      @@natehall2741 what I did was run at a speed you're comfortable with for about 5 minutes and then crank it to a speed you can just barely maintain without getting winded and you time how long you can run at this top speed. The next time you run; repeat as previously except force yourself to hold that top speed even longer. My top speed is about 9 MPH and by doing what I described; I can run at my top speed for half an hour, consistently

  • @viatori5566
    @viatori5566 Рік тому +29

    Start with the long slow runs. You don't need to worry about speed until you've been running for 6 -12 months. Unless you're already athletic and have a good foundation, you are just going to hurt yourself. If you're trying to get into sf without a base in like 3 months, you're doing it wrong. Give yourself a couple of years and do it right. These are lifetime habits, not quick fixes to a current problem.

    • @SOFPrepCoach
      @SOFPrepCoach  Рік тому +8

      I agree with titrating up volume and starting slow. That said, I don’t agree with avoiding speed work the first 6-12 months unless someone is severely obese

    • @viatori5566
      @viatori5566 Рік тому +1

      @sofprepguy you're probably right on that for most people. I've done quite a bit of running and lifting in my life, and the thing that always gets me is doing too much too soon.
      My muscles and cardio are fine, but my joints and tendons always fall apart. Speed work has almost always ended up with me getting injured. 🤷

    • @kola9294
      @kola9294 7 місяців тому +1

      The only reason for 6-12 months is because most people will run on concrete- which will absolutely destroy your shins if you’re doing intense work; make sure to do your stretches and if you do get shin splints, Ice them and go a little softer on your workouts. If you get bad enough shin splits you can actually break your shin bones - not fun

      The most logical way is to start by walking long distances and running short sprints and then try to close the gap between the two.

    • @viatori5566
      @viatori5566 3 місяці тому

      @@erikmielke9008 you should not be sprinting when you start running. You will improve just as much with slow runs in the beginning and won't be adding all the extra stress on your joints and ligaments.
