Everyone in the comments: “How can this be my job? I didn’t know recommending books could be a job!”
Me, the Librarian: “Uhhh...”
Also booksellers. Did it for 8 years and made many recommendations based on people's preferences and tastes.
@@mslaureenslibrary Yup, previous bookseller. Doing that and then people coming back to get a sequel or ask me for more ideas, absolutely the best.
Hahaha!
@@deborahalice totally. I miss it, but Borders went under 😭
Laureen Pew I’m still not over Borders going under. LOVED that place.
Read the title and thought "why would I pay someone to pick books for me that I won't read, when I can choose my own books for free and not read them" 😊
hahaha that's too real
Or ask your bookish family members
Hahahahha
This reminds me of this amazing bookshop I went to in Bath where you pay for a “book spa” where you go into this super cosy room with a bookseller and spend half an hour eating cake and talking in depth about your fave books and then they go and pick out like 20 book recommendations and talk you through them and you get about 4 included in the price of the book spa. One of my favourite things I’ve ever done!
omg Emma, that sounds so wild
That would make an epic video
BooksandLala I actually did it for a video in the first place! It’s on my work channel (Book Break). Now thinking I need to do this service too and then compare which gave me better recommendations... 🤓
It’s this if anyone is in England and wants to support them when they’re back up and running! ua-cam.com/video/osdj_mfGiH4/v-deo.html
Drinking By My Shelf I want to go to there!
The gayer the better is such a mood.
Also, I have so much respect for readers who make character charts. I always just commit to having no clue who anyone is...
bruuuh sammeeee😂
committing to having no clue who anyone is is a mood
The one time I tried to do that, I had written out a couple of pages of character notes when I discovered the charts included in the back of the book. Heh.
This is one thing I love about XRay on Kindle. You just tap a name and it'll tell you a summary of the character and let you scroll through previous (or future if you want) mentions of the character.
@@Kamirose. That's so cool!
omg immediately googles “how to make recommending books a job”
I need to Google it now, but after the video
Tbh librarian or bookseller lol
Start a Yt channel😂
Haha I get to do it a lot as a library clerk! But I think working for a company like this would make it so much more enjoyable. It's stressful when someone asks and you have no idea what genres they even like.
“Become a booktuber”
I totally read the title as "getting a psychic to pick my tbr" and now I'm like ".... actually though..." like think about it? You could get a tarot reading and base the books on that, get a psychic general reading and then based on those themes pick books... so many options. do it Kayla, do it!
omg I love that
I think Drinking By My Shelf did something similar to this idea.
Ariel Bisset recently did the tarot card thing! It's a really fun video
Okay well I think you just chose her next challenge video
OMG YES
next time you should ask them for a recommendation for one of the countries on your reading map you haven't scratched off yet!
Omg FUN!
@@BooksandLala for Brazil, Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (Epitaph of a Small Winner), from Machado de Assis
Everytime I watch one of these I’m so impressed how WELL you know your tastes
Ummm YES we want part 2 is that even a QUESTION??
RIGHT?!!!
“Is there anything else you’d like your Bibliologist to know?”
“I have a 100,000 fans that will be watching your every move ...but no pressure👀😂📚😓”
I really appreciate that Lala makes the distinction that a successful selection of books is one that matched what she wanted, not necessarily three books that are all perfect favorites. I feel like on the clothing subscription side of things, people often don't make that distinction, even when things perfectly fit what they asked for.
There is a bookshop about 2 hours drive from me that offers an hour talking with a bibliotherapist who then chooses 5 books for you to take away. I visited in March before lockdown to see when their next aptmnt was and it was in Nov! I would happily pay for the experience and this video has reminded me to see if they are doing an online service during this time. Thanks for taking us along on your experiment!
That sounds so fun. Just talking with someone about books for an hour sounds great!
Wow that’s such an interesting idea...
Whooooa amazing
it would be so cool if you did a video experiment of judging books by their covers without reading the blurb or anything. like go to a random bookshop or book webpage and just randomly pick books because of the cover and nothing else. to see how well you'd like them.
