  • I had the priviledge to discuss Training in Jeet Kune Do as a seminar student with my Sifu, Ron Balicki. We touched on how to train, how students improve, and trapping application.

      @@evanmurphy4632 there is an example in the video you touch/trap then strike making them react. Reaction is always slower than action so trying to trap when being punched at is a loosing battle. At least that's how I always used it. You can reacting trap if you can make someone strike way out of range, but within boxing range it's a speed game. Does that make sense?

    Great video! Ron is spot on; simplified hand trapping does work. Many high-level boxers, kickboxers and MMA fighters are/were known to use it successfully, including Rob Kaman, Anderson Silva, Kamaru Usman, Lomachenko and George Kambosos. The top boxing prospect Efe Ajagba also recently employed trapping in his knockout victory over Brian Howard. He used a straight one-two hand immobilization combination to end the fight.

    I met Ron years ago along with Diana in Mexico City, that thing he said about looking to someone (me) doing something kind of different ("doing there own JKD" (i hope...) is exactly what happened. He shared his ideas, and let creativity flow with great attitude, it was a great experience. Good video!!

    I m from PFS JKD and I totally agree with your opinion.
    BTW trapping is just hard to make it work if you have lack of drilling practice
    also in order to make trapping work you need to spur a lot to learn timing I think.
    Moreover It's very important to have your grappling & BJJ skills for your plan B,
    which is when your trapping didn't work and become clinching.
    People should just go to train their skill instead of talk shit about others.😂

      Yeah more of a guiding idea towards fighting, take what's useful from everything. It was meant to evolve, but since Bruce Lee died so young his teachings became dogma for his wanting students. They completely missed the point. JKD is a philosophy towards fighting to forever learn martial arts and to accept what is useful. Bruce Lee never understood rigid beliefs and unwillingness of the older teachers to accept new ways. So anyone's JKD can be completely different. I feel these dojos/gyms that have become very accepting of cross training are what Bruce Lee intended for all along. Just learn and spread knowledge of martial arts.

    I find it funny that the Gedan Barai is so widely known as a block. I'm not a karateka myself, but I see this as pretty obvious given that its name means "thigh sweep", it's not supposed to be a low block. In judo there's a technique called sukui name, which I think is very similar to the actual application of the Gedan Barai, difference being that sukui nage involves picking up the opponent's ankle whereas Gedan Barai is a simple sweep, just like Ashi Barai (foot sweep) is.
    It doesn't mean, however, that you can't use this movement as a block. If it works, it works.

    I hate how so many jdk practitioners are so attached to the bruce lee idea that the don't realize that bruce lee would be super disappointed if he came back to life to see that his martial art has failed to grow, change or adapt. The whole point of jkd was to change and adapt wing chun...keep that tradition

    • @davidrempel4862
      @davidrempel4862 2 роки тому +3

      Agreed. I've always said, that if Bruce were alive today, his version of JKD would be very different from the one he had when he passed away anyways. The man was always learning new things and incorporating them into his personal style. The essence of JKD. So why get so bogged down by trying to emulate the style of a man who died when he was in his early 30s and had only just started to become what he was going to be, especially when he flat out says "Don't do that!" (and don't get me wrong, he accomplished a helluva lot for such a young man, just imagine where he'd be today at around....what...80 or so?)
      You can learn from his teachings, just like you can learn from any instructor's/masters/professor's teachings, but you shouldn't be restricted by them. You can and should experiment and go your own way. Pull from as many sources as you can get access too. Make your OWN personal style, not Jun Fan JKD (although if you have no experience, then doing JF JKD can be a good place to start....just don't get locked into it as "the way")

    Lets not pretend ...JKD isn't really a martial art, it's a martial arts discussion group. 80% of the practice is talking martial arts interspersed with bruce lee quotes and historical fandom. there is more JKD done in the comments section of youtube channels rather than in a cage, ring, mat or the most hallowed ground "the street". As it is I'm doing lots of JKD here in the comments section like this video and it seems to appeal to people who want martial arts to be a university subject with lectures, seminars, conferences and dissertations.
    And remember "absorb what is useful, discard what is not". Dr Sifu Mike JKD Ma BBMa BSc MA Phil
