Great video I appreciate the close up shots you can tell you know what you're doing and you've done it several times. will The cutting produce flowers the first year?
Awe that’s so sweet of you to say! Thank you! And yes, the cutting will produce flowers the first season. It will even produce a clump of tubers for you by the end of the season 💛
Great video! I am in the midst of propagating as well. Hoping I can take my first cuttings in another week. Will you use your mother tuber in the ground this year? If not, how many cuttings will you take from it before discarding it?
Thank you! I’m so excited for you as you give dahlia cuttings a try! I generally do plant my mother tuber in the ground. The exception for me is when I start the cutting process early and end up take lots of cuttings from a single tuber. If I take 10 or more cuttings from a tuber, that’s when I choose to discard the mother tuber rather than plant it in my garden. Best of luck!
@@twosistersflowerfarm Thank you, I'm watching them like a hawk and just waiting for them to grow to 3". I had heard about 10 or so as a stopping point before. Thank you for confirming that!
Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos. You do a great job. I always wondered how to do propagate Dahlia’s!I may have missed it, but what size pot do you pot up to?
I’m not super particular on what size pot I bump the cuttings up to.. usually it’s just whatever I have on hand 😀 I think they’re usually a four inch pot ✨💛
Thank you so much. I am currently trying this. What temperature do you set your heat mat to? How large do the new cuttings get in the 10-12 weeks before planting outside? I’m trying to determine how many I can start with my current grow lights. Thank you!
My heat mat isn't adjustable so I can't give you an exact temperature (I simply plug mine in). My cuttings typically can stay in a 4-5 inch pot until they're ready for transplant out in the garden so you should be able to fit quite a few beneath your grow lights :)
Do you moisten the soil when you place the tubers in the pots to wake up, or you keep the soil dry to prevent rot before the tubers grow roots? Do you place dome over the cutting tray? When I use heat mat, the soil dries up so fast, so I am wondering. Thanks! Just found you on UA-cam, really enjoy your channel!
I do dampen the soil but like you mention, I’m careful not to go overboard so that the tubers don’t rot. And yes I will often use a humidity dome over my cuttings when they’re on a heat mat so they don’t dry out as fast, though it’s not a requirement.. best of luck! 💛
I use the same LED lights on our dahlia cuttings as I do with the rest of the seeds that I start early.... Here's a link to the specific lights I use for my set-up, in case you want to check them out: amzn.to/3Zsvwc3 :)
If i cut all the sprouts from a tuber, what happens to yhe tuber ? Does it die? Send out another sprout? Multiple sprouts in its place like pinching back a bigger plant? My mind is spinning! I just got a few dahlia tubers im really excited about and would love to increase my stock on those this first season!
Good to know we can do that. I am never sure which plants are able to be propagated. I just learned snap dragons can be also!! I have 18 dahlias coming in May. QUESTIONS... Once you cut from the tubers, how long does it take for the tuber to grow to that height again? Also how many inches away from the tuber do you place your lights? Thanks for sharing!
That's so exciting K J! It always takes the longest for that first sprout to form. I find that after I take my first cutting, the sprouts grow back rather quickly. While I've never clocked it, I'd guess that I'm cutting from each tuber every 7-14 days. As for the lights, I hang them so that they're an inch or two above my dahlias. I want the lights to be close but not touching. Hope this helps, best of luck to you!
I've been told you need to cut into the tuber, and take a bit of the tuber itself with the sprout. If you don't the new plant you made will not make flowers in the second year. What's your thought? Have you experienced something like that?
Hmm.. interesting. To be honest, I've never heard of doing that. I've been taking cuttings from my dahlias for the past several seasons- using the same method that I shared in this video- and I've never had issues with dahlias not flowering in later years.
It depends on how early you start the process. Also it depends a little bit on the variety. Some of the later season tubers take longer to ‘wake up’ so I get fewer cuttings from them. I usually get 4 or 5 per tuber when I start in January. Some seasons if I really push it I can get more like 7 or 8 💛
Speaking from experience as a retired nursery man and propagation major, I wholeheartedly agree with what you’re doing.😊😊
Well this just makes me so happy to hear! 💛💛
Great video!
Thank you so much! 💛
Very helpful! Thank you!

Can you take a cutting from the dahlia plant while it’s still flowering in the Autumn garden? Thank you for this interesting video
Yes you can
Thank You!! Very interesting & informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your informative video. During winter months, can I continue to grow dahlias indoors until spring?
Do these cuttings produce tubers. Thank you great video.
Yes they do! They’ll produce a small clump of tubers at the end of their first season.

Cutting and propagating later in the summer; how long to do I have to grow for healthy new tuber development? Zone 8b
Fantastic!! Do the cuttings develop their own tubers? ...Thanks for sharing ;)
Yes they do!
Can you take cuttings from an existing dahlia plant that i have in the garden ?
Thank you for showing us how to maximize our investment! Just think, all of those cuttings will produce multiple tubers and cuttings 👨🌾
Awe I’m so glad you found this helpful! Yes, save money where you can! 💛💛
The Scalpel link has the same url as the hormone.
how long does it take for a tuber to form from the cutting?
What type potting mix is good to use for the cuttings?
I tend not to stress too much over the type of potting mix- I use whatever I have on hand!
Thank you so much for all your wonderful videos. You do a great job. I always wondered how to do propagate Dahlia’s!I may have missed it, but what size pot do you pot up to?

Do the tubers develop another sprout or do the new shoots grow from where you took the cutting???
Yep.. after the initial cutting you’ll start to notice new sprouts forming near where the first one formed.
When do you start taking cuttings to multiply stock ? I am in zone 5b

How many week before your last frost date do you start doing this?
I usually start 10-12 weeks before ✨
What light conditions do you put your cuttings in?
I use the same LED lights on our dahlia cuttings as I do with the rest of the seeds that I start early.... Here's a link to the specific lights I use for my set-up, in case you want to check them out: amzn.to/3Zsvwc3 :)
Once the cuttings have a good root system, is it possible to plant them directly outside instead of into a bigger pot? Thanks!!
You certainly can... just make sure to harden them off first :)

You'll start to see new growth from where you took your cuttings.. best of luck!
My sprouted dahlias for cutting are covered in aphids😢 any suggestions
Is the tuber still productive after taking cuttings? Can you still plant it?
Yes you can!
If you take 10 cuttings youll need to toss the tired tuber
Did I see right that you cut all the shoots from the river not leaving any growth from the tuber? Is this because it will regrow?
Exactly! More growth will appear in its place :)

In United Kingdom we get two tumblers for £2 a pack
Nice! 👍
