- Today we're building Zorro for D&D 5e! If you want to be the coolest, sword swingingest, cape wearingest player in your party, this is the build for you. With speed and finesse, this build excels at making all your DM's monsters look silly, while you look pretty darn cool.

Turlok: 'what's the Spanish word for fox?'
Me: *looks it up*
Me: *realizing it's Zorro and feeling like a idiot*
@@ShankMugen whait, that exists?
@@ShankMugen Oh...Ok, thanks
@@ShankMugen There was a cartoon version of Zorro in the 1970's by Filmation. That's what I grew up on.
Bomberman it’s such a good show.
I just did exactly this.
"19th Century Fox" How. How you do these titles EVERY. DAMN. TIME.
Batman creator... BILL FINGER
*Knowing Nod of Respect*
I know what's up
*When calligraphy is actually thematic and possibly useful, how else are you going to succeed at leaving a perfect 'z' in the clothes or skin of those you leave behind*
Jared Carter thematic , yeah, but it’s ALWAYS useful. The pen is mightier than the sword, and dnd swords are crazy so dnd pens must be straight up BROKEN
Some things I've learnt from Tulok:
-All characters are adaptable to the DnD format if you're clever enough
-Making a character with an idea of what you want him/her/it to end up as makes for way better builds
-CALLIGRAPHY IS THE BEST TOOL PROFICIENCY IN THE GAME
I aim to educate the people
Out of the loop but how is calligraphy the best skill? Legitimately asking.
It's all about how you dot your 'i's and cross your 't's
@@jaspergardner-medwin1723 So...is this an inside joke where calligraphy isn't really all that useful and Tulok just likes joking that it is, or does calligraphy does have an extensive amount of hidden uses? I'm autistic so I have a hard time detecting sarcasm and understanding hidden meanings in words, especially since I have little experience with Tulok's content outside of his character builds since I believe he streams DnD, wher I would imagine the calligraphy joke originated.
@@angeryfluuf6514 it's an inside joke, yes. Sorry I didn't respond seriously the first time, I tend to joke a lot. I'm actually not sure where the joke originated but whenever calligraphy tools come into a build Tulok usually jokes about it. Happy adventuring ;)
Dude I love swashbuckling characters. I'm glad that they've became viable on 5e
It's a really fun subclass
Point of order: the UA update that had the fighting style you mentioned also says ANY weapon a monk is proficiant in that is not heavy/special, so rapier can be their monk weapon.
Sick, missed that.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 lol, I have been itching to make the ultimate fencer built almost exactly like this and I love monks to pieces, so I may have been overjoyed at that adjustment.
Ok, but which UA is this? I looked it up and couldn't find it
@@barakaberry2 the class adjustments one, the same one that had all the new fighting styles. Just before the psionic subclasses.
Thx!

I just died and went to heaven.
You're a miracle worker! I was just thinking it would be cool if something like this existed
I can't access them. :C
I’m surprised there wasn’t a dip into swords bard, due to how in character flourishes are
Thumbs up.
However!
It does require three levels of Bard and that would give Zorro spellcasting... which is a bit out of character.
Also vicious mockery which is perfect
Probably just because Zorro doesn’t cast spells so all that mechanical stuff is superfluous to the build?
I love sword bard but it’s not really Zorro. He’s very much a mundane swashbuckling fighter type.
Oh that would gel really well wish swashbuckler
@@studynot757 eh you, could just not use the spells
I love the mention of Tabaxi there, thank you for this.
I officially love this build, and it is probably my favorite to date. Now, I have to go watch Zorro.
Low key, my favorite part of making this was just rewatching Zorro
Honestly, the only Zorro movie I’ve seen was the 1940 version in my film class a couple months ago. I’m happy to see him as a build though.
*Intro song isn’t livin vida loca or desperado*
Nooo all that flavor lost, cool build tho
Willy Styles not doing it for you?
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 Im sure its good for ZARRO, but for the fox, so cunning and free, who marks his name with a Z...no
Yes, any Superiority Dice gets buffed when a BattleMaster's gets boosted. The feat basically gives you one without investing into BattleMaster or makes BM's better.
Frankenstein’s Monster
Mulan
Those would both be cool builds.
YES. PLEASE.
Frankenstein himself? Maybe Doctor Jekyll?
@@remingtonwright6796 Frankenstein himself would probably just be a necromancer.
Necromancer/Alchemist. He doesnt do magic, just science!
