About your thoughts on Usopp, Luffy doesn’t really choose crew members based on their usefulness to the crew. He chooses them based on who they are as a person and how well he gets along with them. To him, whatever they can contribute is just a bonus!
Take even Sanji, for example. Sure he’s a great fighter and cook, but Luffy picked him specifically because he fed a hungry man simply out of the kindness of his heart.
I think it’s really important to keep in mind that Luffy doesn’t think of his crew as means to an end, he thinks of them as family. You wouldn’t choose your friends or family based off of what they can bring to the table, you pick them because you enjoy being around them!

They changed a lot of stuff in the liveaction, and fans (me including) had mixed feelings about it, but watching reactions of newcomers like you guys have really made me appreciate the liveaction for what it is.
For instance, Luffy's storyline with him doubting himself never happened (it happens a lot later), and zoro's vow of loyalty was basically what he says in episode 5 after his fight with mihawk, but new dialogues were added in this episode. Luffy is also overpowered at this point in the original manga so that fight and loss with arlong never occurred either. But these are the parts which made this episode better, initially I was doubting why we even needed another adaption when the manga and anime exists but the changes makes it feel not necessarily better but very fresh and fun for me.

The fish people are one of the groups that were done dirty by humans in the anime, but most fish people just don't trust humans and stay from them as much as possible. Arlong is a total A-hole of a character that justifies what he does by what was done to his people. The story of Nami's connection to him is heartbreaking which is why I enjoyed the fight between Arlong and Luffy later. Arlong needed a major butt whipping. This is the point where I go into fanboy mode, since part of me can't fully separate what they changed from the original series when it comes to Sanji. At the very least his backstory is perfectly preserved, it's just as harsh and brutal as it was in the manga (the anime changes how Zeff loses his leg, from him eating it to him losing it while being stuck underwater with Sanji). Hell, dare I say it was the first time watching the Netflix show that I actually cried, specifically the part where Zeff confesses why he saved Sanji. Everything else about Sanji's character, up to and including actually going with Luffy, is either glossed over or non-existent. Because they had to cut back on stuff in order to fit in Garp's scenes and stay within 8 episodes, Sanji's main motivation for leaving the Baratie gets overlooked. In the manga/anime, Sanji doesn't fully understand what it means to commit your life to dream; this is why seeing Zoro take the final hit from Mihawk (yeah, he was actually present for that in the manga/anime, not so in the Netflix show) and seeing Luffy repeatedly assert how he's going to be King of the Pirates while standing up to Don Krieg's attacks (who was reduced to little more than a cameo in the Netflix show) were so important, Sanji is seeing what it means to truly go after a dream to the point of putting your life on the line for it. This is also why Zeff had been subtly trying to push Sanji out of the Baratie, because Zeff wants Sanji to follow his dreams as opposed to staying there out of the feeling that he owes Zeff for what he did for Sanji. This all gets removed, and Sanji joining the Straw Hat Crew feels almost like an afterthought, like Sanji gets into an argument with Zeff over not being able to cook what he wants and saying "hey, chore boy gave me a job offer, why don't I join him?" (which by the way, Luffy pays off his debt to Zeff by defeating Don Krieg, who was trying to take over the restaurant, in the manga/anime, but in the Netflix show Luffy just leaves and Zeff's fine with it for whatever reason). They DO keep some of Zeff's attempting to push Sanji out to follow his dreams, though again, because of how condensed this arc is, Zeff has to ditch the subtlety and outright tell Sanji to not waste his time in the Baratie and actually go after his dreams. Sanji and Zeff's final good-bye, while it also managed to get me misty-eyed, also was done much better in the manga/anime, because again, they had more time dedicated to it. I suppose what the Netflix show does is fine for people unfamiliar with the source material, but as someone who is, it's a big step down and easily the worst aspect of the live action adaptation for me.
As for Arlong, he actually doesn't show up until the arc after this, and Nami being revealed to be working for him isn't revealed until that arc, but I suppose I don't have much of an issue moving stuff around like this. I will say, though, it's an interesting choice to bring the racism against and past enslavement of the fishmen to the forefront of Arlong's character here. In the original manga/anime, Arlong just gloated about how superior fishmen are to humans, and the history of fishmen and how human society tends to view them wasn't brought up until much, much later in the manga (noticing a trend here, with this show bringing up stuff earlier than it was in the manga/anime?); it also helps justify why there's a fishman working at the Baratie, to give Arlong a reason to rant about this topic. I'm also not sure how I feel about Luffy fighting Arlong here, some people take issue with it, but I guess I'm ultimately fine with it. I DO love that they're using Buggy as a means to track down Luffy, and that Buggy uses his Chop-Chop Fruit powers in a way we don't actually see in the manga or anime (that I know of). I love Buggy, and I'm always glad to see more of him.
Also... Yeah, Nami, the person who despises pirates above all else, is part of the Arlong Pirates. DEFINITELY setting up some massive intrigue with this, and the fact that Luffy has such faith in Nami that he refuses to believe it even when Nami himself tells him this is a good show of how Luffy can tell something is not right with this set-up... either that, or he's just really stubborn or in denial. Either way, it's good enough reason to go after Nami and figure out what's going on with her!
Other things: that fish skin trick is a legitimate as it turns out (The More You Know!), Mihawk telling Garp that he decided to see where Luffy (and Zoro) will go from here and letting him go is very much in-character for him, as is him telling Garp that he'd basically be doing whatever he wants with or without his Warlord status, Garp is... well, again, I'll save my thoughts on him at the finale, but for now, that one line of him saying "I went too easy on him" when talking about how he let Luffy become a pirate is kind of disturbing, especially knowing what he put Luffy through in the manga/anime. As for poor Usopp, yeah, he's a cowardly wimp, and while that has always been the case in the anime/manga, he doesn't get many moments to shine in the Netflix show. I'll have more to say about Usopp by the season finale.

In the manga and anime, Usopp did get more shine during the Syrup Village arc. Usopp is a character who will make excuses and show his fear, but when all the chips are down, he will put himself at risk to protect the people he cares about. I wish they showed that more during his arc. They did show it off more in the anime. Overall, they had to cut a ton of content in episodes 3 and 4 because of how they gave more time to Kaya and Koby, so there were some character moments that would have been better if they had a few more episodes. In the anime, that arc took 10 episodes, so you can imagine how much stuff had to get cut.

He was still the strongest out of anyone in East Blue, hence his confidence

Usopp is meant to be the everyman, he doesn't have any special powers, he doesn't have any insane training, he's just a guy who's afraid because he's in a world with devil fruits and fish men and sea beasts. His growth is slow, and human, and realistic - but it's there.

When y’all find out why the fish men hate humans you’ll be shook but you still need a lot more context as far as who the marines are connected to.

You need to know something about Arlong. Eastblue Sea is the most weakest and Arlong can't be a so called "king" in the grandline, so he went to the weakest sea and reign supreme. But one day you will also know why Fishmen hated humans when they entered the Grandline. It's sad man..

After we see Sanji's backstory, "never waste food" hits really really hard.
A lesson you can and should really apply in real life too

15:36 yep, just being submerged, but since Arlong is a fishman, his water techniques are so strong it can kill anyone
