- Tom Snyder was filling in for Bob Costas. This is a very contentious interview between Tom Snyder and Howard Stern. They both made no effort to hide their distaste for one another. I also posted another version with improved audio. Here's the link- • NBC LATER- 3 -22- 91 T...
Tom Snyder was a badass and a top notch interviewer. So glad I discovered him through youtube.
Same honestly. Now I relive the old days of late night television lol
Tom always slayed it. Love his stuff from 70's Tomorrow show till the end. Class act.
I can't take sides here, these two guys are/were giants in their field and this is a pleasure to watch. Thanks for posting it!
so very true
You're welcome!
I remember watching this in 91 and video taping it. It's one of the best interviews ever. Up close and personal and highly confrontational.
One of my favorite interviews. Like a train reck I can't stop watching.
Oh, my, gosh. This was absolutely priceless. Two of the greats clashing. I love them both. Good times, good times.
Tom Snyder was so underrated. Who else could take on Stern.
He was one of a kind.
Take on Stern in his PRIME nonetheless.
@@Danimal77 there was nothing to "take on." Stern was always an act, hamming up a supposedly antagonistic, edgy persona for the microphone & camera. When it came down to it, both Snyder and Stern were broadcasters with mutual respect for the other.
Stern was aggravated because he knew Tom had something that he could never have.
Except Tom sucked. Howard kicked his ass and everything he said would happen, did.
The Tom Snyder interview with Kiss, particularly Ace Frehley was legendary
the best. Ace 🤘🏻
Great to see this classic telecast posted. At a later date Howard would have Jerry Seinfeld on his radio show and Jerry stated that loved this exchange between Howard and Tom. Jerry actually called Jay Leno during the telecast and asked him to tape it.
Love it, Howard usually got his way on television, hosts would sit and take it, all the plugs, snide remarks, etc, Snyder didn't play that way, it made for great television. I think Howard a little frightened by Tom, he was physically imposing, kind of old school wise guy and ace broadcaster. Reminds me when Snyder threw Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold off his CNBC Talk Show. Tom never suffered fools gladly, we miss you man.
You are delusional 😂
Must have watched this interview a thousand times. This is the best copy of this I've seen online. saved it to my favs. Thanks for this.
That's nice to hear. You're welcome.
this seems tame compared with today
Love the interaction . Both at the top of their game !! I really miss Tom
It seems like there was some level of genuine affection here. This was great stuff!
@Belarion A.D. Tom exposed what a fool Stern was. He was frustrated only that had it been his show Stern would never be on.
was great to see again..thank you for sharing !
Glad you enjoyed it
After 22 minutes, I didn’t think it could get better but... “you are what is wrong with television” is just such a great way to go out
Credit to Tom! Good interview.
This was just great TV. I still love watching it. Howard slowly making Snyder crazy and angry throughout.
I love Stern BUT Tom got so far up Howard's ASS his shoes were resting on Howard's Lips. When Tom hit him with the murder scenario Howard Lost it.. Howard repeated that part Over and Over. It was a very good interview but Tom got the Best of Howard By Far.
dont forget the commercials...does the gal ad is still available LOL
I used to listen to Synder’s late late show in the 90’s to fall asleep. Soothing voice I guess.
Thank you so much for uploading this classic gem!
You're welcome. i appreciate that very much.
The irony here is the fact that Howard's style has evolved into something that mirrors Snyder's overall style.
So true
What happened to THIS Howard Stern? The HONEST one who wasn't afraid to say what he really felt? He became everything he rallied against.
Wow people lose their edge as the grow old? Can’t believe it
For a clue, listen again to the part where he talks about how grateful his fans are for being able to listen to something while they’re stuck in traffic. Now, compare that situation 31 years ago to today in 2022: satellite radio, Spotify, Deezer. Stern lost his edge because people don’t need him anymore.
@efs120 He didn't just lose his edge, he became Access Hollywood. It sux.
It’s called getting old. I love this Stern but it would be sad if he was still doing this at 70.
Give an example
Two heavyweights going at each other. TS we miss you!
Tom Snyder was a class act
I totally agree 👍 👌
more like an idiot
He's the most dull presenter in the history of TV.
