I am a 5' girl and when I first heard the Randy Newman version I was so insulted, then I saw this version (the King's Singers happen to be my favorite group), it is now my theme song.
My uncle was telling me one day that if my goal in life was to be taller than I am right now, that I would have a long miserable life. Then, my sister showed me this and I laughed so, so hard. It is now my theme song. I love it.
Ok, I think now I have it. From left to right: Jeremy Jackman (countertenor) Alastair Hume (countertenor) Grayston "Bill" Ives (tenor) Anthony Holt (baritone) Simon Carrington (baritone) Brian Kay (bass) I think it's like that...
They've always been great, but one of the great joys to me has always been watching Alastair Hume's hair fade away over the years. I think his countertenor voice actually improved as he got balder.
This little recording is miraculous. It's one of those unnoticed gems that can pass you by without a thought, but when you really listen to it closely, blows you away.
I am small but I love this song. Bill Ives the 'short tenor' has a great sense of humour. I am sure he enjoyed singing this. He is also a great musician. It was a sad day when he decided to stop sharing his musicianship around the world. Our loss Oxford's gain
Of all the great tenor singers (3rd voice down from top) beginning in the early 1970s to 2022, Bill Ives was the best of them all. What a rich, resonant, clear beautiful voice he has.
This concert was their first appearance with the Boston Pops. In the same concert they performed their version (for six voices a cappella) of the overture to The Barber of Seville, which left many of the orchestra members open-mouthed with astonishment.
And that very same piece brought the King's Singers into my life and that of my then young kids. We have listened to pretty much all the iterations of that wonderful ensemble, but the "Tiddlybooh" song remains one of our favourite :)
This video is played daily, it makes me smile and sing to myself... Funny, brilliant, fantastic harmonies oh and did I say it makes me smile a lot too, watch the Tenor in the middle, his expressions are fantastic, and right at the end they all try to stop him leaving... Tee hee... Brilliant Kings singers now and in 1982... :0)x
For the longest time I thought my dad was making it up when he would sing "short people got no reason to live!" to my mom! I got curious and searched it. Here is the glorious beast of a song
I love this, it always makes me smile, the expressions on all of them but mainly Bill Ives, the tenor...hee hee... Classic Kings Singers... I remember the line-up from watching in the late 70's and into the 80's on BBC2... Wonderful memories and fantastic singing as always... Keep singing chaps... :0)x
I absolutely love this song... it makes me grin stupidly and sing along... the comedy element is fun too... and the vocals are sublime and so well blended, it's be added to my favorites... I used to watch The King Singers with my mum in the 80's on ~BBC2 Love it, love it... hee hee :0)x
+RogueWeather how did you become an atheist? I myself 42 years ago was going that route but I was diverted by information of modern Isreal being fufilment of Bible prophecy in 1948 & the taking back of Jerusalem in 1967 &still the unfulfilled prophecies soon to be fulfilled including ////////!!!!!!!
RogueWeather before 1948 most atheist did not believe Isreal would become a nation & I heard a famous Bible teacher Hal Lindsay say the he has been given old copies of books that were written in the twenties & thirties by atheist skeptics authors talking about modern Isreal becoming a nation would never happen & their reasons why according to them but in the end, Isreal became a nation! Unfulfilled prophecies are Jerusalem becoming their capital, rebuilding of their third temple! Remember they had two earlier temples both destroyed! BTW I have learned that all the pieces are already made & ready to go at a moment's notice! A final world-wide holocost in which two-thirds of the Jews are killed!(Hitler 70 plus years ago killed one-third)! The remnant third will come to accept Jesus Christ as Yeshua/Messiah & that is when He comes back to save this remnant & begin His Millenial reign of this world !!!!
For those who've asked, the "short guy" is Grayston ("Bill") Ives, who in another life was a composer of church music and one-time tenor at Guildford Cathedral - although, watching this video, it's hard to believe. A great singer and a really nice man.
This song is amazing. I love how it makes fun of the idiocy of judgmental people. ^^ We're singing this in my jazz choir, and we have a few short people in there. They're completely into it. ^^
haha! I love this! We sang this version for our big choir production this past Spring. Needless to say, the crowd (and us singers) loved it! Great song.... especially for a 5'9" gal like myself lol :P
I absolutely love this song... I used to watch The King singers in the 80's with my mum on BBC2 ... Brilliant vocals, comedy touches and of course fantastic voices... FABULOUS :0)x
I love this song im the tallest in my family even taller then my older brother and he hates that. The king's singers have have been great back then and are still now
My choir teacher loves these guys! We're singing tons of songs by them, so I just had to look them up :) They're awesome! But my little short friend who is in choir with me is not a fan of this song, hahaha :)
People please take a very large dose of 'sense of humour' is with this song... I love it and it is still makes me grin, it always makes me smile and face the day ahead in very good spirits indeed... It is telling you that prejudice is stupid and silly, whilst making you take a good hard look at yourselves in the process... It is brilliant and 'Oh' Randy Newman who wrote this is not above 5ft 5ins I think... The KIng's Singers are AWESOME ... Enjoy peeps and smile too eh!!! ... :0)x
Brilliant... just had to have another dose of humor, fantastic singing and fun.. OH if you want to see the guys singing Barber Whop... type in The Kings Singers on The Good Old Days... Fabulous and 4 sing 'I'm my own Grandpa'.. then the 2 countertenors come on and sing ' No place like home'... Love it, love it... I'm smiling again... Hee hee... :0)x
At my job when I first started working there -a short bald black man was called "shorty" by a tall black man! For several months I just heard it&saw it at a distance! Then one day I got caught up&I have been caught up in it(OhhBTW its for fun) However Ive noticed how so many black folk are height concious&how they poke fun at short people&midgets&dwarfs really get them laughing! Just my observation as a average height 5 foot 8 inch white man! Thanks for posting this song&video Randy Newman 1977
in the bridge they say: short people are just the same as you and I, a fool such as I, all men are brothers untill the day they die meaning: the song is about everyone!!! OMFG, I AM SO SMART!!!!
@Ople60 totally agree with you it fits really well. I think the most amazing thing about this performance is that they're truly amusing themself! :) Plus, they sound really great together.
It's a metaphor for the human cultural history of discrimination - a very clever way to show how unfounded prejudices of any kind are when based on appearance, for example. In any case, the King's Singers are clearly playing with it as a motif. Rather entertaining :)
@ScottishgirlAnnlorie yeah, i am also short at 5'4", however, i have outgrown both my parents and grandparents, as well as my sister... however,, many of my friends are over 6' tall, so i too appreciate the song's humor :P
Randy Newman's song isn't about short people in size. It's about people who are short in the personality and character department. It's a satirical song. He was just making a point about the idiocy of prejudices and stereotypes.

