One of my favorite scenes in The Great Beauty.
I decided to upload this scene because I could not find it anywhere on the web with english subtitles and I am using this scene for a school project in the US, which consists in the deconstruction of it: analyzing its structure (transmission paradigm, ritual paradigm?), surface meaning, cultural meaning, basically what's hidden behind the images and sounds. - Фільми й анімація
One of the best verbal smackdown scenes in a movie, ever. She literally asked for it, too -- which made it all the more satisfying.

Every so often, I have to return and watch this remarkable seen.
This is not a movie, this is a piece of art. Not by chance it was awarded with an Oscar.
It absolutely deserved best picture and best original screenplay too other than just best foreign film. The screenplay in this movie is so filled with life and its so humbling.

I feel sorry for the foreigners who can't fully appreciate the quality of this dialogue, not knowing the language.
It is similar for every movie in a language that is foreign from your own. I still love this movie, and the dialogue.

Oh don't worry, I'm quite sure the subtitles do not omit any juicy part and everyone in the world understands the hand gesture "better cut it now" and what it means when people look away or cover they eyes.
Any European gets this part just fine. One of my favorite parts. By dancing with him later in the movie she'd makes peace with him, because she knows he's telling the truth.

In termini militari, "Stefa', l'hai voluto tu" è l'inserimento del nastro di colpi nella mitragliatrice, "Così, in ordine sparso" è l'inserimento del colpo in canna, e poi parte una serie di raffiche brevi e mirate. Devastante. Meraviglioso.

Perhaps I’m being sentimental, but I believe there is something truly beautiful about this scene - beyond the satisfaction of the deserving smackdown Jep delivers upon Stefania - that’s only too relevant today to present day America, where we are constantly at each other’s throats in the name of morality or social justice, at the expense of remembering what wretched, imperfect, and miserable human beings we are. I don’t think of it often, but when I do, it is so astounding to see how fragile we are. We are more than often just a few steps - bankruptcy, romantic rejection, death of family, you name it - away from completely losing all our sense of meaning in life. As Jep says in this scene, we’re all on the brink of despair, and all we can do is look each other in the face, keep company of each other, joke a little. Instead of tearing each other down, the only thing we can do to relieve the misery of our short and fucking maddening and exhausting existence is to commiserate with one another in full knowledge of our own imperfections.
Yes, for me as well, I'm not sure if it's sentimental, but this is my favourite scene in my favourite movie, because this is what it's all about. Not just the movie, but life. Let go of the pretentiousness, the ego, the stories you tell yourself in order to create your own pedestal on which you feel safe, let go of all that others have convinced you to strive for and accept that there is nothing, nothing but our common humanity, our short shared time on this planet, amongst those who are equally miraculously present and differ to such degrees that their lives may create wonder in our mind and our commonality creates a sense of compassion and understanding, for at the end of it there is nothing that will comfort us or rescue us or change the final outcome, but we are left with nothing but for our memories and emotions. So why not make them pleasant and share them with those who are in need of them, who can enrich them, who will color them beyond your imagination, for otherwise they will remain as mere thoughts and dreams without voice.
I don't have the ability to write as you did above but I do agree about the beauty of this scene. Beauty along with melancholy. For me , these two adjectives describes the movie. This movie is the number 5 in my top five along with 1-Casablanca, 2-to be or not to be,3-How Green Was My Valley,4 Only angels have wings,5 Blade runner ( it used to be my fifth )
Questa scena vale tutto il film. Impossibile renderla con i sottotitoli. Un capolavoro.
Gli americani non sono capaci.. non doppiano, sottotitolano tutto.
@@Mikelori_ cazzata colossale. Primo, gli americani (come i francesi) preferiscono i sottotitoli al doppiaggio che potrebbe travisare il senso. Secondo, un produttore americano una volta disse che se in America i film stranieri venissero doppiati, Hollywood crollerebbe.

I love the WAY he does it. It´s a smackdown yes, brutally honest but full of self reflection and empathy as well almost tender in a way. Amazing scene for sure.

Jep to Stephania: "We care about you. We know you... Please, I'm a gentleman. Don't destroy my only certainty... You're 53, with a life in tatters, like the rest of us... you should look at us with affection... We're all on the brink of despair; all we can do is look each other in the face, keep each other company, joke a little..."
The scene serves as an intervention that, ultimately, is his gift of self-awareness to Stephania (reference tender, funny scene later where they dance at a garden wedding reception under a tree and Jep asks her, "Have we ever slept together?"). Once fully provoked, he delivers the truth with compassion and not at all with malice.

