  • The work begins and we are pleasantly surprised when our septic contractor informs us that he can complete our job ahead of schedule. I mean, when does that ever happen? As owner/builders in the state of Virginia, we are required to use a licensed septic installer, but this should be the only thing with the entire house build that we need to contract out. The rest is on us. We learned a lot watching Marvin in his backhoe and had fun getting dirty with him. This episode shows installation of two thousand-gallon precast septic tanks. The second tank contains a pump which gets powered when the water level reaches about 500 gallons. There is also a high-water alarm on the second tank in case the pump fails. Our leach field is 320 feet away with a 50 foot climb in elevation. It was engineered to be 5 channels, using infiltrator chambers, at 100 feet long each on the 23 degree grade.
