Gene Fullmer - Was an American middleweight boxer and world champion. Fullmer won the world middleweight championship on January 2, 1957, when he upset the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson by soundly winning a unanimous 15-round decision. On May 1, 1957 they fought a rematch. The fight began as expected, with Fullmer using his strength and awkwardness to bull into Robinson and really force him onto his heels. In the fifth round Robinson, while backing up, lashed out with what has been called the perfect left hook. It caught Fullmer flush on the chin and knocked him out. In 1959, the National Boxing Association withdrew its recognition of Robinson as middleweight champion. Fullmer and fellow former middleweight champion Carmen Basilio fought for the vacant NBA title on August 28, 1959, and Fullmer won the crown when he TKOed Basilio in the 14th round. Meanwhile, Robinson was to lose his version of the middleweight championship to Paul Pender.

I knew Gene Fullmer. I was in the first grade and he was in the 3rd grade with my sister Lawana. I got out of school an hour earlier than Lawana, so I would waite by the door to her room so I could walk home with her. Gene Fullmer was on the back row and he always smiled at me and winked at me. He was just a gentle person. Once he even played jacks with me. How many people have played "jacks" with a world champion? Margaret Atwood Brough
Gene fullmer is my great grandfather. Thanks for the information 🙌🏼
I always wondered about gene Fullmer because I have practice basketball at gene Fullmer rec center and saw picture of him. Cool stuff.
Got my first boxing match this weekend. Hoping to bring some glory to the Fullmer name!
Update: Got the W!
Done him proud 👏🏻
Dude that is my great grandfather and you have no idea how happy I am to hear you say that because I take so much pride in my last name.
@@kadenfullmer4682 I'm happy to carry the Fullmer name in the ring cousin! If you ever get down to Ogden, go down to Foley's mma. He has tons of Fullmer brothers memorabilia. Foley trained under the Fullmer brothers when he was young.
Gene trained my dad years ago and I remember going into the gym and gene showing me some stuff. He was a great man and it was an honor to have known him.
*Gene Fulmer* is not a boxer the man is a fighter!
Yes sir, you were right on the money.
Calculated brawling like maidana .. better defence .. very confident in his cross guard .
One of the roughest and toughest fighters of all time!
too right he was. he was very effective with his cross arm defence.
haNZAgod He was just a name on Robinson's resume for me. Man that guy was a beast for real. Thanks. Your videos are captivating.
He is probably in the top 5 people Robinson met in the ring but most definitely the top 10.
What a power! great highlight!
You stay making great videos. Well done.
I got the pleasure of meeting one of the men who was one his sparring partners some years back at a coffee shop and the gentleman was a kind, humble guy ….i did some boxing and martial arts myself when i was younger and over a cup of coffee we sat and literally talked for an hour about boxing and its amazing history with with it’s different gladiators, legends, and timeless heroes! He couldn’t tell me enough about the ruggedness and sheer power of Gene! He said that it really didn’t matter what angle or from which hand, that if you got in the ring with “The Cyclone”, you were going to get hurt some way or another! I ended up taking a picture with this fine gentlemen. And i am very thankful that he was willing to tell me about him to the extent that he did! In fact my first fight film i ever saw on tv was when i was in elementary school with my dad and it was the first fight with Gene and the greatest pound for pound fighter ever, the one and only and immortal fighter, Sugar Ray Robinson! Gene was one incredible warrior and is a timeless legend! Great tribute!
Thanks for sharing your story! Gene was one tough fighter and a great champion.
@@hanzagod yes he sure was and you’re welcome! It was a great day when i got to learn and share so much with that guy! It was as close to meeting Gene as i would get, which was really an honor!
Incredible work man!
I've always appreciated Fullmers style. That overhand right KO was vicious.
