I completely agree with getting smaller plants. I mostly look for seedlings & plugs (not only for the cost) but because I like to watch them grow & I love big plants! If I like them when they get big they are allowed to take up the extra room. It looks like I have gotten more plants but the fact is there are less, the plants I like & have kept are just bigger & more beautiful now! Besides - it is easier to deny there is a new plant when my husband asks if a small plant has been blended in with the rest😂 Have a great holiday!
I love your strategy of starting with seedlings and plugs! 🌱 Watching them grow is so satisfying. And blending in tiny plants is a smart move-your secret is safe with me! 🤫😂
Cool video - I like the variety of small plants :-) Alocasias: They are among my favourite genuses (together with maranta, calathea and begonia). I grow all alocasias in Lechuza pon, slow release fertiliser, self-watering pots (from Lechuza or Elho) in 60 - 65 %, 18-25°C, Czech Rep. I bought all of them in 5 cm and smaller pots. I never experieced any dormancy. All jewells bloomed after one year with me. I have been growing mostly jewells (Silver Dragon, Maharani, Ninja, Azlanii, Pink Dragon, Cuprea) due to lack of space and 2 large ones (Regal Shield, Frydek). I find the jewells to enjoy much less water and much less light and they also grow slower. They can be easily over-watered and rotten. Also I find that each jewell wants a little different watering regime - so the self-watering pot solved it :-) The large ones, in my experience: need nearly twice as much water, much more light (or else they get leggy/ugly) and grow no matter what. It´s much harder to overwater them. I prefer the jewells due to their cool looks and easy care. My first jewell - 3 year old Silver Dragon went mad this Christmas and is about to bloom (she usually bloomed from Feb to Nov). I always let all of my alocasias bloom as much as they like - it doesn´t cost them any leaves. Have a nice Christmas holiday, Memo :-)
The star of todays video is definitely your jumper, I love it 😅👍 But I must say I do like the small plants as well. It might look better if you have just a couple of big impressive specimens in your room, but I love genuses like Peperomia, Dischidia or Hoya a lot so I have to buy them 😅
Not small (for the first year or so it is) but it's on the space saving side, but with a twist (pun intended) I really recommend the Cereus peruvianus spiralis, it starts off slow like the Cereus forbesii spiralis, but it grows massively tall within a few years (if it is repotted often or over potted semi regularly). We all seem to have vertical space , it's a great statement plant to fill it.
YES for Peperomia and there are so many different varieties that one needs to see in bloom in order to believe they're related 🙃 My two favourite are hope and columella but for anyone looking for a trailing one with a distinctly different sides of leaves, verticillata's top colour is a veiny dark green and the underside a vivid red. For small spaces I also love small leaved Hoya and even more so some slow growing Dischidia like the dragon jade or tomentella. I regularly restart ALL my Syngonium, as well as some of my Monstera and Rhaphidophora (basically "I like you in this spot, it obviously suits you, but you do need to keep fitting in this pot so...chop chop!"😅). On the Anthurium note. The problem with those is once you start propagating from seed, you start keeping doubles for easier pollination, and then start adding plants to the collection just for the possibility of creating your own hybrids. And then if those mature plants aren't enough, you get too many tiny plants out of a potentially successful pollination than you know where to put. End result is an army of seedlings that end up taking more space and effort than a regular sized plant would, but no matter, we'll get rid of them in spring; happy holidays! 🙈
@@hanstera_deliciosa Which ones? I mean I love my long leaf clemensiorum, obovata and undulata too, but they'll take quite a bit of space once grown 😅 My current favourite small leaved are stenophylla, mirabilis clone b, and dennisii Frida. Oh and I forgot to mention Rhipsalis as a good option for narrow vertical spaces! And strings of tears.
Peperomia in bloom really is a sight to see! 🌿 Your collection sounds amazing, especially with the variety of Hoya and Dischidia. Dragon jade and tomentella are now on my wishlist-thank you! 😍
@@snt9518 I really love my aff. burtoniae! And have some promising cuttings of Khroniana silver that are really dainty and cute! 🤗 I’ve just begun collecting 2 years ago, so barely figuring it out 🤣 but am hooked on Hoyas for so many reasons. One of them being the space they do NOT take up!
Alocasias are my favourite genus. I have 30 different types at the moment, both jewel and large ones. The jewels are definitely more likely to chuck a hissy fit but for me, I believe it's because of watering. I find the watering needs of the smaller varieties much harder to learn because they're all so different.
Oh good. I’m keeping many jewel Alocasia alive on principal. I live in a very arid climate, keep them in my south facing bathtub with fan and humidifier… they hate me 😂😂😂
@@Houseplantygoodness I can't account for everyone's growing conditions but if someone is having difficulties, try watering little but often. Little enough to keep the soil just damp, but not enough to run through the pot. Then every 4-6 weeks, do a full water through. Velvet Alocasia are more thirsty. If you're having issues with root rot and don't want to change watering styles for just 1 or 2 plants, then change the substrate to accommodate. Add more chuncks in the mix, or put holes in the sides of the (plastic) pots for airflow. If all else fails, try semi hydro.
I live in a small studio and also have tiny plants. My favorites are Venus fly trap, butterwart, and sundews. Stay away from picture plants as they will get very large. I also have a few orchids (that are small). I get a lot of enjoyment from them. I also have a whale tail plant. It will get large. But it will take about 5 years for it to get that big.
I recently bought one grocery store orchid. My last orchid experience was when I was very new to plants… I killed them with kindness. Sigh. New orchid is living their best life 😂😂😂
Venus fly traps and orchids sound like a dream combo for a small studio! 🪴 Have you had success with the whale tail plant? I hear they’re super rewarding to grow. 🌿
I have all kinds of plants- big tiny medium. I like them all. You gave us interesting suggestions. I would like to add to you suggestions aerial plants They are very cool cause they need no substrate, they can be placed anywhere as long as they receive a certain amount of light and need watering only once a week (I usually spray them with water over the sink till they are completely wet and put them back). Merry Christmas to you and all your plants!!
Aerial plants are such a smart choice-so easy and versatile! 🌿✨ Spraying them over the sink is genius. Merry Christmas to you and your plant babies! 🎄💚
Alocasia Silver Dragon, Alocasia Ninja, Alocasia Azlanii, Alocasia Nobilis were more forgiving than Alocasia Amazonica (could’ve been pink dragon), Alocasia Watsoniana etc Azlanii is the easiest for me so far… but all got root rot sometimes except when they are in a growtent (and as said before I gave away most of them now) Its different for everyone it seems 😅 What if you grow a small Anthurium into a larger plant and you love it but you cant make space? 😅 Id be so sad! More small staying plants: - small leaf Hoya (can easily be chopped back when they get bigger/longer) - fittonia - Philodendron Grazielae - Oxalis plum crazy - air plants - baby Calathea in 6cm pots (they can live in those tiny pots as long as they get watered in time for years and wont size up their leaves) - Bonsai I also keep restarting Pilea Peperomioides from baby plants, I enjoy the baby plants best (theres a larger plant upstairs just to provide babys for downstairs, but the even larger plant gets replaced by a larger babyplant every now and then) And also Madagascar Jewel… growing babys from seed and then giving them away when they get bigger (the striped baby leaves are so adorable!)
So many great recommendations! 😍 Bonsai, Hoya, and Fittonia are definitely space savers. And yes, restarting plants is so rewarding-it’s like a fresh start every time! ✂️💚
I friend! As a big plant person, i'm slowly working on getting more small plants, to hide ugly plastic pots. I've convinced my wife that this is more cost effective than buying decorative cover pots that they grow out of. I totally agree about small alocasia sometimes being nightmare-ish. I got into alocasia during the dragon scale, dragon breath, and ninja hype, and its totally my fault buying them from big box stores, bugs and all, but it has scared me away from them for a bit. I'm slowly starting to work up the courage to try again though, the melo is too cute...