He said shit on the air twice. He was bested here and anyone saying the opposite just doesn’t like Howard.
Oh man that chatline commercial @ 16:30, talk to ladies dancing in the park with 80's blazers and perms RIGHT NOW! I love it.
This is surreal . Howard has become so mainstream and so big in 2020 signing a multi million dollar broadcasting which allows him to work from home . He still portrays the oppressed underdog which people champion and that's part of his immense success.......
Snyder was a heavyweight and Howard wasn't ready for that
Such a classic interview that breeds controversy and hostility That makes you which there were more interviews like this where everybody was down everybody’s throat.
Tom Snyder: Unreal talent.
Hilarious-now Howard Stern makes T.Snyder look like 'the rebel.' Funny how things change. Back then Snyder was the conservative one and Stern was edgy...not now!!!
Exactly. Modern stern is an embarrassment…. Talk about OUT OF TOUCH
@Daniel Drader out of touch because the “edgy people” now aren’t edgy at all. They’re all about towing the line, being politically correct, following trends, and doing everything the government tells them. The conservatives are the edgy ones now because we have independent thought, rebel against wokeness, PC culture, and generally dislike big government. the tables have turned
@Daniel Drader And to further answer ur question about stern being out of touch, refer to 22:35 where he makes the argument against censorship. Fast forward to today, he openly calls for people to be censored, such as Alex jones. He has no conviction. he’s a fuckin phony
@Daniel Drader second this. People tend to forget that Howard moved from terrestrial radio to Sirius…thus allowing him creative freedom but in the long run to be less “shocking”. He’s also became more of an interviewer because of this
This interview was my first exposure to Howard Stern . I of course heard of him. Seeing Stern`s syndicated show later that year made me a fan .
Love this original footage though. Commercials are amazing.
"Where is Bob Costas?.......he lets you give a number!" LOL
I don't think Tom played it safe, dude had Iggy Pop, The Clash, and The Plasmatics on his show in the 70s
Manson too
ayn rand
Not to mention Goebbels.
That ending was perfect lol
Tom was above this BS.
between the two of these guys Tom Snyder was the one being real.
This is the Bulls v. The Lakers, this is the old meeting the new. Extraordinary.
Thank you very much for posting this gem! Heated debate, interesting, funny and never boring between two who have no respect for each other but do their jobs nonetheless. We all have a lot to learn from this :)
You're welcome. Great comment!
I came here waiting to be confirmed in my belief that Tom Snyder was being obnoxious to Stern... Came away just thinking Stern is absolutely mental in a bad way. He tries to have it both ways... If he was just going to be "real", "provocative", "out there", "funny", whatever - fine by me, totally :) But the way he tries to both be "crazy" and at the same time earnestly insisting that Tom is being hostile and impolite to him - moments before interrupting him saying "I don't know how OLD YOU ARE". I mean... That's just.. Stern commit to either or :)
Seriously? I didn't think Snyder was obnoxious but I have no beef with Howard's frenetic style.
Tom's the Best. Costas knew Tom could handle Howard. I remember this
1) I miss Tom Synder in this world, I loved his style. 2) So glad Howard has evolved as a man. 3) This was funny as hell😂😂😂 4) Great hair Howard👍
Evolved in what sense?
@@NoOne-kr4jc being more liberal and sensitive and human. I'm sure that bothers you.
@@qballz2833 LOL Liberals are oversensitive, insensitive to anyone that doesn't support them, and seek to divide & have laws made for them cause they think they're more special than others. Cancellers essentially. And it's time to turn them off
Vintage Stern was provocative, candid & entertaining. And for pure escapism, you could not take your eyes off it. In the end, it's humor. And if we laughed at ourselves more and stopped threatening to sue every 5 min for defamation, we'd have a better world.
My granddaughter, 22,just came in. I said do you know who that is? She said no... who is it? I said Howard Stern. She said she had no idea who he was. My have the times have changed. She has all the tech gadgets, smart phone and Apple Watch. Different world. Tom Bush
That’s sad
The sad thing is the Howard Genuinely wanted Tom to like him. He respected the relationship between him and Dave. He loved Tom, but at the end of the day he way just too "Old Guard" to be swayed. Stern really believed in a Letterman NBC 11:30 and a Snyder 12:30 block. Its a shame really.
