I remember the freezing weather we had that month. Following some icy days, heavy snow came down by Monday 12th January and managed to cut off Kent and parts of Essex from the rest of the country for a while with deep snowdrifts! I got caught out by the conditions as,returning with a friend from staying in Oxford for the weekend,my brakes failed and I ended up crashing my car through some elderly couple's brick wall at the front of their garden! We were shaken but unhurt. They were very nice about it,taking us up into their living room and giving us cups of tea...as they waited for the police they had called to arrive. The was sadly a write-off and I'd only had it for two-and-a-half months!

This is why I have a love/hate relationship with golden oldie/nostalgia radio stations here in the UK, they only ever play the familiar BIG HITS from the 80s that everyone knows to death. The stuff in this video, the ones that never broke into the top forty, let alone the top twenty, that is the truer sound of the 80s.

The best came last: the BOLSHOI and Away,
unfortunately only #100. This song was my number 1, in my personal chart at the time... British listeners were a bit stupid back then🙏🙂. Thank you Francis for your excellent work 👍

I agree, but I think I've found a missing song from this month: Cross That Bridge by the Ward Brothers, which I remember hearing a few times when it made number 30-something around the end of January/start of February that year but haven't heard in probably 30+ years!

It's OK. I've found out that both those tracks were already in the lowliest reaches of the Top 100 by the end of 1986,though it wasn't until the end of January 1987 that they broke into the Top 40. Great video Francis as always!

Thank you for this upload Francis. My sister was one month old when these songs came out! (Now she's 36) Very underrated Dead or Alive track there. UB40 one of Brums finest. That Pepsi and Shirlie song is a forgotten good little pop song. I echo the comments about 'Elodrado' not making the Top 40. Not one of Gloria / Miami Sound Machine's finest hours. There are some I am not familiar with, and will investigate more. Forgotten and hidden gems. I am sure Glass Tiger had a big hit with that song in America. I hope Aretha and George are singing that in the afterlife (if you believe in that). Two finest vocalists sadly missed.
I have a joint winner with 'Caught Up In The Rapture' by the divine Anita Baker. Should have been a huge hit. Gorgeous ballad and that whole album is amazing from start to finish. The other joint winner is 'Rat In Mi Kitchen' by UB40. Excellent slice of reggae. Second would be Aretha and George (RIP both) and a joint third between Dead or Alive, Pepsi and Shirlie and one of Drum Theatre / Europe.

I thought the Anita Baker track did make the Top 40,perhaps at the second attempt later than this. Damn well should have,at the very least. Aretha & George,UB40,Europe are among my favourites from that month, and I liked the Mission's Wasteland a lot as well.

It’s a shame Drum Theatre and ‘Eldorado’ didn’t get in the Top 40. It was played on the radio in early 1987

I remember hearing their The Hunter and the Prey (if that's the right title?) song on the radio a year before that in very early 1986. Edit: Living in the Past was the title of the song I was thinking of.

A relatively little-known chapter of the UK Charts history - which encourages to look it over again.
I remember how much I enjoyed 5:42, a soulful, melancholic song and the singer's beautiful, deep voice. They really should have been bigger ..........

Forgotten Town - damn good song. It kicked off a string of several Top 30 hits for the Christians in 1987,including Hooverville and Ideal World. I bought the album on the strength of those. They had another hit in the autumn of 1988 with a cover of the Isley Brothers' 1976 classic Harvest For the World.

Random fact - Pepsi & Shirlie, backing singers for Wham!, were kept off of the #1 spot by… George Michael! His duet with Aretha Franklin kept ‘Heartache’ at #2
