What was the final price on the conversion?
Ayeeeee the video is out 🙌 awesome job! Looks like it worked out really good for you guys! I just picked up most of the needed parts for this conversion from a guy who is doing a manual and solid axel swap on his newest project Tacoma from the same year as mine so he wasn’t needing almost any of the parts I need for a decent price! And it had similar KM’s/mileage. Can’t wait to get it done!!
Also you figure out how to get the speedometer working?
That's great that you found a ton of the parts all in one! That will save you some cash for sure. I did get the speedo working, you have to extend the speedo wires by about 10 inches or so and the speed sensor is different from the 2wd one but I found one on eBay for cheap and put it in. The plugs are the same.
@@CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB Ok sweet, I'll have to find one for it to work, I'm guessing you just spliced it into the old wires
Have you guys ever tried swapping that spindle with a 2nd gen 4wd Tacoma? I wonder if it's the same height and what need to be replaced to make it work?
I bet you get a million views, with this video. You should chock up, those wheel spacers in a lathe, and make 'em fit. What's next, Ls swap? 6x6 conversion? Tracks? Taco to 4Runner conversion? How about a 6Runner? Just kidding.
Man that would be awesome! Stop giving us such good ideas haha!! Thanks for watching!!
Definitely looks like a decent amount of work. I have a 13 regular cab 4x4 with the 2.7 4 cylinder and I would really like to put a v6 drivetrain in it. It seems possible what do you think? I’m in ny and we have to pass emissions with no check engine lights.
I would think the best way to do that is to find a wrecked donor truck that way you can get all of the wiring harnesses and the little things that you will need to do the job. That would be my best advice for that
For the transmission you use a auto 4x4 and the transfer case you use a j spec from 4runner or tacoma right alease same gear ratio ? What about the front Def have to be same gear ration? And do you know if I use a manual front Def can I still use the same set up?
Kool man u near Detroit .. so am I sir Warren mi
Ballpark total price?
Can I do this to an 07 Tacoma prerunner sr5?
About to finish up my 4wd conversion thanks to you guys!!! Already have everything installed, just waiting for the snap ring for the cv axle :/. I've spent roughly 3k and about 24+ hours working on it. Struggled really hard with the bearings so i ended up paying a shop $100 to do them for me. I would say the transmission swap and front differential install are incredibly easy, its the wheel hubs that are a night mare lolol. Thanks again for putting this out here!
What truck model do you have and did you have to replace your rear driveshaft?
Couldn’t you just buy 4wd ones?
It's good to know what you spent on the project. I figured hunting down and getting the correct parts was hard, but when I saw the hubs, I realized that it is a huge pain lol. I'll probably do what you did and spend a little money to avoid the headache.
I have a 99 pre runner 4 cylinder with 50k miles .I would love to do this but I hate working on cars. What do you think someone would charge?
That is a good question, I would imagine it would be at least 1500. But that is a guess and if the shop gathers the parts it would be alot more, maybe upwords of 4 to 5000.
Great job. your videos have me the confidence to do this conversion on my 98 tacoma. one question, what are the part numbers for the spline washer and the snap ring on the hub end of the CV axle. Thanks in advance.
AWESOME VIDEO GUYS CONGRATS ON THE 4X4 CONVERSION. TRUCK LOOKS GREAT!
Thank you!! Now there will be more fun to be had!
Quick tip from AvE, I know it won't help ya now, but if you put the larger part of the swivel joint that holds the bearings in the oven for 20 mins at 350, wait until it cools a little, the bearing will slide right in no problem without even a bearing press. Ive seen him do it, it's pretty cool, misses might not like her pies smelling like crude oil though.
I just recently did this conversion on my truck a few weeks ago, everything went pretty good and everything works great. Still sorting out a few issues, for some reason driver cv popped out of diff a little causing a leak from the seal and I can’t get the cv to pop in any farther. and had an issue where the hub lock nuts weren’t tight enough and probably decreased the life of my new oem bearings but luckily I caught it after 5 days and replaced the nuts and tightened good. great video! I watched the first one before I did the swap but ended up doing it before this video came out.