14:20 - pow, ouch. “...you’re getting old-“ it’s like a boxing match. Tom is getting cut up. Certain words are zingers. Howard is brutal and full of surprise blows that hit hard. Intense. I had to put it on pause. Yes, I bought the HS Crucified By The FCC box set of CD’s with photo book.
Like it or not both were pioneers in their field.
I am a fan of howards but I do like tom snyder here, I do not know much about the man but I wish these two had their own show today just to argue. I am sorry to hear he passed away in 2007, he was a bit ahead of my time.
Tom is great, many classic late-night TV interviews, pranks with Letterman, &c
Tom Snyder had a lot of class. Howard Stern was as questionable as it gets. Never understood Stern's appeal. It is get anything for ratings. Pat Cooper buried Stern well.
I saw the press conference interview from 1994 and Snyder said that this interview was staged and that they were cordial during the commercial.
best interview ever
This is the work of a true master.
What a fantastic interview! Tom Snyder was huge at this time, bigger than Howard was. Howard was such an interesting guest here, the interview really kept Tom on his toes and was such a stand out amidst the typical boring celebrity interviews. This is why Howard is still at it today, he really has that something special. Even people who say they hate him watch his interviews and listen to clips here long enough to say thefy hate him :)
I watched because of Tom Snyder, since it was a clip I'd never seen before, not because of Stern. Tom Snyder after Johnny Carson - two perfect night time show hosts.
I watched this when it first aired. Classic!
It's kinda refreshing seeing someone not be afraid of Howard, who's ultimately just a provocateur. Howard comes out swinging like he always does to off balance Tom and Tom easily bats it off and then Howard can only try to gaslight him and put words in his mouth. Obviously, it's annoying to anyone and especially when you're attempting to have a conversation with someone that doesn't want to really have a conversation, but Tom handles it like a pro, gives Howard enough to think he got Tom's number just to accidentally have a conversation. Total pro, Tom is a class act.
that was so easy to read his lips when he said 1-800-52-STERN @ 6:04
Someone should have “cancelled” Stern in his cradle.
Howard Stern reminds me of any interview with Gene Simmons (and that isn't a compliment)
Long live the memory and spirit of Tom Synder.
A classic. Saw the original airing. Have it ob videotape.
Genius, back before Howard Stern sold out, this interview now embarrasses Howard Stern lol.
Honestly, it embarrassed him way back in early 2006. I'm listening through the entire first year of sirius, and he talks about this interview during the second Friday show on Feb 21 2006. He was embarrassed by this LONG before Marci Turk and going Hollywood. The only reason I'm watching this video is because I paused his show so I could hear what embarrassed him.
What's funny is Howard Stern today after he made his money completely changed his philosophy. At least Tom Snyder was consistent.
Howard looks like a female gym teacher
This was great! 🔥🔥🔥🔥God I miss the country we used to have before everything turned to shit
I was visualizing points like they do in basketball games, Stern-67, Snyder-54. Update, Snyder is making up ground...Stern-74, Snyder-68
I honestly loved both of these guys…but after seeing what Howard Stern has turned into…I can’t help but feel hate towards Howard Stern now for being such a hypocrite.
…and pretty much everything Howard Stern is putting down here Howard Stern has become.
Always come back to this interview. Stern had it on Snyder but it took Snyder to get Howard going.
Super funny interview. Classic
They both liked each other is my gut feeling
2 complete opposites but Tom had much class Howard didn’t. It’s very clear here.
Hey NOW ! "Gotta call that '900' Number, right away !" lol
It's a shame, that obviously Tom didn't get it ... 'These Two' together, were Great ! Truly, one of the most entertaining interviews, ever !
Wish Brooklyn was still like that.
Trashy with the smell of cocaine and hairspray?
He tried not to laugh when he said word association
I miss Tom Synder
I liked him as well. I watched the late late show and loved his interview style. He wasn't gossipy he would just sit with his guests and have a conversation. It was very nice.