Is it 2am rn? Yes, Did I realize that Kayla just uploaded this video and I'm disregarding my entire sleep schedule? 100% yes
1am for me and I was about to go to bed, but who cares if it was a 45 min vlog video. Totally watched the whole thing.
When they started their recommendation with Hi Kayla, Here are the specific books we recommended you.. described just as you asked, I'm in awe. This is CURATED. Its hard to code something THAT personalized. That's amazing.
Yeah, I honestly expected something where there was a generic rec for each genre she listed. Instead, it seems genuinely personal
I thought the same! Especially the "it may look like historical fiction, but I promise you, it's not" part made me think that someone tailored everything really specifically to her. Amazing.
how is this a thing and why is this not my current job oof
your username is where I wanna be rn lmao
You should work with a bibliotherapist - they prescribe books, poetry or short stories based on your mental health challenges
...well I learn something new every day. I'd be super curious about this, especially if it related to other mediums like tv shows or movies.
"Also I need to acknowledge that I am a picky bitch" wow what a mood
I'm just gonna sit here and wait for this to blow up and become a trend, and check out booktubers that I have similar taste with, to see their recommendations, so I don't have to spend 15 dollars 🤠
Same
I like your thinking 😊😂
Wow I had no idea they have services like this, that is sooo cool! I hope you do a part two sometime!! I’m so tempted to try this I’m just so curious to see what they’d recommend haha 😅
Please do this vid Gabby!😍
Yes Gabby dooooo it! 😊
DO it DO it gabby
I would totally love another video like this. Maybe next you can be so specific to see if they’d get most of the points. Or less specific.😁
I do wonder if I gave them *really* aggressively specific requests, how well they would do to meet them hahaha
it could be interesting to NOT have new/already popular books, but only classics or "older" books...assuming you would like to read those?
@@BooksandLala I'm a Bibliologist and we do our best! We do get some very specific requests sometimes. If we don't know, we brainstorm together. But we have had to say, "Sorry, I don't think anyone's published that book!" before.
I’m curious if the recommendations get better as your consultant gets to know your taste. Is there a place to submit feedback on the books you received? I think developing a relationship with your book rec consultant in that way would make it way more valuable.
Yes, there is a way to give feedback on the choices. I think that was part of the design.
You can edit your profile so you can let them know if your tastes change, if you're looking for a specific genre, if you liked or hated the recs, etc.
The whole time I was thinking that it must be quite a hard job to be one of the people at TBR recommending books because the pressure to pick right when you’ve never met the person is insane 🤯
A lot of libraries have a service like this. I've loved almost every recommendation I've gotten from them. Some of them even ask for your Goodreads profile to get a better understanding of the books you like/don't like.
Librarians will literally do this for free for you. I would love to see that video! I actually thought that's what this video was.
Ooh, there's also a podcaster who does this! Modern Mrs. Darcy!!! It's a pretty fun podcast if you're interested.
@Taylor Librarians have databases that they can use that segment book data based on genre, themes, subject, authors, publish date, etc. Also most older librarians are in administration, not Reader's Advisory, but obviously it depends on how large your library system is. You could also ask for a Teen Librarian to do your recommendations, if you are looking for YA.
Me: I should go to sleep
Kayla: let me upload yet another INCREDIBLY CREATIVE video RN (1am Houston time)
Me: well now I have no choice, *clicks on video
A milk frother is too small to get the real “whipped” effect because it doesn’t work with enough surface area. (I have one too and used it the first time.) You can use the milk frother for the first half and move to a tradition hand whisk, but it really works, with less human effort, if you have a hand mixer or kitchenaid. (All worth it because that drink is 🔥.)
I was gonna say the same. 👍 Also it can be made with less sugar to make it less sweet if one doesn't like coffee that sweet. 😄
There is a "frappe" mixer which we use to make the exact same coffee in Cyprus and in Greece (we have been doing it for years like this), I'm sure you can find it online :)
I agree that a second video with an “older” books profile and not recent releases might be a lot of fun...
I've been subscribed to TBR for a year and a half (reccs only) and I've really enjoyed it. I feel like the reccs usually are dead on and well currated. I've only read 5/18 of the books reccs (based on availability mostly), and just read the first that was a fail for me, although the recc seemed like it could be a good fit I've also asked for stretch picks, so it was bound to happen.
