- Born Cecelia Veronica Peniston in Dayton, Ohio, CeCe, as she would be more commonly referred to, spent the majority of her formative years in Phoenix, Arizona. A self-described “military brat”, she got her first start singing before her congregation in church. She also performed in plays, musicals, karaoke contests and talent shows while learning to play the piano. By the age of 11, CeCe knew singing was what she wanted to do for a living and that one day, she would see her name in lights. After graduating from high school, she did continue her education, for a short while, at a community college studying liberal arts. While there, she got involved in beauty pageants, winning Miss Black Arizona in 1989 and Miss Galaxy the following year. These years would also serve as a springboard for CeCe to develop her skills in writing lyrics.

It’s great to see how Cece Peniston’s legacy is still being praised in this generation with Kelly Rowland interpolating Finally on a song call Finally (Cannot Hide it) from an ep made by the all around talent of Amorphous 🙏🏿.
That high-falsetto inverted vamp at the end of "Keep On Walkin" is the stuff of legends. Her vocal range was incredible. Glad she's still performing. 💗

Absolutely but she fell into this category that she couldn’t really get out of…. She definitely tried in the mid 90s with hit by your love…. The vibe tone beat and video were decidedly more on the r&b and black listener vibe… heavy Rotation on BET but missed the mark on radio…. Which you really needed back then…

I live in Australia and was in my late teens listening to this genre of music.
"Finally" was a HUGE hit here, I'm so surprised that I haven't heard of her second hit. (or her 3rd, Keep on Walkin')
Her dance moves in "Keep on Walkin'" remind me of Shanice (who was popular in the same period).
Here in the UK "Finally" was obviously a huge hit and "We got a love thang" was a hit too but I don't remember any of her others after that being too big over here
Finally is still a great track, still makes me smile like it did when I was 10 and it was in the charts. I'm In The Mood, Keep Giving Me Your Love and plenty of others are great too. She balanced R&B and dance quite well.

I love her first album! Crazy Love was one of my personal faves. I feel it did not get enough attention as Finally, Keep On Walkin' and We Got A Love Thang. Glad she found a new stride with her art after all that drama she went through.

Saw CeCe in 1994 when Sinbad used to do his comedy and have bands do shows in various Carribean islands back in the day for HBO, She sang all her hits and girl can Sing!!!
When I lived in AZ, I would run into her from time to time. She's cool. I think Bey should have put her on the Renaissance album. IMO I think cause Cece wasn't willing to sel her soul, the record company shut her down. She never left AZ and she stayed to herself.

I met CeCe, her mother and brother in 2016. They are nice people.
It’s wild when you think about it. Her and Mary J. Blige literally debuted months apart. Finally charted higher on the Hot 100 at 5 while Real Love got to 7. I think during this time, you can literally see house music start to die off and the sound Blige and Jodeci ushered in with hip hop soul/ new Jack swing was coming in. And while that sound has dominated, it’s nice to see dance music has started to come back into vogue (ha. Funny, Mary J did a dance album in 2014 and got a Grammy nod for a dance song) so it would be nice to see her come back

Baaaabbbby, when I got her tape lol yes I said tape lol. I played that thing till it popped. But thats okay I pulled out the pencil, tape, screwdriver and patience lol. I realized then I should always dub the tapes I played a lot. Man, I LOVED this kinda music e.g. Robin S, Various House Mix Tapes, C + C Music Factoy...the list goes on. I was excited when I saw her at DC Capitol Pride one year. Her voice is still stellar...man, totally unsung 🌟

I love me some Cece Peniston. She's beautiful and talented.
However, I honestly think since everything was moving so fast with her and her career that even the direction she chose for each album kind of dimmed her album sales.
Her first album, "Finally" was a massive success that was mainly dance with some r&b and pop. After that she wanted to be more serious so her second album, "Thought Ya Knew" was a moderate success with dance, r&b with a hip hop style to it which was a nice album, too.
Her third album, "I'm Movin On" to me is what ended things. Although, Cece Peniston has a beautiful voice on the album, the album in whole needed a better direction and proper help. To me that albums was mismanaged, barely promoted properly, and it was pulling Cece more towards r&b love ballads while distancing away from her dance genre and fan base which what made her popular in the first place.
The self-titled slbum, "I'm Movin On" was a good song, but most of the songs on that album just seemed like a collection of album fillers on a unfinished project.
So, many changes I would've suggested on that third album. Instead of a barely known rapper Pusha T rapping on "I'm Movin On" it would've been more fitting if MC Lyte or Queen Latifah was rapping instead.
The R&B / love ballads on that song should've had more a current sound. Babyface, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis should've helped wrote the r&b / love ballads songs for her.
Honestly, even now on that album instead of covering the song "Somebody Else's Guy" I strongly think instead she should've covered Evelyn "Champagne" King's song, "Love Come Down". Slightly update the beat and instrumentals on that song it would've been great for Cece cause if you listen to Evelyn's voice on the original song you'll notice that Cece's voice would've been perfect for that song.
But, still Cece Peniston made a success of giving dance music with a great pop and R&B feel to it.
