Just watched this. Best dad ever. What great boys! God Bless you and your family and may the memories of your trip stay with you forever. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring others through your journey!
I am on awe just way going your video…. I am in love with you guys… You guys are awesome… you guys are the best… dad especially you.. you are the best… vieses is so good it feels like I am right there with you guys… Dad you are a good guy… you are the best… no easy task.. you are amazing…. Mom??? I am sure you were praying for your man and boys…. Every second of each day… Thank you for sharing this video… You have inspired me to do this with my boys and grand kids … Thank you
Such a great video, I have been watching loads of videos of people doing massive hikes but not seen one with kids yet so I was pleased when I found yours as I want to be able to do long hikes and camps with my girls just like you did, it's now given me confidence we can do it. We are in the UK though so we may have more wet days 🤣
Nothing like camping with your boys. I have a daughter also and she always came on camping trips with us. Memories for a lifetime. My kids are all grown now but we still talk about those camping trips.
My parents taught me to pray. Our heavenly father thou art in heaven... etc They didn't do it with me. They don't even remember teaching me when I brought it up so many years later. Nowadays I put on a music show for God every day and it is amazing :)
Looking back at this again. There is not a more inspiring video on UA-cam than this. The greatest adventure. All these folks and their JMT videos, but only one is carting their 10 and 12 year olds along the way. I have done this trail, and I know how challenging it can be for anyone. I love and honor this dad. I tried so hard to do the same thing with my family; best thing in my life was raise my 6 kids in the mountains. But I never did anything quite as great as this.
You are the first person in 4 months to comment on this vid. Thank you for that. Now, almost 4 years removed, I can’t think of a month that was more important than this. We’ve been so busy ever since. I’ve tried to fit it in. 2018 summer didn’t work. 2019 summer was too tough. Got 4 kids. 15, 13, 12, and 10. Life gets us all tangled up. But I’m about ready to cut the chord and take them all. All 6 of us. There is something to be said about being free in this day and age. Thanks for the comment.
I have loved every second of this film, the best John Muir Trail video I have watched. The boys were absolutely amazing. I felt proud of them at the end! Thank you!
I almost cried towards the end. What an awesome adventure you had with your sons. Its refreshing to see the trust you placed in them by not hovering and by letting them explore. It says so much about you.I wish I could see this more, our society seems to put so many boundaries on kids now in days.
I'm speechless anyone who has hiked knows what an amazing accomplishment it is. Thanks for sharing this video. You and your sons have created a life long connection with this trip . I lost my Dad two years ago and sadly I feel we never knew each other.
I just wanted to thank you for letting us in on your trip with your boys. I have an almost 8 year old that I'm hoping to take on the JMT in 2019. While most of the videos on UA-cam are all adults, this gave my son a view of some kids his own age. Thanks again.
This was a great video, brings back many memories. I took my 14 and 11 year old sons on a thru-hike of the JMT in 2012, starting at Happy Isles. We took 21 days, 3 of those were rest days. They still talk about it frequently and we all want to do it again. Don't worry, your kids won't ever forget that experience.
As an avid backpacker and expecting Father, I cannot wait to do stuff like this with my Son. Your boys will never forget this, and the confidence and self-reliance will be important life lessons. Good job!
I watched this from start to end. I loved it so much. Video didn't just show spectacular landscape but also showed the journey of you, your sons and character development. Inspired.
I just finished watching your EPIC JMT journey with your boys! WOW!! What an accomplishment! My son turns 12 this month and we both love to hike! You and your boys have inspired me to plan this trek with him. Thank you for sharing Robert. God bless you and your family!
I am doing the JMT from Horseshoe Meadows starting August 6th. If you are gdoing SOBO we should pass each other. I really enjoyed this video and was very impressed with you as a parent
What an awesome adventure with your boys! I liked that the camera was passed around, so everyone could share their perspective, and I really appreciated your sharing trail updates from the heart. From your spontaneity in taking taking a zero to get a boat ride, letting the boys find their own way across the streams, praying with them, and letting them hike their own hike are a testament to what a great dad you are. Thanks for sharing your epic adventure and for putting in the extra time to edit all that footage!