Man we were just a few days late haha that's great to get the swap done! It's so worth it!
Just subscribed. Im in the process of doing exact same thing except for the manual locking hub, my question is did you have to change the dash wiring harness and the ecu?
No, it's not nessesary to change either.
Did you have to get a new center support for the rear driveshaft or did the old center support work for the new 4wd rear driveshaft
The old one worked just fine, no need for a different one
@@CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB Thank you for responding did you have to move the cross-member that holds the center support or did you not mess with any of that
I didn't have to mess with any of that
If you would have put that bearing in the freezer a couple of hours would have went right in
Is it possible to do this with the factory option of auto-locking hubs instead of the manual? I really love auto-locking hubs. Would the dash indicator for 4x4 light up?
I had no idea this swap was possible. I love my 1st Gen Tacoma 4x4 and my daughter wants one. PreRunners are readily available at pretty good prices. Totaled tacomas are also available at copart. Seems like a great reason to by a totaled Tacoma.
The only problem with me and my 2003 Tacoma is I can't find anyone whos willing to do this job!
I’m not switch to 4wd I’m taking the 6inch fabtech lift off my truck. I was wondering about the spindles because my truck has the big 6inch spindles. Can you use pre runner steering knuckles and convert them to 4x4 steering knuckles.. if any one has advice on this project I would love to hear them
My truck does not have Abs, what parts would be different? For converting to 4wd. Mine truck js a 2001 Tacoma pre runner
Hello! Do you have a list of the components necessary to make the conversion, for Tacoma 2004 4x2 to 4x4?
A mechanically inclined as well my father's a mechanic so I like I have been doing it since I've been you guys are I have any questions you guys are good mechanics
So you can use pre runner knuckles and press in a 4x4 lock in hub? Going from a fabtech 6 inch lift kit to stock
Interested - when you lock the front differential into 4wd does that mean you’re always in 4wd? Or the differential is always ready for 4wd when you shift the transfer case? I’m seriously considering this on my prerunner! Thanks for some great videos!
Thank you and thanks for watching! The front diff will be "locked in" all the time but when the transfer case is in 2wd and the hubs are unlocked nothing will be turning in the front. Then when I want 4wd I just lock the front hubs in and pull the transfer case into 4wd and it's good to go! You should definitely go for it, it's totally worth it!!
Is this because the front diff came off of a 4runner with the 4wd button?
@@CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB whats the point of switching to manual hubs when you can just engage 4wd inside the truck now you have to get out
I know its been 2 years now but I am curious why you didn't get your free new chassis from Toyota or did you end up doing it?
Awesome video!! I just picket up a 1995 Tacoma with manual front lockers, Do you know if I could install a rear locker like your ?
Have some fun!:)
That's awesome, Tacoma's are great! I'm not 100% sure but I believe you can swap out the center section of the rear axle to the e locker. The only thing I'm don't know is how to sort out the electronics.
Wonder what the complete conversion actually cost you? I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma Pre Runner with a 2.7L two wheel drive auto Trans.
It's was right around 2500 but I could have done it a little cheaper if I used more good used parts but I wanted to put new stuff in certain places. Overall totally worth it, it's been so much fun offroading with it this summer
Thanks if you hear someone looking for a good truck to do the same I wanted to but unable to get a loan!
What u guys did is amazing 👏 I wanted to ask is there a way to do something like this to a 21 colorado lt rwd?
I watched both part 1 and 2 and I’m excited something to do to my truck thank you!
You're welcome!! It's a fun project and it's a blast when it's done!
Hard to tell where the interference is with the wheel spacers in the video, but could you take the outer part of the hub off, then fit the spacers? Then reassemble the hub and install the wheel.
Unfortunately the spacer hits on the nuts and studs of the lockout, I might be able to spin it in a lathe and make a little more clearance.
@@CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB Gotcha. Another idea might be to mill essentially half circles, only as deep as necessary to clear the hardware, for each of the 6 studs and nuts with a jig, basically 60 degrees apart. You would still retain the vast majority of the inner circumference for hub centricity of the spacer to hub fitment and for hub centricity for the outer diameter for wheel fitment with virtually no compromise in strength. Just a thought.
