How I avoided metformin and Ozempic side effects with PCOS & Diabetes (patient's perspective)

  • Metformin's side effects absolutely suck. Metformin is a drug mainly prescribed for diabetes, PCOS and insulin resistance.
While metformin does help improve insulin sensitivity and helps the liver dump less glucose into the bloodstream for more stable levels, the actual side effects that you go through are awful in the first few days.
    Some side effects of Metformin:
    Nausea
    Diarrhea
    Abdominal pain and vomiting
    Fatigue
    Frequent urination
    Loss of appetite
    Dizziness and lightheadedness
    Heartburn
    Bloating
    Gas
    Weight Loss
Here are tips I've learned on how to help ease those side effects from a patient's perspective:
Take it with food. Metformin on an empty stomach can make your symptoms worse.
Ask for the extended-release version. Extended-release releases the medication into your system slowly, so the side effects don’t feel as severe.
Don't skip doses of your medication. It’s almost like re-starting the clock, and you’ll have to get used to taking the medications again. This means your symptoms can come back.
Natural remedies like ginger, peppermint or chamomile may help with nausea.
Your body will eventually get used to metformin and you should start feeling better in about two weeks.
If you still notice nausea, it’s best to talk with your doctor about symptoms, especially if they are debilitating.

I had total success with 500 mg of Metformin ER but I wasn’t happy being a Type 2 Diabetic. I set out exactly one year ago on a healthy journey. I saw my PCP today and was given my blood results. In this past year I’ve achieved a 5.2 A1C, eAG of 87 and 94 pounds lost. My PCP told me I have reversed my diabetics but in my mind I think once a diabetic it’s always lurking close by if I don’t eat clean and healthy.

You’re exactly right. I’m always more comfortable with the term “remission,” knowing that reversal of habits can have an effect of blood sugars rising again.
Congratulations on all of your hard work!

I was on not on extended release metformin for years and the gastric issues were horrible. I wonder if it caused/contributed to what was later dx as a hiatal hernia. Got off of it a few months ago and I’m planning to start ozempic in a few days. Your videos have been incredibly informative - so helpful.

I’m on metformin 1000 milligrams twice a day. I take 2 500 extended release. In am/pm. I’ve been on it for over a year. I still get diarrhea every single day. I will try taking it with good. I usually take it when I get up and before I go to bed.

My suggestion is please don’t stop your medication as weight comes back if you do! Thank you for the videos, I watch them regularly! ❤️

I am on 2000 mg of Metformin ER a day and have found protein bars to be the best food for me to take before each dose. Nothing highly sweet or high carb. Easy to keep by the bedside since my night dose is at bedtime (sleep calms GI).

I've been on it for 2 months now for DM 2. Never had any side effects, lost 35 lbs so far. I guess I'm lucky. It definitely helps lower my appetite. Zero cravings. Allows me to make healthy choices and not over eat. So far this drug has been a God send for me. I do eat low carb and avoid anything with white flour, no potatoes, no bread, no sugar. I walk 10 miles weekly and weight lift a few times weekly...

I have been taking metformin for more than 25 years for type 2 diabetes. I didn't know there were any side effects until I read about them because I never have any. My A1C is maintained in the normal range for a non-diabetic and kidney and liver test show no damage. It woks great, it's cheap and at 78 I'm now hoping it proves to be the longevity drug it is being tested for......I take 2x1000mgs daily of immediate release metformin. I often break the tablets in half and take them 4 times during the day, with or just after a meal and one at bedtime. I also check my blood sugar readings several times dally. After a while it is easy to see when the tablets should be taken............or occasionally that I need to skip taking one.......this routine has worked fine for me for a long time..........

I got diagnosed withType 2 back in May. The metformin is relentless lol. I hate it but I know it’s helping keeping my glucose level. They’ve switched me to extended release etc but I still have to frequent the restroom too often. The worst part about that is I have no warning at all lol. So I can no longer just go anywhere without taking a change of underwear, pants and now adult diapers along with me. I’m 39 and it’s still embarrassing to have to wear or tote around adult diapers but if that’s is how it is the it is what it is lol. I’ve tried it all to not have the diarrhea side effect and nothing stops it not even anti diarrhea medicine. All I can do is acknowledge that this is indeed my new normal and as long as the medication is helping my body that the side effects is something I have to get used to. But it does bite raising a kid and working when you can’t predict or control your bodily functions lol.

