Black hakama = black belt Without hakama = white belt You can wear hakama only if you are blackbelt, in some dojos they give them a blue hakama but only if you are an uchidechi "people that study directly with the sensei"
@Merio Carpenter Literally, uchi deshi (内弟子) means "house student", that is that the student not only learns directly from the master, but lives with him and serves him. The meaning of the color of the hakama can vary according to dojo but historically, in budo, it does not have much meaning and people wore all sorts of colors.
@Ximena Velásquez You can read an article I wrote about this topic here: www.guillaumeerard.com/daito-ryu-aiki-jujutsu/articles-daito-ryu-aiki-jujutsu/why-do-yudansha-wear-hakama/
@@guillaumeerard i was going to write "almost slave" uchideshi meaning but it might hurt somebody feelings lol, and yes i was all sort of colors, this uniform comes from daito ryu, i don't know if it is older.
@Merio Carpenter The term "slave" would have been ill chosen. Most of the times, uchi deshi are given food, housing, and sometimes an allowance. Moreover, they are free to leave at any time. Nothing to do with slavery.

Why do some of them wear black pants and others are wearing white?
Black hakama = black belt
Without hakama = white belt

You won’t see Steven Segal doing this. It will be too much for him.