Oh that's sweet, I'm happy to hear from someone who uses it consistently! Have you had the same curator from the start, or do they ever sub out? /do you have to ask specifically for someone else?
I haven't ever asked for a new one, but my first 2 rounds where the same curator, then my curator switched and we've been together ever since. My original doesn't appear on the list so maybe she's moved on. I'm interested to try a new one out now though! I'll have to look into it.
I would love to see a part 2 to this where you specifically ask for older (but not classics old), obscure and/or very not widely known titles
I find it funny that this coffee is trending so much on TikTok. I am from Cyprus and we have been drinking this exact coffee here and in Greece forever! It's called "Frappe" and we do it in exactly the same way. It's tradition for people in coffee shops to have a frappe with their friends every day 😊 Love your videos by the way, I am a big fan 👏🏽
Yayyyyy that's exactly what I thought! Greek girl here 😄
Guess who just bought a recommendations plan!! This video got me fully intrigued in their service, so I had to try it myself. They should totally sponsor Kayla, cause I am probably not the only one who just bought a plan.
@justsarah you're right, I just bought a plan too.... I have to try it out!!!
Guilty :D
Do you have to suscribe to the service or can you try it as a one-time thing?
YES DO A PART TWO PLEASE
I'd love to see a part 2, with maybe more steps outside of the comfort zone! (Less 'familiarity')
this is the video I didn’t know I wanted. also: damn you’re so gorgeous!!
I think 15$ is totally fair for the service they provide, though I definitely get enough recommendations from Booktube alone, I'd like to try it mostly out of curiosity, for the experience as you said :p
I saw an ad for TBR the other day and then in your live you said the title of this video and I was like IT CAN’T BE
dude, since I filmed this I've seen so many ads for them- I didn't know if it was just me seeing them because I had visited their website and they've always been marketing, or if they just started marketing around the same time
BooksandLala could just be google spying on you 👀
@@SavannaLoren if so someone needs to tell them to start doing prospecting instead of re-marketing and I would've heard of them way sooner haha
I think this could be a really good service for people who aren't avid readers (or not as involved in the book community) because honestly it's hard to find books that fit what you want to read, especially if you don't know where to look, and it takes a lot of filtering out books you have no interest in. So I definitelly think there's a market for this kind of thing because people are willing to pay a fee for someone to do the 'dirty work' for them.
Ooo part 2 if you're willing please! I love videos like this and it was very interesting. Plus I love personally taking quizzes, but don't have the disposable income for this, so its like I can live vicariously through you haha!
I think this is a fabulous service! I personally wouldn’t use it any time soon (not saying I never would), just because I feel like I already have far too many books on my tbr shelves and don’t need to add anymore ideas. But this could be such a fun way to discover new books that aren’t very popular on booktube, yet fit what type of book you may enjoy! :) I think this is such an amazing creative service that is one of a kind in the book world, and I hope it thrives!
I think it's an awesome service for people who aren't necessarily well-versed in the bookish community, might it be BookTube, Bookstagram, etc. and who enjoys reading but aren't "intense" readers. I have tons of friends who don't read as much as we do here in our community, nor do they have the interest of joining because they don't define themselves as avid readers, and they keep asking me for book recs... Especially since March 10th! Also, this type of reader usually goes into a bookstore to get book recs. Now that they can't have that interaction anymore, I really think this service is specifically designed for them! I might even suggest it now to my friends who are looking! I love giving book recs, but I also have my limitations because just like you I have a very specific (weird) reading taste. Great video, as always!
My library does something like this. I think it's like 10 recommendations. If your library does this, it might be interesting to do another vlog 😊
I, too am a big fan of Safiya’s experiments in fashion through the personal shopper services, so I love that you’re bringing that into the booktube side of UA-cam.😊
As a teen whose read "Two Can Keep a Secret" and did not enjoy it, I think it's fair to say it's NOT a great teen mystery 😅
Haha fair enough, my bad- thanks for sharing your thoughts with me friend!
