The maps are a mess, it shows water as land even before it was dammed of. Today's Belgium was not part of the Dutch Republic, that bottled out of the war and remained under Spanish control and was called the Spanish Netherlands and later the Austrian Netherlands. Also stadtholder Willem III did not really make peace with England but invaded and took the throne.

He was invited by Parliament to take over from his father-in-law as King of England, Scotland and Ireland...but contrary to History Captain's assertion, never King of the Netherlands. His title and position there was and remained stadhouder (a word that translates into English as steward or Lord Lieutenant), the highest official, and military commander. Also, whenever History Captain mentions King William I, a picture of William I (the Silent) is shown...and they were two different people, separated by 230 years of history.

I am from the Mauritius 🇲🇺 island..
A bit of history down below:😊
The presence of the Dutch in Mauritius dates back to the year 1598.
It was by a sheer mishap that they reached here. Mauritius was not on their itinerary while they were sailing to the East Indies. Fate, through the play of a severe tempest, drove them to the shore of the island.
On May 1, 1598 Admiral Cornelius Van Neck and Vice-Admiral Wybrandt van Warwyck commanding eight Dutch ships left Texel in the North Sea for the Indian Ocean. From there they were to sail to Bantam (a major seaport in Indonesia at that time) to load cargoes of precious exotic products for trading in Europe.
Roughly three months after leaving Texel they rounded the Cape of Good Hope and sailed towards Madagascar.
The fleet, while navigating off the eastern coast of Sainte-Marie island, went into the turmoil of a violent storm. It was on August 28, 1598. The group of vessels was disbanded..

Of gods and religion: Here first were the gods of nature etc. Then our country became catholic.
Later came the teachings of Luther and Calvin and had their own doctrine. They were both against the Catholic. To answer your question: The Netherlands now has many more religions.
Belief is free to believe what you want.

A lot of Americans with "German" roots, in modern day would be considered to have Dutch or Belgian roots. the Holy Roman Empire made them "German".

The Benelux treaties are an inspiration/blue print for the European Union. Also keep in mind how the Dutch independence influenced the USA independence. Unions..... United for taking a stand for a greater good: Freedom & Democracy.... We are like Nicola Tesla and US like Thomas Edison.

1:53 Dutchie here: We are a Secularized country with freedom of religion. The numbers fluctuate, but for a while now Atheism & Agnostic are the mayority of people in the Netherlands. This doesn't mean we don't have religion in our country, and it's also not just limited to Christian faiths/denominations. We have all mayor world religions also in the Netherlands and even some "cults". Most of the people do not affiliate with an organized religion. Mostly fell out of faith with the religious abuses that took place in history. And the Enlightenment, not to forget. We do have Christian dominance in our history, but also pagan before that.
The Roman side was Roman Catholic Christian since that was their state religion at some point in time in history.
The rest of Europe got Christened by the Franks, so to speak as said in the video
Protestantism -> and up to post modern age.
I grew up religious, but most of my peers not, they where agnostic or atheisitic; didn't believe in a god or something like that. We also have IETSISME; believing there is something [iets]; call it nature, cosmos, etc. But some bigger force that is outside of human control which does hold influence over us.

William lll became also king of England and from on that England became the super power of later on.
(Experience of the Dutch republic he brought with him was an important factor)

NL the small underdog taking it up with their neighboring Super Powers such as France, Spain, Britain, Germany to rise as a small but strong power house themselves. But often overlooked standing next to these Great, Large, Super Powers. But that goes similar to many countries that are not historically labeled as a Super Power.

2:22 Correct is a stretch (like he noted there was some mistake); it's a representation -> the map is not the territory -> the model of reality represents the reality but is not the reality. Why my previous reaction was about the Netherlands as is vs Netherlands as it was in the time period he was talking about.
And his splitting up the NL in counties and Dutchies they morphed and shifted with their borders, it's not exactly the shattering he presented. Keep in mind the Netherlands had 17 Provinces (Pre 1830, with Belgium and Luxemburg still being part of the union and not independent, yet.)
The Netherlands now has 12 Provinces, 1 being man made Flevoland existing since January 1, 1986; I was 5 going on 6 that year.
Before that my province Limburg was the "newest"/youngest edition to the Netherlands. We used to be part of Belgium. Why there is a larger Limburg province in BE, and a strip of Limburg Province in NL. This was to keep the Maas river in Dutch control, and out of "German" hands. All having to do with trade. And it made the border that Belgium shared with Germany and had to protect smaller. Plenty of river ways run through Belgium still without the Maas, and the Maast still also runs through Belgian lands.

Limited technology? They didn't need our modern day GPS to navigate, they had the stars.... a lot of their common knowledge has been lost to us and lesser common. Our ancestors are not that stupid, going back to the Neaderthalers. Not all your views are that accurate, but they are how many "official" narrations go. Written by the victors.

The Dutch are the original; Water benders.... the Hollanders and Zeelanders where very good at sea and skilled seamen.
Australia was called New Holland. New Zeeland (Zealand) But then the British Empire bumped us to our second fiddle spot. And to be honest, I would not be proud of the history of the British Empire. How they abused and oppressed. Similar to our Dutch counterpart in this. It's not a thing to be too proud about. It shows our darker sides of humanity and how we were good at this.

I do get the reason why this animation is the way it is, but it is not a good realistic representation of the Netherlands back in history. This is the Netherlands as is, with all the land we took from the seas. Amsterdam was just some kind of island, Flevoland did not exist, etc. Borders changed back and forth, etc. Technically "The Netherlands" as is did not exist then. But this is what we are looking at from the beginning.
I was wondering if you are aware about the Doggerland history, pre North Sea. And pre-history and Stone Age Netherlands.

Yes, many things lost, many things remained. Not the whole Netherlands was Calvenistic. The south remained strong with their Catholic roots, and arts, and buildings, etc.
Also Calvenism led to prosperity gospel

7:11 Wealth and power divisions, and religious disputes where also a huge part of why Belgium wanted their own independence.
Antwerpen was Diamond capital, before Amsterdam hooked that industry to them. Religious freedom for Protestants, and others like Jews, but a Catholic was like a spawn of Satan, not condoned.

With little time, but an interest in many things, I now love such short videos for learning on the side.
I realize that they can never cover everything and can therefore quickly become incorrect.
And if you want to know more, you always have to delve deeper into the topic in question.
Do you know if there are any short videos that are better than this one?