@@jasonsilvernail1450 but sadly, in his time, science was considered witchcraft/black magic
Actually with the unearthed arcana for monk weapons I think you can have a rapier as a monk weapon
Oh snap, that's pretty good
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 Technically even without an Arcana, Kensei can do that.
@Grim reaper Not sure if the errata came out, but looking at my standard PH, it specifies unarmed, short swords and any simple melee weapon without the Two Handed or Heavy property.
Aside, that technically means Darts and other simple ranged weapons are not technically Monk weapons so they don't benefit from Martial Arts (So you can't throw a Dart and make an unarmed attack with that Monk Feature, though Two Weapon Fighting might still work), but Monk weapons with the thrown property (daggers, handaxes, javelins, light hammers, and spears) are technically fair game.
I once failed a calligraphy skill, that castle was never seen again.
Thank you for saying Bill Finger instead of Bob Kane. My amount of respect for you just tripled.
Hey Tulok, how about a Classic Battlemaster build, King Leonidas? It would be simple but still very effective
THIS. IS. a pretty good suggestion, its fictional enough I think.
Throw in some levels in Barbarian too for the unarmored defense cause in the movie he didn’t have any form of armor other than a shield.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 How about making Saber from F/SN ^.^ or... Gilgamesh if even humanly possible? Side note: Yes, the Superiority Die from Martial Adept and the UA Fighting Style do scale with Battlemaster iirc, I've used it before (based on Source Material/D&D Beyond/Fifth Edition Character Sheet {Android/iOS App}).
Well I know who's replacing my favorite build when he makes that video.
@kerubin Lancelot (Berserker) fate/zero. "Aaar...thuuurrr"
I suggested this. I’m extremely happy. This made my whole day. Thank you.
Yesssss!! You finally did it! I’ve been waiting for this since I asked for zorro to be in the polls
I recently subscribed to your channel, and you don’t disappoint! These builds are truly a joy to see and it really shows how much effort you put into the script and video!
I’d really love to see a Vash the Stampede from Trigun build.
Imagine the dexterity and luck!
Not familiar, but I can look into it!
finally, a character thats almost as charming as you
i couldn't think of anything im sorry
My friend, Antonio Banderas is leaps and bounds more charming, which isn't me putting myself down, just game respecting game
Another great video. Now time to do Arnold Schwarzenegger 1984 Conan the Barbarian. 😉. You can do it for my birthday coming up in Jan.
Thanks to your channel I learned how to make Cloak from marvel in 5e. Keep up the good work dude
Sneak Attack is actually once per turn. You can trigger it again in the same round on opportunity attacks, or any attack you can make on another creatures turn.
Just watching Zorro in the background and god, I love the swashbuckling genre
I love you man. I’m home sick today. Know what I’m watching.
Tiny little thing, Defensive Duelist does not have the stipulation of your second hand needing to be free to use it, you can still Dual Wield with Defensive Duelist. It's only the Duelist Fighting Style that has that stipulation, and Jeremy Crawford confirmed in his Sage Advice Compendium that the Duelist FS does still work if you have a Shield in your second hand, you just can't have another weapon, which was the RAI of the FS.
In regards to Sneak Attack, the limit is ONCE PER TURN. While this does mean that it can't pair with Extra Attack, Sneak Attack does also activate on Opportunity Attacks even if you already used it on YOUR TURN.
Had a dream tulok made the Lich King. It was good. Woke up to check if my dream was a reality, sadly it was not. I cried in the shower.
Hey, showering is good at least...
I did this build a while back. Didn't consider Monk. Good job.
Superior Technique works similarly to the Martial Adept feat, which adds an additional superiority die to your pool if you already have them, or gain them later, so yes, it would upgrade to match the superiority dice from Battle Master.
The errata from the Martial Adept feat states that the die is added to any others you have, no matter when you gain them.
Yknow, I was watching Kids Next Door earlier and thought a Father build would be silly. Good build, by the way.
The whip being made as a finesse weapon and the swashbuckler subclass, were made into D&D with the Zorro in mind.
I know you love interesting characters to write about, so here are 3 suggestions. First , Pizza the hutt from the movie spaceballs. He's a second string billion and a product placement ad and how he dies will make him unforgettable. Secondly, with the Animamac reboot coming up, now might be the time to do the Brain. Lastly we have Rider from Paw Patrol. A definite artifice/druid if there ever was one.
