My kids were told that if they defended themselves in a fight, they'd be suspended. I told them not to worry, we'll go out for ice cream. My oldest got suspended for defending a special needs kid against a bully. When he got suspended, I gave him a pat on the back and told him how proud I was of him.

I remember my first real fight, when I was in 3rd grade. I was a smaller kid, I'm only 5'6" now, but I was athletic, pretty strong, and had an older brother and friends who liked to wrestle and stuff, so I was getting good practice and didn't even know it. A neighborhood kid that wasn't part of our group, but still occasionally played with us was playing with me on a street corner one day. Maybe I remember wrong, but the way I do remember it is we just were arguing about normal kid stuff and he stood up pushed my down on the pavement. I scraped myself and started crying and ran home.
So a few hours later, I was eating dinner with my family and to my horror and shock we hear this kid's two older brothers yelling up at our windows, taunting me and saying their brother wanted to fight me! I was scared and embarrassed. My father and mother, younger sister and older brother were there. At this point I should let you know that this was in either 1973 or 1974. Why?
BECAUSE... My dad said, "Hell NO! You're not letting THIS happen!" Our entire family left the dinner table and we went downstairs to our front yard, where the kid, his two older brothers, and at LEAST a DOZEN of the neighborhood kids now were waiting. I don't remember, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were other parents there. So my father says, "You guys are having this out now." I was scared, but I had no way out, and I did feel better knowing that I was ultimately safe, and I knew I was no wimp, just young and afraid of my first fight.
It was mostly a wrestling match with a few punches, but I beat him EASILY. I was SO excited and I ran across the street to my then best friend's house and just BEAMED when I told him I won the fight. LOL, his parents were mostly detached from the rest of the neighborhood so he wasn't allowed to watch the fight. So THEN, as I'm still telling my friend about winning the fight, one of the Bully's friends comes up and says, "Jimmy Fred wants to fight again. He says you got lucky."
LOL, man, I KNEW I hadn't gotten lucky and I chirped, "SURE!" and ran back over and EASILY dispatched him a second time, got up and said, "Wanna fight again?" He said no, and that was the last I heard from Jimmy Fred.

It might work in a case like in the clip where it's a 1:1 bully to victim ratio, but a whole other story when it's two or more bullies on one. I just don't understand it when people say it's a right of passage, totally normal, it builds character. Personally, I know of nobody who ever truly found bullying to be beneficial in any way---it only caused long term emotional scars And Good God, targeting a sight impaired kid. Why do bullies never make it a "fair fight"....? Because they're cowards !

@@msr1116- VERY well said!! Bullying is wrong period!! NOTHING good becomes of bullying!! All it does is perpetuate the cycle of bullying!! It's been proven by hard statistics!

I'm kind of reminded of the French-Canadian film _Léolo_ (1992) where his older brother gets really muscular and trains for months in order to beat up his bully... but he still loses the fight in the end. 😂

I remember getting suspended from school in the 9th grade for getting in a fight in 1987. I thought my mom was going to be mad. I remember her saying “I’m not mad. A kid was messing with you and you kicked his ass!” I didn’t really kick anybody’s ass, but it was cool that my mom assumed I did and had my back.

Without bullies our country’s men turn to what we see now. I told my kids what I was told. If you have to, you fight and do whatever it takes to win. You’ll only ever have to display your ferocity once, more than likely.

Why would a boy bully a much smaller and younger girl? Especially in those days? Had anyone tried that during the time I grew up, that boy would have gotten his ass kicked by every boy his age and older to the point where he would have had to change schools.

In 5th grade the school principal suspended me for a fight that didn't happen anywhere near school. It happened at a small zoo on the other side of town. A boy I knew from school, who was a major jerk to everyone was making fun of my special needs sister so I blacked his eye. That Monday I had a note waiting for me when I showed up in class. I was suspended and not only that, the principal threatened to call the cops if I "assaulted" any more students. Turned out the kid was his grandson.

    Peter's the best.
Of course these days, most people are total Karens and run straight to the police who along with DAs that have nothing better to do apparently will run the person through their meat grinder causing FAR more pain and trouble than a black eye.