I’ve always thought about doing this to my ‘99 4Runner, though i don’t have the space or some of the tools required. Not to mention I would need to figure a way to lock the rear being the last year with e locker was ‘98
Last year with the slicker wasn’t 98
u can find an e locking rear end for less than 500
Great video. About to start gathering all the parts to do my 2nd gen.
Heck yeah!! That's awesome!
Bro, what was your conversion spendings, I have a 2000 Tacoma Prerunner V6 and planing an doing it 4x4
Awesome vid
Around 2k, I could have done it cheaper with finding more used parts but Im keep the truck for a while so I wanted to make sure it's good to go. I also have my trans and driveshaft leftover to sell so that will bring down the cost too! You should definitely do it!!
Holy shit!!!!! I found these vids and watched them twice. Thank you so much for being so detail oriented. It makes it that much more do able
Heck yeah! It was easier than I had anticipated so I say go for it!!! Thanks for watching!
could i do this with minimal mechanical knowledge if i took my time and had the right tools or is it pretty difficult
God I want my 1990 Toyota pickup to be 4x4
Go for it!!
Put those bearings in the freezer for an hour. It will press in a lot easier. You can also heat the hub right before you put the bearing in.
Funny you should say that because it was close to zero outside the day we filmed this and that garage doesn't have heat lol in hindsight we should have just heated up the spindle a little and they would have probably fallen right in.
Or you can fast freeze them by using a can of air duster held upside down.
Did the c clips come with the axles I followed the details to a t and I’m missing the c clips to hold the cv axles
1 can of POR 15 would have gone a long way for you all while you had all those parts off
Hello, I’m doing a conversion, but I’m stuck on something… for the Speedo sensor, do I need to get a anither speedo instead of the original one? If so can you provide the right speedo sensor?
Thank you!
Yes you will need a different speedo sensor. I looked one up on ebay for like a 2000 4runner. The plugs are the same but you will have to extend the wiring approximately 10 inches or so to reach back to the transfer case. Thanks for watching!
AWSOME VID 🤘you'd think someone would have come up with something better already to put down on these roads other than salt. Just destroys vehicles.
Thanks! You're not kidding, salt sucks!!
I need to do it on my Tacoma ..asome jobs guys ... I need a lot of references guys but I will do my best to do it..
Definitely do it!!! Totally worth it, come back and ask questions if you need and we can do our best to answer them!
Thank you man .!
I think it’s really funny you say tacomas are non existent near detroit because I think I have the only first Gen taco I’ve ever seen by me LOL! I’m from the metro too!
Haha so I'm not crazy. I've seen like 1 or 2 other ones around my are but it's like seeing a unicorn when you do lol
This is great. I will def need the info on the manual hub assembly. Much appreciated!
How do you making it where it’s not manual locking hubs? I’d like to be able to engage and disengage 4wd while in my truck
Way too much work boss. You would need to swap the whole wire harness from a 4x4 and do all the electrical plugs for that to work. Way too much work. Not worth it. At that point just sell your 4x2 and buy 4x4. I just recently did the swap. I even had the donor truck and didn’t wanna do all that wiring. Way too much work. Manual is just fine for me
So upper and lower control arms are the same for 4x2 and 4x4?
This is badass! Congratulations man
Thank you!! I'm super pumped to have some more fun with it!!
Need a 4wd ecu
Or can be work whit the 2wd.!!
Nope it works perfectly with the existing ecu, that's the advantage of using the manual transfer case and locking hubs!!
Love it! I have a pre runner with a locker, look forward to doing this swap ✊🏼
It's totally worth it!!👍👍 Makes a great truck even better!
Before you upgrade, remove rust from frame and undercoat it.
I've done that to most of the rest of the frame so far and this front bit will get some treatment soon.