What I’m 23 and I loved it , it’s my favourite but yes I do love pretty little liars ( not for its plot cause that just bad )
I didn’t mind Two Can Keep a Secret but I’ve liked other teen mystery/thrillers better such as People Like Us or Little Monsters.
I read it within a few days of reading Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes and the similarities between the two in terms of the mystery and plot twists made me realize how formulaic it was. So I enjoyed it for what it was, but it wasn’t technically that great
"The gayer the better"
IF THAT AIN'T ME WHEN I'M SHOPPING FOR BOOKS LMAO
If I could have liked this video more than once, I would have. I loved that while you said you wouldn’t use the service again, you gave it so much props. You didn’t slam it and say, “why would someone use this?” You gave credit to the hard working people at the company and gave them credit for starting a cool business. I loved this video because this is what constructive criticism is. Not telling someone they had a bad idea, but saying why it’s a good idea for other people and giving it an honest try. Honestly, furthered my love of your channel and affirmed that you are indeed my favorite booktuber! Great, great video!
Great video! To answer your question at the end, lately I've been looking for more thriller recs and even though we don't always have the same tastes (i.e. I love detective mysteries), your videos/recs are always the most useful for me because you explain very clearly why a book worked or didn't work for you. I've found most people when recommending say just a general thing about the plot or something else, which is useful as well, but you talk about vibes and very specific details and things in the books. That always helps me out a lot because maybe there are like 7 different books on my radar that are all in the same niche BUT you could take any 2 books from that pile and they'll go in totally different directions or ave very different vibes...
Anyhow, that is my long and rambly answer...
Interesting idea. I wouldn't because honestly, picking books is half the fun for me! I could totally go that for a job. Booktube, Goodreads, and Friends tend to be where I get most of my recs, though also occasionally other authors.
This was amazing! When you said that a professional chose your TBR on your live, my first thought was "OMG, she's going to be on the What Should I Read? podcast". Then you said you paid someone and that idea went down the drain. I need to check this out, though. Definitely do a part 2 and maybe change the strictness of the choices to see what they would recommend to you with less restrictions.
"I'm a picky bitch."
*MOOD*
id try it out....but like you said, 'TOO RISKY'. And then, even if i paid for it....would i choose to read them right away?? knowing me, probably not lol
@@ellias yeah if this was not for a video, there's no way in hell I'd end up reading them in a timely matter anyway lol
I had a TBR subscription when it first came out and I really enjoyed it! I love the stuff Book Riot puts out. I chose to go outside my comfort zone and it's how I learned that I liked narrative nonfiction. If I remember correctly, you can go back and rate the books that get recommended to you in order to get better recommendations, so I would definitely be interested in a part 2.
I have ONLY heard of this because I've listened to some of Book Riot's podcasts. They a hunnit percent need to work on marketing.
I discover form thier site book riot
Same! I've only heard about it because I'm on their website often! It's like they only advertise (non-stop) there :P
I don't know why, but this is one of my favorite videos that you have put out so far. I'd be interested in a part two for sure! I'd love to try out this TBR service in the future, but I feel like my reading taste should develop a little more before doing so, as I've only started to enjoy reading since the beginning of last year.
I’m binging all your vids. Even the ones I already watched! And the old ones. 💛
Good job
I loved this Idea! I definitely would love to see a part 2 of this where you fill out a little more thoroughly and be more specific. Maybe an overly specific book recommendation??
Haven't finished the video yet but do you think the fact that you're a booktuber influenced your service? Like, do you think they were more considerate of your request and spent more time/effort than usual because they knew you have a platform and influence in the book community and therefore could have a significant positive or negative impact on their business depending on your review?
I don't think that's the case at all and I really don't think they know who I am or care. If they watched my videos than they would have seen me haul I'm Not Dying with You Tonight, my dislike for One of Us is Lying and most YA thrillers *and* my dislike of espionage and westerns lol- things you might not fully gather from my Goodreads alone. Not knocking the service in any way but I do think they could/would have done better if they had hundreds of videos to pull from.
