James Garner is probably the last great western star to ride into the wild blue yonder. This makes me cry... I can't imagine what his life must have been like. Coming from a young man that grew up on old westerns, hearing of his passing gives me great pause. He was one of my fathers favorite actors, and a constant in my life, as my mother watched him grow up, as she did, as I did... He brought up a generation of anxious youngsters in the late 50's and 60's, and on into the 70's he aged with them into adulthood. There were few surprises with a man of his caliber. He held loose women tightly and shy'd away from the booze on screen, settling himself into the preferred role of "Rockford," a Private Eye before Tom Selleck; a Perry Mason in Stetson Boots. He came up from the underhanded ages of the 30's, where anything went and usually did. An enigmatic man, that wondered the streets of Hollywood as if the buildings weren't there. The last of a breed long gone. The ever matured leading man. He had been there when The Duke hadn't yet ridden off; When The Beatles were a fresh, and when Elvis was at the top of the game. A game it seemed that James Garner mastered, well, and often. He wouldn't surpass his fellow riders, but ride with them, Off into the sunset. We'll miss ya Jim! James Garner interview on Charlie Rose - Part 1
The fact he had no problem with Mel Gibson playing the role he made famous shows the kind of guy he is..........RIP to a great actor and an even greater person :)
The Rockford Files was a great show. They simply don’t have that kind of talent anymore. The acting, writing, and direction hands down beats anything from TV today. It’s all liberal activism, smut, and violence.
I think James Garner is a very smart intelligent, funny, sweet, caring , wonderful, family man! James really knows what he is doing!! He is the best actor !!!!!!!!!! I wish the other actor's wold be like him!!! He is a true blue family man! James is a wonderful guy! He loves his wife, children! They always come first! God Bless James Garner!!! We love you so much! And that's my opinion!!!!
I was more exposed to Eastwood as a kid but the few times i saw Garner, something about him resonated in me. He stole the show. The Great Escape, Skin Game, Victor Victoria, Maverick & Rockford to name a few. Miss him a lot. RIP Jim.
Along with Johnny Carson and Danny Kaye, these were my favorite TV and entertainment personalities. they are all gone now. glad I can sometimes watch them on the utube. James Garner was very authentic. created two unforgettable characters on TV.
Great actor, he looks someone who I would like to have beer with, loved his easy going persona and with paired up Doris Day great film making, RIP Jimmy
Lol..who knew you would be sharing with the world these vhs recordings ...ahhh. So happy you shared. Worth watching. James Garner, God Bless you. You were a great fellow. Need more actors such as you. A decent and moral man.. Tom would have LOVED UA-cam. He would have been great
Man, you could just imagine those two wonderful guys having a beer in a bar ,chewing the fat ,roaring with laughter at their tales of yonder ! Relaxed ,chilled and enjoying the craic ! Doesn't get any better than that .
It was refreshing to see Tom be so patient with the callers. Nobody got rushed off. James Garner is about the actor I genuinely felt sad when he died. Great guy. I can't watch 'The Note Book' because of his last scene.
I was a kid watching Jim Garner in “The Rockford Files” at my daddy’s knee, and I always loved him. Listening to him in this interview when he was much older, his basic humility and honesty, tempered with grit and self-assurance, reminds me a lot of Harry Truman. I miss guys like this.
The Peacock streaming service, which just dropped into my Comcast subscription--has The Rockford Files, all of the seasons, in it. Have begun rewatching it, and wow, it holds up well. Enjoy it again if you have access,
Marilyn E. Jess If you have Amazon Prime, you can also currently stream Rockford Files, Columbo, and other great shows for free through their IMDb channel.
I think James Garner cringed on the inside when he had to do these talk shows. He handled it with class though. He will always be Rockford to me...Bye Jimbo. Hope you rest in peace.
Tom Floor Yeah, as much of a natural as he was on camera, he was painfully shy off camera, which is why he always seemed uncomfortable on these......such a dichotomy
In the mid 70s I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Garner at a Hollyweird event that I had no business attending, but I was invited, so I went. I spent 10 or so minutes talking to him & he was just as nice as he comes across on TV or in his movies. Why he spent even 30 seconds talking to a "Green As A Gourd" Georgia Farm Boy/Horse Trainer like me, I'll never know, but I'll always be grateful for his kindness. I was 6' and have no idea how tall Mr. Garner was, but he seemed like a Giant to me.
Just read the comments to this video to find out what kind of man Mr. Garner was. This was one of the true old giants of Hollywood. He was a true professional and a real gentleman. Just watch any of his projects...you can bet it will be a class experience.
"I wish somebody would have told me not to have dubbed and redubbed all of my vhs tapes just in case I would be sharing them with a zillion people." When DVDs became popular, I'm glad I didn't redub my VHS tapes to DVD and then get rid of the VHS tapes. The quality of a well recorded, high resolution VHS tape is just as good as a high quality, standard definition DVD. There's no advantage in converting VHS to DVD, unless of course you hate the hassle of fast forward and rewind.
Excellent interview. James seems very relaxed and comfortable with Tom. This makes it a much better interview, then some others. Jim is very likable here, on at least one interview I saw, he was somewhat hard or testy. Thanks for posting this.
Love just about everything Jim did, from Maverick, The Americanization of Emily, to Nichols, and Victor Victoria, and beyond, but I gotta say, it was The Rockford Files that won and still holds my heart. I still like to think Jim's living in that trailer of his in the parking lot of Paradise Cove, ordering a taco or two at the concession stand by the beach, and he's wrestling w/a case that Becker's not being all that helpful with and Angel's making things even worse than it was when he looked into the case to begin with. Just an unforgettable fictional world that never got stale throughout the life of its original run. Dude must be heavy into another case 'cause he still hasn't returned any of the calls I left on his answering machine, but I'm hopeful, at some point, he will. In the meantime, where am I gonna find a P.I. who'll only charge me $200 a day plus expenses?
When Jim Garner hits Indy for the 500 he gets "the best fried chicken in the world" at a place called the Iron Skillet. Then he hits the Country Kitchen for breakfast. I don't think JG is very prententious if these are the "great places" they have in Indy to eat at that he likes. Next May I'll be hanaging out at the closest Iron Skillet to the Speedway in hopes of seeing the man. A great actor and a great race fan. Not a bad driver either.
Have to disagree with Mr. Garner. Jack Kelly was a great Maverick, but Jim "OWNED it" big time. No one else coulda played "Rockfish", as "Gandi" played by Issac Hayes called him! :-)
*Tom Snyder was the ultimate conversationalist interviewer. An irreplaceable legend of broadcasting.*
I so miss Tom Snyder, listen to him in Philadelphia, then I was able to see him on TV, just loved him. The colortini as it flies threw the air.
James Garner and Rockford are my favorites. God bless all from Patrick

