Its about timing kata block strike at the same time. Ive always thrown people from a punch and there are good effective techniques and I say keep it simple and effective. Doing techniques slightly different can be the difference between ripping out the shoulder joint and not doing this for example. Shomenate strike instead of a punch is so effective and is dangerous. Its seeing a situation like on the street and countering the attack by instinct automatically and thats to me the skill and developing chi energy timing breathing etc can and often does make the difference and aikido needs so much practice and time to be effective but a hard striking art is quicker to learn and maybe effective quickly. Uyeshiba was a small old man who wasnt a strongman but he was unbelieveable. He used to train at night blindfold and would have like a sixth sense as he would feel the attack through the changes in energy around him.also he would not tire in combat with a bokken sword aiki jo with hisperfect breathing and relaxation when he moved. Uyeshibas book and the old films of him are truelly amazing and I do believe he was one of the very last of the true samurai warriors but I understood that maybe people are turning away from aikido because of the mma is fashionable yet in modern aikido the spiritual element with meditation and the classical martial arts studies that uyeshiba did have been largely left out or disregarded and this maybe is a big mistake as its like missing out letters of the alphabet when trying to write. Maybe im wrong but I feel uyeshiba really was that good because he connected in other ways through meditation etc that has been disregarded as unimportant in more recent times because its not physical and you cant see it like the exercises diet breathing to develop massive chi energy. I saw 6 big guys trying to move or bend the arm or lift off the ground my old aikido instructor without managing. Yes you cant see that energy as its not a move but its effective and vital.

Many watching these videos showing slow defence exercises to practise and complain that in a real fight with arms flailing at you none of this would work. That is totally correct. BUT the point is you must practise this until you have fantastic speed with the technique otherwise you will be taken down while carefully folding the arm per the technique! . A top Aikido master has practised every possible attack so many times and thus unlike attacking Marshall arts types which onlt covers some defence moves, be able to defend and if need hurt the attacker every time including multiple attackers which you can see on Steven Segals classes for Black belt he has you survive no rules attack and you need to survive for a period to be successful. It is not easy and many attempting it fail. It is very real.. Generally in any sport, the top guy in his sport will beat the lesser experienced because of wisdom, speed and practised moves plus he has "seen it all" so can counter almost anything. The beauty of Aikido, is if you in a situation where someone is in your face and starts to touch you or even attempt a single strike, you will counter instantly grabbing and twisting the limb and forcing his knees to crumble and hes on the ground and i did this myself and had the option right there to do some ligament damage as i have deep knowledge of the anatomy (extra classes haha) and really hurt him . I ended up asking him while he was pinned "do you believe i can permanently damage your arm at this point? while he was in agony. He kept resisting so i applied more excruciating pressure (which i had done to me in practise so know the pain level) to answer but said ok loudly. i had 2 females with me and i let him up and backed away from him to give room but staying in front of them before he got to his feet and kept my eyes hard bored at him and ready for counter from him but he got up and just stared at me and left without saying anything. If he did this to impress the girls he failed badly and i made sure i didnt "beat him up" just defused the situation which is why i love Aikido so much as dont like idea of hurting people. I started when i was 13 but then left it and came back on and off through the years till fully concentrating on it . i got to about 3/4 way up which is Blue belt for me but also faced some of the "upper" challenges like 3 guys rushing at you punching you while you avoid being brought down. This is extremely difficult to fully control and win every time and Segals foot work and sheer balance and technique is a great study as you see his "real" footage of this attack and hes like grabbing quick silver and sheds all coming at him. Its amazing how some of that practise can make it easier when one crazy idiot tries to grab you, you react instantly and its all over.