Robert: I'm 61, I would hope if I had been blessed with kids in my life that I would have been as good a Dad as you. Your boys are real commandos, mature and great common sense, yet as goofy as 10/12 year old boys should be... stronger than mountain goats! I know they appreciate the trip, but they will not come to understand the importance of the adventure until they are 25 or 30, well into their own lives. You and your wife are clearly outstanding parents, and there is no job in life more important than that.
Glad to see others follow our footsteps from about a decade ago. back then, a lot of folks kept bugging me on the trail with stuff like "should report you to child services.." although for the most part hikers were thrilled to see some young folks up on the high passes. We kept going back, so for us it wasn't a trip of a lifetime. By age 12 my twins had 3 JMTs under their belt and by today my son (now 19) has been up there 6 times and knows more about the trail and area than some "old timers" These summers in the Sierra were life changing for them - opened up huge amounts of self confidence and the belief that they can do things most others will dismiss as impossible.
I think your trip with your sons was awesome and they will never forget it. You keep it real during the entire video and I for one appreciate that....great video.
Im still watching your journey.. Your kids are amazing. They dont complain, they are studs.. Your film is just the best filming of a Dad and his boys.. Congrats to you and wife for having the belief, and preperation on getting this journey from its first thought to the experience of the journey.. so darn cool.. good job boys.. your amazing.. you too dad!
Robert, you have every right to be so proud of your boys and yourself, thanks for sharing your trip with all of us! I'd bet you probably inspired at least one future generation (your grandkids) of hikers by taking your sons on this trip. Congratulations on a hike well done! You're a great Dad!!
Man I just want to say that you rule. What a great trip and video you let us see. I have two boys 10 and 13 and we just started hiking this summer. Because of this video I will be hiking this trail next year with them. Your kids will remember this all their lives. I can't wait to do this with my boys. Thank you!
What great memories you guys have. What a blessing to have son's that will enjoy it all with you. My son says that the best trips he had, were when we were backpacking together. Thanks for the video!
Hey guys you rock. I love it when dads do special things with their kids but to do the JMT with these two young men is simply amazing. You have every right to be proud of your sons. Praise God is right! Great job.
I just came back from a 4-day backpacking trip with my nephews and it was amazing. I love how they found their love and absolute respect for nature. I can't wait to have kids on my own and take them out to the wilderness so they can experience all of this and more. Amazing video and an amazing dad.
Let me start off by saying what a great job editing and producing this video! Simplicity is the secret! Now to the amazing message you are sending whether you know it or not. This video contains the equation for true happiness. Hard work + Determination + Dedication + Love + Family + Nature + Perseverance = True Happiness. I'm not a math major but I think that's correct. This video is such an inspiration. It's great to see you trusting in your kids and showing them the true value of life. It's amazing what happens when you are outdoors for just a weekend, I can't imagine what it is like being out there for 23 or so days. You have a beautiful family and I wish you all the best. We just had our first son and he will be turning one this March. I can't wait until he is at an age where I can show him this video and see if it's something he is into or not. I asked my wife if she was interested and she just said....."I'll just stay in the hotels and resupply you guys" Robert, again, thank you for documenting your journey and letting us all come along with you and your badass boys! Cheers my friend!
This is by far one of my favorite JMT vids I've seen. Watched it all and it did a better job of giving me a flavor of the trail without constant music or glitzy editing (although the background music was nice at times). Well done guys! I want to do this trip sometime and it was awesome to see the trail from your perspective.
You have some amazing young boys sir. I watched the whole thing and it was obvious you are a great parent. I loved the end when your wife was SO proud of seeing what her sons accomplished. I'm sure they will do the trail again one day as adults and with their own sons. Hats off to you and your boys!
My wife is an amazing woman. She also happens to be super hot!! haha.. We have 4 kids, and if it weren't for her I wouldn't have been able to do any of this. In fact, if it weren't for her, I wouldn't be who I am today. She is literally the best. Thanks for the comment.