HELP !!!! Can someone point me in the right direction in resolving my 98 4Runner issue? When I engage 4H it goes in silent but when it goes back to 2H (disengage) the is a loud bang (like a sled hammer bang). The is a delay for about 30 second to disengage as I drive down the road. My other 4Runner does a loud click only. I don't know the history on the car but I have changed all the oil already.
Nice job guys.
How many man hours do you estimate that it took you and how much money do you have in it?
I would say about 20 hours or so and about 2k.
That’s awesome! I wish I had the skills and knowledge to do this to my Taco
Also yea super hard to find tacos at a junk yard ☹
You're not kidding, it's like mining for gold!
good. I work friends I want a 4x4 conversion like this on my 2004 tacoma prerunner v6
Its worth it! Go for it!!
Will all of the parts and process work on a 2001?
How much did this all cost?
Can I pay you to help me convert my 2000 Toyota Tacoma?
I have a 2003 tundra V6 4x4 with 5 speed manual that I hit the concrete wall at 35 mph. Insurance totaled it out, bought it back. Now in the the process to get another 2003 tundra not 4x4. Using the wrecked truck as a donor.
I plan on doing this to my 4 runner I didn't know you can reuse the 2wd spindle lol good to know
It's worth it! Yep the spindle is the same
Least I'm not the only one that did that to my my truck. Just remember the transmission originally pulled out of there both transmissions of the same any difference is the rear of the which you probably already know about. When I did mine I found out a great deal of information about the two types of transmissions at Toyota made for the 4Runner , Tacoma , tundra and Sequoia. From 95 all the way up to 2004. There's a few differences between the years and I found out.
Did the splined washer that goes on CV axle come with the axles along with the C-Clip? Also what is Toyota #90560-27005 where did that go i must have missed it in Video. Awesome Build..
I just got my 4x4 trans in! I got 2wd Low currently lol... Gathering parts for the front end
Thanks
I have two questions,
1. Did you have to move the steering rack to get the diff in?
2. I have been told I have to fabricate the tranny mounts, is that true?
I didn't have to touch anything with the rack, the diff fits right in and the factory mounting locations are already there.
I didn't have to change the trans cross member at all but I did have to change the trans mount for a 4x4 one but that's just bolting the correct mount, no fabrication needed.
Alright, thank you! Pretty soon I’ll have a double cab prerunner 4x4
@@darekpeterson4134 how’s your conversion going ?
Hello guys, quick question, I’m in the process of buying all the parts for the conversion to 4WD. Any idea where I could buy the front differential mounting hardware?? Website, dealer?? Do I need to buy the whole rear drive shaft or just the middle part?? Also where did you guys buy the speedometer cable that connects to the transmission?? Thank you
Any reason you couldn’t just use a full knuckle assembly from a 4x4 rather than installing new Hubs?
You guys didn't phenomenal job man
What did you end up doing about the ABS sensor that broke off inside the spindle?
Did you have to get a new speedometer for that 4runners transmission? Just did the same swap with a 99 prerunner no locker. following along your videos and just about got everything figured out ,speedometer is the last bit .
Nice I bought a 08 4runner 2wd strongly thinking on doing the conversation how much money did you guys spend and what is needed for conversation.. thank you
Hi I hope you are doing well I have a question if you can help me I have a 1999 4 cilinder I'm going to turn it to 4x4 is the transfer case the same on a 4 cilinder and 6 cilinder a 6 cilinder transfer automatic trans will fit on a 4 cilinder manual transmission ? Thanks
Hi, how much did it cost overall?
Great video guys! Keep up the good work..........I wonder why its so difficult to find toyotas in the junk yard? 🤔
What locker is on it and how do you figure out the gearing
My truck has the factory toyota e locker and for the gearing I looked up online the chart for the gearing and the codes are in the driver's side door jam. Then just find a matching front diff off of that information
Will it be much more difficult if you convert a non pre runner?? I just have the regular SR5
Where you located. I'll pay you if you convert my 2008 2 wheel 4cylinder Toyota Tacoma
Excellent vid guys...great research and everything! Get dirty!
Heck yeah!! 🤟🤟 Thank you!!
