    Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this live on UK Ch 4, which took the French camera footage. There was a big tail wind and long downhill section on the way out, which is why some of the riders were averaging about 57/58 kph. At one point the motobike cameras was showing the speedometer at 80 kph when Chiapucci was on that fastest section. But I also remember the footage showing Sean Yates suffering on the way back up - he said it was "interminable".

    It is a fact that, although no proof has been found, all these guys were as high as the Eiffel Tower... That being said, I am bloody proud of Induráin; cycling from that era, with constant attacks, sudden fatigue attacks that would make cyclists lose several minutes, those crazy Pantani faces whilst standing up climbing some ludicrous mountain pass, those insane 80km/h downhills with no helmet, taking newspapers from spectators to use them as windshields inside their shirts, etc...
    Rominger, Zülle, Pantani, Induráin, Delgado, Riis, Jalabert, Virenque, Zabel, Cipollini, LeBlanc, Abdoujaparov, Chiapucci, Rincón... although they were all as high as shit, in some crazy extreme way, '90s cycling was so much better than today's. Now, the Tour just sucks big time...

Multiple pro teams were on it in large quantities by 1990. The entire Team Motorola for example was on it as early as 1991. BS!! Indurain was one of the best dopers of all time. A 175 pound guy out climbing 150 pound climbers?? Big time EPO doper = Indurain.

    • @rwoodford9812
      @rwoodford9812 7 років тому +5

      Totally agree. Riis had to use EPO in order to beat Indurain, and he did. This was the beginning of systematic doping, after 1990, it all changed and drugs were now the way to win. Armstrong would not admit it, but even he beat Indurain in the 1993 Worlds on EPO. I find it interesting that they wanted to expose everyone but Indurain, he got the ticket out of jail.

    • @ivanboesky1520
      @ivanboesky1520 7 років тому +5

      Indurain was the start of the huge EPO push in the early 1990's peleton. Prior to him some riders had dabbled in it. He then took the cheating with it to a brand new level. He increased his watts per kilogram of body weight by more than a full watt in the early 90's. Completely impossible to do without major PED's assistance. He was as big of a doper as the Euro peleton has ever seen, and in truth he should have had all his TDF wins stripped as well.

      Nobody would play their lives on a mountain descent if they know they will win because they consume EPO.

      You have no idea. Indurain was in 80's a rider with great future. We had won 3 tours of the Tour l'Avenir. He won the vuelta a los alles mineros, the Volta of Cataluña and the Paris Niza and a stage in the tour in the 80's. Some of this victories before EPO was inveted. What win Riijs. Its clear that Indurain was an EPO user, probabibly due to his great power the biggest beneficiary, but Indurain was an very interested rider and Riijs was nothing. Riijs won the tour thanks to his 64% of hematocrit. I thinks Indurain never reach this figures.

      Not really. Early 90's were still relatively clean. EPO didn't hit hard until the mid-90's. Dr. Ferrari's first experimentation with EPO was in '94 with Gewiss-Ballan, then it became normal regimen in '95 on the team.

    • @EMC2Scotia
      @EMC2Scotia 10 років тому +11

      thechosendude You couldn't be more wrong. EPO was being taken and experimented with as early as 1988 in Holland, with the Italians en masse getting in on it and perfecting it's use around 1990. Indurain was probably turned onto it around 1991. This is the result.

    • @cup_and_cone
      @cup_and_cone 10 років тому +1

      EMC2Scotia - Not the majority. Some case examples? Sure, but not widespread in the peloton. EPO didn't take a strong foothold over majority of the peloton until around '94 (what Lemond cites) and '95 (what Lance & ex-colleagues cite).

    • @EMC2Scotia
      @EMC2Scotia 10 років тому +7

      Cases? Chiappucci, Bugno & Argentin. Compare their 89 results to their 1990 results. Indurain's climbing, especially his ability to attack and stay away from 1990 to 1991 suddenly was flawless. Chiappucci to Sestriere is another example. Do that today and tomorrow you'd lose 20 minutes.