Awesome Video!! Loved watching it. My 13 year boy and I started the same day you did from Glacier Point. Unfortunately we had to stop at Tuolomme Meadows because at the time I thought I was getting attitude sickness. Little did I know that what I was felling was normal and if I had just kept going, it would have gotten better. Everyday I have regretted stopping and just received my permit to start again this summer at Lyell Canyon. Loved watching you and your boys reach your goal.
Dana Rogers Dana, I am the man you see here (minus quite a few kind edits). This is my favorite part of life so far. This world wasn’t made for me. Constant contact... Always reacting and never acting. This trip freed my spirit in ways I cannot describe to you in written words. I’m not that good. I guess what I’m saying is... you’ll never get more until you give it all. Sounds super existential, I know. It’s not. It’s true. You’ll never know until you go. Somewhere. Some place. Some time. It doesn’t bless your heart. It heals it. I hope you find a spot similar to mine. Quiet space that stays quiet no matter how loud you want to be. It’s magic. Go. Go. Go. Go. Or don’t.
Thoroughly enjoyed the entire trip with you guys. Kudos to the boys, I am sure this is something they will remember the rest of their lives. And, someday take their kids!
What a great trip, I’m 60 and did it solo when I was 18, what an undertaking you took on, and it will be a trip of a lifetime. Your boys will learn so many life lessons from this. You are a great Dad to take them on this adventure. Beers and safe travels to you guys!
Man, one of the greatest things I ever saw. Hats off. I raised my kids in the mountains (but not this epic quite)--it has so impacted them, and they are doing great things now. Your boys are dynamo and will continue to be something special for the rest of their lives, thanks in large part to a dad like you.
I'm glad you put this video up. I have twin 9 year old boys and found this while researching the trail and planning a trip when they are a little older. I'll be showing them the video to help inspire them,
Wow !!!!!!! That was fantastic to see your trip !!!!!! Those boys did a great job !!! I dream of being on part of the trail a long time ago. I am 73 and have good memories of my wife and me spending 23 days on the trail. We did Whitney and on to near Pinchot Pass when we were stopped by a snow storm. We had to bail to go to a wedding in Indianapolis. I was pleased to hear the prayer !!!
I put this on my tv in the living room and was going to just have it on while relaxing and sifting through my camping gear as I prepare for some upcoming trips. But I ended up watching every minute. So glad I found this and am so happy for you and your boys. This will definitely have an impact on all of you. God bless you and your family. Hike on!
Great video. I did the JMT a couple of years ago and missed my young son the entire time. Since then I have been dreaming about taking him on it when he is ten. Thanks for the inspiration. Great job!
Wow, that was the best jmt video by far. You are an incredible Dad and your kids are amazing. It so cool that that you pray each morning before hiking.
Ok, so I just finished watching the entire thing...AMAZING!!! You carried all that weight the whole way. What amazing kids you have. Kudos dad. Well done!
Thank you so much for sharing your JMT experience! The trail looks like pure magic and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Congratulations to you and your boys for achieving such an amazing feat!!
Amazing experience...you are giving your boys an experience that not only will enrich their lives but will never forget... we love hiking with our kids too, just wish we lived in another area where backcountry was near. Where I live there's a few mountains but nothing like that. I hope to go to Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and even British Columbia one day, God willing!
I looked back at this again tonight. I think this is the greatest, most inspirational video I have seen on UA-cam. This are amazing young men, with the greatest dad. Based on this, I'm now planning to take some of my grandkids on the JMT in a couple of years (I have 12)--section hiking it myself yearly now. Brings back to me memories of raising my 6 kids in the mountains, but we never did anything this long. Wonderful.
My hats off to you Dad... and boys. You guys kicked ass. Thanks for sharing this... The only negative thing I have to say, why can't people watching give this video a thumbs up.