"Right is right", great quote.
The Golden Rule and a handshake still means something. What a man, a real Gentleman !!!
These two men were among those actors and actresses who made television worth watching.

The fact he had no problem with Mel Gibson playing the role he made famous shows the kind of guy he is..........RIP to a great actor and an even greater person :)

Love both of these guys.
I can't say it any better than Tom Snyder said it; one of the good guys.
In the mid 70s I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Garner at a Hollyweird event that I had no business attending, but I was invited, so I went. Mr garner drinks Budweiser.
Tom Snyder at his absolute best.
he and mel gibson were great together !
I loved "The Tomorrow Show" - I know that this isn't it, but I would really love to see those old issues.
I miss you tom
I CERTAINLY WISH I'D HAVE BEEN NEAR GARNER'S SET IN THOSE DAYS . PWW
Love just about everything Jim did, from Maverick, The Americanization of Emily, to Nichols, and Victor Victoria, and beyond, but I gotta say, it was The Rockford Files that won and still holds my heart. 2 GREAT GUYS!
Got to agree!
Too late at night.
I think Rockford was convicted of armed robbery, but it was a "bum rap" and he received a full pardon.
What's up with the glasses?
Did he say that "Roger Moore played the English c•nt" at 3:57?
I believe he said cousin.
It was "cousin". Just a bit chopped in this video.
Yes, definitely "cousin." Jimmy would never say the other. Too much class.

Too much alcohol in Mr. Garner. His memory is still great.
At the end of the movie Maverick they reveal James Gardner was Mel Gibson's son so he was a Maverick in the movie.
tom takes calls then acts like he cant get you off the phone fast enough
He said, English cousin.
Jim didn't give a hoot about bosses. He cared about clients (viewers)....there's a lesson there, somewhere.
Or warms up!
Have to disagree with Mr. Garner. Jack Kelly was a great Maverick, but Jim "OWNED it" big time.
No one else coulda played "Rockfish", as "Gandi" played by Issac Hayes called him! :-)
Dont do it anymore if it bothers you so much we can do without your vids.
Garner looks drunk in this interview. Just saying as a fan. Too many beers at the pub.
The jokes are awful for cable Tv!
James Garner changed his opinion about Mel Gibson when he realized that he was a huge antisemite , his wife, Lois is Jewish.
Lesley Leith Elaborate.