Just Sub'd!
Can't wait to see the finished product guys.
THANK YOU!
Did you ever check to see if this is the original frame or did it ever have the factory replacement?
Its original. It been in the family since day 1. We have repaired the rear section of frame. Thanks for watching
@@CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB Toyota had a recall on the frames because they rushed out did you ever have the whole frame replaced?
I have to do this to my 3rd gen 02 4runner!!!
Do it! You won't regret it!
Great videos. Thanks for the upload
Looking to do this to my wife's 04 prerunner so that she can keep up with my 80 series off road. Great video!
Do you have a part number / manufacturer for the inner manual hubs? I already have the outer hubs and axles.
I never forget the hose clamp trick.
D video is exelente.
Thank you!!
Ayyee good job i enjoy your videos man also first comment 😎
Heck yea!! Thanks!!
does this alteration need changes in title?
I was looking up the hubs and lockers on amazon and they said the 04 taco doesnt match the link. Can you verify the parts? I'm doing the same build and you guys helped me out so much!! I really appreciate all the work you've done. Needless to say I'm following your blueprint.
Awesome!! Yea Amazon won't show it working for an 04 because they didn't make tacoma's with lock outs hubs that year, if you look up like a 97 it will show that they work. Make sure you buy the wheel hubs that are for lock out hubs as well
@@CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB Perfect I'm following your parts list to a t. When I order wheel hubs I'll besure they are lock out. My truck I purchased new, it had 8 miles on it and I wanted it to be 4x4. It was a cloaseout deal, and I got a smoking hot deal on it and will never sell it haha
That's so cool! I'm glad that you are converting it, believe me, it is totally worth the effort and you won't regret it!!
If you guys have a website or email I can send pics. I don’t have social media. I should but don’t haha thanks again for the content
Btw how are those cv axles holding up?
Will this work for 2002 4 runner
Great job guys, great video, now prerunners have an option
Thank you! That's right, it's actually pretty easy to do if you have a helping hand and know how to turn a wrench!
Hey man I love the videos, I just baught a 2001 tacoma v6 pre runner TRD package. Exactly like yours. Love it but yes it’s a 2wd. Im having trouble finding the parts you got. Any links or help you can give me to get these parts. I read your about 2k into it so im trying do the same. But as I look for these things it seems like it’s way more expensive lol. Any help?
If you have an Instagram, dm me on there. I'll see what I can do to help you out
Thank you so much for these videos. I've been wanting to do this for 16 years!!!
Great job guys. Nice work and nice production. Watch out for the slip joint dinosaurs!
Thanks! We appreciate you watching! I'm not sure I'm familiar with the slip joint dinosaurs? Lol
@@CRACKEDHOUSINGFAB 1:56
Hahahahaha!!! Kelly and I just had a good laugh about that!! I thought you meant the driveshaft slip joint😂😂😂
Do you need different parts for the spindles if your not running locking hubs?
Did you ever find the answer to your question? Im wondering the same thing.
Can this how on a hilux n70?
JAJAJAJA te quedó de lujo voy a convertir mi PreRunner tacoma 99 a 4x4 ❤
Don't worry about the backing plates! Throw them out!
Can the factory center caps be used with hole sawing the center out? I am in the middle of this swap my self and I am down to collecting pieces for the front driveline, I really like the looks of factory wheels, but would like manual hubs, obviously it also keeps costs down if you don’t have to buy another set of wheels, but 4Runner and LandCruiser wheels offer a center that uses manual hubs.
I left my center caps off and I kind of like the looks of it but yea you can use a hole saw to cut the center out and still be able to turn the lock out. Believe it or no the locking hub fills in that opening pretty well.
Creo sería un gasto como de 5 k
Motor city don't have Toyota? Hello from Texas🙋♂️
Hey buddy. I just finished my 4wd conversion and have used your video for reference. I locked the front add with the worm clamp. Did you get any vibration from locking the cvs together?
I haven't had any issues with vibration, when you lock the actuator in place with that clamp, that isn't locking the axles together, it's just simply locks the diff into 4x4