2:30 , Aim is any attack roll, not just a ranged attack. 5:46 , Superior Technique is worded in the same way the Martial Adept feat is so it becomes a D8 when you become a battle master.
I got a few more recommendations:
1) Captain Planet
2) Ladybug and/or Cat Noir (Miraculous Ladybug; or any of the other Miraculous Heroes of choice)
3) [DC's] Captain Marvel/Shazam
4) Cole McGraff (Infamous)
5) Mewtwo (Pokemon; because Arceus would be too powerful and I don't think D&D has a quadropad PR)
Actually they do, but you would have six limbs if you took it cx
Eon Ember well, I’m kinda curious.
@@ThatRandomEncounterGuy its from GGR the centaur is equine human hybrid. So... You cant climb too well
The only other one i can think of is from GGR as well in the simic hybrids where its possible but highly dificult
That build was lots of fun! I really like Zorro. I’d love to see Shield Hero, mostly because fighting in unconventional ways is fun!
So glad to see this build. I cosplay Zorro every year!
Now that Tasha's Cauldron allows for Monks to treat a rapier as Monk Weapon, you could actually go for the old stab-then-punch with that 1 level dip. Slashing and then smacking somebody with the hilt of his rapier seems like a very Zorro move.
Sun Wukong the inspiration for Son Goku would be cool for a D&D character. You can even pick the one from Smite or League of Legends xD
My big takeaway from Frozen 2 is that Elsa would be an amazingly fun character to play in DND. So many options with ice powers. I'd love to see your take on an Elsa build.
Let it go...
You can only use Sneak Attack once per TURN. If you somehow get another attack during the same round, you can still get that sweet sneak damage even if you already used it on your turn. This was actually confirmed by Jeremy Crawford himself and can be found in Sage Advice.
Krieg for life bro. Can we see an Eren Jaeger build, I'm pretty interested in that
Oooooh I should get on that Attack on Titan, one of the only anime I had seen before starting the channel
@apachewarrior7 same diff, you know what I mean
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 oooh, if you somehow do drunken Master to him you could say he's drunk on Jaegar
@apachewarrior7 yeah, you were correcting me and I said same difference
@apachewarrior7 oooh, sorry. I thought u ment something else
I love swashbuckling too, so I approve of this build.
Its THE best
Good build as always. I would have thought about adding a little ranger to get a horse beast companion to have someone to drink with but I think this would work better tbh. Can’t wait for Wednesday’s!
Thursday, unless your across the dateline maybe?
Shoot, I didn’t realize I put the wrong day. Been trying to think of how to take down a Death Tyrant in a campaign I’m in and am a bit distracted because of it
Aim is NOT limited to ranged attacks. It's any attack as long as you don't move on that turn. ALSO the Class Feature Variant UA allows monk to define their Monk Weapons as long as they are proficient with them and aren't heavy or two handed.
I think I'd do the monk dip earlier to get that unarmored defense and good punchies early on, but that's just me.
And hmm, for the poll. Those are all some good choices! You know that normally I prefer BIG PERSON DO BIG SMACK but I really don't want to ride a meat bicycle so I think I'll vote for the *coolest* option.
Cunning action just applies to the next attack roll, doesn't have to be ranged. It's honestly amazing if you're playing a rogue charater that'd stand their ground.
Monk 1 if you forgot the new unearth arcana the monk weapons are 5+Wis (minimum 5). They can be simple or martial weapons that lack the special, two handed and heavy stat. Meaning whips and rapiers can be monk weapons with that unearth arcana the same one you got that fighting style from. Meaning 3 attacks baby!
Zorro: Swashbuckler Rogue
Cyrano de Bergerac: College of Swords Bard
Something something big nose joke.
Oh please do Krieg, that'd be amazing! Rushing into melee while on fire sounds like so much fun :)
with the monk, you can choose the kensei monk mayhaps if it lets you, which allows ou to choose a martial weapon as your monk weapon
and given his rigorous training as a martial artist, its not that far off.
One character I just thought would be interesting would be Metallia the "Swamp Witch" from The Witch and the Hundred Knight using some of the "Circle of the Spore" Druid option and maybe something to summon the Hundred Knight with in the mix.
Thanks to the new UA, you could actually make whips monk weapons. When you become a monk, you can pick a number of weapons you're proficient with that aren't two-handed or special equal to 5 + your WIS modifier instead of just all simple weapons + shortswords. So not only could you use a whip, you could use a rapier too!
Swashbuckler is my favorite subclass too.