Ne ho conosciuti tanti come Stefania, sia a destra che a sinistra, e anche nell' "arte". Figli di politici che diventavano politici e si vantavano dei loro "meriti civili", o amici di cantanti e musicisti noti poi avviati ad una carriera grazie alle loro conoscenze con questi ultimi che gli facevano poi aprire i propri concerti. E tutti a fregiarsi dei "meriti" che avevano.
La verità è che tutti abbiamo bisogno di un'illusione per sopravvivere, e la loro illusione è la negazione della realtà dei fatti, solo attraverso ciò possono continuare a sentirsi superiori e a vivere nel loro mondo dorato.
Una volta una di queste mi disse "mio padre ha davvero passione per la politica, ha lasciato il suo vero lavoro per dedicarsi alla politica", e io risposi "si vede che gli conveniva di più", lei rossa di rabbia e se ne andò via a mo' di Stefania xD
Oggi è assessore al mio comune di residenza, eletta coi voti del padre. Da sottolineare che il nostro nuovo sindaco è indagato per voto di scambio, ci sono tanto di filmati di persone appostate all'ingresso dei seggi elettorali pronte a corrompere i votanti...
E comunque, a differenza dei personaggi del film, dubito che queste persone si rendano conto di cosa siano davvero. Pensano davvero di essere "speciali e senza difetti".

Purtroppo non esiste alcun tipo di merito, si può solo continuare ad andare avanti e fare del proprio meglio, anche nella consapevolezza che "certi livelli" non li si potrà mai raggiungere se si è nati nella veste di "comuni mortali". Tutto ciò che conta, almeno in Italia, è culo e conoscenze giuste. Magari all'estero non è così

I clearly rememeber that the first time I saw this scene, my jaw literally dropped and I could only think that if had been in Stephania's place, the only appropriate reaction would have been to take out samurai sword and disembowel myself.
"these harsh damning judgements of yours hide a certain fragility" I've listen to this dozens of times. Fragility meaning her shortcomings. He rips her a new one.
The most vicious murder ever filmed.
It is one one the best scenes in movie history. It cuts soooo deep through it all, same time embracing it all all. It is showing futility in all the endouvers we take as humans and yet same time sustained hope for faith to keep living in face of our deceptions and lies that we stuff each ownselves everyday trying to forget the broken hearts and betrayal of body. It whispers that the way which grace and hope can enter is only through this very humble honesty. His speach here is as if a core of humanity was speaking through our deformed conditioned societal structured roles and through fear of never being enough just to simply be.
One of my favorite scenes in The Great Beauty. Its always teaching me how be elegant and shocking at the same time. I love Sorrentino.

One of the greatest scenes in italian cinema and beautifully acted.
Questa scena è un capolavoro, ancora oggi la guardo con infinita ammirazione specie per Toni Servillo, che qui ha superato se stesso.
Uno dei dialoghi/monologhi più belli della storia del cinema. Stupendo.

Such a powerful scene from one of the best movies of the last decade. And so relevant with all the events happening in the world today. The characters in this scene are the gate keepers of a fragile status quo. Sorrentino's got skills!
Yeah for real. It's crazy how the director actually not only created a very deep and beautiful movie, but also predicted the future in a very exact way. Probably, Sorrentino is the deepest and the most insightful director in the world right now, in my opinion at least.
For real, that's such a good, both aesthetically and morally rich movie. Probably, the best of all the Oscar-winning movies in a decade or so.

Un grande momento di cinema e di verità. L'Italia è piena di personaggi come Stefaní, la maggior parte dei quali pontifica su tv e giornali su come si vive ma ne trovi anche nella vita reale, tanti, troppi. L'unica soluzione per sopravvivere è essere come Jep, osservarli... E riderne. L'unica cosa che può sconfiggere la depressione della realtà .

I also love how the ensemble support cast acted each with facial eloquence but silently, at first because she was commandeering to silence them but after because they were painfully watching her big balls and angel wings plucked as phony wigs, and would never have dared to expose her so but sparing her patiently
Come si fa a dire che questo film è noioso e superficiale? E? uno dei migliori film della storia del cinema mondiale!! Oscilla fra il bello e il meraviglioso, con alcune scene, più di qualcuna, che lasciano senza fiato. Questa, la scena dei fenicotteri, la scena in cui Jep racconta alla Ferilli il suo primo amore. Il suo tempo è il tempo del respiro di Roma, non è noia, non è lentezza. E' così e basta. La fotografia è straordinaria, le musiche fantastiche i personaggi quasi tutti dotati di grande profondità e unicità. Un film corale dove ogni voce potrebbe cantare da solista. Da Buccirosso a Verdone, da Ferilli (si, persino lei) a Servillo. E allora i film di Bergman cosa sono? una palla spaziale??? La verità è che siamo stati ormai contaminati da un modello di cinema blockbuster, dominato dall'azione, e i film dove dominano la riflessione e la contemplazione non li capiamo più. Molto triste. Poi se vogliamo parlare di cose brutali, ha vinto Oscar, Golden Globe e Bafta come miglior film. Quindi "zitti e buoni".
I would say The Great Beauty has plenty of action, complex narratives and themes, and an abundance of very well-developed side characters with lives of their own, not just plot devices used to make a point. The film has a lot of feeling , it is not made just for entertainment and this offends a large portion of movie goers that view cinema as purely a distraction from day-to-day life. This is why a lot of mind-numbing shows and reality TV are shockingly popular, I believe - they provide a total escape from anything that could threatened the mind into producing too many thoughts, stress, anxiety, dillemas, anger. This is also the reason a lot of soapy dramas are shallow, yet extremely popular, so as not to emotionally affect the viewer. These people could never tolerate a film like The Great Beauty, it is too demanding, and they are cut from the same cloth as the readers of 'easy books' and the mainstream pop music fanatics.