So glad I found this video. I haven’t been officially diagnosed with PCOS but all of the signs are there. From missed periods, to acne, stomach pain and all. I do have some issues going on with my uterus. My PCP gave me the meds today because I asked for them. I told him about me working out for almost a year and I’m having a hard time losing weight. I also have HBP. Not sure if I’m considered a diabetic because I don’t have my results yet back for my blood test. But today was my first day taking the pill. So far, I’ve had to go to the bathroom like 4 times. No nausea but I’ve had some stomach cramps which is normal for me at this point. Here in Australia I was offered going down the path of Metformin or Ozempic. I went with Ozempic because the side effects of Metformin sounded crazy (I’m also a T10 paraplegic and have the issues of lack of bowel control). However I have had some issues with Ozempic but figure I just try and ride it out and see how it goes.
Do you feel you your symptoms of n Metformin are the same as Ozempic?! Or is one worse than the other. I know and understand that everyone responds differently but just asking your thoughts. I also know from watching your Ozempic videos that you had the feeling of heart racing etc.

So glad I found your channel, I have pcos been taking metformin for about 4 months only 500mg still no period so I upped it to 1000mg which I’ve been taking for 3 days today, I have had constant vomiting, to the point there is nothing left inside me, also couldn’t get to sleep until 7am this morning didn’t know insomnia was a side effect until I googled it today, just having such a hard time with it and I really don’t want to give up as I have been ttc for 10 and half years with no luck 😭 tried clomid 6 cycles failed 2 failed ivf transfers so giving metformin a try, i take the metformin with meals in the middle of my meal I take it but still have side effects 😭 any advice for me? Thanks x

If it continues to be uncomfortable, I'd talk to your doctor about a stronger nausea remedy. Eventually, you do get used to it, and those side effects can subside, but it can take longer for some to get used to than it does for others.

I am trying so hard to just put up with it in the hopes it gets better, but I mean how are you supposed to take with meal when your appetite is nonexistent n then the vomiting 🤮 just not easy on us girls with pcos! 😭 but I will mention to doctor about giving me something stronger for the sickness x

I would suggest eating potassium rich foods. In the meantime go and purchase some non gmo potassium and organic b12. Cook your own food, workout, try to stick with an organic low carb diet. The metformin will deplete you of potassium which causes an electrolyte imbalance. Research on potassium and b12 deficiencies. Everything I suggested to you is what I do and I have no side effects.

Haha! It's really hard to plan my life around Jardiance and Metformin.
Thank you for reinforcing the fact that consistency is the key to managing the side effects. I can't tell you how many times I've dealt with the "reset" on these meds because I just feel so bad.
    Good luck everyone 💗

I am taking the liquid version. The pills were too big. The side effects were the worse. I am blessed that I have insurance that covers it because the liquid version is expensive. I take 1500 mg of metformin. In the morning when I take 500 mg, I have it with my breakfast. At night with the 1000 mg dose, I found taking it an hour or two after I eat is best for me to avoid some of the side effects. Also learned to not let the pill stay in my mouth too long when taking it as it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I had no issues with the extended release. I was taking a high dose but the insurance doesn't cover it suddenly for me . So I was on it 6 years lol. Well so now they say try the original for 3 months then we'll see. I had bad issues with it before they put me on ER. I was on 850mg x 3 a day and could barely take 1 which made me sick all day. So back on the original version for now and the other morning I tried to take the full daily dose in the morning and felt sick all day . So I'll just take morning and night . I take it for insulin resistance, pcos and they say I pre diabetic for years .

I had to quit metformin at 2000mg/day. The cramps can be quite sudden and severe, can relate to that comment. Big problem when cramps come right after the pilot turns the seatbelt sign back on. 😓I found out from my doctor this severe side effect hits 25% of people who take it. I am doing better with a CGM and religiously watching out what I eat. (zero carbs).

I had a similar experience with metformin, though they did warn me of some stomach upset and I knew it caused diarrhea because my dad is type 2 and went off it because he was so miserable all the time. I don’t know why they wouldn’t automatically prescribe the ER if it’s so well know that it causes GI issues. I took it with dinner my first time and felt totally fine until after lunch the next day and then felt deathly ill for the next 2 days. The nausea was insane. I didn’t feel normal again for about a week, from only 1 pill!! That was over a month ago and I’ve not had the courage to try again until last night but I decided to quarter it and see what happens. So far so good..

I started taking Glucophage last Saturday for insulin resistance and ovarian cysts (not quite PCOS). My period came, so I'm not sure if the mild diarrhea is from that vs the metformin. Waiting to see. My gynaecologist put me on 500mg once a day for one week, followed by 500mg twice a day for a week, and so on, until 2000 mg split over lunch and dinner, if I tolerate it well. I have to do intermittent fasting and eat low glycaemic or ketogenic. He said walk daily and lift weights 3 times per week. Will do the eating after my exams. But, so far, no complaints. Thanks for making this video! You are very easy to enjoy listening to. I've subscribed!

THank you so much for your kind feedback! So many of us struggle with the side effects of these drugs, but they do really work well for insulin resistance and are relatively safe. Once your body gets used to it, the side effects go away completely. I've been on metformin since I was 19, and it really does help some of those insulin resistance troubles.
