I don't have many Trachycarpus varieties in my Garden due to them not being available here. But my favorite in my garden is Trachycarpus martianus 'khasia hills' variety. Followed by Trachycarpus oreophilus and then Trachycarpus takil.
Just shows how variable Trachycarpus can be kris....As you know I grow lots of species and some in comparison to your have preformed differently. My large fortunii which i bought off nigel 8 years ago in a 10lt pot has reached well over 10ft in thunk hight.....Where's 2 of my others bought at a similar time have only a 5ft and 3ft respectively, although unbeknown to me they where separate plants in the same pot, so growing close to each other. One of my Novas has only this year put on some trunk hight with a good 2ft of growth this year. My martianus khasia hills and Napal i lost the winter before last, as with the latisectus. So i won't be attempting them again. I do have the fortunii x martianus to try which was planted in 2023 , its still settling in. My Geminisectus i transferred to a pot in the spring as it was looking rather sorry for itself, its much happier now. Its also in my conservatory for the winter too. I have 4 true princeps the largest of which has been planted 5 years and looking similar to the one you featured. I have numerous others as you know but just a rough idea of the growth of a few of them.😊
Love the annual tour and seeing how the trachys are getting on and seeing the comparisons. My favourite of yours is the oreophylus, so exotic looking. I'm missing the kamoan and geminisectus to complete my collection. I've managed to acquire the misan miniature variety which is interesting to see. The best looking trachys in my garden are the fortunei x nova, the waggy x Princeps, the princeps and the ukhrulensis which has some fabulous fine leaflets to the fronds with the silver underside and the characteristic trunk creep. I'm interested to see what the kinla hill, latisectus, fortunei x Martianus plants do over the next few years. They're an unknown quantity to me. Cheers for the tour
@vincenzecalzone8666 thanks VC, it's been a decent year for growth, nothing exceptional but still steady. Geminisectus is a very strange one. So slow growing.
It's almost impossible to grow all "named" trachycarpus: ravenii, nanus, Khinla Hills, Tesan, Winsan, Misan, Martianus 'Nepal', Martianus 'Khasia Hills. Then hybrids come :) By the way, Nainital or Kumaon aren't 'species'/ Trachycarpus sp. Kumaon is a nice trachycarpus, but it looks like fortunei.
Wow, that geminisectus is so slow! Do you think yours is slower than normal? For whatever reason I have a few trachycarpus that just seem super slow. Great update, Kris! Tom
Enjoyed the video. Very much new to all of this.. Apart from Trachycarpus, are there any other palms which you could suggest for a novice grower? Trying to develop a jungle style garden in not so sunny Stoke On Trent.
Probably not. The seeds were collected from the wild so unless it's the same people collecting from the same palms/ place it's hard to know for sure. Best ask the supplier

@tehDYSArts no one knows what the natural cross was with but it's got hybrid vigour and not the same as princeps so a hybrid is assumed.
