    The point about standing in your own way really got me, specifically the part about sharing it with just friends. I’ve always had this big comic idea I want to do, but didn’t cause it did not feel Ready. But I could do it, show it to friends, then remake it with new knowledge, then post it! Which I’m gonna do, thank you for this!

    I can really relate to the not starting your comic thing. The comics I make always look crappy but I decided to bite the bullet and make it anyway cuz if I didn’t start it I’d never get it done and I knew I’d want to redraw all the pages once I got better anyway. I think the best thing to do is just start it and get it done no matter how crappy it is cuz you need to produce bad art before you can produce good art.

    I’m a 33 year old stay at home mom/ university adjunct working on a comic for the first time. DAMN the mistakes I would have made if it wasn’t for this amazing channel 😅👍 thank you for all your great resources and videos. I feel like I’ve done so much right for my first time, and I’ve learned so much. My first comic is not even hot garbage! It’s like, “should have been taken out yesterday” garbage! Huzzah!

    That last point you said was legit an eye-opener to me. I didn't even think that our first comics will start out rough no matter how much we try to prepare and improvise before we put them out there. I planned and worked on my stories for years, whether it'd be scenes, characters, character designs, world-building, etc. and yet the overall story never ended up going anywhere because I was constantly super harsh on myself of how my work should be and how they could have been better so I constantly scrapped them off and edited them all the time. Honestly, thank you so much for the videos you put out there, they're super helpful and insightful!

    Thank you for that therapy session I've never had. I'm 41- no 2. See- you do get slower but that means you sit down and listen to things like this- things that make you figure out what's going wrong on the page and you fix it and you stop worrying about who's going to see it.

    Will Bones do a "writing mistakes" one?

  • @deebo5284
    @deebo5284 2 роки тому

    Getting started was the hardest part and the MOST REWARDING. I had been basically sitting on my OCs, world, and story (doing character designs and drawings, world building, and playing around with plot stuff and interactions) but I had not finished/shared comics due to the fact that since I was still working on things, they would still be subject to change...
    I decided that I needed to start finishing comics, because it was starting to seem like I would never actually MAKE anything. To keep things realistic, i gave myself some rules: 1. Each comic would be show some plot thing that had been in my head for a while and was relatively solid; 2. Each comic would fit in my very simple grid (4 panels)--I let myself divide panels if absolutely needed for clarity/story-telling (so each was usually between 5-7 panels); 3. I would not be a perfectionist (the specific criteria of this rule are subjective to me and my particular state of mind/schedule--it could be based on how tired/nit-picky I started to feel or an actual timeframe); and 4. I did not have to share/make the comics in chronological order--since things were likely to change anyway, drawing/writing the parts based on how much I felt like doing them at the time helped me keep my passion alive. : )
    I've started posting these comics--and although I did end up wanting to change some stuff after the several comics that I made, I am so glad I actually did make some pages. It has done more to help me realize my story and show any interested person snippets of it than any collection of sketches/snippets of prose that I had made in the past.

    Any videos or books you have to recommend to writers getting into comics? How do you write for an artist? Focusing not just on the narrative of your story, but also on the visuals your story can show?

    • @inkypunk
      @inkypunk 5 років тому +7

      It can really depend on the artist you work with, but the main rule is don't make them guess. Be descriptive about the scene, for example, don't just say they're "in the street". What kind of street? A city with big modern skyscrapers? A market town with crooked historical buildings? Is it a real place or fictional? Do your research before you send them on a wild goose chase for information. Find reference photos that resemble what you're picturing. In the other extreme, Alan Moore writes ridiculously detailed descriptions for each panel, and some veteran artists that work with him have learned to just cross out anything they don't find useful. Lots of communication and trying to explain your vision clearly is really helpful before you start, a lot of writers can be a bit "do what you want" in the beginning and then act surprised when the artist does something completely different to what they expected.

      @jess01510 5 років тому +6

      I'm a begginner too but if I ever work with a writter I would ask them details about ... What's going on ? How do the characters feel ? What's the main point of view ? General or centered on a specific character? What is the general mood of the scene (is it tense or chill?), ...
      Also, in the prep work, if yo ever have a precise idea on how a room in displayed or how a character look, a small skecth, even not the best, could help tremendously your artist figure out in witch direction you'd like to go.

    When I first had my work published, I had literally no Idea what I was doing XD Pacing, Page Layout, what´s that? I made the typical beginners mistake: too many panels on a page, too much setup and too much "tell, not showing". But I learned a very important thing: You will get better with time and practice, so no matter how hard it might be to start your story and how terrible your first comics look, it will be worth it, because only through the experience you will learn :D

    Oof! I'm super guilty of the last mistake you mentioned, but I will sure take your advice to heart! Maybe it really is good to start by just showing my work to my friends, if I still don't feel to confident to put it online, as long as I'm producing something. Thank you so much! You guys are my first place to look at comic writing advice!! Keep up the good work!!

    For me, the most bothering thing is how do you know you are not over rushing a scene or you over stretch it? whenever I write something then I make it into a page I feel like everything is happening so fast but when I calm myself and read it and watch how the things play out like I would read someone else's work it is acceptable and sometimes really good but coming back again to it after an hour or a day I feel the same way again and no matter how many times I rewrite it, it still comes off like that or its even worst and I end up rewriting a simple thing over 13-14 times not finishing anything and starting to doubt that its even good and ending up baing depressive over and over again.

    • @anonimouse5533
      @anonimouse5533 5 років тому +1

      IHamfriI Getting someone else to read your work can be super helpful! As humans, we tend to overanalyze and overcriticize our own work. If you can get other people's honest opinions, it's super helpful. Also, at a certain point you have to know when to step back and say "okay, that's enough deliberatng." Eventually you have to just move on. And that's okay!

    For point 1 sometimes you can fill a page with a load text if it makes sense for that scene, for example 2 or more people having an argument and the MC dialouge gets drowned out by the argument.

    I think your videos would be really helpful if before you started a new topic you put on screen something like “ 1. This thing “ it would make it easier to scroll through the video to refresh the ideas, also just keeping the sections shorter and to the point would help convey what you’re meaning to say a lot clearer because atm it feels a bit muddled. You don’t have to take any of this advice, it’s just what I thought when watching