Absolutely amazing!!! What a fantastic accomplishment!!! You and your sons rock - thank you for sharing this wonderful experience with us it is really inspiring!
what incredible memories you made with your boys. ive taken my eldest up to finger lake in the eastern sierra since he was 6 and it has been some of my favorite times with him. you are the boss for carrying what must have been a huge pack to keep them happy. thats a good dad there lads!
why would you think anyone would want to watch an hour and a half long video of you and your boys hiking.... Watched it all congrats awesome video thanks for sharing!!! lol
Haha. I had 7+ hours of footage, and over 500 photos. Getting it down to an hour and a half was difficult. I eventually just decided that it was for our memories. It is obviously not a video made for view count. :)
I've watched a lot of JMT vids. This was the best because it's a father and sons. Epic for you to do that with those boys. You'll have it forever. And so will they. Loved at Guitar Lake; I think you did 17 or 18 miles that day and there were the boys, trail tested, setting up the tent. It's a great thing you've done for them, and for you. At first I thought you had no idea what you were doing, and maybe you didn't, but you just cruised on into it. My son is 26 and we were not able to do that when he was young, but it's on my list. Any time is the right time.
Wow, had me in tears by the end. Outstanding journey, video, and family!!! Thankyou for sharing and inspiring me! I don’t know you but I love you all. Wow your kids not only stepped up, they ran ahead! I can only imagine the gifts they received from taking this challenge on! What a great gift for a father to give to his kids.
Just stumbled across your Excellent Adventure! I have been planning and dreaming of going on the JMT since 2014. Now that I have children, you have inspired me to be patient and take mine when they are old enough! JMT 2031 here we come!!!
Bravo guys! I'm very, very impressed. I'm glad to see that your children are involved in nature. This trip must have made responsible and good men out of them. Be proud!
Congrats to you for what you have done with your boys! Thats a priceless memory they will never forget! Im sure that some day they will do the same trail with their kids! Great video, a real pleasure to watch!
Great video, thanks for taking us along. I’m taking my daughter out next weekend for her first night backpacking. Hope she has as much fun as your boys had. ATB, Sam
Your adventure moved me to tears. When I first started watching the video, I thought you and your absolutely amazing sons were going out for a couple of nights and your wife would be picking you up at Tuolumne meadows. A complete JMT hike is an arduous accomplishment for a fit adult much less two adolescent boys. It was heartwarming to to see the support and love that flowed between a father and two sons as your journey progressed. Congratulations to the three of you and best wishes for a long and happy life filled with many happy outdoor adventures.
roberttichich thank you so much for this message. Needed to hear it while in quarantine with my wife and 4 kids. We’ve at least been able to get out and hike a bunch. Hope you and yours are well.
I’m so glad I came across your video. You are such a great dad! Letting your kids explore, fall and come back up is just amazing! I was holding my tears when the video was ending, but couldn’t after seeing your wife’s reaction on just how proud she was of your boys, and you, of course. Your family, especially your kids, are inspiring! Congratulations on finishing the JMT and many thanks for sharing your experience. Now I have this to remember and keep me going when I do the JMT.😊
Great job guys! I did the whole JMT southbound with my two boys, roughly the same age as yours, in 2012. It was the trip of a lifetime.
Just watched this. Best dad ever. What great boys! God Bless you and your family and may the memories of your trip stay with you forever. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring others through your journey!
Outstanding! Great job to all of you!
" I'm so proud of you" (wife) = You brought them back alive : )
Awesome is as awesome does ! Dad of the Year Award !!!!
kudos to the wife that lets her husband do a trip like this with the kids....those boys will never forget it
I am on awe just way going your video…. I am in love with you guys…

Wonderful video - your kids will have such fond memories of their cool dad.
I'm so glad to see a father who prays with his children at the start of the day...a man who leads by example.
My parents taught me to pray. Our heavenly father thou art in heaven... etc
They didn't do it with me. They don't even remember teaching me when I brought it up so many years later.
Nowadays I put on a music show for God every day and it is amazing :)
That’s awesome! Prayer is very important!
Love this. So fun to watch 🤭💪🏻
This is one of the raddest videos I've seen! This embodies "The Great Outdoors". Memories to last a lifetime

beyond impressed with the two young men you are raising.

I’m 14 and going on this trip with my dad next summer and this video made me really excited for it
You will have a blast. This summer or next? We are doing it again in July 2019.
We are doing it in July tooo
I may see you there
Hit me up when you guys get your permits. I’m planning on bringing my 13 and 10 year old boys. The older one has football and can’t make it.
