I signed up for TBR based on the video and have just got my first recommendations. Like Jean I’m in Scotland, so went for the digital options. I am delighted with what my bibliologist Amanda has picked. Really really excited to read them all. I honestly just said “Wow!” when I saw the selection. So so far extremely positive impressions for me. Thanks for doing the video Jean!
Ooooh I really hope you get to Plain Bad Heroines soon!! It's the one and only book I've given five stars to this year so far, and I agree with Emily, based on what I've seen of your taste I definitely think you're going to love it. I literally cannot praise that book enough!
I'm definitely going to look into the TBR service;it sounds amazing! So sorry you are feeling stressed about your PhD and had some time to escape into these books. :)
Thanks again for telling us about TBR Jean. I treated myself to a year’s digital sub. My first quarterly recs in July were all great reads. I’ve just been emailed my second bunch and am over the moon again! All new to me, all look like I’ll enjoy them a lot. A mix of fiction (folklore/fantasy and 1930s Singapore whodunnit) and non fiction (celebratory essays about lots of different gender identities). So yup, delighted, and thanks again!
I'm also a queer '92 baby and I love the sound of that essay collection, I've just added it to my Scribd library! If only we had the kind of media that exists now 😭 good luck with your PhD!!
This service sounds so cool and I'd consider signing up if I didn't have hundreds of unread books in my house. Speaking of book recommendations, based on yours, for Tea Dragon Society, I got the first book and read it to my daughter. We got books 2 and 3 from the library, read book 2 over the weekend, and are midway through book 3. We both love the series, so thank you for mentioning them. I will get all of K O'Neill's books for my daughter since she loves the Tea Dragons, but also because the characters are so diverse. Best of luck with your PhD. I have dermatillomania too (as well as periodic struggles with trichotillomania) and stress, nervousness, and PMS are the worst triggers for it. I just wanted to offer some moral support.
I loved Plain Bad Heroines. It's long and rambles and switches back and forth through time lines but I didn't care because I just loved whatever the author wanted to do with the story. Glad you had such a good experience with this sponsor. As for your stress - sending a hug and a cuppa.
I didn't even get all the way through this video before pausing to sign up to 'TBR'! Can't wait for my recommendations! Girls Can Kiss Now sounds like a book I'd really enjoy. Just yesterday I was clearing out some old magazines that I was still holding onto for some reason, and as I was having one last flip-through before recycling them, I came across a few mentions of Lindsay Lohan dating Samantha Ronson and was really disturbed. It wasn't, like, hateful, but it was objectifying and portraying it as something she was doing just to be edgy and get attention. Judgements that like that certainly had an impact on me as a young teen. The fear of being labelled as an 'attention seeker' was one of the things that held me back from even daring to consider the possibility that I was bisexual until I was in my early twenties.
I just started listening to The 2000s Made Me Gay on Scribd and it features a lot of the things you liked about Girls can kiss now. It's going on my list for sure!
This old bibliophile recommends for you: The Alchemaster's Apprentice and The City of Dreaming Books by Walter Moers, The Custard Protocol by Gail Carriger, Across the Journey River (I forgot the author's name), Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat, A Case of Curiosities by Alan Kurzweil, and Ramses the Damned by Anne Rice.
Oops, that was to be Along the Journey River by Carole Latour or something like that. It's a Native American whodunit and surprise lesbian romance. I may also recommend To to and the Lone Ranger Fistfight in Heaven and Reservation Blues by Sherman Alexie. Once a Greek (German original title Grieche Sucht Griechin) by Friedrich Dürrenmatt May also be up your street.
I think you might like the podcast Monstrous Feminine if you are into film/TV criticism they focus on feminism and horror with also a lot of focus on the itersections of gender and race and also occasionally queer identity. Love them soooo much
Also Hanif Abdurraqib is great for music critique and i love both his collections one focusing on just black performance on one on general music critique
How long did it take for the recs to arrive? The jump between times made your hair seem so much longer but I can’t tell if it’s just how you’ve done the curls lol
Have you heard of Lyons Leaf? I have perioral dermatitis and their zinc and calendula cream is the only thing I have found that worked for me. Oh, and nice book blog too 😊
So I went to purchase your book on Amazon and I purchased thru a third party vendor and I got scammed they sent me Robert Graves Greek Myths. I love books I almost feel bad for returning a book that will get thrown away. Alas lesson learned, don't purchase books from Hippo books on Amazon. My children were equally disappointed when I showed them what I ordered and what I received.
Hi Jean! It's been a while since Jen C has done a video and she mentioned she was having surgery. Could you share, if you know, how she is doing. Sending a hug. Thank you!
Jean did you really just say “keep abreast” while talking about a queer woman and her queer stories and keep a completely straight face? Not even a smirk?!
Since you love Dragons and stories with Sapphic themes surely you must like "Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid" (My favourite anime these days) - ua-cam.com/video/OMa9PoX9CUg/v-deo.html

That first top looks amazing: the neckline, the colour, the pattern, the sleeves. I love it!
Aw thanks - it’s a Topshop dress I found on Depop and I agree, the neckline is gorgeous!!
I no longer have Twitter, but when I did, Jill Gutowitz was one of my favourite people to follow! So excited to hear she has a book out!

I've seen Dating Dr. Dil around. Sounds like a fun one. Glad they recommended books you enjoyed. What a great way to add new books to your TBR.

It’s so funny because I don’t think I ever “came out” lol. I told my mom I was dating a girl and now we’re married.🤷♀️

I know, I can't imagine growing up with some of the awesome LGBTQ+ rep that's around now! I hope you enjoy the essay collection :D

Fellow trich person here (we’re not alone)

I find a cuppa can help a little in any situation.
We have this service free here in NZ via the library 🤗
That’s really cool!
These recommendations look fantastic and the vlog was so great! Thank you!
I have Plain Bad Heriones on my TBR too! Look forward to hear what you think. Best of luck with your PHD ❤️❤️❤️

I think I am the only person on earth on hated Plain Bad Heroines. I think I gave it 1 star.
How long did it take for the recs to arrive? The jump between times made your hair seem so much longer but I can’t tell if it’s just how you’ve done the curls lol
Aha it’s just the curls - it was about a week and a half 😁
Have you heard of Lyons Leaf? I have perioral dermatitis and their zinc and calendula cream is the only thing I have found that worked for me. Oh, and nice book blog too 😊