I believe Sauron would be an awesome concept for D&D
Random idea, try making the Big Headed Menace himself, The Mask
Hmmm.... Someone watched the newest DeathBattle yes?
Forgot he's going to be in it, but more so the fact you got a character that breaks the rules, not sure if it's possible, but one way to find out
@@Valnanailo Indeed the only way to find out is to try. Though honestly with D&D I'm sure anything is nearly possible if you apply the right Flavor.
Edit: Or just amaze your DM with your brain power. I know as a DM I've been known to allow some of the most interesting things simply because my players dared to ask the question "What if?" or "Could I?" In fact my main player right now repeated wows me with brilliant ideas I couldn't possibly anticipate. Mad props to him.
True as to any dish, need some personal flavoring to the meal
I know you probably wouldn’t want to do Mystics, but I’d be really interested to see you do a full Order of the Avatar build for Ness or Lucas. In-game they’re both super tanky AND powerful healers… and, well, they’re psychics.
Awesome job on this! Would love to see you try and build All Might from My Hero Academia :)
Guessing before I watch.
Varient human obviously, with I'm going to say magic intimate to get vicious mockery and a couple other spells, since Zorro is quick to quip but not enough of team play to be a bard, even if college of swords is tempting.
I'm going to take a crack and say this will be a combination between a rogue swashbuckler and a Fighter battoemaster. That'll get you the need skills and expertise while also letting you be a master with a sword with parrys and what not.
#CalledIt!
I would love to see a build about Styx from
shards of darkness, Master of Shadows and of orcs and men.
That would be so much fun. Styx is such a great character, so tragic.
You should do the boondocks saints. Watching the movie now while I watch this. So much fun.
Weekly Character Build Request: I've been rewatching Black Lagoon recently and would absolutely love to see a Character Build video for Revy. She would be an amazing character to play as.
As for a build, my first guess would be Assassin Rogue (12), Sharpshooter Fighter (6), and Barbarian (2). She goes into a zone when fighting and I'm choosing to gameify that as Rage.
Puss in Boots joke is fantastic. I like how you're incorporating the complaints about variant human builds. This does indeed sound like Zorro; terrific sword fighting, daring escapes, oozing charisma. Even the low HP and non-magical damage fits with his image in his own canon.
I'd LOVE to see a Predator Build! maybe Artificer Artillerist/ranger?
Hey tulok, love ypur stuff man. I have a few build ideas for you. If ya wouldn't mind hearing them out.
Himito toga(my hero academia)
Nightwing(DC comics)
Krieg(borderlands 2)
Jack the ripper(he is actually factual but playing a chaotic evil psychopath would be fun to try and do to mess with the dm)
T1000 (terminator)
Isaac(golden sun)
Maybe even throw in Greek/roman heros such as persius, or Apollo(before he became a god)
If you all have any extra ideas lets spam him witj them
This is an amazing build despite Zorro's low health. I've voted in your poll and, I was wondering if you would eventually think of making a character for a real genasi (sorry, Genie) in everyone's favorite half-genie hero, Shantae. (This is so we get more genasi representation, indie representation, and because I already have ideas for her, somewhat inspired by the Bayonetta build.)
I've been meaning to play Shantae! We'll see!
Her stats would look something like this using the point array (roll if you wish, just keep dexterity and charisma in mind).
DEX: 15 (You're a belly dancer, so you must be limber, plus since you attack with your hair, we need a way for you to attack without needing a neck-brace afterwords)
CHR: 14 (Shantae is a very charming character, and she needs this for her spellcasting)
CON: 13 (Risky isn't going to stop a fight just because you can't catch your breath, not even, and especially not even in an active volcano)
STR: 12 (we need it for necessary multiclassing)
WIS: 10 (I know it's low, you might be descended from a genie, but you befriended your own nemesis and some flesh-eating zombies)
INT: 8 (your uncle is the inventor, not you, so I don't think we'll need it)
I'm sure it's on a list you have somewhere, or maybe you're waiting until the Netflix series premieres (y'know, for synergy?), but I would love your version of Geralt from the Witcher series. Loving your videos! Keep up the great work!
I can't wait to see the Rising of the Shield Hero build
I will admit when I first saw the name Zorro and swordsman I was thinking the green haired character from One Piece and speaking of Anime eventually you will have to add in Master Roshi
This build is Inigo Montoya in disquise
Zorro is way more Old School than, Inigo as much as I love him. Though I think the real OG is The Scarlet Pimpernel or maybe D'Artagnan
.