@@BooksandLala I commented this before I saw what they recommended and, having now finished the vlog, totally agree with you! I'm glad they (seemingly) didn't look up your channel because your review of the overall experience is definitely reflective of what the experience could be like for someone without a platform (and therefore v useful/informative lol). Really enjoyed this vlog btw, it was so interesting - thanks for responding and for always uploading such fab content (-:
@@flavourofyourlips thanks so much friend!! 💗
you could do a part 2 asking for genres you don't like but basically asking them to find you books you may like even tho you're not into that specific genre
I've never heard of a service like this. I decided to sign up for TBR just to see what they recommend for me. Thanks for sharing!
I am Not Dying With you Tonight was really good. I loved that whole book. Listen to it on audio. It is the best.
Yes part 2 please!
Maybe try a book in a genre you don't read much and have them make a recc on the books you love in the other genres.
I LOVE the idea of this service... I think I found my dream job
Ohh, I'd also love to see a follow-up video where you gave them more specific recs or added likes/dislikes - you often say in your videos "this thriller would be good if you're new to the genre, but for me it was predictable/i've seen this 'twist' too many times" so you might includes that you want, like, a 201 adult domestic thriller.
Are you still doing Three Thriller reviews? I would love to hear the spoilery details about the murderer you figured out by page 36, lol!!
yes to continueing this!
My library does personalized book recommendations also.
This was so fun! would you mind if i "recreate" this video as i would love to try and see how accurate i can get it. and it would be fun to document my process :D i'll obviously mention your video! is that alright with you?
Please do, I would love to see the results! You don't need to mention me at all, I snagged this idea from the beauty community lol
This was a great video. Would love a part 2.
I get almost all my recommendations from you. I noticed that whenever there is a polarizing book that you love, I tend to love it too. Wilder Girls is my fav book I've read this year so far!
Part 2, definitely!
So glad I've just found this channel. Please do this again with older books 👍
this is the first video i’ve watched on your channel and I really love how refreshingly honest you were. your stank face when you saw that 3rd book recommendation from that author that you had read already and didn’t like was SOOOO relatable LOL i think i might actually subscribe to this once just for the experience, since i’m such a picky reader.
Yes, a part 2 please! I would like to see you asking for classics this time, to see if they find classics that you could like :)
I’ve seen the cover of that western looking one on GR and just scrolled past but now I’m watching to see what you think 👀👀
I think that this is really cool that there's people who have read enough types of books that can create recommendations. It would be cool to use that service and get very specific to see how they do. I think something this has to be used multiple times to really gauge how well the recommendations are.
Great video. Would love a part 2! 💙
Definitely interested in a part 2! I would be really interested to see if they can send you a "weirder" book like the ones you love and how well they do on Adult Mystery/Thriller since you tend to be pretty well versed in those.
please do a part 2! i think it would be cool to ask for books with traits that you normally wouldn’t read but have good qualities in them to see if they can really dive in and understand your taste.
You are such an amazing soul... I can't describe it somehow but whenever i saw your videos i wish i could know someone like you in my life... But knowing you through youtube is blessing too. And amazing innovative video as always.
I agree with your assessment. This seemed like an interesting experience. I don't think I would try it because I currently have such a huge TBR list and books I am interested in reading.
Part 2 would be awesome! I LOVE these experimental videos.
I tried TBR because of your video and I'm really satisfied with 2 of the recommendations, and the other I'm not so sure about, but I'll see. Since I'm Canadian and couldn't receive the hardcover books they recommended, I looked for a canadian book box company that tailored their books to you and actually found one : The Not Busy Company. If anyone is like me and tired of the typical book boxes, you should definitely try their Time for Reads box. I just received my 1st one today and the books are really something I would have picked for myself but never heard of, and the snacks and tea that come with it look delicious!
I would totally love a part 2! Also bookriot also has lots of podcasts, but my favorite is "get booked" a podcast for personalised reading recommendations, where people send them very specific recommendation requests and they give them from 2-4 suggestions. There are currently over 250 episodes, I think. But I'm still binge-listening to it from the start.