Gene Fullmer, IMO, was an underrated Middleweight Greats. The man beat Sugar Ray Robinson, Carmen Basilio, Rocky Castellani, Paul Pender, Gil Turner, Del Flanagan, Ralph Tiger Jones, Charles Humez, Wilf Greaves, Chico Vejar, Ellsworth Webb, Florentino Fernandez and Benny Paret. And had draws over Robinson, Joey Giardello and Dick Tiger. He had a superior competition than Marvin Hagler (I know a lot will disagree) and yet he was rarely ranked among the top 10 All Time Middleweight Greats.
IMO it's because he's most remember as the guy who fought an old Robinson. Fighting Robinson hurt his legacy more than enhanced it. And it's sad because first, Sugar Ray was simply that great and it's not Fullmer's fault that Robinson is old. And second, because hid resume tells that he more than his rivalry with Sugar Ray.
Relentless! A juggernaut and one of the greatest maulers of all time.
He was a very powerful, tough fighter and jesus christ at 0:57 that guy got fckn floored.
Fullmer puts everything into each punch.
this guy was a damn tank
The phrase 'crude but effective' could have been invented for Fullmer.
Whereas many fighters used clinches as a chance to take a breather, Fullmer saw it as an opportunity to pound the body.
He put everything into each punch.
Who else besides Fullmer used this reverse cross guard, used it in sparring today and it feels incredibly safe, intuitive and effective...only felt somewhat vulnerable to the left hook otherwise rest of the punches were nullified
Foreman used the exact same guard when he came out of retirement. A great example is the Holyfield fight.
Joe Frazier and foreman used them at times.
But they rather used the better known normal cross guard.
But don’t be mistaken. Both are so good it’s absolute pathetic almost no “pro” boxers use it
@dennit1221 cuz now a days gyms don't teach it cuz its a little more awkward to get used to than a traditional guard or even a Philly shell. Also the Philly shell is better to counter from which is why most people opt for that rather than the cross guard. Still the benefits it has in pressuring mobile jabbing boxers makes it at least worth trying out
That reverse cross guard. So unorthodox. It must have confused his opponents.
0:58 beautiful example of a punch full of elastic recoil , you dont see the human body do that every day , and out of cross guard , striking high on the temple , beautiful punch
The way he throws punch like pitcher to close distance while using his reverse crossguard like a shield to load up is amazing
@@Sam-ht4og well yeah I suppose
Strong boy without immense boxing talent from Utah who through force and will took over the middleweight division that was super-tough at the time. A real champion.
I don't get why people say guys like Marciano and Fullmer didn't have talent but had a lot of power. They obviously had a lot of talent, you don't beat Sugar Ray Robinson twice if all you have is power.
@@peelslowly28He was so talented, he was able to outbox Carmen Basilio off of the back foot and get a stoppage. He was exceptionally talented, what he didn’t have was a flashy style.
@@acetofresh1i love this style
Gotta love a fighter like Gene Fullmer. No fancy boxing, no dancing around like a girl, straight into it.
He was also a dirty fighter who threw lots of illegal blows and pull lots of illegal moves.
Definitely a "Will over skill" type fighter.
I hope to see another like him again in my lifetime despite it being far too late to meet the man himself.
His killer instinct is stunning. I need to go back and learn more about the guy. Great video Haz.
such an interesting style of defence, the arm covering the nose and chin with the elbow out. can't say I've seen that used. What a fighter.
Archie Moore and Ken Norton also used that cross arm defense.
Chris Reidy Foreman used it too, but Fullmer does it differently than all of them.Just like you can see in the brutal overhand KO early in the video, he used ONLY ONE arm and kept his other free for punching. The rest used both and couldn't attack without first getting out of their shell
@@sskspartan and fullmer was using reverse crossguard which I haven't seen from anybody else. This makes throwing jab very difficult since his using the lead hand for crossguard but Fullmer had that wierd pound like jab to set his right and great counter.
Even if he missed, it will close the distance so he can dismantle the opponent at infighting.
He was unique and crafty with the style like no other
Crude yet highly effective style, one tough fighter like a bull with boxing gloves!
TRUE FIGHTER! HAND FULL FOR ANY MIDDLEWEIGHT!
