John isn't giving his students competing in Eddie Bravo Invitational credit, Gordon Ryan said on the Joe Rogan podcast that his team didn't know what the fuck to do when it came to overtime, mainly back attack and defense. So John studied Tim Kennedy escaping Roger Gracie because Tim Kennedy kept escaping Rogers back control, and from there they started focusing on back escape attacks and defense. Now they are masters at it.
The great thing about Danaher is being an open minded nerd.

wouldnt John have learnt these traps from Renzo long before ? Gracie Academy taught this _very_ well - i think at least ten years ago.
I think they teach it as same side rather than cross side grabbing. At least in the gracie combatives program

Ryron and Rener ARE NOT RENZO. One academy is in California and focused on self defense. The other has turned out Gordon Ryan and Roger Gracie. I wouldn't compare the two schools although from the same family

When friends asked BJJ vs Judo/ Sambo and wrestling, I say in BJJ we take what works, we don’t care where it comes from we just use it. Wrestling & Judo are a great source to steal from 😇

Most of the things Gordon do these days used to be applied by Marcelo. DDS just have improved setups.

@@FFmaxxx I did. I heard him say “Marcelo did this instinctively”. Which isn’t true at all. I trained with Marcelo back in Florida. He was already calling this the straight jacket and had the exact same system danaher is using in place. Same grip fighting, same arm trap. Everything.
