- A video essay on Paolo Sorrentino, the Italian filmmaker who directs artistic and sentimental films on love, loss, old age and beauty, inspired by the scenic vistas of Rome, Naples, and Italy. Sorrentino's films and screenplays include The Great Beauty (La grande bellezza), The Hand of God (È stata la mano di Dio), Il Divo, Youth (starring Michael Caine), and the TV show The Young Pope.
In this essay I breakdown the world according to Paolo Sorrentino, to show his essential romantic-nostalgic philosophy.

I starte watching his work with the young pope expecting just a satirical and cynical take on the papacy and religion. I ended the show in tears and blown away by the beauty and heart in it
Sorrentino is by far my favorite director today, and has been since I stumbled upon The Great Beauty some years ago. More please. His are the films I would like to be in. Thank you for this lovely summation/examination of his work.
Thanks for sharing, the rooftop dialogue in La Grande Bellezza has stayed with me for a very long time & the character Cardinal Voiello in the Young & New Pope is fascinating. His cinematography is always stunning.
This is a very interesting, astute, and worthwhile critique of one of my favorite directors -- Thank you, BRAVO!
Intelligent and Insightful analysis of Paul Sprrentino’s films. Grazie.
Thanks for this. Some very good & simple observations that I think hit the mark on how to approach and what to expect from Sorrentino.
That was a fantastic analysis!
Excellent! Thank you for your insight -
La influencia de Fellini en las películas de Sorrentino es innegable, por momentos la Dolce Vitta es la gran Belleza , y 8 1/2 es Youth, les recomiendo verlas
Thanks for sharing.
Good analysis. Thanks
Thank you!!
The story and character have striking similarities with “The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone” by Tennessee Williams