I monologhi di Servillo valgono il biglietto, soprattutto pensando al suo percorso autodidatta. La palestra comunque è il teatro.
Verissimo. Io l'ho visto recitare a Lecco nel lontano 2004, quando ancora non era famoso, "Sabato, domenica e lunedì", di De Filippo. Era straordinario già allora.

sono passati 8 anni e questa scena è invecchiata come il vino...Eppure credo che sia anche una scena pregna di speranza, perchè non si vergogna di apparire in tutto il suo degrado e quindi lascia forse intravedere allo spettatore una fioca speranza , perchè se non siamo soli nella nostra disperazione vuol dire che possiamo tornare a parlarci, ma dovremmo farlo con un linguaggio diverso

Una delle scene più forti e belle di questo capolavoro! È un film particolare, che ho capito la seconda e terza volta che l'ho guardato, dopo averlo odiato e denigrato la prima volta!

@@faustomarchesi4036 Sorrentino è molto famoso all'estero, soprattutto in America. Esistono americani che si dilettano con la lingua italiana e guardano i film non doppiati, o i video su youtube. È difficile capire se non sei madrelingua italiana a maggior ragione se è presente un accento.

I am just sorry for those who don’t understand Italian because, beyond the words, it’s the way how he tells them with a a typical Neapolitan accent calm and tired and cynical at the same time.
Yes, but there is a lot more that inevitably ends up lost in translation, from the very beginning when Stefania says “appena scoprono di avere due neuroni” and the subtitles go “when they realize they’re smart”. The meaning is there but there’s nothing of the contempt shown in her saying “they find out they have a couple of brain cells”.
Ferdinando Trevisan verissimo. E soprattutto i sottotitoli non rendono benissimo per la compresione dei nostri amici di lingua inglese.

congratulazioni a chiunque abbia messo i sottotitoli. finalmente una traduzione degna. un'interpretazione di contesti e senso dei discorsi, come dovrebbe essere, invece della solita scimmiottata letterale che magari è grammaticalmente corretta ma non c'incastra niente. bravi/bravo/brava/brave ;)

it's not about bossing it's about telling the truth, to realize that they are in the same situation,, to admit their situation rather than denying it
@@grossograndissimo Chinese and North Korean communist parties/movements spent a lot of cerebral energies to develop what they called "Session of public auto-consciensce" if this definition can fit the correct English terminology. A process within an individual was placed under severe accusation from his own main familiar/party group fellows. I think it didn't pass so much time before this way for collectivism was corrupted by people who blamed the individual for fake accuses reaching faked reaction by the individual. Anyway... before Chinese and North Korean guys discovered the art of the complicity... evidently... many horrible situations could have spread. The worst of those effects is that during those sessions politics were really marginal, for many obvious reasons that I would not have to explain. What was used against the poor fellow under accusations was his own human nature, his fallibility... correlated to the worst moralist banalities that armed any religious fervour. From A to Z... they were claiming to be commies but used all the bad tricks of millennial religious organizations: I didn't allow you to have sex, I didn't allow you to enjoy an affective life worthy to be lived, I underpay you, I assure myself that you have to pay too much for a drop of satisfaction, I knew you sooner or later would have broken some rules (at least for frustration), and, now, I am here to.... to what? This isn't particularly clear....
Anyway. Talking about a wealthy, arrived, old elite (shown in the movie)... who's not gonna have anything to lose... In this movie is shown what could be defined the haute bourgeois way to self-public-counscensce. The main character can't stand that kind of life no more. The woman equally can't stand it, but she won't admit it. She still have some faith that putting some maquillage and tricks over her scary existential situation she can appear more true, trustworthy, lovable, but this is samsara. Every human sitting there knows very well to be participating to a meeting of doomed undead.