He was a hero of mine when I was a teen and I discovered him on CNBC. I loved the way he would talk about mundane things that happened in his everyday life, like little experiences while shopping in a grocery story and seeing people do cute things, etc.
jay1776 tomorrow show ;)
I do too, what we have today is worthless
@@madambutterfly7513 Agreed. Worthless is the only word to describe the talentless clowns we have nowadays.
Tom mentioned the DMV...and Stern thought he was referring to Vietnam.....the DMZ.....hehehe
Howard knew what was going on and what the DMV was. He was just distorting to piss Snyder off and throw him off.
Literacy sitting on the left; titillation sitting on the right.
I love to see howard backpedaling.
Tom know what he is doing.
Howard Stern is now the anti-Howard Stern.
11:02 god those pants are riding up so high on Tom. Yikes.
so dial "1 900 446 gals" and you can talk to 90's girls who dances in the park.
i agree with Tom Snyder... Stern was not funny. his kind of entertainment was smut and had no endearing value.... Snyder was not out of touch.
Agreed. or enduring value
Snyder had a much better radio voice than Stern.
For sure. Stern's voice really aged nicely for the radio though.
Tom had a smoker's voice....used to be ideal for radio provided it wasn't raspy. Low pitched but clear-voiced is commonly heard across all markets and regions.
Tom didn't have to rely on compression like Darth Kermit does.
Two heavyweights slugging it out. Saw this when it first aired. Definitely not boring.
stern a man who is in love with himself who became a multimillionaire due to the business of radio and stupidity of the masses
I never really liked Tom Snyder but I was kinda surprised how bad Stern came off in this interview. Best way to handle a guy like Tom Snyder is just play it cool and give straight answers, make him look like the crazy one. Instead Howard tried to out-antagonize him and they both look crazy.
Great back and forth, even if it doesn't ultimately go anywhere. Snyder's comments about Rebecca Shaeffer were sort of ridiculous, considering a law was passed a few years later to prevent the DMV from selling private information, specifically inspired by that case.
Look at him he’s laughing, that’s the moment they became friends
Funny how HollyWood Howie was begging for plugs back then, and now he's worth a gazillion dollars
Howard became everything he criticized Tom for
WOW! Staged? Yes, Funny? Hysterical. Great Stuff. RIP to The wonderful Tom Snyder.. Baba Booey!
Hysterical
Two brilliant broadcasters going te to te. T.S. kept up "pretty good" as he would be want to say. Howard was great too!
This interview always makes me laugh. LOL :)
great show !
and now Stern is everything he railed against....sad. he should have retired a long time ago
I dint follow stern..but am curious...where and when did he go wrong?
No Howard Stern grew up and made a lot of money married a crazy women. Not funny anymore but still has done it all doesn’t regret his career now is slowing down at 65.
@@Wongwongwong10000 wife 1 or 2?
@@Rhezoloution he got wealthy, bruh. that make you lame.
wow, this... Pre-Artie leaving Howard was the greatest. Pre-Artie Arriving as golden. Now he's Tom Snyder
Mrs poodle hair was a jerk, I don't know if it was just an act or he was being serious. Clearly tom snyder was mad afterwards.
Howard used to be so funny and had true balls and didn’t care who he pissed off. Back in the day he was unbeatable, I miss the old Howard.
It’s like someone castrated him. I used to listen to him everyday and couldn’t wait for the show, now he barely works, repeats the same stuff over and over & shills for the Democrats. I looked to him for an escape not to hear about politics endlessly. Ronnie is the best thing on the show.
I saw an interview Snyder did with Letterman where he said that him and Stern planned out what they were going to say during the commercial breaks.
What a beautifully, awkward interview! Two titans of the medium going at it for our entertainment! The old guard interviewing the younger, rising star who would eventually reach heights one could only dream of. During this era Howard had trouble booking celebrities on his show because they were afraid of potential damage to their careers. Today Howard is mainstream Hollywood and has ironically become what Tom Snyder was then. For years after this, Howard would keep taking jabs at Tom
Howard Stern is great at what he does- entertaining. He and his team are like 8th graders that took over the principle's office and intercom. But as a human being ? A low life cruel abusive human being. It's 2022. He has been seeing a therapist for decades. For damn good reason. He cant stand himself.
Stern just wants to argue for the sake of argument.
That was great!!