Ooooh Watermelon Tourmaline I love it! I’ve been wanting that begonia for so long and the Cain one I’ve been wanting that little red dotted beautiful plant. It’s on my list. I’ve got a very long list.😂

I only have 4 Alocasias, Silver Dragon, Dragon Scale, Black Velvet and Tiny Dancers and they have all been easy for me so far. I'm not in 2 leaves brigade, so that says a lot lol. It's almost 🎄 and my Dragon Scale is pushing out another big leaf. I won't be getting any bigger cultivars, as that space is reserved for other plants that I love more. I got my first Episcia (don't know the exact name yet, it's silvery and green with bronze edges), and I'm loving it. Fat leaves with great tactile experience. I would love to add a few more. I'm one of those persons that think nothing of African violets, but recently I've watched some good videos about them and, I'm starting to see the attraction. I didn't know they come in four size categories: Large, Standard, Semi-Miniature, and Miniature! Now I don't like any plants with small leaves, for some reason I find them cluttery, so I'll be on the lookout for a large or standard one to give them a try. There are some beautiful varieties out there.
African violets!!! **swoon** I have zero. My mother had one for like 10 years that I’m pretty sure never was watered but like once in a blue moon and just did its thing in the same pot. No fertilizer.

I tried growing the begonia amphioxus in my apartment without success. It remained small and didn't grow. But... when I put it in a terrarium it shot out and a fast pace. Since then I've cut it and propogated it into more terrariums(coffee jars lol) and it roots and grows without fuss. I've now got 4 of them doing very well. Word of caution, they grow very tall in a terrarium. And my alocasia dragon scale is quite large not in a terrarium. My alocasia silver dragon though, is struggling.
Speaking of glass jar terrariums 😂. I currently have very, very small specimens of a philo pink princess, philo joepi, philo silver sword, peperomia hope, & a 5 leaf Syngonium pink spot in a terrarium I started almost 2 years ago. They were going to die on the outside and for some reason they are holding on in there😂. I do have a few isopods, millipedes, and springtails that occasionally nibble on them so they are still small.