I honestly feel like the best background for Zorro is the Folk Hero
Based on 1940’s The Mark of Zorro, Diego de la Vega is also a skilled thief and enjoys doing slight of hand magic, so that proficiency goes without saying
Now we need the other Antonio Banderas "man in black" El Mariachi.
Seems like a rad build. I've been trying to think of a claire build from claymore or either terra from ff vi.
Ah, I miss my 3.5 Swashbuckler....
RIP.
Love this build
Krieg is my favorite Borderlands character, so he gets my vote. So tempting to vote Mr. Freeze though.
(And if I may say, should you ever get around to Victor, you should use the Snow Miser song)
Noted.
I know you made Bowser recently, but giving King Dedede a shot would be super cool, too. Just a thought, or however that goes.
aaaaah that's amazing
It's one of my favorites. Battle Master and Swashbuckler are both so fun
Please keep up the Nintendo villain train and make Ridley! I need my big terrifying player character dragon build!!!!
Eventually I want to do the whole Smash Roster, so itll happen. Eventually
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 "welcome to episode 200 and we're finally getting to Terry Bogard" XD nah but for real thats awesome! Take your time on that! (Holy butts that means Captain Falcon build eventually.....YESSS!!!)
this is a fantastic video
I actually played a Zorro style character in a series of one offs. He was: THE DARK DAPPER DERVISH!
Basically the weak son of a family of knights that fought skillfully but only in a mask so he could get away with all kinds of shenanigans. Charged by sliding down railings, dragged a duel onto a chandelier(autocorrect wanted that as cheerleader!) then dropped it on the guys below, basically played like the smoothest bastard in the room. Unfortunately I played him as an investigative instead using the fact that I notice everything to get terrain bonuses and sniff out crimes. coupled with smart fighting to make duels against me a BAD IDEA.
At AL I used to play a halfelf swashbucler / sword college bard, pretty similar to zorro
Yes, the Superiority dice increase no matter what source they were originally applied, I say this with the confidence of knowing that at tenth level, Improved Superiority Dice states "Your Superiority dice increase to 10s", and not "Your Superiority dice gained with this class increases to 10s".
*sees the thumbnail and title of video* oh shit, Morgana from Persona 5 is gonna be happy
When everybody voted for Zorro they thought it was Zoro from One Piece.
Maybe.
Nope. I wanted this Zorro
This was me
Whoops
I'm not sure if you've watched 7 Deadly Sins. But, I think it would be awe if you did a How to play Escanor in D&D video!
Could you please do Percedal from Wakfu? For him I'm thinking hexblade warlock but I want to see what you build.
My top three requests:
Monkey D Luffy - One Piece
Rick - Rick & Morty
Gandalf- LoTR
me: *reflavors this to be V, from V for vendetta because I feel this would be basically the same*
Austin Wells Just swap out the rapier for daggers and put a greater emphasis on them being thrown
@@fightingfalcon777 except if you remember he did use a raiper like sword, and there is nothing saying you cant do both. like in another campaign I am in, I can use my bonus action to use my off hand weapon, and I can use it as a thrown dagger, and so because of that, and since most of my DMs dont allow UA, I will take two weapon fighting instead of the tatics thing
...I could see it working that way. Also, probably Inigo Montoya.
@@justinweber4977 swash buckler fighter, the way to play every charismatic fighter with fast paced movement
Anyone besides me find it even funnier with the Tabaxi Puss in Boots reference given the actor being shown.
I know always grabbing calligraphy is the hot meme, but Zorro actually could use it to draw the best looking Z’s possible.
Jekyll and Hyde? Monte-Cristo? Count Dracula? Erik, the Phantom of the Opera?
I'd say swap Intellegence for Constitution just to get slightly more leeway with your HP. Although its probably mitigated anyway if you roll well enough.
Otherwise though, love the build.
the one thing that can always overcome the mom magical resistance thing is silver. add some silver to your sword and whip and that is taken care of. also for better attacks use less monk
For sure, most DMs give martial characters a magical weapon at some point
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 yea its just with zoro silver would make more story sense sense he is suppose to be rich and magic weapons do not play a big part in his stories
I can’t wait for a FrankCastle Punisher build UwU
Do Westley/The Man in Black/Dread Pirate Roberts from Princess Bride.
Would he be a dex build or a constitution build?
totally would get a sentient cat telling me to go to sleep with that build
(low hanging fruit i know)