I am doing the JMT from Horseshoe Meadows starting August 6th. If you are gdoing SOBO we should pass each other. I really enjoyed this video and was very impressed with you as a parent

Awesome. Great Dad. Great Kids. Great Wife for letting him take the boys on a trip they will never forget.
"I'm faster than dad!!" .... "and here is dad, he is dying with his 69 pound bag."
PRICELESS!
Just watched 14 Minutes and already love it! Thank you.

I rember a lesser, but similar experience that inspired me to later take on the AT.....and hike VA and MD..... Bravo! You are a good Dad..
Found this today killed myself laughing when one of your boys went into the river but loved the encouragement you gave them both to figure it out.
You have some amazing young boys sir. I watched the whole thing and it was obvious you are a great parent. I loved the end when your wife was SO proud of seeing what her sons accomplished. One of the most heart warming JMT videos that I have seen yet. Thanks for sharing it.
What a great trip, I’m 60 and did it solo when I was 18, what an undertaking you took on, and it will be a trip of a lifetime. Your boys will learn so many life lessons from this. You are a great Dad to take them on this adventure. Beers and safe travels to you guys!
'The mountains are calling and I must go" John Muir - What an incredible Journey, the Gift of a Lifetime!
Sol. Very. Awesome. Thanks for sharing this with the world! I've been showing it to my boys (8 & 6), and we all agree, you guys are awesome.
Wow. I love seeing parents hiking with their kids... Wish to do this kind of adventure with my kids too...
Wonderful, wonderful adventure! Thank you for sharing. Great Dad - Great kids. You will all treasure the memories.
Great vid, good dad, great boys, they are you and more
Man, one of the greatest things I ever saw. Hats off. I raised my kids in the mountains (but not this epic quite)--it has so impacted them, and they are doing great things now. Your boys are dynamo and will continue to be something special for the rest of their lives, thanks in large part to a dad like you.
Loved the video. One of my favorite JMT videos. You need to do another trip like this. It would be great to see more content like this.
I'm glad you put this video up. I have twin 9 year old boys and found this while researching the trail and planning a trip when they are a little older. I'll be showing them the video to help inspire them,
what an awesome memory!! I still remember that first backpacking trip with dad!
Hike on!
Great video and done well. So cool to see a godly father and sons doing this trek. What a refreshing adventure with you!!
Amazing!!! You and your boys are an inspiration. Thank you for sharing!
Superb! Love this for tons of reasons. This is truly great to have. Your boys and you will cherish it always!
Love you guys praying. What a great family. You are blessed.
Wonderful.
Carl Sullivan thank you very much. They are amazing young men.
My son and I love to watch this video together. Thanks for posting it:)
Awesome!! Love to see the kids out there. Those kids have pretty great rock skipping skills! Great job Dad!!!
Thank you for sharing. Don't know why I'm crying thank you!
I cried at the end. Such a great video. Better than any Tv 📺 show
Greetings from Australia! This was sensational - thank you so much for sharing your journey!
why would you think anyone would want to watch an hour and a half long video of you and your boys hiking.... Watched it all congrats awesome video thanks for sharing!!! lol
Haha. I had 7+ hours of footage, and over 500 photos. Getting it down to an hour and a half was difficult. I eventually just decided that it was for our memories. It is obviously not a video made for view count. :)
Years from now, all 3 of you will look back at this trip as some of the happiest moments of your life. Well done Brock, Dane, and Chubby Beaver!
Be proud!
Love your honesty & candidness what amazing memories for you and the boys The views are breathtaking
Awesome adventure! I'd love to bring my two girls on this trail. You three are an inspiration to all. Thanks for the share.
My kids are still young but I have a screenshot of you and your boys on my vision board to remind myself to do a trip like this in about 10 years.
Watched it all the way through, thanks for taking us along the trail. Hoping to do this summer 2019 myself as well.
ATB, Sam
Amazing and cool on many levels. Such great memories for a lifetime. Thanks for putting this together.
Way to go dad! And your boys killed it!!!!!!! Great watch!
