I applied for the AMEX Cobalt card yesterday. My credit is fair to good. I got approved with $25k credit limit! Will receive it in the mail in 2 weeks. Can’t wait!
It's rare that I can't use my AMEX, I'm a power user as you say and I specifically use it everywhere. When I can't I have my Aeroplan Visa in reserve. The big ones are Costco and Loblaws. Unfortunately Costco only takes MasterCard and there are no good rewards cards with them so I just suffer with either my BMO Rewards or Triangle. But AMEX is accepted almost everywhere, except those two big ones, and some smaller restaurants and shops.
I’ve found at the most, 1 in 10 places I go too don’t accept and it’s usually restaurants, small coffee shops or bakeries. So I just shop where it’s accepted. I have my usual spots in my area I go too and they all accept it. Sometimes there is a minimum $5.00 purchase but that’s usually it.
This is broadly correct. I’m a big Amex user and proponent but I will say I do run into a non-inconsequential amount of times I can’t use it (maybe 10-15% of when I would use) and it’s very frustrating to do the dance of having to pull out a different card after you’ve tried with the Amex. Still, their cards are 100% worth it for my use case and I have 3 Amex issued cards as a result.
Fair enough!! Yeah it can be a little annoying I suppose and I do find myself still habitually asking if they take Amex before I try - but yeah I really don’t care that much haha.
I use my Cobalt card every chance I can, and there has only been 2 places that dont accept it which hasnt really been a problem because I usually only spend $40 or less at those locations each time.
I just got my Cobalt and I have thoughts. I went to set up my auto payments thru RBC, and it asked if the Amex was a Reg, Plat or Gold card. I am thinking its just considered a regular card 😂 the other section made me wary of how to make a payment too. It asked if it was a 700, or 800 prefix card😂 its a 340 beginning humber. I live in a small community in BC, where only one of the three grocery stores accepts the card 😔 what is a runner up to this card?
I'm from Barbados and most places here don't take AMEX..it's either Visa and Mastercard.if businesses here take Amex,it would usually be for a large purchase.
My second credit card is the Scotia Amex, I actually have only ran into one place in the 5 months I’ve had the Amex card that hasn’t accepted my Amex, and that one place was a Hero burger lol. So ya it’s something that crossed my mind at first but now I don’t even think twice about telling them it’s Amex, I honestly just say credit now and I’ve had no issues
I don't know about east coast but I live in BC and every place I have been to accept it. There is only one gas station in town that doesn't accept it and the other major place being Tim Hortons
Not sure why this is still a thing in Canada. I had a 6k MSP on the amex platinum and had no issues using the card anywhere. Unless you exclusively shop at Superstore or Loblaws.
I agree, people using amex are typically wealthier and businesses want to attract these customers. I run a business and gladly accept amex because these amex customers have more disposable income than any other forms of payment
I commented in a different video of yours before coming into this one, I have had the amex simply cash for a while and I am now interested in the Cobalt. Do you have a backup card you'd recommend to pair up with it if the goals is to accumulate points for traveling? I was considering the TD Aeroplan Visa, but I'm not sure I want to spend those high fees in 2 different cards
Does it make sense to have multiple cards? I have the platinum but am wondering if I should get the cobalt as well as it’s 5x the points on restaurants
If you can afford both cards and you can make the most out of it then im not seeing any problem there. I heard some but not most people do that. Points rack up for cobalt. Benefits and insurance for the Plat.
Hey I’m struggling between two cards and was wondering if I could get a recommendation? Trying to choose between the “BMO Cashback world elite MC” and the “CIBC Dividend cash back card”. If you could help me out. Thanks!
Hey bro!! I think the top BMO World Elite is definitely one of the best in the game right now for cash back. The multiples are awesome and I think it slightly edges out the dividend BUT I haven’t had a look to see if the dividend has had some major upgrades. So I would confirm what I’m saying if I was you but I’m very impressed with the world elite offering!
loblaws and their affliated (no frills, T&T) and pretty much all asian restaurants i goto don't take amex unfortunately. Even my TA (who saves me a bundle on J class tickets, don't take amex and i'm spending 15k for a pair to tickets)

Do not get a new credit card until you can manage 1 credit card

Costco did take AMEX before they switched to Mastercard!
Watching this video while waiting for my Scotiabank Amex.
Costco and Loblaws don’t accept AMEX. So it’s good to have PC Mastercard World Elite alongside to get PC optimum with Loblaws and Groceries at costco

True! Yeah it’s good to hear most people haven’t had trouble!

Costco doesn't accept Amex

No it’s not a myth, a lot of places I go don’t accept amex… still not

Is the Amex Green card a good card to start?

I’ve already gotten 36,000 Amex points since January on my Cobalt. I’m good for it

The Personal Insurance doesn't accept AMEX

Great video, I agree totally.
Awesome, thank you so much!!
I prefer Sobeys to Loblaws because of the AmEx acceptance.
Tellin ya - it’s a real thing!

If you can make back the monthly fee of the Cobalt with the cash back then it’s recommended
If you can afford both cards and you can make the most out of it then im not seeing any problem there. I heard some but not most people do that. Points rack up for cobalt. Benefits and insurance for the Plat.
What is the minimum annual income to get the Amex Green card?
0

Is there a way to use Amex for Costco?
no
Unfortunately not at the moment
Instacart 👍

Buy gift cards or prepaid visas and mastercards, problem solved
