    Did a reasonable amount of trips to/through Derby in the 80's & 90's - as you'll see from future movies. The Class 151 was built by Metro-Cammell as a 'rival' to the BREL 150 series, but it(and its twin)had 'radical' gearboxes which proved troublesome so they never made it into production. They worked Matlock services most often before being withdrawn and stored, and sadly were eventually scrapped - so a bit of history for sure there.

    Interesting to see that there used to be a service from Derby to llandudno. Would have been an interesting ride if it was still available though.

    Great video Darren. I spent many an hour on Derby platforms in the 80s as a teenager.

    What a fantastic video, thank you. It's amazing to see how much classic traction and rolling stock there was on offer those days. The 31s and 47s sounded and looked fantastic and that eight car 116 formation was a glorious sight to behold. Brilliant.

    Indeed they were stored there - sadly got scrapped in 2004 though. They did feature a lot on Matlock trains in that period, so guess you would've been on one - a very jerky and rough gear change by all accounts! Glad you liked it - plenty more in the archives yet :-)

    Indeed. The second generation DMU's were just starting to appear of course and had made inroads into the loco hauled workings, but we were still a good 10 Voyager free years away :-)

    Excellent shots Darren. What a contrast to what its like now! Always great to see the loco hauled passenger workings and some of the more unusual older units.

    Yes, pretty much all Voyagers now, with just a couple of Cross Country HST's each way to do that on now sadly.

    The 151 was one of a pair of prototype DMU's that never made it into production, the 150 series being chosen instead. Glad you enjoyed.

      If the 151s had still been in traffic through 1989 the DMU shortage would have had less impact and not had to resort to scratch rakes and Class 20s that were never designed to work passenger trains...
      Isn't hindsight wonderful...

    • @danielsellers8707

      I remember riding the 151s on the Matlock line. The 151s were originally intended as a new fleet for the Cross City line in Birmingham; the West Midlands PTE keen to support local business as they did with the MCW Metrobus.
      In my head canon the 151s now work on the Norramby branch on the Island of Sodor; I have named them Derby and Matlock!
      They are friends with BoCo the Metropolitan Vickers diesel and they met D5705 (BoCo's brother) at Matlock in their BR days...

    When the 151 was very new it was on the "Wirksworth phenoix " railtours.
    I'm glad that the Wirksworth line finally was restored. ..just a shame the 151 isn't around to recreate that summer Sunday in 1984 (ish. ..its been a long time now lol )

    • @MrDeltic15
      @MrDeltic15  8 років тому +2

      +Adelle Stevens 1984, don't remind me, I would've been 14 then! The 151's were certainly odd units, but it would indeed have been nice to see this running on the Wirksworth line today.

    • @andrewphillips9391
      @andrewphillips9391 5 років тому

      they were sadly non-standard, having aluminium bodies, different bogies and transmissions to the 150s. The transmissions gave very jerky shifts as I recall. BR ordered more 150s instead, but Metro-Cammell at least got to build the 156s. The 2 151s were withdrawn around 1989 but lasted until the early 2000s before scrapping

  • @MrDeltic15
    @MrDeltic15  11 років тому +1

    Thanks very much. I did manage to get out and about quite a bit in the late 80's and early 90's, but back then rail travel was a lot cheaper! If i remember correctly an All-Line Railrover for a week was only about £100 - and i could clock up several hundred miles easily, probably over 1,000 miles actually!

  • @MrDeltic15
    @MrDeltic15  12 років тому +1

    Thanks Hayden. Yep, certainly a bit different at Derby on a Saturday now! As my 1980's & 1990's videos continue to appear you'll really see the change from loco hauled to multiple unit operation on a number of services across the country, including West Highland, Trans-Pennine, Waterloo-Exeter, Birmingham-Norwich, and Cross Country routes.

  • @MrDeltic15

  • @MrDeltic15
    @MrDeltic15  11 років тому +1

    I might well do, there is more to come from Derby around this era, so it could pop in in some of those.

  • @MrDeltic15
    @MrDeltic15  11 років тому +1

    Totally agree with you. Also miss the windows where you could savour the sounds and smells of the locos - mostly gone too of course, with even Chiltern Mk3's being plug doors now. I'd love DRS to expand more into passenger operations if they could - should have the Sellafield 'Glowex's' running soon - but imagine DRS 37's and Mk2's on the North Wales coast running Summer Saturdays to Holyhead/Llandudno. How about HNRC 20's on West Coast Railways Mk1's to Skeggy! We can only dream......

    I'd be interested to know what some of those passenger workings might have been, in particular 47 + six Mk1s, pair of 31s (I guess that had probably come from either Yarmouth or Skegness), the lengthy rake of suburban DMUs (class 115, 116 or 117), the 31 with mk2s

    Nice video with proper trains where you didn't have to sit in a rattling din of engine noise for hours on end but could sit in comfort and quiet while the engine sat at the front where it should be! Great to see the old stuff and the Llandudno train! Have to change twice to get there now! Not much freight at Derby now and HSTs are scarce. Rattley, clattery 170s, 220s, and 222s replace the loco haulds and most HSTs. Progress? No.

  • @davidmills4292

    when overcrowding on trains was unheard of

    • @AndreiTupolev
      @AndreiTupolev 4 роки тому

      Well, Sprinters had just been introduced then, so there was plenty of overcrowding on those, but yes, there wasn't much overcrowding on cross-country trains before Virgin came along with their dogma of four coach trains with only three of those being standard class

  • @vipmebim
    @vipmebim 11 років тому

    It certainly was cheaper especially if you worked for the railway which I did for 9 years.Just wish I had spread my wings a bit and travelled further afield. I have quite a few regrets about that.

  • @bus131
    @bus131 11 років тому

    unfortunately according to the money men it is progress. Less wasted space on a train equals more money crammed inside it. I was only born is 85 so the by the time I could remember anything worth while was really the HST & the odd loco hauled service, I think mainly the old sleeper service used to call at Kettering about 19:00 if i'm not mistaken. But I've grown to love what I missed via youtube & heritage railways.

    In my fanfiction the 151s now run on the Norramby branch on the Island of Sodor; I've named them Derby and Matlock and they are friends with BoCo the Metropolitan Vickers Type 2 and his brother D5705 who they met at Matlock during their trial service! I wrote these stories as a tribute as I feel they deserved a better fate!