The feeling of singing the D in the final chord (C9) is one of the most awesome things that can ever happen to a person.
It's actually a C add9 chord as it doesn't contain the 7th. But yes, it is rather lovely.
I am a 5' girl and when I first heard the Randy Newman version I was so insulted, then I saw this version (the King's Singers happen to be my favorite group), it is now my theme song.

Spot on. And the best KS lineup, IMHO.

Love the soloist's voice!!! The lyrics in his solo are nice too: "All men are brothers until the day they die."
This little recording is miraculous. It's one of those unnoticed gems that can pass you by without a thought, but when you really listen to it closely, blows you away.
I think it’s even better than the studio recording in some ways!
I am small but I love this song. Bill Ives the 'short tenor' has a great sense of humour. I am sure he enjoyed singing this. He is also a great musician. It was a sad day when he decided to stop sharing his musicianship around the world. Our loss Oxford's gain
That last chord is so delicious.
The King's last chords are universally sublime.
Amazing! Though they have new members right now, the older King's Singers really got that perfect pitch and stage presence. Bravo!

The quintessential (and perfect) Irish tenor.

i think whats makes this group exceptionally well is the entertainment factor they include. Some just sing, they make the audience laugh.

I'm not much of a churchgoer and a devout atheist, but this song can make me feel truly soft and fuzzy that all is alright with the world

No religious "prophecies" have been fulfilled. It's all vague and nondescript for a reason.
