D&D with High School Students S01E04 - THE FINALE - DnD, Dungeons & Dragons, newbies

  • Last episode of this first season features the end of the adventure AND a post-game interview with the newbies about their experiences playing D&D!
    I'm a media teacher and a lifelong gamer. For their final class project, my students decided to make a mini-series about a group of high schools students playing D&D. #DreamComeTrue
    The 4 students have never played D&D before, so in this first episode I outline the game and help them create characters. The circumstances for season 1 were VERY last minute - this was literally an impromptu "final project" for these advanced media students. I chose to set the adventure in my original world, on a continent and region where specifically there are only humans. I provided them with limited options because of the SETTING; not because I'm a control freak. The limited time we had to do all of this (literally the week before final exams and the end of the semester) prevented us from leisurely exploring all of the PHB options.

    • @adolfodef
      @adolfodef 6 років тому +29

      Is not that they would "never" helped him, but rather that she had "press for more info" him before running in the middle of the night with strangers (since none of the 5 knew each other beforehand; besides maybe some "friendly chat" between the Hunter and the Rogue).
      -> Perhaps some of the locals the Inn or the town knew Malcom (or his wife), so to at least verify that his story was true.
      Of course, there was also the option to wait for daylight [they had no reasons to believe that there would be much difference on the "survival chances" of either the child or the woman if wolves tracked/attacked them for one full day].
      No-one could know about the demon ritual, so they would be dead (and the party would had a much bigger challenge); but is unlikely that they could say "for sure" when the demon was summoned.
      -> For the quest_giver it would just turn from "rescue" to "avenging" his family.

      @@adolfodef It was their first Adventure Man. And they are young. I liked it. You cant just throw some noobs together and give them some complex Murder-Cases to solve or something like that. It was a good adventure, small, easy to get behind. I dont know, it felt right for this composition of players. Like

    • @adolfodef
      @adolfodef 5 років тому +4

      @@HerrMatom Sure. The "time for the ritual" was basically set up by the DM as "whenever the party manages to find the place" (the "backstory" of the wife and the child would change to adapt to the situation retroactively).
      -> My analysis was based on Osjey´s _"If it was for her they would..."_ [that necesary needs a "set in stone" world, otherwise it would be recursive].

      @HerrMatom 5 років тому +7

      @@adolfodef I would run it that way, with MY Players. Not with newbies. But i understand what you mean. And you are right. Im just saying that in that specific setup i would say it was tailored to them. Of course it was. They need to be successful. If they start with losing, they wont try it again. :D
      Again, no bad blood. You are right - if the setting of the adventure and Players are ready for that.

    I'm a French Teacher in Canada, and I've been trying to use D&D as a learning tool to help students learn French. I try to have the NPCs be all French-speakers and all the writing, spells, and treasure they find be described in French.
    Instead of Proficiency Bonuses, I have students recite conjugations tables or answer a question to see if they get a Bonus to their roll and to see the extent of the bonus depending on how difficult of a question they answered.
    Watching your videos here helped to inspire me to keep going; I'm still experimenting with the concept but watching this helped me to motivate me to keep experimenting to see what I can make from all this. Thanks for the vids and look forward to Season 2!

      @JohnDoe-kh3rc 6 років тому +13

      To be honest I fear this may backfire heavily. If my French teacher would have done that when I still was in school this would have not only failed in raising my interest for French but would have also actively driven me away from D&D, creating unnecessary aversions contra a usually great game. I don't think roleplaying should be done in any language you're not speaking at least at a C1 (CEFR) level of speaking and hearing. Any level below would massively impose the ability to immerse in the game world and therefore crush the possibility to truly enjoy the campaign while also giving a feeling of 'this is work' instead of 'this is fun'. Not a good idea for high school in my opinion. But it might work for universities who teach foreign languages as main subject.

    Bill, I am late to the comment train, but this series has been exceptionally brilliant. I'm a 23 year old D&D player that's loved the game since I was 14, but I've always had trouble getting my non-initiated friends into the game. I often feel like a crappy DM, but this series helped me come up with some ideas and strategies to get my college mates together for some great D&D fun. In fact, my friends and I are starting a weekly campaign next month because they loved the game so much. Thanks for the great content.