Thanks for the video
A reversed cross arm block? that's interesting how slight changes affects the style this much
Theres a video on the Modern martial artist UA-cam channel which breaks done his reverse cross armed guard, quite interesting.ua-cam.com/video/uP-epyt8cHA/v-deo.html
Interesting guard kinda like the vampire block.
cross arm defence
@Witchfinder Nielsen Fulmers guar is strage cause it was revesed...traditional crossguard allways has the lead hand under the rear hand..
He was a great great fighter
Wicked good, NZA. Bad intentions on everything he threw. A lot of pain in that man's heart.
A forgotten MW great, tougher than hell and twice as relentless.
Fullmer was a true Great!
A TRUE LEGEND!
Fullmer was a prototype of toughness.
Thank you for posting this! I have a great love and respect for this man and his brothers
Omg. Perfect music for him! Great job!
Fullmer's awkward style gave smooth boxers and punchers a hard time.
Big Respect!! Your boxing mash ups, compilations etc, really help to motivate me to train and exercise. The music seems a good choice too - bang on the money; like I say, great work- thanks!!
Thanks bud glad you like it!
On my other channel “RetroBoxingLive” I have an interview with Gene from 2008 where he told me didn’t know about the nickname “Cyclone” or where it came from. Maybe somebody else gave it to him but he himself was not aware at all
Imagine seeing your opponent throw wild haymakers that will make baseball players jealous while also having a weird unsolvable defense 💀
I like the way that even though he was a BIG PUNCHER, HE DIDN'T LEAVE HIMSELF WIDE OPEN AFTER HE THREW A BIG PUNCH. HE WAS A VERY "CONTROLLED " BIG PUNCHER. WHAT A BEATING HE LAID ON BENNY "KID PARRET". WISH THE REF HAD STOPPED IT SOONER.
Very underrated. Heavy-handed fighter who started his career at 29-0, beat SRR, and knocked out Basilio (which was unheard of). Style very similar to Carlos Monzon

@@raulratonmacias1377 I hear that a lot,it's always an excuse when someone gets old, well the way I look at that is don't fight if u get old, don't make excuses
They were all tough in the 50s. Fullmer, Basilio, Robinson, Demarco and others. There were a lot more boxing clubs around the country back then; you got a lot more experience before you turned pro and a lot more fights before a pro got a title shot.

Didn't he beat Sugar Ray Robinson 3 out of 5 fights? But nobody remembers him, just boxing fanatics.
Fullmer beat Robinson in 2 out of their 4 emcounters. He won the 1st by UD, lost the second by knockout, drew in the third and won again by UD in their fourth and final meeting.
Nope got ko’d by a nearly 40 year old Robinson. But still great fighter.
Gene was a literal fighting machine, one of the top 5 middle weights for sure
Great video, nice clear as you can get footage as well condsiderin how long ago it was.
So much commitment to his punches . Something we just don't see anymore these days
Like a bulldozer that just keeps coming. Great footage
Lot of brawling mauling unrecognized science to this guy he's a master of shoving pushing pinning opponents arms much more street fighting with gloves
I'd like to have seen him fight Zalem Lamotta or Graziano
Impressionante Gene !! Una Macchina da Pugni
awesome
That was a great warrior.
Fullmer and Henry Johnson are 2 fighters no boxers should every fight! Impossible defense and non-stop assault.
It would take a lucky Sugar Ray Robinson to stop Fullmer.
Or Dick Tiger or another brawler like Gil Turner.
Imagine this guy with strength training and modern equipment. Fuck me. Don't get me wrong this guy was a beast anyway tho.
im pretty cynical on strength training and modern equipment. the old timers had boxing skills and trained specifically to land and avoid clean effective punches woth great technique, learned the ins and outs of the game and fought sparred constantly
Jeff Boxing true but I don't think modern equipment would be used if it didn't have its advantages
with modern training he'd probably gass like so many of today's world champions do with so called superior modern training ;)
You make a very good point, they used to have 15 rounds as well back then. I remember reading some of the British fighter ted kid lewis having 20 rounders. Imagine the stamina you would need for that. I was just making a point that surely todays modern training must have some benefits.