Great video. I think there is value in just filling out the profile even if you never used the service. It makes you really think about your book tastes--what you like or hate to read and why. From watching this it seems like they really gave you what you described and that is so important. You are also so well read that you deserve to be very picky at this point. for someone not so well read but looking for just good book to read it is worthwhile. It would also work for someone to do and then give the recommendations to Amazon wish list or to someone who wants to give you a book gift. I look everywhere for book recommendations and part of the fun of reading is stumbling on a great book almost by accident. Love your videos and we do not have the same reading tastes yet I still find an occasional book that really intrigues me and I love.
oh my god my younger sister ADORES tinker crate boxes haha that's so cool they have such a wide reach
Kayla, just a little note to say thank you. Your content always puts a smile on my face! I LOVE your creativity and playfulness with your content, and also your honesty. Sending love!
Just signed up for this! Even though I ask booksellers and librarians and my friends, etc for recommendations, there's something that feels kind of exciting about knowing someone I never met is reading my profile and looking at my Goodreads to come up with things I might like?? I agree that the experience is fun! And waiting for the email feels like waiting for a present in the mail.
Well I pick books that seem interestung to me by their synopsis or when someone in yhe book community tells me about them and what they are about. Yes Kayla, you made part pf my TBR list and I am thankful!♥️
I’ve subscribed to TBR since the beginning (received 8 recommendation rounds so far). I’m a big fan- I’m amazed at what they do even when I can’t perfectly articulate my current whims and preferences. I’ve had a few bibliologists by now and each one has brought something different to the recommendations. For a comparison, I’ve also tried the Brooklyn Public Library’s BKLYN Bookmatch service and was much less impressed (makes sense since their questionnaire is less involved and they don’t link to goodreads).
I would love a part 2! Also, based on this video, I used the website to get recs. Can't wait to get mine!
Upright Women Wanted sounds right up my street and I am really hoping to be able to get my hands on it soon! Loved this video!
Oohhh you made Dalgona Coffee!! Everyone is obsessed with that right now xD
I love your videos, the amount of different content you post is amazing and really makes my day so much more fun.
This was such a cool idea and service! It would be cool to see you do a part 2 and put in something different in your profile. I know you like anthologies and have a taste for some weird fiction - it would be interesting to see what they pick for those! I also appreciate your commentary on purchasing the service, even though you didn't get a favorite book it sounds like you really enjoyed the experience which makes it money well spent and could be just the thing someone is looking for!
Your video inspired me to try out this service and I got my recommendations/ordered the books today! All 3 were books I've never heard of (All the Birds in the Sky [Charlie Jane Anders], Such a Fun Age [Kiley Reid], The Ten Thousand Doors of January [Alix E. Harrow]) but they all sound great and I can't wait to read them! Thanks for trying out something new and sharing the experience with us!
Your reaction to the coffee. 😂 I was for sure you wouldn’t like it!
Absolutely loved this!! Would definitely like a Part 2 😁
now im really excited for upright women wanted! also the top you're wearing in the last clip is so cuteeee
I love this, this is such a creative way to find new book, and it look so fun, just the idea of having that as a job, looking for book for other, i think that genius and love that concept
I’d love a part two where you maybe get an adult thriller because i know ya mystery just ain’t for you 🤣 also maybe a light fantasy/sci fi like middlegame ! but i’m so glad you read “i’m not dying with you tonight” because i’ve had it on my tbr for a little while but haven’t picked it up because i hadn’t heard much about it! even if it was a middle of a road rating for you i’m glad to hear some thoughts on it. this was such a cool idea, i’m excited to see what you’ll get if you do a part two!
I really enjoyed I’m not dying with you tonight. It is really fast paced and easily finished in a few hours. And like, yeah the characters do make weird choices, but it was awesome to see their conflicting points of view on the same things.
Maybe Speculative Fiction + Fabulism is what you like???
I also found myself thinking you should specify hard-hitting/dark contemporary.
Not quite the same but Dahlia Adler sends hand picked books to one level of her Patreon supporters and now I really want to know what she would recommend to you, but that might be too personal/specific for a video.
This was fun to watch.
Edited to add: Penguin usually does a book recommendation hotline free in December and I would LOVE to see you do another video about that one in (looks at calendar) 7-8 months.
I just recently signed up for this and I can’t wait until I get my recommendations.
