)
Well that solves that mystery 😂😂
Acording to my reaserch the black knights are a brake away faction from the black Falcons after the black falcon leader Sir richerd black or the black Knight died
where do you find the old lego stopmotions
UA-cam!
@@BrickingUpBrad thanks
Dragon Masters helmets and armor are clearly of Asian inspiration.
The Lion King knights are clearly a successor to the Crusaders.
Also, it echoes History. The Royal Knights are from stabilized Western Royal dominions, after the crusades and colonization of the Middle East (the desertic landscapes of some of the magazine scenes) and came into contact with the Chinese Empire expansion to the West (from the Mongols but with wizards added to it)
The Black Knights were the most stylish knights in LEGO verse, their castle was amongst my all time favorite sets with its 13th Century architecture.
You make amazing videos
Thank you!
Will you ever make a video as to why The Crusaders/Crown Knights/Lion Knights are always up againts the Black Knights/Dragon Knights?
I swapped all the arms to black for my black Knight army
In 2022 many classic factions received an updated logo. including the Black Knights.
I guess Lego is preparing for a reuse.
Any possible to tell evil wizard and his skeleton army in the next episode?
They are on the list but I got some other factions first!
Yesssss
Maybe the Black Knight defected and founded the Black Knights? And the Dragon Masters sre a branch noble house from that descended from Black Knight
Honestly I thought of that for the black knight. I don’t know for sure but there is definitely some things that connect there.
One working theory I had was the black knight became the black monarch. But didn’t have a lot of proof to back it up when making this vid!
The Black Knights and the Dragon Masters, could bes the same faction, but be in a Civil war.
Always a possibility!
🔥🔥👏🏻💕
Thank you!
But it sure is iconic!
oh love it al my favorite is the black nights when i sse this video i love it but i dont have the black knights casle but i am hungaryen and the hungaryen have thet set and the hungaryens dont no how prices this so i buy it thenks al of your videos i love al thenks your hard work
🎉
Lego bring back the green dragons 🐉
True!!!
My sister hade black knights she is older than me i hade the green dragon sets
That’s cool!
Cool does she still have them?
I miss the old TT intro music. Just my opinion.