    Bill, Bravo, Bravo (applaud). I wasn't going to comment, but the more I thought about it. I think some things need to be said. 1) What a great twist on bringing a live game to youtube with high school students. It's simply a great idea for many reasons. Passing "the game" as I like to call it, down to people who have never played for one. And for two, paying it forward to young kids where it's obvious to me they truly enjoyed themselves on their first little adventure you conjured up or got somewhere...whatever...it was great dude. 2) Attempting to bring as much as you could (I assume you were on the road for this gig and had to pack everything you were going to need to play, it showed a lot of dedication on your part) to "the game" and exposing them to a new game, story telling, terrain, and you truly blew me away with this last video on allowing one of the kids to play live guitar as background music for special effect. Dude...that's awesome. Being a guitar player myself, I especially thought that was extra special. 3) In as much as I don't know you personally, it really makes a statement of what a cool/great guy you are to take the time to spend with kids/people who don't know "the game" like we do and expose them to a world of adventure. I really got the feeling in the wrap up that each of them got something out of the experience and the fact that this was fun, and if they continue with this, there is a lot more adventure in their future. And they're right for thinking so. All seemed to have fun. I believe you hooked them, as even Heather stated that she would want to see how more experienced players play. If she only knew what a big subject that was. lol Didn't mean to get wordy here and there is tons more to talk about. So I'll close with, Bill, you should be very proud of yourself and your idea, I think you did a lot of great things for your channel, the d&d community as a whole, and for those kids that had a great time learning and playing a new game. Well done Bill, well done...Cheers.

      Thank you so much Ron. Your words ring true, so true. All of the kids had fun and more of them want to play now. I love that YOU love Tony playing guitar - that was totally unplanned; about 3 minutes before the session started Tony suggested he play guitar. I talked him through the kinds of vibes I'd want, and everything else was improvised by Tony. It was awesome!

      I thought it was absolutely terrible for the mood, too loud, and detracted from the atmosphere entirely. The kid was playing top 30 pop stuff from the last few years, totally ill framed for the setting, and was playing really loud overpowering all the audio and distracting from even the DM.

    • @tildessmoo
      @tildessmoo 6 років тому +16

      bashpr0mpt Agree to disagree: to me (or maybe on my speakers) it was a faint background pleasant music and only got loud during the final battle, when loud was appropriate. Sure, acoustic guitar wouldn't have been my first choice, but you take what the kids in the class can give you in this kind of situation. As for top 30 pop stuff, I didn't recognize any, but even if that's what he was doing, do you expect a high schooler to be able to improvise an appropriate soundtrack for over half an hour? I just figured it was random strumming, but if he managed to flow from song to sing instead, I think that's more impressive.

      Was it too loud? Yep! Did it improve, embellish or enhance the game in anyway? Nope! Was it distracting and annoying to the point that the DM had to intervene? Yep! Then maybe loose it for next time! Music can be a resourceful tool when used correctly. In this case it was not necessary, but nice try. (Subjective opinion of course).

  • @bobxbaker
    @bobxbaker 6 років тому +10

    this is great to see someones first crack at this game, but i really feel they need more of the roleplay side of things, let them explore that and settle into it, because i think it very quickly becomes more of a meta gaming experience otherwise revolving around numbers trying to achieve the best results instead of choices from their characters, and to do that i think you need to let them come up with a backstory for their character and make them have characteristic flaws either through backstory or a bad stat in their character sheet.
    but considering time limitations etc i think this was a valiant effort.
    also heathers idea of bringing a student to an actual game where the people actually get into it would probably make the newcomer open up a lot more and see what's normally the case if you're running a good game let them immerse themselves a lot more.
    how you could introduce them? maybe one of the players could get a protogé, a squire, a disciple or something of the sorts. they could teach them about their class or race as they played. anyway that sounded like a fun idea.

    @TheBillAllan , returning to this series is a wonderful thing because it shows the innocence and the purity of new players. As the season's progress the players get into a different mindset. Not to say they don't have their take on their character's persona but it's not the same as RAW play from an inexperienced player. So fun to revisit these episodes. Wondering what these players are doing now 3 yrs later.......