Guy Fawkes new style training makes fighters more vulnerable to injuries. Old school fighters did the basics and were in top shape and tough as nails.
Cool.
I don't think he threw one single jab in this entire compilation, but he was swarming non-stop. Anybody fighting him had to deal with continuous pressure.
@The One and starts combos
If you watch his fights he would jab, jab, jab and then close the distance and swarm. I've only ever seen him jab to keep distance, allot of them didn't even land, then he goes inside
Unusual guard
Gran boxeador un tanque de guerra pero yo no le apodaria el ciclón más bien el cabezón menudos cabezazos metía también
His cross arm guard was unique
He reminds me of Rocky Marconi.
he has a cool ass fighting style
athanatos y Pressure fighter with cross-armed defense/Dab.
My dad told me that Gene was the toughest fighter of all time,he said he was better than Manny P
Bit of a strange comparison haha Pacquiao ranks higher P4P but Fullmer was a Middleweight, different weight classes so tough to compare.
Body cruncher!
That damned ref that went on front of the camera! Nuuu
Omg the brutality!!!!
He’s got a special cross arm guard that’s not like the others
Its a reverse cross arm.
@@colorado2455 who else has that type?
@@seetsamolapo5600 he is the only one to use the reverse cross arm.
But not the only one to use a cross arm.
@@colorado2455 I was doing it in sparring today. It's IMMENSELY effective. And apparently was more popular in back in the bareknuckle days
He is my great great grandpa am Dru fuller
How would Fullmer fare up against fighter todays?
Quite well I'd say although some of his dirty tactics maybe more frowned upon now.
Yo Hanza can you do Bermane Stiverne
Had one but it got taken down, don't want to risk it again due to copyright issues.
Don King is his daddy.
Highlights of Tito were all short lived years ago as well.
haNZAgod possibly is because the music you used in video. HBO and others sports channels dont use to reclaim videos
Grandfather Von Fullmer's first cousin. strong pioneer stock!!!
He fights like Marciano.
Fullmer "destroyed" Kid Paret before last Paret s fight against Griffith...
Jeez why would you stand and throw with this guy that was right in his wheel house.
Anyone here from modern martial artist?
He was my uncle btw
In your dreams maybe
@hanzagod I'm being dead honest, I literally just found that out today, Idk if he was actually my uncle but he was my grand father's
Really tough. A great fighter who would have done well in any era. Sure we know he didn't have to face Jake LaMotta (What a fight that would have been) or a peak Tony Zale, and in fairness to Sugar Ray, Ray was past his best by the time he faced Gene so I would in that instance have to go for a peak Robinson being too good for Gene. What we can be sure of is that there would be no warming up, no taking time and weighing up the opponent. It would be full on from the start and if you were fighting Gene you'd better make sure you were prepared, perhaps have a baseball bat in your trunks?
If the fights you spoke about had have happened (vs LaMotta and vs Zale) they would have been all out wars.
Looks like it was all haymakers from gene
more winging shots than a fighter plane
He is my grandpa
Kadenfortnite player on xbox KadenDavey if it’s true , gene always been one of my all time fav. Manly man !!! So humble but a beast when it was time to scrap. God bless his soul
That is the most unusual looking punching bag that I have ever seen. It looks like they hung a reclining chair upside down.
Similar to LA motta
Very different actually.
Dirty fighter
How was he dirty?
Dick Tiger has wins over both fullmer brothers, he effectively retired Gene Fullmer.
This is true. Fullmer was only 31, but had lost some of his edge and desire. He got out when it was time to get out. He didn’t go on a long losing streak and didn’t chase money. He retired immediately with his health and faculties fully intact. Tremendous career and a fine, honest man.
Kenny Bayless would've single handedly ended this man's career🤣🤣🤣🤣#STOPstopStopSTOPSTOPstopstop
HE BEAT SUGAR RAY clatterd him.. but they don't like to bring that up
No doubt about it but Robinson was also the only man to ever knock Fullmer out. Don't forget he was past his prime too!
