Over 52 years of Acute Zipperphobia, I think I can really do this. BRING ME A ZIPPER!!! I’m going to sew me a skirt. Thank you so much.

      Hello Gretchen,
My wife wanted some face masks, and she found a video tutorial. She had never used a sewing machine, and didn't have time. So she talked me into the honours. I didn't know either.
But I watched the instructional video that came with the machine, and practiced the basic operation.
Then, with a lot of frustrated effort, I managed to sew a face mask.
My wife was thrilled after I had completed a few. And she said, "Now you can make me a skirt!"
It was overly ambitious, and not serious.
But tonight I found your video, and found it very interesting and enjoyable to watch.
I think I can actually do this. And it is because you showed what you were doing. You also did not let your hand get in the way between the camera and the sewing needle and foot.
What's more, a couple problems I was having you did take a moment to explain, as they are common beginner problems. For example, the needle getting unthreaded. That is so frustrating, and you explained it.
On a side note, my daughter would greatly appreciate your 40's and 50's fashion.

As a complete beginner, having only last month learned how to operate a sewing machine, my wife ecstatically said, "Now make me a skirt!"
I searched youtube, and found this video, along with some other sewing tutorials of Gretchen's.
And using an old, but clean bedsheet, I successfully made the skirt described here.
I made a few learning mistakes, as this one was only intended to be a first time attempt.
I had the zigzag gathering and dental floss too low, and not entirely within the seam allowance. This was a bad mistake. It really has to be entirely north of the seam.
For gathering, I chalk marked the waistband in equal eighths, and did likewise with the skirt seam. Then i pinned on the eights. This made it much easier to spread the gathers evenly.
On the short end of the waistband, I forgot to leave the full 5/8" east of the zipper center, so when I cropped that end of the waistband, the zipper didn't fit.
Despite my best efforts to align the waistband, and pinned it, the inner side of the waistband came out north of the outside, and the top stitching missed it. So I had some inner gaps in the waistband.
Likewise, on the overlap end of the waistband, I missed allowing the full 1 5/8" clearance when pinning the gathers, so when I cropped that end, I barely had an inch to reach the other end for the hook and eye.
A couple times when sewing the waistband, I caught other parts of the skirt, and had to stop and work with the seam ripper.
In fact, the first time I sewed the gathers onto the waistband, I forgot to ensure the waistband was lying flat against my right hand feeding the machine, and accidentally sewed about twelve inches of the waistband together. And that was half an hour picking at it with the seam ripper.
But this is why you try it for the first time with an old bedsheet. Next time I will do better.

I will stop sewing the waistband and turn it around so the skirt is on the left side of opening. That way I know underside fabric is not accidentally being drawn into the needle.

For you novice seamstresses out there: I would recommend lightly pressing the fabric before laying pattern pieces and cutting. The folds can sometimes cause the cut pieces to be uneven because they didn't lay flat while cutting. I have always pressed out any folds or wrinkles before laying out patterns and cutting. It's a LITTLE (short) step that results in BIG (great) results.

Or depending on the fabric, you lay it down and smooth it out and lay out the pattern pieces and weight it down with rocks, crystals, books, or sewing weights. It saves the paper from lots of holes making them last longer and you can use them more, save time pinning, and it keeps the fabric smoother for cutting evenly

My mother and grandmothers taught me to sew when I was about 12. Ive been sewing ever since. Lets just say for a very long time! So, Im old enough to be your mother. LOL I wanted to say what a wonderful job you did with this video. I had it playing in the background as I made masks for you daughter and son -in-law that live in NYC. You did a wonderful job of explaining how each part of this project comes together. I also wanted to tell you, I lost on of my best friends in February to Cancer. We both LOVED to sew. One of our last conversations was about sewing and she teased me about my lack of pressing during a project. I laughed and shed a tear as you spoke of the importance of pressing as you go. I will definitely Subscribe. God Bless and keep up the good work.

Your wonderful video auto-played after one of the how-to-make a mask videos. Amazing, this video is great because you explain things in utter simplicity without being monotonous nor condescending. The length of my projects usually come in the mental preparation as opposed to the actual doing. You helped me to set true planning guidelines and I’m very happy to be your student :-D

This is very informative. I always wondered how my Great Grand Mother made her patterns. she never bought a store pattern. she kept the patterns with a name on them in a file envelope. My Grand Mother showed me how to follow a store pattern. I used a store pattern most of my life until they became multi-patterns and cost too much. Now I am back to making my patterns again. I have been using parchment paper for my patterns. Thank you very much. I like the idea of the quarter inch hem line, but I still sew on lace for my hems. I sew on the lace after turning under the quarter inch, then hem by hand. I also sew my name tag into the side seam at the bottom of the garment.

This is probably THE most helpful tutorial I have ever watched! You're so informative and explain the instructions so eloquently and patiently! Thank you so much, Gretchen! I haven't come across a video until now where the instructor shows every step and it's so frustrating when people skip over seemingly 'simple' steps, especially as a complete new beginner where I have no idea how to do any of it! I'm excited to try this!

Love this! Thank you for being so detailed! For someone who is completely new to sewing- your instructions were super helpful and the next best thing to having an in-person sewing class. A lot tutorial claim to be for beginners- but often gloss over details that are completely unknown and new to someone who has no sewing experience.

If you have ever wanted to learn to sew a skirt, I highly recommend this video. Don't let her blue hair scare you. She will teach you how to make a skirt from start to finish in a little over two hours, including cutting your own pattern. Unlike other videos that demonstrate the steps then pull out a finished piece to move to the next step, she completes every step and explains everything. She definitely makes garment sewing less daunting. I'm planning to rewatch it and follow along to make my own skirt, pausing and rewinding as needed.

Yes, I agree. I did manage to 'hear' Gertie most of the time as I am quite proficient at lip reading because I have no hearing at all but subtitles (I'm in the UK) would have made the video even more enjoyable if that is possible! The times when Gertie was speaking, well (when I assume she was speaking) but not facing the camera does pose a problem though I was able to understand the context by what she was doing. However, I am an experienced dressmaker but I am sure it would be impossible for a deaf beginner.
